- usrlocalbin, on 01/21/2008, -3/+34Fully support Exchange....Then we'll talk.
- llsethj, on 01/21/2008, -1/+19Time to go annoy your IT dept about this. Joy
- sorrow, on 01/21/2008, -7/+25I couldn't care less about the fact that you got the first comment, but I'm glad I got to be the first one to digg you down for claiming it and not saying anything useful or interesting about the article.
- m0rn1n6s74r, on 01/21/2008, -0/+17nope still needs exchange active sync!
- datrdigg, on 01/21/2008, -2/+18my belief is blackberry will still dominate this territory... but who knows if theres many people in corporations who will try really hard to get this into their own offices for the "cool" factor
- popothebright, on 01/21/2008, -2/+15No serious corporate user is going to touch the iPhone. I'm not bashing Apple, btw...the iPhone is way cool. But iPhone needs Exchange active sync, it needs cut and paste functionality (come on, please Apple), it needs 3G, it needs an open development platform to keep corporate IT departments happy, it needs bulk filtering/deletion and integration with corporate spam/big brother systems, it needs serious Office applications, it can't have a camera (sorry, but this is *very* standard in corporate-land these days... cameras are a no no), it needs to be able to talk to Blackberry servers and iPhone 2.0 really needs a keyboard to make most corporate users happy.
iPhone 1.0 is totally sweet. But its not designed for the corporate user, the same way that the original Macintosh machines weren't designed for corporate users. Apple will circle back and target them in a later release. - Zippo, on 01/21/2008, -2/+13Perfectly fine for any small business with just a POP or IMAP e-mail service. Not going to work for anyone running BES.
- diieson, on 01/21/2008, -0/+8Yes
- ThatsUnpossible, on 01/21/2008, -1/+8And what's your reality check, that the IT department is sold on the Microsoft propaganda?
- daborg, on 01/21/2008, -2/+9And by reality check we mean screw people who actually want to use good systems because our sucky corporate backbone is all based on POS M$ systems.
- elhaf, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6They need to fix the problem with e-mail bulk deletion to really capture the business market. This should just be a software update.
- virtualball, on 01/21/2008, -1/+7"Apple remains focused on increasing the penetration"
Dugg. - InfamousAtheist, on 01/21/2008, -6/+11The iPhone is one of the very few Apple products I'm interested in (I really can't stand the fanboys) but until it's compatible with Blackberry Enterprise Server, I refuse to buy one. Carrying two devices (one phone, one email) sucks, and I refuse to do it.
- SniperGX1, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Are you sure that many admins won't want it? You know that 72% of all statistics are made up on the spot
- ascheinberg, on 01/21/2008, -3/+7That's the most inane thing I've ever heard. If you're going to deny yourself Apple products solely because you don't like the fans, you're just as dumb as they are. And I don't say that to be mean, I say it because anyone thinking like that ought to stop and think about whether it makes any sense at all. You don't believe you're "teaching them a lesson" or something, do you?
- freudianslipper, on 01/21/2008, -1/+5It's not like "fanboys" are exclusive to just apple, you either enjoy a product or you don't. I hate that word, fanboy. It's just a dig at people who don't agree with another group of people. At least you gave valid reasons for not wanting an iphone currently and I definitely agree, carrying two devices sucks.
- Chirp08, on 01/21/2008, -2/+6Too early to say it's going to fail. It has the potential but they are really going to need to redo their apps to complete with the Blackberry.
- emiller, on 01/21/2008, -3/+7Wake me when I can sync with my BES.
- aaronm67, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Douche. Man, if you're going to insult, learn to spell.
- maisis00, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Lotus Notes integration?! WTF, who cares! While I am not a huge fan of MS Exchange either Lotus Notes truly blows. It has always been a painful application to run.
Honestly a better idea would be for both IBM and MS to give up and build their corporate server sync technology for the corporate email, calendar and contact server by using open standardized communication methods such as IMAP and LDAP. Stop screwing your customers with cheese ass proprietary protocols that force people to use cumbersome and inadequate mail clients. - jonshipman, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3This isn't engad... Oh wait
- mrBitch, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4Except for interfacing to Exchange via IMAP - How will that EVER be possible ?
Exchange mail protocols are locked bown by Microsoft. There is NO other " open " way of connecting to Exchange - except via IMAP ( There are competitors who offer Exchange " gateways " but every time Microsoft updates Exchange Server and Outlook clients, the " gateways " break ! ) - Heavy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3What in the name of GOD have the iPhone owners done do deserve the divine punishment of using lotus notes?
Lotus notes the digital equivalent of being kicked in the balls upon arriving at work. - Kythas, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4Who cares about Lotus Notes support? Do companies really still use that?
- sjbdallas, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Agreed blackberry still dominates but IT depts are going to get slammed now trying to make these secure.
