- Ireland, on 12/04/2007, -17/+122That's cause the iPhone's browser is actually worth using, especially over Wifi ;)
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -13/+93That's because browsing the web with a Windows Mobile device is like picking your nose with a safety pin.
- LaughingMan11, on 12/04/2007, -9/+42This is not surprising, given that the default browser on Windows Mobile is Pocket Internet Explorer. Pocket Internet Explorer renders most web pages poorly, is slow, and kludgy. Even without Flash capability, the Webkit based browsers like Safari on the iPhone are much more usable.
Put it into perspective. There are likely tens of millions of Windows Mobile smartphones in use today worldwide, at least 10 times as many as the iPhone, but iPhone users are many times more likely to use their web browser. - 5hocker, on 12/04/2007, -2/+35http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5oGaZIKYvo
- JasonCox, on 12/04/2007, -26/+58BREAKING: I can actually install programs on Windows Mobile without hacking my device, browser apps arent needed
- suprememilo, on 12/04/2007, -8/+38Does this take into consideration that a lot of people with Windows Mobile use Opera Mini?
- VulnoX, on 12/04/2007, -11/+38Yeah I use Opera and have it identify as just a mobile browser, not a Windows Mobile device.
See, Windows Mobile gives you these fun things called options. You aren't forced to use PocketIE, or anything else.
Now, when you have these options, you tend to use different things from the person next to you.
Unlike the iPhone where everyone uses the same things. So this is a poor, POOR, example of accurate data.
Lets do a survey on how many people play games on their Windows Mobile device vs. the iPhone, or how many use expandable memory on their WM phones vs. the iPhone. Or any number of things my WM phone does the iPhone can't.
God I am so tired of hearing about that stupid ass phone. It has a great interface, but is not in the same league as a BB or a WM phone. Its for simple people with simple needs. Stick to that because its one area it beats WM. Stop trying to make it something it isn't. - epithius, on 12/04/2007, -6/+32Windows 95 only has four times the marketshare as the iPhone.
W T F - RubberBinder, on 12/04/2007, -6/+28Ha! Take that Firefox..... oh wait.
- kevinmoore, on 06/13/2009, -7/+25These numbers are ridiculous. I know I'm not the only Windows Mobile user that has Opera Mobile send a Windows XP user agent.
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -8/+24This guy's numbers are completely screwed up. Windows Mobile shipped ten million phones this year year and is planning to double that next year. http://www.cellular-news.com/story/23478.php Microsoft to Ship 20 Million Windows Mobile Licenses in 2008
Are they even counting the DeepFish browser? - inactive, on 12/04/2007, -12/+26Another fact avoided: 92.43% of every page viewed online is on a Microsoft product. Yay Apple!
- skeen07, on 12/04/2007, -5/+18Yep, you can't argue with Safari on the iPhone - it's excellent. Sure, we still need copy/paste - we'll get that soon enough, but apart from that the browsing experience is almost as good as on a "big" screen. I've browsed on the iPhone for hours - I couldn't do that with Opera Mini and others, with their limitations.
- Netrilix, on 12/04/2007, -3/+16See, I didn't want to be a cox and point that out, but it's true.
- chewbaka, on 12/04/2007, -1/+13I guess all those times I've browsed contently over EDGE, must've imagined that.
- skeen07, on 12/04/2007, -1/+12EDGE is surprisingly okay. The iPhone could do with some better caching though.
- SPECOPS, on 12/04/2007, -8/+19Why is that a bad thing? Most flash usage is for advertisements anyway.
- cipher64, on 12/04/2007, -4/+15People use all sorts of browsers on their windows mobile phone. I guess this just says iPhone users only have the safari available to them on the iPhone.
- neftaly, on 12/04/2007, -11/+22Finally, the infallable might of Pocket IE has been toppled!
- JordanTW90, on 12/04/2007, -10/+20Thats generally what happens when you REQUIRE that buyers get a media plan.
- Netrilix, on 12/04/2007, -3/+13Damn, I missed my edit time... But since you've opened that can of worms, I can also copy and paste on my wifi-enabled touchscreen smartphone.
- petard, on 12/04/2007, -5/+15Maybe because they are forced to have a data plan with them? (until very recently).
Many people with Windows Mobile devices don't have data plans, but if they were forced to, they will probably use the internet more often. - luchid, on 12/04/2007, -3/+13Yes, please give me a CPU and RAM hogging POS software to drain my battery and slow everything down on my phone.
- tibbon, on 12/04/2007, -4/+14Honestly I don't find the EDGE network to be that bad. Then again I'm in Boston where 90% of the time I can find a wi-fi spot, and I'm coming from a Treo 650 (which takes nearly 10 minutes to load up Google some days).
