- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -3/+59If this is bound to happen each and every time Apple releases software updates, why is this news? Seems like yet another "No ***** Sherlock" moment.
The entire article.
"Apple has squeezed out the latest software update for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, v2.2.1. As always with Apple updates, the release notes are maddeningly sparse:
This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:
- Improved general stability of Safari
- Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll
- Fixed issue that caused some Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio files to skip during playback.
What Apple fails to mention is that the update break Yellosn0w, the hack which unlocks the iPhone from the official carrier and lets you slip in any SIM card. If you're a dirty, jailbreakin', unlockin' hacker, you're used to holding off updates anyway, and this time should be no different." - morphie, on 01/29/2009, -2/+34Well, what did you expect, added features like:
- Added support for cydia and installer packages.
- Unlock support for 3G subscriptions
- Support for boob-apps - Venemous, on 01/29/2009, -3/+16No ***** Sherlock
- Kanaka, on 01/29/2009, -1/+13Apple made this 'update' simply to disable Yellowsnow lets face it, and merely disguised it as an 'update' by tacking on TWO (OMG)...TWO ginormous bug fixes: Safari & Mail (Really?)
Might as well have called it iPhone Baseband update: This update 'fixes' the Yellowsnow unlocking tool - JshMRsn, on 01/29/2009, -0/+11The only reason I'd say this is noteworthy is that Apple sorta sprang the update on us this time. As developer, we've always received at least one beta before the update goes public. This gives the community a chance to realize an update is about to come out and lets jailbreakers know not to accept the next update.
This time the update and updated SDK was released out the blue. - noisymime, on 01/29/2009, -2/+11This is so predictable I'm surprised Apple don't list it in the changelog
- FrostyFire, on 01/28/2009, -5/+14^ You beat me too it.....is this really a big ***** surprise?
- ineptsavant, on 01/29/2009, -1/+10Aynone who unlocks or hacks their devices is well aware that whenever a new update comes out you wait for the community to test it. Then if it's no good you wait for a bit till someone cracks it. This is like saying "You are reading this article on the internet" No *****..
- incognit0, on 01/29/2009, -0/+8If this actually fixes all the Safari bugs, it would be a ginormous fix. As it stands now, I can't get through a day without it crashing at least 3 times. And if I could keep multiple tabs open without having to refresh them every time I switch tabs, that'd be super...
- paulsmith288, on 01/29/2009, -2/+9I think the surprise is that this update doesn't really do much - apart from break 3G unlock. Its an update aimed at stopping jailbreaking.
Apple are not playing nice these days - with the restructure of the iTunes db file and the legal threats - Im looking forward to replacing my iPhone with some a little more friendly. - ddfall, on 01/29/2009, -1/+7I think I speak for everyone when I say, we all expected this. If you want to unlock your 3g iPhone, you risk not being able to update it. It's a risk vs. reward choice.
- TypeEE, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6No deal for you, big freakin's deal for a lot of people, including me. I'll hold off my update until dev team tell me to do so.
- Izacus, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6Of course it doesn't break those. If you bought an unlocked iPhone it will stay unlocked forever, no matter the software update. You don't need software unlock for it however.
- rubaaan, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5really?!?! no wai!!!!!!!!
- techdever, on 01/29/2009, -3/+8sometimes i wonder why Digg has a 'Reply' button
- Heidenreich12, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5You can CURSE now without it autocorrecting I think! I actually spelt ***** wrong ,and it auto-corrected it for me. Wooooohoooo
- Alfyx, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5-Wide keyboard for Safari/text/email.
- phoomp, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5That's a surprise?
- phillymatt, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Wow. Relax?
I jailbroke my iPhone because I moved out of the country and had no choice if I wanted to continue using it. And while I expected the update to block yellowsn0w, I'm glad to get the official news that it does. Now I know not to update before backing everything up. - hungarianhc, on 01/29/2009, -1/+4I'm burying. I agree w/ the first poster. This isn't news. Every update breaks the previous unlock / jailbreak.
- cerealjynx, on 01/30/2009, -0/+3Duck yeah!!
- LiquidSpark, on 01/29/2009, -2/+5I wonder what would happen is MS started breaking compatibility for competing products with every update.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3I'd have swapped mine for a Palm Pre. But I think once the lawyers get involved... it will be delayed or not nearly as sweet as it should be.
