- SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Quad band means it can transmit on 4 different frequencies. All frequencies are still GSM. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA. The phone won't work on their networks.
It may work on T-Mobile though because they are GSM. - nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12it will work on t-mobile, but the only problem is the fact that you can only get this phone by signing a 2 year contract with cingular. Buying an unlocked phone on ebay will cost an outrageous amount, probably a thousand dollars or more.
- austindkelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Honestly this has got to be the dumbest article ever written.
Summary:
If you are in a contract wait till it is up and get buy an iPhone with Cingular.
They recomend buying the iPhone outright on a month-to-month basis so you do not have to sign a 2 year contract, however im sure the phone will cost twice as much with out a contract so you might as well sign.
This is common sence, and applies to any phone and any carrier, i do not see how this is digg front page worthy, other than of course the fact that it has the word iPhone in the title. - mtwoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Indeed such profound statements in that article.
"To sum up: Your number #1 priority if you want to switch to Cingular in June is to avoid signing a contract between now and then."
I'm glad I know that now, and knowing is half the battle!
/sarcasm/ - kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm sorry it has a smaller screen, no wifi, and uses USB 1.1
Is that a joke? - UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7WTF , is this point out the obvious on digg day?
Lame. - Superflks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6-The advice is not to sign a contract in the first place
-If it is within the first 30 days (grace period), try to get out.
-If you are in a contract, wait it out.
...What the ***** kind of advice is that?
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this kind of ***** inane. If you have more than one brain cell, bury this. - Geener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This article is worthless. Save your time, all it basically says is:
Don't sign a contract between now and the iphone release date.
Wow, sage advice there! - zevgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Even if you were to unlock the phone, the cool voice mail feature is, I believe, a Cingular-Apple exclusive.
- austindkelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5can you please provide evidence of this?
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the picture name of the iphone in the article is jesusphone.jpg. nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sorry to abuse reply, but for current Cingular customers that are stuck in a contract and want a way to be out of it by the time the iPhone is released, there was a story on digg a few weeks back that tells how you can break your contract due to an imminent change in text messaging rates. This is what I plan to do, considering I just signed up for a 2 yr. contract when I bought my Blackjack. Basically, b/c of the text messaging rate change (from 10 to 15 cents) it voids your contract, and therefore, you can go month to month till June.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Break_Your_Cingular_Contract_Without_a_Fee - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4buy it unlocked for $200-$300 more. Sure it will just be a $900 mp3 player..but it will have touch screen and be from apple so that's enough to justify it.
/sarcasm - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No, that's the problem with CDMA. You don't get a SIM card. You don't even get the opportunity to unlock your phone. If you're with Sprint or Verizon, you get what they want you to get, and there is no choice, no workaround you can do.
I wonder, though, if there will be a way to buy this phone unlocked, at any price? If it were from any other company I'd take it for granted, but this is Apple we're talking about. They're very good at controlling who gets to sell their products, and how.
I desperately want to buy this unlocked, I really don't care if it's $900 - I just prefer freedom of choice. - mysticmcj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Incorrect - The price given was "with two year contract."
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, this is a pretty bad article, all it says is don't get a contract, not how to get around one, buried.
- Ryan001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4GSM or CDMA, two very different systems.
Also Apple worked out a deal with Cingular to rework the infrastructure to allow new features such as "Visual Voicemail." I have a feeling that this will give Cingular time to also improve their service and EDGE network speeds.
This, besides the fact that the iPhone software is not finished, it is running Leopard, is why we will not see them until June. - warfang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This guide is retarded (buried). Just don't sign a contract? What about all the people who are on a contract? I'll tell you how. Every major wireless provider will let you get out of your contract without a termination fee if you they can't provide you service. I cancelled my Cingular contract this way to switch to Verizon because I like their unlimited IN texting plan. So how did I do it?
