iPhone Weekend One: 700,000 Sold, $200million+ Profit For Apple
techcrunch.com — "After speculation earlier in the week that Apple had sold between 400-500,000 iPhones, the actual sales figures for the iPhone have been released and they are even wilder than the speculated figures: Apple and AT&T moved 700,000 iPhones to the close of business Sunday."

FTA: Update: corrected reference to figures. The 700,000 figure may be another analyst figure according to a comment, although other places are reporting the 700,000 as the actual figure.- PasteEater, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@ epyon180 (Below. Sorry, but there is no reply button for his post)
It's interesting that you keep pressing this point. Why would I say that? Because you posted almost the exact same comment in this thread:

If you can't say something original, say the same thing louder, eh?
EDIT: Damn! Posted in the wrong place. Sorry. Seriously, ***** this new system...- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"Sorry, but there is no reply button for his post"
It's there, you just have to play a little game to find it. I have adapted two methods:
* Scroll down, following the thin blue line just below and slightly indented from his post until you see his name again. FUN!
* Search for his name using your browsers find function. - epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why would I reword it when that is exactly what I want to say. Tell you what, I will change some words around next time to be "original".

- epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -15/+63You know I had a first generation hard drive creative mp3 player that did everything that the ipod did but I wonder why I never use it. I remember.... because it SUCKS. Many phones that are older than the iPhone can do everything that the iphone can ( Nokia N95- Mp3 player, 5 MP camera, Wi-Fi, etc). But thats not the point; the point is that the iphone has a great UI and it just works, I don't care how much you hate apple but you have to be stupid and ignorant to think that cell phone software is great right now. I am sick of comments on digg every-time a iphone story comes up saying something like "My _______ phone already does all that and it's ___$ cheaper than the iphone" . Thats the same argument people try to make saying that iPods don't have things like FM tuners etc, those arguments don't work because people that buy iPods don't buy it because of extra features, they buy it because it is easy to use and syncs up very nicely with itunes, Thats exactly how the iphone works.
- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -15/+7"But thats not the point; the point is that the iphone has a great UI and it just works"
Except for the sheer number of cases where it doesn't work. The Engadget review of the iPhone was full of headaches over boneheaded errors and missing options. - dima1109, on 10/11/2007, -17/+6People buy it because they are ignorant. People buy ipods because they are too dumb to figure anything out. People buy ipods because they like to look cool. Ipods, macs, macbooks, and now iphones, are overall inferior products to most substitutes. The reason people buy them is the same reason people buy american eagle instead of a generic mervyn's brand, or true religion instead or levi's. People who want their electronics to offer them close to everything they'll ever want from this particular device, and people that are smart with their money will never buy anything Apple.
I'm not saying apple products are bad. I'm saying for every single apple product there is a better one on the market right now. Every. Single. One. This is exactly the reason 99% of apple's business and sales is in the United States.
It will sound cliche, but it's true regarding everything apple does. The two main selling points for any given apple product are design and carefully targeted advertisement. The design is very good. But the audience is what sells it the best. Apple targets the best and the brightest. I'm not talking about celebrities. I'm talking about the flashy and classy girl that works the front desk in your office. Or the cool kid from your history class. People everyone subconsciously looks up to. As long as apple has them, their sales will be huge.
From technological standpoint, apple products are below average. The cpus in macs and macbooks will become outdated in a year or so. None of the ipods has ever raised the standard of sound quality or battery life. Iphone has so many flaws that it cannot be perceived as anything other that a cultural trend that will go away in a few weeks. And dont even start me on software updates. Buying a device because of some function that may or may not be implemented later is just foolish for anyone that knows the value of money.
Apple has had its signature simplicity all along. One-button mice, touchscreen with no buttons, master synchronization software. Its all good. But show me a person that has never used a computer before. Simplicity will always give way to functionality, and that is why the community is bashing apple. They sacrifice functionality and flexibility for simplicity and ease of use. I don't know about you, but if i ever bought anything apple, I would feel ashamed of myself for buying a mediocre product designed for the inept and lazy.
Apple is just as american as the pickup truck. We are the only country that buys trucks for everyday use. We are the only country that buys apple products.- sambryce, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2"I don't know about you, but if i ever bought anything apple, I would feel ashamed of myself for buying a mediocre product.."
so you have never bought an apple product? you should try it. - MadKennyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good luck with that. I'll look for you sitting on the corner outside Starbucks with your 7-11 coffee, eMachines laptop, Dell Pocket DJ and Mervyn's jeans.
- sambryce, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2"I don't know about you, but if i ever bought anything apple, I would feel ashamed of myself for buying a mediocre product.."
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8The shiny UI gets tiring really fast when you can't do simple tasks like sending a text messages to more than one person at a time.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Something I've done...oh....never! I have a Windows smartphone and when I got it I sent text messages to my wife a few times then realized it wasn't worth the effort or money. I'd rather talk to her anyway. Some of us don't care about sending text messages to one person, let alone multiple people.
- natenovs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2i do it all the time. and i have a motorola v180 taht came free with my 1 year contract.
just because you dont do it, doesn't mean someone else doesn't- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"just because you dont do it, doesn't mean someone else doesn't"
That was exactly my point. Some people need feature x and some people don't. The ones that don't might buy the iPhone and that doesn't make them stupid. It's the best media phone right now, bar none. Big screen, 8GB memory, iTunes integration. Other phones, even ones from Sony, are lacking in this arena. - over9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Like I said it depends on the target demographic and iphone's users would definitely want that feature as seen by various complaints in apple/iphone forums.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"just because you dont do it, doesn't mean someone else doesn't"
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Well, sending a message to multiple message is very popular among school and university students. Like for example, I sent a message announcing my university final results to quite a lot of people. And what about
Party at my house, bring beer.
Party at my house, bring beer.
Party at my house, bring beer.
Just because you don't use it doesn't mean the majority won't. In fact it is exactly what the iPhone's target demographic would use. - pvdnyc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2agreed. there are features that should be on the iPhone. I really think that Apple will upgrade the software to make such features available. Hell, they are probably reading these comments to see what people would like to see on the next software release.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2@pvdnyc: Do you really think Apple will give away free software releases for new features? They will just make everyone buy a new iphone.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1FYI, there's a reply link right under his post.
- moofer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5yes, I really think they will offer software updates, you worthless choad. Have you ever seen how many OS updates have been released without forcing the purchase of a new computer? Have you seen how many code updates for iPods have come out that didn't force the purchase of a new iPod? The brilliance of the iPhone is that everything is controlled by software, and therefore changeable/upgradable at any moment through a software update. You're such an ignorant stain.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@moofer: Just think about what you said. Does that make business sense. Will apple just keep giving away features for the iPhone forever? At the least they will be charging users a small fee for it. The updates for the OS and iPod were just bug fixes. In this case we are talking about NEW features for the iPhone.
- apotropaic, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3I think maybe you're missing the point... iTunes sucks. iTunes music store and apples drm sucks. I won't ever use an iPod until I can't drag and drop music from my file manger onto. No checks for what songs I'm transferring, JUST DO IT! See this is the problem that many companies have. Apple sells music so they worry about DRM stuff. But I do like iPod hardware, just can't stand the fact that I'd have to put up with the software.

