- BoneStamp, on 07/10/2009, -2/+73$55??? They do realize that jail break tethering is free right? Good luck AT&T.
- greystar, on 07/10/2009, -1/+52Well if I wasn't convinced to jailbreak my iPhone before, $55 tethering will make me do it out of spite.
- MacParrot, on 07/10/2009, -1/+29AT & T is going to price themselve right out of having the iPhone for their network. WWDC made it pretty obvious that Apple is less than pleased with them, most likely thinking that their draconian rules are inhibiting iPhone sales. Apple doesn't need competition in enforcing draconian rules!
Kidding (mostly). Most of AT & T's new customers are coming from iPhone sales. Why do they seem so hell-bent on killing the golden calf? - uknowwhoibe, on 07/10/2009, -1/+26This will fail and will cause more dissent with AT&T.
- mv10, on 07/11/2009, -0/+20The information was posted to AT&T's Facebook page:
“There are a lot of reports out there, but wanted you guys to know that rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false. We’ll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch.”
[via The Loop] - winguero, on 07/10/2009, -2/+19Honestly, the price of the actual device doesn't seem like an inhibitor. It's the stupid plan AT&T makes you sign up for. It outcosts the machine in the first couple months...
- praha, on 07/11/2009, -1/+15If AT&T were a fast food joint, they would ask "Would you like anal beads with that?"
- beachtrader, on 07/11/2009, -0/+14Link?
- andrewortman, on 07/11/2009, -3/+14Must post.... the obligatory
***** AT&T - bizkit00, on 07/11/2009, -2/+111. Jailbreak here: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
2. Install, Cydia -> Featured Apps -> PdaNet
3. Connect to your computer via USB and download the software to your desktop/laptop: http://www.junefabrics.com/desktop/ - footbag01, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8I'll do it for all of my friends if it's $55.
- marcb83, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8maybe its 55 for the data package and tethering, that would make a lot more sense.
- jeffgtr, on 07/10/2009, -5/+11This has already been debunked.
- footbag01, on 07/11/2009, -3/+9AT&T if you charge $55mo, I will jail-brake my phone and everyone else's that I know.
- B1665r, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7For the very minimum of $90 a month that the iPhone costs, anything more than free is too much.
- joerod, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5you can tether without even jailbreaking the phone right now, i've been using it and the speeds are not worth $55
- Jrr6415sun, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Even $30 a month is a lot in my opinion
- robbh66, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6I don't know why you're getting dugg down- you're absolutely right.
I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T is delaying the role out to find ways to track people who are tethering without a contract.
With that said, for 55 bucks they can shove it. I'll continue to use jailbreak tethering and stick to light websurfing. - dagamer34, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5In otherwords, because of the ***** from the price leaking early, they are working on a way to cover their asses.
- threenuns, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4They can't detect it if u set up a VPN connection with your iPhone. Then all traffic is tunneled anyway and they only see that you did some stuff on the internet, but not what.
My University provides us with free VPN access to their network. Otherwise you can also set up a VPN in most routers and tunnel your iPhone traffic over your cable/dsl at home.
I do this because I use Skype on my jailbroken iPhone and I am sure t-mobile is sniffing my internet traffic!
Also, you do not need to jailbreak your iPhone for tethering and VPN. You can just load AT&T provider settings from www.benm.at that enable MMS and tethering right away WITHOUT jailbreaking! - Terminaltor, on 07/11/2009, -3/+7abilty to use your phone as a modem to connect your computer to the internets (wifi, bluetooth, or usb)
- Blizaine, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4you don't need to JB to tether with 3.0. Just a load a config file via mobile safari. Takes like 3 seconds.
- Buckwyld, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4That seems kind of steep.
- gcnaddict, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4A blackberry data plan with T-Mobile costs me 20 dollars a month, and I can tether it for free. Seems Apple's kids are going to be shelling out a lot of spare change just to get the same privs I've been getting for two years.