- Blackforge, on 12/04/2007, -1/+10If you lose your device, I can enforce a password, do a remote wipe on Windows Mobile/Blackberry device and prevent any unnecessary data getting into the wrong people's hands.
Manage/Sync Calendar & Contacts from the device, accept meeting requests and they all sync back to the server over the air.
I can reset my Windows Mobile device totally and just re-establish my ActiveSync connection without having to be connected to a computer and re-sync my calendar, contacts, tasks and e-mail just over the air. You can do something similar with a Blackberry using an Enterprise Activation password.
Those are just a few things... - frostieDude, on 12/04/2007, -4/+13I had a Treo 600 with a data plan. I found the browser to be completely useless. Now I have an iPhone and I am posting this comment with it.
- luchid, on 12/04/2007, -2/+10Not even close, buddy...
- eexlebots, on 12/04/2007, -4/+12Like the Google homepage?
- TheNik, on 12/04/2007, -3/+11Because downat420, whose name blatantly presents a vast professional knowledge, said so.
- mcnearcj, on 12/04/2007, -2/+10I read digg over edge (minus the comments because they usually crash the phone) and it loads fast enough considering I'm only paying $20 a month including txt.
- misterbum, on 12/04/2007, -2/+9I pay $15 for unlimited data on my Mogul through Sprint. And that's for EV-DO. Mobile Opera suits me well enough for the light browsing I need to do every now and then to check online banking, check my personal gmail account, ect...
- asskey, on 12/04/2007, -1/+8WHAT...THE...*****?
- Netrilix, on 12/04/2007, -2/+9My smartphone has built-in wifi, which I can pick up most places I go. If not, I can always jump online on a data plan or pay-as-you-go data. The browser is I.E, but I have a custom-built portal for it to bring me the stuff I need, so it's not too bad, and I can always install Opera if I feel like it. Plus my phone isn't locked to AT&T/Cingular.
- fonetikly, on 12/04/2007, -3/+10This also may have something to do with the fact that all legit iPhones have the unlimited data package. When you don't pay by the byte, you probably tend to use it more.
- WiseWeasel, on 12/04/2007, -0/+7Win ME, you're next buddy!
- lopinc1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6Actually, you idiot, since WM browsers don't view the desktop version of websites the iphones do, it will always be lower. Likewise, iphone's reach into mobile specific sites is probably a very small fraction of WM devices.
- Entheoddity, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7It is truly amazing what a giant ball of hype can do.
- zachriggle, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7I think that's a mess-up on their part. The chart directly below shows that the iPhone has over 4 times the market share (0.09 vs 0.02) as Win95.
- mal1964, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7Closed or open?
- pyrates, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6The article sums it up best when it said that since most iphone users have an unlimited data plan, they'll most likely use their browser on their. Compare that to the windows mobile users who don't all have data plans and you'll get far less usage. This article is far from accurate. But at least it points out what the inaccuracies are.
The digger's outline of the article is completely inaccurate though. Therefore buried. - tnoy, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Yes, the iPhone is great because some day you'll possibly have the apps you need.
- gllopc, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Ummm.... AT&T.
- davidrools, on 12/04/2007, -2/+7yeah windows ME is used more than the iphone...does that make it better?
- WiseWeasel, on 12/04/2007, -1/+6You're ignoring the fact that this is countered by the Win Mobile users using their phone to scratch their ass, thereby loading several web pages accidentally and driving up their page view stats... Seriously, WORST ARGUMENT EVAR!
- WiseWeasel, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5You make an excellent point. From my brief experimentation, using a CLOSED safety pin seems ideal for my nose-picking needs. I'm off to test out the OPEN configuration. Call 911 if you don't hear back from this brave test subject...
- annonimality, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6"The reason that Apple's browser marketshare is higher while its unit sales are much lower is explained easily by the oft-touted Mobile Safari browser and unlimited AT&T data plan. No guilt, pleasurable, full-browser surfing." - For those of us who actually read the article we already got that point.
- cleverboy, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6You probably mean "elusive", but past that... if the majority of the websites I visited used Flash, and not well formated HTML, CSS, Ajax, and images to display content... yeah, I'd pretty much have to shoot myself. Not even Adobe recommends using Flash gratuitously across your website. Let plugins remain optional. Pass it on.
- VulnoX, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4No, I would be one of the last to say that WM was perfect, especially not Pocket IE. It does not surprise me that Safari would be PocketIE because Safari is far better than PocketIE. But Pocket IE does not equal Windows Mobile. I know you know that, but its obvious the poster does not have a clue.
If you have not tried it yet, try Picsel browser. It works a lot like Safari (and was out first). - AndrewWiggin, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Same deal for me and the email. I use the iPhone most of the time for reading emails (and responding too as long as it's short) and my MacBook less and less.
- bglav, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5First, use the reply button. Second... ?
