- khalib540, on 10/28/2008, -1/+57Taking your laptop into the can during a dump is looked down upon. Taking your iPhone in is acceptable. Therefore, my days are 17% more efficient.
- supersheep7, on 10/29/2008, -0/+29This article was a waste of time. All it does is reach the vacuous conclusion that an iPhone can replace your laptop if the laptop features you need are on the iPhone. Durrr.
- frogman54, on 10/29/2008, -1/+22Do you think someday we'll reach a point when tech journalists finally say, "You know what, we've written every possible thing about the iPhone. What the hell do we do now?"
- Spamcan, on 10/28/2008, -2/+21It really depends on what you need a laptop for and what kind of laptop you happen to be talking about. As long as you don't have to do any heavy typing (at any point in time, ever) then I'd say the iPhone could be a decent replacement for a cheap laptop that's just used for web browsing and game playing easily. It's certainly not going to replace anyone's work laptop as trying to shoot off multi-sentence e-mails from that thing is a task from hell.
- bigbangbuddha, on 10/29/2008, -1/+14I do NOT want to know where you Dugg this from!
- tom53086, on 10/29/2008, -0/+11I wouldn't hold your breath. I don't see apple going in that direction... ever. bluetooth, sure. the rest... just don't hold your breath...
- USAOwnz, on 10/28/2008, -1/+8Thank god for texting, too. Conversations with people taking a dump isn't too pleasant =
- TheGreatBelow, on 10/29/2008, -2/+9Phones will never replace a pc/laptop for me. Screen is just too small.
- lalalalamppost, on 10/29/2008, -0/+7Give me a bluetooth keyboard for the iphone and I'd leave my macbook pro at home for most things.
- doiveo, on 10/28/2008, -2/+8I have been able to do about 15% of my work on my Treo 700. Still not very efficient but this should increase with the bigger screen and power of the new phones.
- roxgod666, on 10/29/2008, -10/+15uhh no
typing essay=no
watching movies=no
browsing web=kinda but still no
porn=no
Unless you use a computer strictly for email, it's a no - PilotHead, on 10/29/2008, -2/+7this is, hands down, the STUPIDEST article I have ever read. Email, internet, music, and scheduling is something my old Motorola L7 has been doing for years (a lot cheaper too), it can never replace a laptop.
Did the author use a laptop or his iPhone to write that article? - mikebenson, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5I do most of my web dev "producer" work with email, skype, basecamp and harvest... i could in theory work off an iPhone and have been toying with the idea for a while now.
- Bostocks, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5It still needs to be a little less crashy. especially when using safari.
- wrathoftheafe, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5just make more lists.
- NathanielJ, on 10/29/2008, -0/+5I don't know about you, but I personally use my laptop to do more than send e-mails and keep track of appointments.
- crowbar77, on 10/29/2008, -1/+6Umm the biggest selling point of the iphone is the touch screen, so don't expect them to get rid of that.
- raydeen, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4If the iPhone had more PDA capabilities, maybe. I've got an iPaq and it's done a decent job of web/email/word processing/spreadsheet/etc. I wouldn't want to use it for the brunt of my work but it's good in a pinch.
- lidri, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4"the main on-the-road tasks you complete center around managing email, checking figures from a work intranet and being entertained while travelling, it could provide a fantastic replacement"
Cool. Phones have been able to do this for many years now, what a pointless article. No way an iPhone could ever replace my laptop, i guess I do more then just send emails when I work... - GothAlice, on 10/29/2008, -0/+4The only thing missing from the iPhone to replace my laptop for 90% of my mobile computing requirements (primarily server administration via SSH and web) would be bluetooth Keyboard support. Throw one of those disgustingly tiny Apple Bluetooth keyboards in my bag and my iPhone in my holster, and I'd be ready for anything, including massive failure of aging servers. (Hint, boss, hint.)
- jaycalgary, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Are you some kind of jerk off? Ya less=fewer go figure
- ButterLoyalist, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3i like my iphone, but its no replacement for a laptop.
- Gonasadude, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Wow, I wish my job were so easy that I could do all of it in any sort of way on an iPhone. However, I could definitely see myself using one of these badboys: http://www.oqo.com/
- tom53086, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3clearly it can't replace a pc. no question of that. but laptop? it all depends on what you use it for. for some perhaps it is sufficient, but overall i don't think it can replace your laptop. it could greatly reduce your need for your laptop. but there are some features that you need to use while being mobile that will never be possible (or at least efficiently) on a phone. period
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+4...if it'll come with a 10 inch screen.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3Well especially in 3rd world and developing countries like Africa, India, China etc, mobile phones will be the main medium between the public and the Internet. They won't be using expensive iPhones, but they will be using sub-$50 3G phones. And with a Google partnership set to connect potentially 3 BILLION new users to the Internet via the launch of 16 satellites... within the next 2-5 years... the mobile phone is where it's at for developers.