I found a guide on the internet (search for it yourself) that said study their coverage area and look for a big spot where they don't provide service. Zoom in on their map and find a city. Search for the zipcode and call up your provider. Say you're moving in a week or so to _______ and you were wondering if they had service there. I chose Tempuite/Alamo Nevada. Cingular didn't have service for 300 miles in each direction but they said roaming may be available but they had no way of checking (the Cingualr rep checked every possible means of finding out but failed). The rep said to call back after I went there to see if I could get service and if I didn't they would allow me to cancel my contract without an early termination fee. I called back and cancelled.
w00t - listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Cell phone providers are like booze. Plenty of brands out there, and everyone's guaranteed to have one they can't stomach returning to.
- mweels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
No matter how cool the phone is the service has to be good first, and the service for Verizon is much better than Cingular in my neck of the woods. - bradproctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No Verizon doesn't use sim cards, they manage their devices by what is called the esn number. The iPhone will only work on GSM networks....period.....or until there is a VOIP client that will allow calls over wifi, ie. skype.
- doctordrew89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought his earlier article on how to order a steak was also informative...
1. Don't order the chicken...this is not a steak.
2. Sometimes waiters will try to trick you by telling you the specials. Be careful not to be deceived.
3. When asked what you would like, say steak..... - Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally someone gets it.
First it won't work with Sprint/Verizon because they are CDMA, but second and almost as important Cingular has made changes to the software in their network to make all the special features of iPhone work.
Even if you had an unlocked version and you had another GSM carrier many of the features just wouldn't work because you need backend network support.
No doubt the future will bring more iPhones with more options and lower prices, but if you want to be an early adopter, you will have to be on Cingular and you will have to pay. - mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some of the features of the phone (such as the visual voice mail) are dependent on Cingular. If there was/is/will be a way to go to another carrier, the other carriers will need to do similar things or you lose functionality in the phone.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing would entice me to switch back to Cingular. I had them for years, the service was great, the _customer_ service was pretty bad. Not to mention it was more expensive. T-Mobile has great customer service, they even win awards for customer service, plus they're cheaper and service is fine. I choose to spend my money with companies that provide good customer service, hoping others like Cingular will one day get it.

Coverage from Lifehacker: http://www.lifehacker.com/software/cell-phone/ditch-your-phone-contract-with-celltrade-227611.php - contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SIM or not, I just can't wait for this thing to come to CANADA...
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amen. I don't care what phone cingular has, their reception sucks around here there is no way I would switch
- Bortoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Phones that use sim cards and require a contract are subsidy locked. This is usually because the carrier has payed more than what you are being charged for the phone. It can be unlocked with the right code from your provider. This code is different for each phone though.
After your contract is over you can usually get your phone unlocked. The code is usually encrypted within the phone so cracking it might not be trivial. - brianjlowry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A better question to ask is, "why would you EVER want to switch to Cingular?"
I want the iPhone just as much as the next guy, but I am on my way out of Cingular and in to Verizon. Cingular is a truly awful phone company and they ruined my exceptional Suncom service and unlimited minutes plan. - austindkelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you are making assumptions at this point, based on your own personal experience with a totally different product.
- itsbetteronamac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I doubt Apple will let Cingular cripple the iPhone to the extent they do their other smart phones. Cingular is notorious for branding the crap out of their phones. But, let's all remember that by the time the iPhone is released Cingular will have already started the rebranding process and the move to the "New AT&T." And, if anybody remebers the old ATTWS, they were the most open company ever. If they do decide to "ruin" the iphone, I will most definatley be buying the phone outright from Apple.
- sven007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What if i just want an iphone for it's ipod and internet usability? They're probably still gonna force me to have a contract, right? they could make a ***** of money on iphones that have no phone capability.
- Brandondork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why anyone would ever want to go to Cinglebar is beyond me. Have fun getting a screwed bill, dropped calls and ***** customer service. And ohh when your iphone gets stolen and you find your little sim card on the ground, you do realize GSM phones can't be tracked, so now someone has all your passwords and information, and you can neven find them.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno where you're getting your info from, but I have a Cingular-branded RAZR, bought from a Cingular kiosk. Nothing is locked. Hell, if I transfer an MP3 to it via bluetooth, one of the options (other than to just store it) is "Set as ringtone."
