- hsinray, on 09/01/2008, -10/+45Wow! iphone is going mainstream? if it can beat linux, it would be amazing! Now, apple, can you just fix your crashing mobile web browser you call Safari. Come' on, make it stop crashing all the time! I am not even asking for Flash
- batmanz, on 09/01/2008, -11/+38ASTOUNDING!!!!!!
- poploserdigg, on 09/02/2008, -3/+27that's almost as low as the % of Digg'ers who can have sex with a woman without paying for it.
- plbland, on 09/02/2008, -6/+28Its a lot of people, and it's a phone
- Klowner, on 09/02/2008, -0/+21I had a boss that called them CPUs constantly, drove me nuts, like CPU was an abbreviation for "computer" or something
- 5hocker, on 09/01/2008, -7/+25I notice incredible spikes on the weekends...looks like people are using iPhones for fun, not work
- Tenlow, on 09/02/2008, -0/+17I think that's a holdover from the previous generation.
One older guy in the office called the computer the 'modem' and the monitor the 'cpu'. Those were some fun service calls. - inactive, on 09/01/2008, -4/+19The same reason that people still major in Sociology: BECAUSE THEY CAN.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+13sometimes it's quicker for me to look at an app on my phone than it is to pull up a bookmark and dig for the info on the site – movie times, weather, stocks – the iphone is good for quick glances.
- spaceshipsix, on 09/02/2008, -0/+13I do all my work on a stand alone CPU. I use a AA battery and touch the contacts to different pins on the CPU. Takes forever to do anything but it's a lot cheaper than buying all the other equipment.
- skidooer, on 09/02/2008, -0/+13If you're going to digg during class, why not just stay home and use your computer?
- MyNameIsJoe, on 09/02/2008, -8/+20Yeah, for one day. Buried as inacurate. The average for the month was only about .3%, which is still impressive, but it's not .48%.
- handheldchimp, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Last time I checked, iPhones are actually bigger then CPUs
- dizzy113, on 09/02/2008, -1/+112.1 this month (I'm guessing towards the end of the month) should fix a lot of things and add new features. Let's hope they get it right with this fix.
- MxM111, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10In just about one year it got HALF the number of the Linux web use. I see as quite probable beating Linux web use in about 1 year.
- TeraRealm256, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8workplaces have web filters that filter things out....it would be useful to check your facebook or twitter at work if your corporation you work for has blocked access to the sites
- toxicityj, on 09/02/2008, -14/+22why is a fraction of a percent being reported, and furthermore why is it on the frontpage of Digg?
- fLUx1337, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8ComPUter? lol
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -3/+11That CNN doesn't know how to change the Wordpress favicon? Yes, it is.
- serif69, on 09/02/2008, -3/+10They don't appear because they don't rank.
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7I've been using mine to keep tabs on work during the weekend. I work in IT and I'm on-call one week out of 5. It's a lot easier carrying an iPhone around then an entire laptop.
- dsendecki, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7I caved and bought a 3G. Now I use it for work more than my blackberry. Navigation on PDF documents (I read a lot of research that way) is awesome. And I actually browse the web with it. I owned a Nokia e62i before this, and there's no comparison.
- se7en11, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7FYI: I just looked at the stats for one of my more popular sites, and from Aug 1st to today. The iPhone and iPod touch account for around .51% of the total visitors (53,000). Which works out to around 270 total.
- imightbewrong, on 09/02/2008, -1/+71/200 is pretty impressive
- AssShanks, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT !!!!!!!
- drlha, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6I think that's a flawed conclusion. If people are using their iPhones for work, its most likely that they are going to be surfing to their work's internal website. I doubt many businesses give out usage statistics for their internal websites, often accessed through VPN, so they wouldn't be included in this figure. The correct conclusion is that people are using their iPhones for recreational web surfing more on the weekends, not that people aren't using them for work.
- reverland, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6The reason people would surf on the phone if there is a PC in front of them because they may be at work and are not allowed to visit personal sites.
- Zippo, on 09/02/2008, -2/+8Because when you're at Grandma's, there's no PC or WiFi for your laptop... but there is an EDGE or 3G signal.
- Zippo, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6I live in Newfoundland, a province in Canada... and we have some of the ***** Rogers service in the country, at least compared to other provinces. And I have no trouble getting signal 99% of the time.
These signal issues are not an iPhone-specific issue. It's AT&T. - freeborn, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5The title does not say the average was .48%, it says it "hit .48%" ;)
- SecureXeC, on 09/02/2008, -2/+7Because 15 yr olds have to stay current on their MySpace issues, even when they're out at the mall spending daddy's money. Duh.
- iericg, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I'll admit it... I'm too lazy to get off my couch and walk over to the desk. Plus I want to do my part in the battle for global warming and stay "cool" :p
- LuckyKarma, on 09/02/2008, -2/+7It's only going up from here with college classes starting. Digg during class FTW.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -5/+9a cell phone taking a fraction of a percent of the browser market is a huge deal
- BobakN, on 09/01/2008, -9/+13Perhaps, but a lot of people work in offices. Sure, the iPhone is great for mobile web browsing, but why would you use a 480x320 screen when you're sitting in front of a full-size CPU?
- handheldchimp, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Almost...
- reKONG, on 09/02/2008, -5/+9This is kinda irrelevant seing as other smart phones dont appear on it.
- lnxfi, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4I'll have a burger and fries please.
- spaceshipsix, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4person = porn?
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4I had the crashing Safari problem when the phone was new but I can't remember the last time it has and I use it daily.
- TechCF, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3That depends on the ISP. Pretty much 1mbit all over the place here. When on edge I have 75kbit. Telenor Mobil Norway :)
No problem watching youtube in the car or on the train. - valentine83, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3therefore, pornal sites?
- astrobela, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4...or your comment on the comment on the comment on the comment on the comment?
- JackpotCity, on 09/02/2008, -2/+5lol, it was just a matter of time.
Sometimes I have a good laugh when checking the logs - there are people surfing our casino sites on Nintendo Wii even. - flickr, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3Sorry for being a git, enjoy your new iPhone!
- etruscan, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4Well, it's more or less just an interesting point of fact. Mobile browsing of the internet has been MUCH lower than that prior to the iPhone. That half of a percent of web browsing is accounted for by a phone - that's pretty impressive. What's Firefox at... 20%?
- kibbledbits, on 09/02/2008, -2/+5This is comparing the iPhone to the saturation of PCs, a half a percent is astounding. Basically if you compare it to all the computers browsing the internet (not just recently bought). You are comparing many of these devices against deep saturation of 5+ year old PCs, so this is impressive.
- alex361, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Oh snap!
- peterinjapan, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3You may be mistaken. I find I do a huge number of things with the web, and since the iPhone is about 75-85% of Wifi speed in 3G mode, it's easy to grab it and find something I need. I used to keep an Asus EEE PC around the living room for casual web surfing and I realized that the iPhone is actually more usable and easier to type on, I gave it to my college-bound newphew. The amazing apps that come along every week help keep it useful.