it's amazing how apple didn't think of stuff like mass deletion of emails.- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Email is the weakest app (though it still works well for what it does), but a lot of things have workarounds - for MMS you can use a cell phone email address from the provider to send the user an MMS with a picture, for example.

That's not how it works. iPod is a mp3 player and it does what it says on the tin. iPhone is a phone however it lags behind other phones when it comes to usability. - over9, on 10/11/2007, -12/+8It's probably around 300,000. Apple always tends to hype things up.
- moofer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Apple hypes things up?! They most-often don't say *****. Please tell me where they've announced any sales figures with regards to the iPhone. I'll save you the trouble. They haven't. It's the arm-chair quarterbacks that pull figures out of thin air (just like you pulled your figure of 300,000 out of your ass), and publish them in hopes of getting readership. Apple hasn't said *****, and therefore haven't hyped anything up.
- jabberwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yes, letting people say they MAY have sold 300-400 and then having Apple magazine analysts speculate around 700,000 is hyping.
Its hyping because it allows people like us to debate what the figures are = discussion=speculation=hype.
And most definitely HYPE because they HAVE the actual figures!!!
- jabberwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yes, letting people say they MAY have sold 300-400 and then having Apple magazine analysts speculate around 700,000 is hyping.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Sure Apple haven't said ***** (officially), but that's how hype works. It's all behind the scenes.
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, bro, they don't usually release actual numbers this early in their forays, and if they even bother telling you something sales-related it's usually backed up with stats, market position, or something that lets us extrapolate a fairly accurate number. I think it's you that's making things up.

