- Tobark, on 10/10/2007, -8/+63Because people go "Jesus, you paid that much for a phone?"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+60Call me when someone Unlocks the price.
- Crusah, on 10/10/2007, -7/+21All this unlocking stuff is well and good but the iPhone is a game changing cell phone not only in terms of how it works but how its activated and synced. Since that's done through iTunes, a completely unlocked iPhone would have to bypass the entire sync-communicate with Apple-update-upload process. IPhone software fixes and improvements and new features are loaded to the phone when its plugged into the internet through iTunes. So I would think if you did manage to bypass AT&T the first time you plug it in to put music or anything on the folks at Apple would know what your phone isn't legit. So a full workaround has to be in place before the device would truly be unlocked.
Just my 2 cents - unfinity, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Surprisingly, there's a few people in the world who don't live in the United States.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Why do you think you could not sync and do everything else you do today with a locked phone? Activation is only one small part of the process, once iTunes thinks a phone is activated it doesn't care anymore in terms of synching. That's how people use it today with no service at all.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Obviously you haven't used the 'visual voicemail' system... Yes, it would be easy to live without it, but it's also really cool - it's more like an e-mail inbox than anything else, and it downloads the audio files into your phone, allowing you to listen to downloaded messages any time, including when you're "off the grid," like in an airplane or in an area without coverage. If you consider things like listening to messages from people you like/priority messages first, being able to quickly rewind or place yourself right where you want in the audio file with a scrub tool like a quicktime movie "gimmicky" then I don't know how you can stand things like DVRs and GPS in the car... It's just more cool ways to utilize the technology around us.
- brodsky13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm an AT&T customer, so let me answer that. AT&T's coverage is incredibly poor. I used to use Verizon and my phone worked frickin everywhere. I switched to AT&T and now when I'm driving down the interstate, my phone is essentially inoperable, going into dead zones every 5 minutes. In smaller towns my phone doesn't work at all. Why did I switch from Verizon? I couldn't use my Verizon phone with European SIM cards (which is important to me) all the cool features of the phone were locked out (i.e. the same phone from Verizon wouldn't let me use my car's built in bluetooth functionality), and their customer service was really bad.
- theokandroid, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12Really again? I thought we were over this.
- ikzeidegek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Jesus would probably own a $10 Walmart cordless phone, to call the disciples and his mom once in a while, even though his carpentry business suffered a bit from lacking a cellphone
- cabman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7If you're gonna spend that much on a phone, why not just switch to AT&T?
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I know. I heard about those guys up in Canada.
- roland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2like digg?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5"doesn't for example the visual voice mail require some specific changes of how the voice mail is handled by the carrier?"
Yes, but who cares? That random-order voicemail is just a gimmick anyway. Think about it: How many times do you not listen to all your voicemail anyway? Listen to it and clear it out. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Unless you're with Telia, I wouldn't recommend it -- it's going to be slow as molasses.
- Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Because some of us don't like AT&T due to the fact that they're lying, overpriced, spying asstards. The iphone itself isn't all that horrible, but the service it's tied to is.
- meshman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's in reference to the rabid hype Jobs made about it and the mass fanboy masturbation session that followed.
- firsttube, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Give it twelve months something better and far superior will be on the market."
You can say that again! I'm sure it'll also be called 'iPhone'. - Fasta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Still harping on about price... I really cannot understand why this has never been knocked on the head... My last cell phone purchase - 1020 Euro. Nokia E90. Now how is that different from the iPhone in terms of pricing?
- FiftyPoints, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who are you comparing them to? Your description seems to apply to all TelCos
- signal15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Even though they don't use SIM cards, their phones are still locked. And with the way CDMA phones are locked, they are more of a pain to take to another provider.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11) Not releasing worldwide gives Apple a lot more leverage when talking to other carriers abroad.
2) As Apple themselves have said, the iPhone should offer slightly different features depending on region - so for areas that have a lot of 3G penetration, you'll see a 3G model of the iPhone. - webRat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Not sure why he was dugg down, but ... he's not talking out his ass here.
- hiro, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Using it makes you cross and it'll be a bloody miracle if it's ever as good as everbody else's smartphones
- ohyeahilovegirl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0In need of an iPhone, i got the software to unlock it all i need now is the Phone! Will pay $300-400 for a used iphone, prefer 8GB one
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3because 1, AT&T are pretty poor and 2. they're in europe and surprisingly America telephone and telegraph don't have service here
- thewebguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2i'd rather not give them any of my money
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Wow... dupespam :)
- ElianReser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0A novel is never anything, but a philosophy put into images.
- Hydroxyl, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6UGH.
I wish this would work for Sprint.
They don't use SIM cards at all, so this could never happen. - BraydenPeer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0When you row another person across the river, you get there yourself.
- CoolKoon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What device? A SIM/smartcard reader/writer? And a blank SIM card? What are you talking about?
- quickfix98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Messing with teh iPhone is a life mission for some folks...not really a fad for them!
http://iphone.corank.com - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Earth calling Mars. iPhone big deal; some people do not have a life. Give it twelve months something better and far superior will be on the market. Why not wait until they develop a microchip implant.
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Wow,, peple still messing with iPhone, I though that fad was over.
- thewebguy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3still waiting for someone to confirm this for t-mobile u.s.
- tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Dugg for JesusPhone. Awesome.
- rhatid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3maybe because this phone is supposed to be the 2nd coming of all cel-phones.
- rfocht, on 10/10/2007, -17/+15Why do they call it the Jesus Phone?
- molecool, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5NOW I may actually get the iPhone - no way I'm using AT&T :-)
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5Unlocked or not, this device still is an overpriced P.O.S.
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4The fact that Apple didn't release the iPhone worldwide in the first place is beyond the maximum stupidity that any human being can process. If this works with my carrier in Sweden, I can easily say that my Prada what's-its-name is going bye bye. Though, I'm still curious about if all the features still work even after having the phone unlocked. I mean doesn't for example the visual voice mail require some specific changes of how the voice mail is handled by the carrier?
- cbartlett, on 10/10/2007, -12/+7Dugg for JesusPhone.
- asskey, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Never going to happen.
Just get AT&T...it's better.