- Catch_ME, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4I don't think the iphone will do good with businesses because they don't support the basic requirements from there IT department. You need real push email. Like blackberry or Microsoft direct Push. The iphone doesn't even support microsoft exchange which is big. It only supports IMAP4 which most IT departments will never open though exchange.
- damnyooneek, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3next month the sdk will come out and it will eat windows mobile alive.
- SinisterBunni, on 01/21/2008, -2/+4YEA!! The iPhone is going to support Notes... who gives a rat's ass about Blowtus Notes support.
- quikboy, on 01/21/2008, -5/+7I don't see this taking over the WinMo phones at my workplace. But it's a nice try.
- damnyooneek, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2this is the first step. you will get push email and everything else in between when the sdk comes out in feb i''m 100% sure. there's no reason why they would make a business plan if this wasnt in the future.
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -2/+4What about PEAP?!!?
- RiPPn, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Does this mean the company discount that you had on your AT&T account that did not apply to the iPhone can now be applied? I sure hope so cause my service went up about $25 a month with what was essentially the same minutes and unlimited Internet service I had on 2 Windows Mobile phones prior to upgrading them to the iPhone.
- youareretarded, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Didn't the latest firmware update for the iphone include cut and paste capabilities?
- Refrag, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2The 3G myth has been busted. http://www.ipodobserver.com/story/34035
The iPhone has a keyboard that is very easy to type on and just got easier with 1.1.3 (it's now truly multi-touch). A few Blackberry & Treo users that have made the switch have reported that they can type faster on the iPhone. - howitzeral, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3Nope
- Refrag, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3Maybe Exchange should fully support open standards?
- heystoopid, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Suckers !
- FluffyArmada, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2He didn't say he wouldn't buy it because of the fans. He's waiting for Blackberry Enterprise Server compatibility.
- daborg, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Not unless you completely discount the reasons they limited themselves to AT&T. Oh wait, we can't do that.
- Testiculese, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Well, yea, every admin I've talked to save one said no way. About 90%!
- SPECOPS, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1yeah, well I'm not disagreeing with you (I mean AT&T uses Lotus Notes for email too - and we know how they love raping us) - but hey, there are big companies out there that use Lotus notes. Digg me down, I don't care, but you're not going to change the facts by doing so.
- SinisterBunni, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I can tell you first hand that you don't know your ass from 3rd base. I work for one of the companies you listed and they DO NOT use Blowtus Notes. Yes, some companies do use it but it far from being the market leader that it once was.
- daborg, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1... While having your IT department force feed you gravel mixed with crude oil.
- jazzboyrules, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1The $45 does not include voice. How is this plan better than the $20 iPhone data plan? I don't get it. What's new in the Enterprise iPhone Data plan? Source: "New Corporate Responsibility Users and other corporate-liable users (CRUs) must activate an eligible voice service plan for iPhone and an Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone." from https://www.wireless.att.com/business/iphone/?bref ...
- daborg, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Win.
- disp, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Amen, I still can't get on my university's campus-wide wifi
- PhilMoskowitz, on 01/21/2008, -2/+3AT&T are making plans for universal monitoring of all internet services. So if you want to subject your corporation to this, go nuts.
- Testiculese, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Just because you don't do anything but YouTube on your iPhone doesn't mean it's good. The list of features that the iPhone is missing (basic features) is what is laughable. The fact that you have to risk bricking a $600 phone because you want a ringtone is ***** hysterical. I've been making ringtones for myself and friends for two years. I can change any of the system sounds (Calendar alerts and whatnot). I can change my battery. I can change what is displayed on the 'main screen' I can change the background picture. I can make my own background picture. I can install any one of a million applications. I can write my own applications for it. I have email, sms, text and mms. I have a hot-swappable SD slot with a 4gb card in it. I have had GPS software for a long time now. I have wireless, infrared (like anyone uses it) and Bluetooth. I have a remote-desktop for my phone like PC Anywhere, so I can control it on my computer with mouse and keyboard. I can use any USB plug to connect to my computer like a flash drive. I can copy any files I want to the phone with Windows Explorer. I can skin the built-in applications as I wish. I have a tactile, slide out full qwerty keyboard. And I have copy/paste.
Damn, and I haven't even scratched the surface.
So how DO you manage? Oh, just Youtube and Myspace on your iPhone? Holy ***** stop the presses, I have to have one now... - narula, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1did you notice how iPod touch users are paying for this latest upgrade - via their iTunes account? Expect something similar for any functionality that requires Apple to pay royalties. Think 802.11n enabler for $2.99!!!
- slvrbullet87, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1We light the oil first... truthfully i hate notes i hate its set up, i hate the fact is has horrible usibility, i hate display design and i even hate the orange icon