- over9, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4You can't attach more than one picture in an email. How stupid is that?
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4I love how the mac fanboys defend the iPhone by saying "Oh it's only version 1, they will include the features via software updates"
First of all, that is NOT an excuse. Where has apple been all this time and what has it been doing? Unlike the music player industry when iPod first came out, the cell phone market is very mature. Various companies have set high standards. How can apple leave out stuff that everyone including Steve Jobs take for granted is incredible. Examples include mass deletion of emails and sending a text message to multiple recipients in one go.
Second of all, does it make business sense for apple to release all these new features for free? No, it doesn't. Apple has a history of making loyal fanboys buy new versions for tiny improvements in features. Sure they will release free bug fixes. But fixing the huge list of feature omissions? That's for iPhone v2.
And third of all, by that time, the competitors will have released even superior products.- s0ny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3First off, anyone who doesnt think Apple will release free software updates for the iPhone is stupid. First, they changed the AppleTV and iPhone to be factored in a subscription based way for their earnings. So you buy an iPhone now for 600$ but that money gets spread out over 24 months since they are going to put in time and money to keep progressing the current iPhone. Secondly, they make a percentage of AT&T's monthly charges. So there is a vested interested in keeping the customer happy with their iPhone and its Data plan for the full 24 months. Apple has always delivered free updates for all software they make, and the only radical things you will need to purchase an iPhone v2 for is GPS capabilities, and 3G.
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"And third of all, by that time, the competitors will have released even superior products."
...Just like all those 'iPod' killers that have come out since the iPod? Maybe the competitors you talk about will release 'superior' versions of their OWN products, but Apple is a moving target these days, hard to hit. The iPhone is a good product. FYI, I lived with my original 5gig iPod for a long time, until I replaced it with a 30gig black 'video' model. And it received several downloadable updates in it's lifetime, including scrubbing through songs, calander/address book/clock functionality, and of course, support and compatibility with the iTunes music store that launched much later. Apple will update some of the niggling little problems and make the iPhone even better. It's just the way they do it.

- nlschd, on 10/11/2007, -17/+14Although people are all about bombing on Apple, realistically, most smart phones have a very large margin such as this (although perhaps not quite as much. TWing for Example costs 350 dollars with a one year contract but costs about 130 dollars to produce). Also, prices will fall once iPhone clones come up on the market.
Apple's monopolistic relationship with AT@T is worth much more criticism than Apple's pricing.- r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5"Apple's monopolistic relationship with AT@T is worth much more criticism than Apple's pricing."
The relationship was a business choice, not a monopolistic one. Exclusive by definition has to be a monopoly, otherwhise it isn't much of an exclusive is it? Some people are so retarded.
- r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5"Apple's monopolistic relationship with AT@T is worth much more criticism than Apple's pricing."
- amrush4th, on 10/11/2007, -14/+10 Wait for the returns to count the numbers. I was just in an AT&T store and someone had to return it because they don't get reception at their house. I have AT&T (not an iPhone) and the reception only works sometimes in my house also. If i did not have the phone for free I would switch back to verizon.
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5And your specific situation is relevant how? "I have AT&T (not an iPhone) and the reception only works sometimes in my house"
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So, will they let you out of the contract if you don't have reception at your house?
- normalkid, on 10/11/2007, -14/+22This is inaccurate. more analyst numbers.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/11/2007, -7/+86How did you come up with that 200+ million number? I realize the iPhone has huge margins, but profit does not equal units sold x percent margin x price. Apple has invested years and millions of dollars into this phone. They have not turned a profit in five days.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Figuring a 50% margin ($250-300 profit per unit), 700,000 units is $175M - $210M... not too shabby... That goes a ways towards paying back for the R&D.
- ccrook, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'd assume taking their overall profit margin (just under 15%) and doubling it (new products are generally higher priced) is more accurate. I'm going to bet the profit on this weekend is ~$125M
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6R&D, etc is usually G&A or overhead, but you are right, it would be more proper to refer to it a gross profit, and before taxes at that.
- scotty1024, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The article also doesn't state any ratio for 4GB vs 8GB nor allowance for 14 day returns nor for DOA's and the one unit that was replaced by Apple where the owner accidentally slammed it into the corner of a table.
Amateur with Digg insider buddies to pump it up. As if we didn't have enough iPhone hype already. - TheToecutter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Because most people on Digg don't understand that profit is more than just (sale price - BOM price) x units. The same lametards use this method to show how Blizzard is making $127 million a month (8.5 million x $15). It's junior high accounting.
- digitalunit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1well.. they are making that much... not in profit but they do make that much =/

