- esodin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Gotta love the power of open source. Could never get a distribution speed and width like that if it was commercial.
- consorzio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Given Jobs goal of IPhone domination, I wouldn't be surprised to eventually hear that someway, somehow, this was the idea all along (ahh... conspiracy theory ;-) What incentive does Apple have in stopping thousands upon thousands of people from unlocking the IPhone and using it where they wish? Unlock = huge profit for Apple.
- atbnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Uh, Verizon is CDMA, the iPhone is GSM. Good luck with that, considering you would have to redesign the hardware of the phone.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Mars?
- Kalan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Article incorrect..In Canada Telus is a CDMA carrier. Only Rogers (And its child company Fido) can do GSM.
No hate however! I would love one..just worried what will happen during the next Apple software update. - Jaitls, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11isn't this hack going to be fixed with every software upgrade. I would hate to look for the latest hack out there for me to upgrade my iphone.
- MEMADDOG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9RE: "What incentive does Apple have in stopping... people from unlocking the iPhone..."
Because Apple gets a portion of the monthly AT&T bill. That's why the other carriers turned Apple down at first - Apple wanted too big of a cut of the monthly cell bill. They just sold their 1 millionth iPhone. Multiply that by $5 - $20/month for Apple's cut every month and you can see why Apple cares so much. (Not to mention that they have an exclusive contract with AT&T and not fighting to uphold that agreement would be pretty lame of them.) - Starks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I bet AT&T is massively pissed at Apple for letting this happen and not taking a hardline stance against it.
- rodrigo74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's not like it can't be done in the Netherlands or anything, just that no one has tried it. The tutorial seems quite straightforward, it's just a question of someone there getting an iPhone and going through it.
- mntbikeracer1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Not gonna happen, sorry.
- anadar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Japan won't get the iPhone because they no longer use the GSM network. The whole country basically has upgraded to a 3g network
- catfud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8verion told apple to take a walk
so i hope it will make you sleep better at night to know that the iphone was originally offered to verizon - DigDugDigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Maybe if AT&T's network wasn't so damn slow there wouldn't be such a large demand for something like this. But, Apple got what they wanted from AT&T, something tells me when the contract expires, a lot of carriers will want to be 'iPhone-friendly'.
- TheIguana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That picture isn't a compilation by Engadget. It is straight from an early version of the dev wiki outlining what people have tested. Telus as of now has been removed, but when Engadget took their screen cap the listed testing was for a Telus Mike SIM. Naturally it did not work, thus why Telus has been removed from the list.
- fowleryo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4slim chance since that's a hardware issue..
- hongkongfive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Just unlocked my iPhone in Hong Kong. Can confirm it is working on Smartone Vodafone, PCCW, Sunday and CSL. Free at last!
- sleastack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3AT&T can suck it.. with everything they have done to the country and its customers this is just a tickle
- psilanthropist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3all of them ? what about BSNL ? its the country's largest GSM carrier.
- svenjick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The European roll-out is not months away, it is set for October according to multiple rumors (Apple Expo will be held in Paris late September, and there journalists have been invited to an event, most certainly about the European realease of the iPhone).
- Elektriq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Still nothing for the Netherlands though :(
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a sport to hack everything.
And here's a concept. You buy a ***** phone. You *own* the ***** phone. What gives Apple or AT&T the right to tell me what I can and cannot do with that phone? - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3*sniff* That's just not *snort* true man! Ohhh the colorssssss
- ribbleninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3BOOM!!! lol
- deanypop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Uh, it's more like they've always had their own, non-GSM network... And that, soon, their new 3G-esque network will (kinda) accomodate (some) 3G phones. It IS possible to occasionally find a GSM signal in Tokyo, but it's just easier to rent a phone at the airport for $30/day. Ick.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3True they do but how much do they loose being tied to ATT? I bet they will make more money on the hardware sales to people in other countries where they don't have any contracts with the carriers because otherwise those people wouldn't even buy one in the first place.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4hey if you think it's possible, more power to you. btw, can you help me hack my "inferior" firewire device to work on usb2.0? kthxbai
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3show us the sim in your verizon razr and we'll gladly help you out.
- Prometheus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER
- crazydiode, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3one of the most pathetic carriers.. never works anywhere inside.. i always had to rush into the streets when i get a call... damn BSNL...
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe you missed all the other COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES where there is no ATT and Apple is making all the money on those sales.
- yeahright, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Imagine that. iPhones with PTT running on the Motorola iDEN network
- diggboy101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why would we accept some BS monopoly when we are supposed to, BY LAW, be able to unlock any phone we wish?
- PA42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3They make a tremendous amount of consistent renewable revenue through the contracts associated with the iPhone (i.e. X% of the users contract fee). An open iPhone not only limits their ability to collect on that revenue stream, it makes it less likely for the phone companies to sign that type of deal with Apple. While I'm sure Jobs isn't too upset since the iPhone is selling well, he is none too pleased
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Of course its INDIA. It needs to be mentioned twice.
- crazydiode, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Airtel, Hutch and Idea...that covers all the GSM carriers. All that needs to be done is to workaround the customs...
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Buried for "BOOM!"
- ABombbmoBA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2In Japan' the TX/RX frequencies are reversed from the rest of the world... so it will not work.
- uidzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is nothing wrong with it. At least in the US, it's perfectly legal to unlock your phone for use on any carrier. Just because Apple decided to launch on AT&T doesn't mean AT&T is the best choice for all consumers. The law was amended so a user could have a choice of phones but be allowed to choose the carrier that is the best choice for their needs.
- Swift2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Let's see, $5-$20 per month, vs. $399 for the iPhone that won't see any of that. I don't see them heartbroken.
Plus, now that the hack is available free, and it's free, it's legal. They can make people's lives miserable with updates, but they have a big interest is not doing that, too. - pu-z, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2True. I visited Japan and my Nokia N80 worked just fine. It is 3G and GSM.
- rodo75005, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is it working on Orange FR ?
- barnis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Japan?
- Munceenuts, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3lol@69
- Canuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have to question the accuracy of the list of carriers. They show that Telus in Canada is available, but Telus is on CDMA, not GSM.
- shootsfired, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't mind switching to AT&T but their plans are a rip-off.
- chrisxkelley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you sir, lose.
- the_snitch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1exactly! exorbitant roaming charges to be made
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Curious, can anyone who has unlocked an iPhone and put it on another network tell me:
What features still work?
Maps, mail, stocks, visual voicemail?
I'm sure some of it is tied specifically to AT&T? At least the voice mail? - o2o2o2o2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, but why only sell to ATT customers in the USA when the entire world wants to use your phone. This unlocks it work the entire world, which means huge hardware sales
PS. ATT worldwide roaming? LOL. ATT wants $4.99 a minute in some countries, when you can buy a local sim card for $.03 cents a minute. - preshit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Toblerone ?
