- Yashar, on 10/10/2007, -19/+251Thanks for telling me why they called it an iPod and not an iPhone.
/sarcasm - JEWestbrookJR, on 10/10/2007, -5/+91They forgot to mention the monthly bill feature
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+63The last thing iPods need are speakers. I do NOT want to have to listen to someone else's crappy music because they'd rather use their iPod's built-in speaker than be courteous and use headphones.
- igucham, on 10/10/2007, -11/+63Worst article ever.
- jspegele, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31That's true, except for the built in WiFi.

- jcoakes9, on 10/10/2007, -10/+28I like my iPod touch, but it has so much wasted potential. Maybe if it had an editable calendar, weather, and some notes I would love it. Is POP e-mail to much to ask? I CAN input text on it, but why won't you let me? What am I supposed to do with this wifi? And why are my blacks shimmering? I can only hope they will fix my screen on Monday, but what about the rest?
Steve, I don't love it, I like it. Why won't you let me love it? - fezzasus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Burried because everyone on digg knows this from the scores of iphone articles each day.
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17The Rear Surface is the main reason my next iPod will be an iPhone and not an iPod Touch. I am sick of these scratchy chromed backings.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Who's Canada Steve?
- BZKyle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Can you not use the "keyboard" while in Safari? o.O
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11My favorite feature I'm missing is paying 60 dollars a month for it to work!
- isaactwito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I think the point of all the debate surrounding the iPod touch is that Apple presented it in a way that looks like it could be an iPhone without the phone. People got excited that they could have a cool pda type thing and keep their phones. Then when people started getting them and reviewing them they learned that they weren't nearly as exciting as Apple could have made them. It's really a shame what they did with this because Apple could have delivered a product that huge numbers of people would want, but instead they're too busy trying to push the iPhone and have neglected to see how successful a pda type iPod would be.
- cypherz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Random thoughts about this article and other reviews:
I got my iPod Touch last Friday at noon. After using it for a couple of days, I have some comments regarding all the features it lacks. This article and many others emphasize the missing features, and while I think it's OK to mention the missing features, most of the reviews I've read (so far) are missing the point: The Touch is the best iPod available. The user interface alone makes it a worthwhile purchase. The lack of storage isn't even an issue for me. since I don't listen to my whole library all the time. The 16 Gb storage is sufficient for the current songs and TV that I'm watching. I've had lots of other portable media players, including Archos and Creative players. The only one I haven't owned is the Zune. (Nice player but all my home systems are Macs.) The point is that this is the absolute best media player you can get, missing features and all. I had to use it for a day to come to this conclusion. I'm sure the next models will be even better, but if you want the best *media player* available on planet Earth at this time, it's the iPod Touch.
The screen is different from the iPhone, but not really that much of a problem. It requires the screen to be very slightly tilted away from the viewer in order to get the best contrast for very dark material. Increasing the brightness somewhat past the middle setting (it defaults to the middle of the brightness range) fixes the problem for all but the darkest videos. Those are pleasantly viewable with a slight tilt of the iPod.
The mail application would be nice to add, but since I use gmail most of the time, it's not a feature that I miss.
I'd like to see a VNC client, and Terminal application. Then it would be a good replacement for my Nokia webpad, but the Touch is a *media player*, and it does media stuff better than any player I've yet owned. - elants, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The /sarcasm announcement always kills the sarcasm for me. Plus, we miss out on the hilarious comments of the people who do not get it.
- mike81890, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7so.. it blends? is that what he is telling me?
- MrViklund, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Dugg down because of criticism of Apple.
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I have an iPod touch and while it's very impressive, it's going back. For only $50 more then a refurb iPhone adds all the things mentioned in the article making it a better value even if you don't use it as a phone.
Plus, the iPod Touch screen is inferior to the iPhone and blacks come out as negative-black. Maybe it's a defect but here's my comparison video of Firefly on a Nano and Touch (Nevermind the hideous Nano Case. It's only until my ebay case arrives).

YouTube: iPod Nano vs Touch 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYxlrsReUEU - S1ngular1ty1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Why would I expect an MP3 / Video player to have Bluetooth, a calender, a web browswer, wifi, a notes app, etc.. when all it really needs to do is play videos and music. Any features added in addition to being able to play music and videos are just the so called cherry on top of what already is the sweetest MP3 and video player on the market. No offense to the iPod video, but I'm not going to watch video on any device with a screen as small as the iPod video's screen.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Nice edit of the article, dude :p
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6why would you do that? You don't activate it before you unlock it. Why would you activate it on AT&T just to unlock it and use a different carrier? that doesn't make any sense.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6@jcoakes9: You got it spot on. And there's no reason for Apple to leave these features out given the price of the thing. Apart from maybe rushing it to market (firmware update please) or manipulating their customers (play nice now Apple).
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8not only that but could you imagine the ***** tinny noise coming from something like that?
- Bleeblaow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You will also lose out on negative money. Who would want that?
- ricodued, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It's not news, it's FA... er.. digg.