In fact, my current ringtone is a full-length MP3 that I cropped in GarageBand and sent via bluetooth. - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can we just make a separate "iphone" section for digg so I can pref it out? Seriously, there seems to be an iphone story every 20 seconds.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Welcome to Ma-Bell Apple boys
- uselessexpert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Toecutter....I couldn't agree with you more.
I admit the phone is beautifully designed...but *****!!!! It's a ***** phone!!!
Big deal...
It's like everything else. You buy a new phone. You use and abuse just about every damn feature the phone has for the first 2-3 weeks, one month tops.
Then, you end up using as a phone 80% of the time. All that cash down the toilet for a phone, which you'll hardly, never use the other features it offers. - jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok...
Did you look at any of the other aspects of this phone? Apple's touting it as the next ipod, not just another phone... - happygiraffe88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quad-band just means that it works on the four main GSM frequencies.
Normally that implies you can use it with Cingular OR T-Mobile, but you'd lose out with the whole "Visual Voicemail" deal. - DjinnX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man you all need to get off Apple's Dick.
- ijerry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4To OMGWTFROFLMAO:
It will not be available in 3-6 months on another network because Apple signed a multi-year exclusive deal with Cingular. - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah just saw that after I posted on digg. No surprise.
- Kickersny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brandondork, you seem to be missing the concept of "visual voicemail" -- visual voicemail is not the same as video messaging. Visual voicemail provides you with an intuitive interface to your voicemail, rather than navigating using the slow, awkward, and just horrible voice/touch-tone menu that is in use currently. Think of it as having the same interface as your email client does with your email messages.
- jkoski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't decide who I'm more tired of hearing from on Digg.... a) The Sony Bashers b) The Wii Fanboys or c) The Open-Source Fanatics.
The neo1973 CLEARLY does not 'own' the iPhone. - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry forgot to add you also get good discounts with Cingular Premiere - I get 22% of my monthly bill and 50% of devices (excludes PDAs and most likely iPhone but still).
- Brandondork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, but you'll have to fax a valid drivers licence to your old carrier within 3 months of when you "move". Your early termination fee will be in limbo until they receive the fax of your "new" Seattle address. I too am in the cell phone biz, there use to be a way of saying "I'm moving to such and such city in Montana and there's no service there", and they'd be like "ok have fun", but now-a-days they have their tracks covered. My anti-american buddy was one of those "millions" that moved to Canada when Bush was reelected, and Cingular (ironic huh?) said "see ya later". They won't need proof you moved, because, well your now a Canadian.
I love my Verizon, I'm stickin around, talk to your buddy about EVDO revision A, we'll have it way better than Cinglebar by years end. - envy860, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think an important line from the Keynote from the Cingular (AT&T) CEO was that they were going to let Apple be Apple. I think it is reasonable that everyone hates their service provider (they all suck.), but I don't think Cingular is going to be allowed to f this up. For example, Apple had demands for specific things to the music industry. When they wanted more, Apple said NO. Especially if this is sold in Apple stores, I think the only notice of Cingular would be in the interface (showing the provider). Apple would not let them plaster their logo anywhere on it. Also, it seems that at higher price points, more freedom is allowed. I got a Motorola Q when it came out, and it supports OBEX push bluetooth file transfers, something Verizon is famous for not supporting. I think that even though Cingular might like to screw people, that the fact that people will switch just for this phone, and with Apple getting their way, that there is not much they can do to this phone.
It helps Apple for obvious reasons, and helps Cingular because of switchers from other providers. I don't hugely mind that it is not unlocked because Verizon and Cingular are really the only carriers I like. I badly want a GSM SIM phone though. I hate being stuck with the same phone all the time. - Academicballa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1digg me down..made a mistake.