What bugs me is that unlike Ubuntu release schedules or Ron Paul developments, there hasn't been anything *new* about the iPhone since last Friday, and there won't be for a while. After all these stories I know more about the iPhone thing than I do about my current phone.
Submit a story when a software update or new version is announced. Otherwise, please try to keep it to yourself.

- naio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Me either. All this astroturfing is having the opposite effect.
- ausfahrt, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10So this means almost 50% profit per iPhone. I dunno sounds a little messed ...
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3the thing about $250 cost of the iPhone is *****. it's a poorly done estimate on some of the key components. it doesn't include the manufacturing costs, or all the manufacturing planning it took to make the thing that compact..... let alone any of the R&D work on hardware or software, then testing then everything else.
i dare anyone to make their own iPhone for $250... or even $400. good ***** luck.
people paid $500 for the first RAZR phones a few years ago. compare the two and see what you get for your money. even compared to other smartphones it's valid. it does have 30x (or 60x) the storage space of many other smartphones.
no, i do not have an iPhone, and i don't plan on buying one, but i have played with one. you have to hold it to appreciate how small it is. you have to try it to appreciate how well designed the UI is. it's pretty awesome. you have to watch movie trailers to appreciate how good the screen looks. if you are happy with a $35 phone, then stick to it, but this is a totally different beast.

- archer75, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5I'm surprised it's so high for an over priced phone lacking in many features that other basic smart phones have.

- outbreakofevil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why is angstybagels getting dugg down? He's absolutely correct. Anyone who drops $500 on a cell phone needs to spend their money a lot better.

- Malarie, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Even if there was a sweet mouth and nice and wet tongue (lets say Jessica Biels) on my phone to insert my d*c in, i would not pay 600$. You morons are getting pwned by apple and your are asking for more..
- Aleks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2It was such a simple process to setup and I virtually had to do zero work to get my phone up and running. ZERO LAG AS WELL.

- Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2didn't they produce 3 million of these for the "massive demand?"
the sad part for apple is that the initial infatuation with the iPhone is over, and almost everyone that would have bought one has already bought one. Look for some massive price drops soon.- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now there are 700,000 demo units out in the wild. Everywhere I go people go mental when they see my iPhone. In 3-years time Apple will be one of the top 3 cell phone manufacturers, count on it.
- Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2didn't they produce 3 million of these for the "massive demand?"
- brycelb, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29Who gives a damn what the profits are after 5 days, 700,000 units (if that holds up) is absolutely insane. This has to be the most successful mobile phone launch to date. People get into Jobs for many different reasons but he has brought Apple back to life in a big way, he did the same for Disney's entertainment products, and now AT&T may be kissing his ass all the way to the bank.
- mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That's huge numbers for something that everybody already has. That's bigger than PS3, nearly as big as the first month of Wii shipments. And Apple has MORE on the way to sell.
I think people are so used to manufacturing problems that cause companies to do paper launches and spin the shortage in to marketing hype, they don't get it when a company executes and delivers the product, nearly on time, in sufficient quantity. The last half dozen big tech products have been awful. I think Apple is again changing the game back to Business and not the hype about what they're going to do or how much they're going to make.

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14These are not Apple or AT&T reported sales figures, just another report of another analyst's estimates.