- TheDude01, on 01/29/2009, -1/+3And why are you surprised?
- rimantas, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Then buy Palm Pre, what's the problem? Oh, I know the problem…
- imronburgundy83, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Work for Apple?
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2wat
- Marmot, on 01/29/2009, -1/+2What competing products is Apple breaking compatibility with?
Microsoft *does* have some history of this by the way... one of the more famous examples is the "AARD code" they used in the Windows 3.1 beta, to see if you were running genuine MS-DOS or a competitor's DOS product (e.g. DR-DOS). If you were running DR-DOS, you would get an ominous error message when starting the setup program for Windows -- "Non-fatal error detected - Error 4D53 - please call Windows 3.1 beta technical support". In fact, DR-DOS worked fine with Windows 3.1, but that sort of warning message would probably scare you away from a competitor's DOS (especially if your job was to manage hundreds of corporate desktops).
The test for MS-DOS vs. DR DOS looked at something completely inconsequential. The code itself was self-modifying, encrypted, and also attempted to disable debuggers. In other words, Microsoft went to some lengths to hide it...for some reason...
Check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARD_code - Myztry, on 01/29/2009, -2/+3It better not break legitimate iphone unlocks as that would make the device illegal in Australia where it is also sold.
- monkeyrun, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1lol wow ... really? I am surprised!
- phillymatt, on 01/29/2009, -2/+3It isn't news if it happens during every update. However, this is the first update since yellowsn0w was released. So yeah, it is news.
- LiquidSpark, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1They're breaking compatibility of all the "non Apple approved" apps in Cydia. I know MS has done this in the past. MS was raked over the coals for it.
- inactive, on 01/30/2009, -1/+2The update makes my iphone 1000% faster. Pages now load even before I hit browse. Emails come from two days in the future. I would pay thousands for this update if only Apple would ask me.
- cerealjynx, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Safari does have wide keyboard support.
Notes would be nice tho. - nogami, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1Well, it's not really a matter of not being able to update it. It's just not being able to update it until the new tool comes out that strips-off Apple's baseband firmware.
- kreatre2007, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1Would you like cheese with that whine? There's eBay you know! Sell the damned thing and get an iPhone that will work.
- peestandingup, on 01/29/2009, -2/+2Wow, I didn't see that one coming.
/s - kreatre2007, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1Nope. I used to. In fact, my first iPhone was a gift from Apple :) I'm an Apple consultant now.
- kreatre2007, on 01/30/2009, -1/+1So the hack team... I mean. . "dev team" tells you when you can update your iPhone? I thought Apple was the obsessive controlling company here. Interesting. What a loser!
- areyouserious, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1All your grammars are belong to us!
- fsuels, on 08/02/2009, -0/+0To unlock and jailbreak your iphone use this software. It worked for me in less than 6 minutes!
easyiphoneunlocker . us - jambla, on 01/29/2009, -3/+1damn it!
- kreatre2007, on 01/29/2009, -4/+1If your iPhone crashes that often, you don't have a Safari bug. You have a bigger problem. My iPhone experiences a crash maybe once a week. That's usually after using a lot of iPhone apps that came from the App Store. If I remember to power off and power back on often, that takes care of the crashing issue. Funny how doing a little thing like powering off and powering back on fixes a lot of things huh? A lot of people think that's just unacceptable and they can never be bothered to restore their phone because a lot of idiots never sync their iPhones with their computer so they don't have anything backed up.
- Spuy767, on 01/29/2009, -10/+7Indeed Let's bash Apple for trying not to be in breach of its contract with AT&T.
- kreatre2007, on 01/29/2009, -6/+1Of course they want to disable the stupid iPhone unlock schemes. Why wouldn't they?
- ronnyek, on 01/29/2009, -5/+0You know honestly, I've been an avid supporter of apple for a long time, with a number of macbook pro's and iphones, but I gotta say, I hold no loyalty. New feature releases are infrequent, and when they do come, its a buncha little nit-picky ***** nobody REALLY cares about (I am probably one of the few that could give a rats ass about copy paste).
Things like apples recent shenanigans really make me hope for nothing but the best for Palm etc. At least palm has implemented some of the features the iphone community has been demanding for quite some time, and if they aren't going to implement those ideas, why be mad when competitor does? - knowmonger, on 01/29/2009, -8/+3***** Apple !!