Honestly, how is this even worthy of an article, much less considered news? - rento, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Apple why are you such a jerk!? Why on one side you please me and on the other you stab me?
iPod touch ( :) ) has no built in speakers and less screen quality than the iPhone ( :-( ) ??
iPod classic ( :) ) still not wide-screen ( :-( ) ?
I thought the days of the single mouse button were ended!! Get a grip! - blogger123, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6you know what other feature I miss out on? the 2 year contract with at&t, and believe you me I'm fine with that
- daGUY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This is dumb. If you add back in all the features of the iPhone that were left out of the Touch, you end up with...an iPhone! At the same price! In the same form factor!
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Why get an iPhone then? Clearly, it's an obvious upsell and they want your business. It's not evil, it's just the way corporations work. Anyway, 16GB iPhone will be out soon enough to help with the space problem. No doubt, you can't have the iPhone not be the best at everything.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Apple si working hard to screw this up aren't they?
First the iPhone comes out with PDA features so crippled it's usable only by the rabid fanboy base and people who have never actually used a PDA. No copy / paste? No Internet while on the phone? Are you SERIOUS? Oh wait, they'll forgive you because your Apple.
The the most insulting proce drop on a cunsumer item in the last 5 years... but it's OK, your fan base will suck that up too.
Now the iPod Touch - which many of us who hated AT&T might have been willing to purchase as a cool iPod / PDA combo - and whammo ... the screen sucks, the software is crippled and the price point still sucks.
Good going Apple. Way to keep Palm in business. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Most of those features that are "missing" shouldn't have ever been there anyway. It's an iPOD!!! NOT a phone, that's the freaking point."
The thing is, it already has WiFi, and they already have the software, so it costs them absolutely nothing to include things like Mail or maps or proper notes and calender.
Going by the "it's an iPod" philosophy, half of the features it *does* have also shouldn't be on there, but they are, and there is very little rhyme and reason to which things they've kept, and which things they've left out. - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That looks horrible.
- preshit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Oh God ! I almost bought the Touch tomorrow. Now I'll be opting for the 8GB nano instead. I'll buy the iPhone when they announce the 2nd generation of price cuts.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4point: either spend the extra $100 for the iphone or just buy the ipod classic
- KayinAngel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5i think the argument wasn't actually an argument. he meant the bill is another iphone feature thats missing on the ipod touch. why does everything have to be a ***** argument?
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just to clarify. I'm not saying "don't buy it". i'm just giving the warning that you should check out dark videos immediately because this is obviously a gen1 problem that will be fixed eventually. I've read many comments where Apple stores blame the problem on the video file rather than hardware and are charging a restock fee. Don't fall for that, this is definitely a hardware problem.
My advice is to buy from Best Buy since they have no restock fee on mp3 returns. - JerodSlay, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I recently learned that neither the iPhone nor the iPod Touch support PEAP for wifi. This means that you can't connect to many corporate networks (my school uses it, too).
I was going to drop my phone's data plan and just use the wifi beacuse I spend most of my time at home/work/school, but 2 of the three I can't use their wifi.
Waiting to iPhone 2.0 I guess w/16+GB,PEAP,video recording. - GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Apple can be stubborn about certain things. Fixed battery. Non-expandable memory. No third party app support. Poor headphones that nobody ends up using. Backing that easily scratches.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4most dick headed article I've ever read.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah very little of this stuff is needed on an MP3 PLAYER though.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3dugg down from using 'OMFG'. No class.
- wilsgrant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Except not. You can use pay as you go even with AT&T. They just don't advertise it.
- tiberone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It really is...
"The only missing feature I've found in Safari (so far) is the ability to email a web link, which has a lot to do with the iPod touch not having an email client."
Woow. - knde, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I just bought the 8GB Nano and it's excellent!
Does anyone know if you can buy the iPhone and NOT set up a contract with AT&T? I'm in America for less than 3mnths each year, so I'm certainly not going to sign up for a 2yr contract. Is there any way I could just use the iPhone as an iPod Touch only? From the reviews it seem the iPod touch is inferior to the iPhone (though I don't actually want the phone capabilities). - Torpov, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And I don't remember the 4Gs doing video. Kinda hard to do it in black and white, I think.
- diggimator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Indeed, they fixed the battery issue. The iPod mini could play audio continuously for only 3hrs, but nanos nowadays can play for 24hrs.
iProng is spreading cluelessness with regard to the chrome backing. Chrome backing is the most scratch resistant surface of the iPod nano according to PC World torture test video: http://www.pcworld.com/video/id,589-page,1-bid,0/video.html - P373Y, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4i would like you to show me one ipod that has built in speakers. heres some help
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod#Models - DarkFusion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No contract with Pay as you go.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good thing I've just bought an Iphone 8gb, and being in Europe I've paid 100 bucks less (€300 for me, ipod touch will be also €300) without a contract (minus $60 per month). It's a no brainer for us here in Europe....
- beggersfunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bloody hell Apple, i would buy an iPhone if theey release it in Japan...damn it. I prefer iphone instead of the touch simply because i dont want to carry any more crapp im my pocket. But what choices do we have in Japan...beside the iTouch.