- SirZRX, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2they could make a bigger profit with unlocked iphones IMO, i live in mexico and i spected to buy 2 iphones in my next trip, but is not gonna happen thx to ATT&T
- mabhatter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But they need locked phones to run the service. Certain features of the service are Apple developed server hardware. They need contracts to put that into place and also to maintain the quality of the service.
- banton, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1There are Smart Phones, and then there are _smart_ phones.
- garryw, on 10/11/2007, -12/+6Wow more rumors. Unfortunately they did poorly. Look at the stock price on monday, it dropped. It dropped on iPhone Monday. They've sold about 400K-500K units. They expected to sell much more.
- cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4stop smoking crack, is bad for you. The estimates on friday morning before the launch, hovered around 200,000. You are obviously not familiar with the stock market, stop pretending. Traders buy ahead of the news not after it happens (buy on rumor, sell on news) and the fact that it remain relatively flat on monday only underlines the upside surprise in the number of sales. Look again what the stock did on tuesday, (which is one of the slowest trading days of the year) it reached an all time high. So wipe your mouth because you have BS all around it. Is okay if you hate Apple and you might think the iPhone is the worst gimmick since the pet rock, but seriously spinning facts is so lame.
- Aleks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Well said.
- torifile, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3And look at what it did Tuesday when this stuff was announced. Up $6/share. Hmm. Down $.50 on Monday only to bounce up $6 the following day. Yeah. That's awful.

- kelsosmythe, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Meh.
That is all. - mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -10/+10The euphoria is peaking, AT&T and their slow Internet will bring reality real soon. Apples decision to go with a inferior network could end up ugly.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's not at all slow when on WiFi. And EDGE is fine for light browsing, or for using Google Maps (which is the main use for it for me on the go).
It's so nice to use, even when it's on the slower EDGE it's still better than anything else for browsing.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's not at all slow when on WiFi. And EDGE is fine for light browsing, or for using Google Maps (which is the main use for it for me on the go).

- zadadka, on 10/11/2007, -13/+13If Rolls Royce, with great fanfare, produced a new car but using 5-year old technology, would that sell like hot cakes too?
"A fool and his money are easily parted".- mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Or a Maserati with a AM radio.

The iPhone is by far the best phone available at the moment, and you have to admit it.- zadadka, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1uh......pfffft !
- davdav, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Great phone, but not the best available at the moment. Sorry.
- torifile, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4What 5 year old tech are you talking about? The multi-touch screen? OS X? Native PDF rendering of all UI elements for seamless zooming? The iPod tech in there? Google Maps? My cell from 2002 surely had all that and more.
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You might want to use one before you make that analogy. The activation process alone (mine took 7 minutes through iTunes, at home) is evolution in a stiff industry that is already being changed by Apple stepping in.
- frogpelt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12At $50/month x 24 months, AT&T will gross about $850,000,000 out of this deal.
And that's just off the first weekend's sales. - MaXPL, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5i'll stay with my 100 dollar phone with great connection from verizon.

- mattmollysdad, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5 I like gadgets that work and Apple makes things that look great, work... and are affordable. I wish them success and as much profit as they can get... that's what capitalism is about.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Did you know that the iPhone doesn't allow you to send a text message to more than one person at a time?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes, you told us already in this same thread. Repeat yourself much?
- jonahan52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There's a new invention.. and it comes included on the iPhone .. it's called ... e-mail... it's pretty neat lets you send a message to multiple people..
- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -3/+52,300,000 iPhones left!
The original story of the first run of iPhones reported 3,000,000 manufactured.
It will take time to sell them all, but the Apple store is now selling them,
so the safe bet is to order directly from Apple or pick it up in the Retail Store.
There is No real reason to buy from eBay, uBid, or any other web site.
You have no idea if the it is real, if even with photos.
There is no shortage of iPhones.
Protect your accounts and stick with buying your iPhones directly from Apple.- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well from the looks of it, you can bid on tens of thousands of them at discount prices on ebay. Oddly there are a lot that are from open boxes as well. WTF? Who goes out buys a iPhone opens the box plays with it, then sells it on EBay less than a week after acquiring it?

- TheToecutter, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2***** Digg headline. Even a monkey banging on a calculator for 5 seconds reach the same conclusion. "$200 million profit"? *****, not even $200 million EARNINGS. Whatever man.

- integlspwr, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Did you guys know that this is firmware 1.0? damn give it some time and all those things everyone is bitching about will be addressed.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I bet you some of the glaring bugs are fixed in software updates, but the huge omission of features will be fixed in the next iPhone.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3The firmware 1.0 excuse is running thin. The cell phone market is very mature and other companies have set high standards. What has apple been doing all this time? iPhone is missing vital features that everyone including steve jobs takes for granted. How he could leave them out of the iphone when they should have been planned from the start is incredible.
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Trolling enough? Go take a walk, c'mon back and post for the FIFTH time. Maybe you can mention the battery that isn't removable.