- arapro, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4Are you sure you are checking emails or just playing games to take your mind off ....
- diegoplanas, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2I'll do better off with an N800 or N810.... more laptop like
And a bit better for some things than the iPhone.... (I'm posting this from my N800) - asskicker32, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3I was just thinking this today when I was thinking "*****, I wish I had my laptop" and then I remebered I could use mobile terminal to ping test. Then once I remembered I could access my laptop through the internet and my external facing server, I connected using RDP lite and I was right in front of my computer!
The more I use it, the more I think I could replace my computer wiht the iphone... - Phelyx, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3It's not a laptop. Laptops can be used as laptops. The iPhone is excellent for all of the stuff I do when I don't need to bring a laptop along. It's in my pocket and it can do a whole lot of useful tricks, but it's not a laptop any more than my small car is a pickup truck. I guess you could say a small car is a great pickup truck as long as you make lots of trips back and forth to transport whatever you need to transport. But a small car is just not a pickup truck. Use a pickup truck if you need a pickup truck.
- camkerr, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3I *could* do a lot of my mobile work on an iPhone, but in my case, its more money (monthly charges) for less functionality.
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3my girlfriend replaced me with an iPhone :-(
- thurows, on 10/29/2008, -4/+6Not! Buried, this is lame. Can't make generalities. Of course in 25, 30 years who knows.
- Gaffigan, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3I definitely use my 3g iPhone a lot, mainly when I'm out with friends or at work.
While it is definitely no laptop replacement, it sure is nice having the internet, music, pictures, and tons of cool games in my pocket. - fuelcarddotorg, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3If I could copy/paste with the damn thing I would need my laptop a LOT less. who cares about streetview or rating applications, add copy paste apple!
- iChopPryde, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2I love typing on my iphone I have yet to meet someone who can type faster then myself using any Blackberry, Motorola's or any other smart phones.
- rand21althor, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3Interesting seeing this article, as just the other day, one of my friends at Uni mentioned how he basically got an iPhone to use as a replacement for the laptop he had been carrying around.
- badtz, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3The iPhone has dramatically reduced my "want" for a portable notebook like the MacBook Air. Before the iPhone, I was hoping for Apple to produce a super thin notebook that's LIGHT, but now with the iPhone, I can do [almost] everything I need to on the go (with the help of some 3rd party apps) ... definitely enough to suffice my thirst.
- jarnot, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Until I can author Word or Excel docs on my iPhone, it can't be a 100% replacement. Most other tasks - email, web surfing, etc. - it does a fantastic job.
- znicket, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2I used to take my MBP with me when going on business trips but have stopped doing so after I got my Ipod Touch. My needs basically consist of having information at my fingertips and being able to respond to emails quickly. This I can easily do with the Touch and it has made my travels considerably lighter.
However, if I am going for a longer period of time - more than 4 days - then I would definitely need the laptop for more robust work. - wrathoftheafe, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2you sound like a ***** commercial.
- inactive, on 10/29/2008, -1/+3Not if they're all crippled with the type of stupid design decisions Apple routinely makes. In the iPhone's case, they have a portable computer with Bluetooth that doesn't support Bluetooth keyboards. WTF? I could hook a folding keyboard up to my $180 8MB Handspring Visor a decade ago.
But then what should we expect from the company that made a phone that's also an iPod but only has MONO audio over Bluetooth, while even Motorola has offered stereo Bluetooth for years. And they compounded that blunder by making a headphone jack that 99 percent of headphone plugs wouldn't fit into.
Well, at least with the rumored upcoming ability to turn off the forced "corrections" to what you're typing, there's hope that someday the iPhone's potential as a computer can be explored. - bipolarruledout, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2Even with RDP it's still a pain in the ass. Most professionals need the use of a capable keyboard which is why none of the hardcore crackberry users are leaving the platform anytime soon.
- robbob, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2dung it
- Spamcan, on 10/29/2008, -0/+2I don't believe it, I've been using an iPhone for over a year and I can barely type 5 WPM whereas when I had a phone with a tactile thumb-board I could type about half as fast as I can with a full size keyboard. You must have extremely thin thumbs or developed some kind of extremely awkward typing method in order to get any kind of speed or accuracy out of the software keyboard.
- deepleet, on 10/29/2008, -2/+4Can't copy & paste.
Can't run crysis. - bipolarruledout, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1People buy laptops and PDA's for a reason. While it's true that PDA's do a lot more these days so do laptops.
- mitch37, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- wrathoftheafe, on 10/29/2008, -1/+2if my laptop crashed every other time i tried to visit a website with images, i'd return that ***** in a heartbeat.
