- DwindleFlip, on 08/07/2008, -0/+4It happened to me 15 or 16 times now. I've lost all of my app data each time. Between backing up the iPhone which takes 3 hours, and the constant crashing and restoring... My iPhone spends more time in the dock than it does in use as a phone.
I'm extremely furious with Apple. I can not believe they rushed the iphone 2.0 software to market without properly QA testing it. These bugs are SERIOUS show stopping bugs. These bugs would not make it out of any major software developer, but some how Apple released this messy code. I suspect it was all to make their hard deadline for Apple 3G.
This isnt the first problem with Apple... iTunes for windows is the WORST coded program ever to grace a CPU. I cant for the life of me, figure out why iTunes is so slow that i can barely scroll my song list on a QUADCORE QX6700 system with 8GB of ram. I can NOT beleive a simple database program performs that bad. Just how much power does one need to actually run iTunes smoothly? Winamp and foobar run perfectly smooth on my computer, and many earlier generations of hardware such as AMD 2000+ etc.
I just dont get it. Why cant Apple program software properly? They have to have the worst programmers in the industry. Remember how long it took them to get quicktime for windows running on windows? And guess what... its still slow as a dog, lacks features and doesnt even display properly in firefox.
Does Apple do this on purpose? Do they purposely cripple the PC versions of their software? Is it some sick way to inspire PC users to buy Apple computers? I cant imagine that being the case, because WHY would i buy anything made by Apple if they cant even program a quality program for the PC?
I was becoming a fan Apple... I am no longer one. They're just a mess. Their software, their iPhone... their iTunes, Quicktime... everything is buggy, slow and flat out doesnt work well.
They've either stretched themselves too far... or just dont care.
This entire iPhone thing has rendered my iPhone worthless. I have to use it delicately, in fear that i will kill it, and have no phone when i'm out on the road. The WORST part of it, is that if the dam thing crashes like this... you have to go home to restore it!!! You cant use it at all until you do!!! AND you lose your data!
I think it's time "Think Different" and look else where. Apple has let me down consistantly. iTunes has been a f'n mess for years now... ridiculously slow and sloppy. If it werent for the features, and my ipods, i'd be done with it all together. - brunodelfrate, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3More articles about this crazy bug:

http://weblogs.redeyechicago.com/iphoneblog/2008/0 ... - GreenAlien, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2This is a good overview. I experienced everything described in the article after having my iPhone 3G for about a week. Was using 2.0.1 firmware for a couple days prior to the problem so it hasnt been fixed yet.
While installing an app my iPhone rebooted then got stuck at the Apple logo. I did a factory reset then attempted to restore from a backup, but I was told the backup was corrupt. So I lost all calendar entries, address book, and a host of other app settings, bookmarks, Wifi access settings and so on. Although I made backups every day, the last time I backed up I skipped the backup (because I'd already made one that day) and went on to the sync part, but I didn't realise this invalidates the backup too! - very poor.
Because I evidently can't rely on the backups (and I don't use Outlook on Windows) I'm trying to sort out some kind of sync to ensure calendar and contacts get backed up. Mobile Me is the obvious choice but their IMAP email is very underpowered (no server-side filtering etc) so it's an expensive solution for what I'd be using it for.
Apple have had nothing but quality control issues lately. - mopcodes, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2Good Article regarding a serious problem that Apple is not acknowledging about the iPhone, iTunes and iTunes App Store.
- DwindleFlip, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I also tried to contact Ars Technica about this, and their contact form is broken as you well know. I wrote CNN about this. I recommend spreading this as far as you can... Apple needs to deal with this and feel the pain.
- Exivus, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1You know what's bad... I tried to post this article to Apple's forums at:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID ...
And I got this reply from Apple:
Thank you for your interest in Apple products. The Host Team members, like you, are excited to see what kinds of products Apple will release in the future; however speculation or rumors are not allowed under our terms of use (http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa). Your recent post, titled "Re: Incoming Call During Sync Completely Crashes iPhone (4-5 times now)", was speculative in nature and Apple therefore has removed it from Apple Discussions.
We hope that you enjoy your Apple purchases and we encourage you to keep Apple Discussions in mind if you have questions regarding any Apple product.
Kind Regards,
Apple Discussions Staff

They really have a big problem here and they are NOT ADMITTING IT or addressing their user base to fix it. - GreenAlien, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Anyone know how to contact Ars Technica about this? Their contact form throws up an internal server error.
- brunodelfrate, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1A bug that can make your iPhone instantly useless (you need a full restore from iTunes to get it back, losing everything you have on the phone!). No comments from Apple until now. Happened to me too. And strangely enough, I haven't seen any website writing about it...
- brunodelfrate, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1BTW, the title should be "White Apple logo screen of death" or "Black screen of death"... :-)
- aketarak, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0Sounds like Apple is not for you DwindleFlip. You should move on. I'm sure you'll find better technology somewhere else!
- jawdropper, on 08/12/2008, -0/+0I too have this problem, Restored 3 times, interrupted it with USB plug in and out 6 times. I don't alter apps now as this is what kills the phone.
- borisbair, on 08/06/2009, -0/+0Very serious article, this problem really global.
