iPhone benchmarks suggest JavaScript performance deficits
arstechnica.com — Iconfactory's Craig Hockenberry has benchmarked the performance of JavaScript on the iPhone against JavaScriot on an iMac, and then again against the native UIKit. The results definitely show the need for native iPhone apps.

- rblinne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's not the Mac comparison that is important but rather the comparison to UIKit.
- lord2800, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As a matter of fact, no one expected the iphone to beat a desktop in a speed test. The catch is that the iphone is _considerably_ slower than the desktop, which is a problem. Think of it this way: if your desktop is a regular car, then the iphone is a bicycle with deflated tires, when it comes to running javascript. _That_ is the significance of comparing it to a desktop.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We'll be lost without a native SETI@iPhone!
/sarcasm - vpeter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I know that I'll be dugg down for this, but my 200 MHz T-mobile MDA performed better than the iPhone.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's an indication of just how accurate the reported timings may be.
- lord2800, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or how poorly optimized the iphone's javascript engine is.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or how poorly you'd like to believe it is, because an unscientific analysis doesn't mean jack. I've never had a smart phone that was as responsive as the iPhone. IMNSHO that accounts for more than an unfounded benchmark.
- lord2800, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, because your touchy-feely "I think it's responsive so it is" kind of benchmarks are just _so_ much better than possibly inaccurate timings. Tell you what -- you write up an agnostic test library designed to test at least 4 standard features of javascript (anonymous object/function creation, iteration in all different loop forms, assignment, and string/regular expression speed) and THEN we'll talk. Until then, my comment about the state of the iphone's javascript engine stands as-is.