I mean, you guys could jailbreak it, but I somehow think AT&T will have a means of detecting jailbroken tethering pathways. I wonder if Apple's asking for a cut of tethering payments as well, thus justifying AT&T's high price? - ralphthemagi, on 07/11/2009, -6/+9Free, but against the ToS.
This is big telco we are talking about. Don't be surprised if they just start banning people who use tethering w/o paying for it (based on bandwidth usage) and then start charging people early termination fees. - Kazaki, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3772/linkk.jpg
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4Because the numbers for Q3 2009 are more important than the numbers for Q3 2011. Unfortunately, businesses like ATT operate in 90 day increments.
- JuanBSU, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Can I Super Size it?
- DCstewieG, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Exactly. I don't why anyone would get the 3G for $99 over the 3GS for $199...what's 100 bucks when you're paying all that every month?! That's why I don't have one, perfectly happy to pay $20/month for a plain ol' phone in a family plan.
- winterorchid, on 07/11/2009, -3/+6http://lmgtfy.com/?q=tethering
- phogasmic, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3Tethering should included, just set a bandwidth cap. ATT is so crap
- whatsthatsmell, on 07/11/2009, -3/+5***** you at&t
- lougoose, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2still obscenely priced.
- Hilyin, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Kind of? My Cable internet costs $49.99/for 20mbps connection
- Khast, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I use Fido in Canada. (Live in the US...but no US towers here.)
Anyways, I got the 6GB plan, and you could tether from day 1. (Of course going over the 6GB is going to cost an arm and a leg...)
Now...if they would only let Skype run on 3G without jailbreaking, I'd be set. - mrkmrk, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Downloading the configuration file is easier, I think.
- sam10685, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2They probably know Apple is going to bag them soon.
- likwidfuzion, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3Enable native tethering on 3.0 WITHOUT jailbreaking (3G and 3GS only): http://help.benm.at/help.php
You're welcome. - Kazaki, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Oh wow, I completely missed the thread this was supposed to go in... I'm surprised it's not buried right now.
- egthareal, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1You DON'T need to Jailbreak your phone to tether for free:
http://gizmodo.com/5301225/enable-tethering-on-you ...
Takes all of about 2minutes.
Used it in Vegas this past weekend and it worked flawlessly and insanely simple.
Just do this hack, then plug your iPhone into USB and you are golden. - dagamer34, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Don't even need to jailbreak. It's as simple as going to a website on your iPhone now!
- bshep, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Its probably true, the price is likely 54.99... but seriously its probably less than that if you already have an unlimited plan, thats my read of the quote. Specially this part:
"...rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false..."
If you dont have an unlimited data plan then who knows... - CaviMike, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Wow AT&T, you only give me more reasons to stick with T-Mobile. Gotta love ze germans.
- dieselstation, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2so we're paying for data plan and you want us to PAY AGAIN for data plan? WTF are you smoking AT&T
- leamanc, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2Trollbait article. The cost for AT&T tethering will be high...but we're talking $20-$30 high here, not $55.
Look at what they charge for similar packages on other smartphones. Expect, at most, a $5 premium for tethering on the iPhone. - crashingechelon, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1AT&T when will be reasonable? I probably have higher chances winning the lottery than having AT&T have a decent price structure.
- 07dcolem, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Be happy you don't live in a ***** town with no 3G at all.
- andypop481, on 07/11/2009, -2/+3I feel stupid asking this, but what does tethering mean here?
- jc1401, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Tethering the iphone in the UK with O2 costs an additional £15. So $55 seems a bit high.
- AnthonyC, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1I'm guessing they want to price it out of reach for most people other than folks whose businesses will cover the cost, its not like their network is already crippled as it is. Hell, they won't even allow MMS. Tethering will make their network even worse.
I'm counting down the days until the iPhone is off of AT&T. They are screwed the day that happens. -
