- lolgamoff, on 03/07/2008, -0/+7This is such a stupid move, they could easily limit the amount of ram using some restrictive software or have a limitation to how much RAM a constantly-running app could use. IM, VoIP, and many other applications don't look nearly as attractive now.
- Shorties, on 03/07/2008, -1/+7God I hope apple makes a first party iChat program, if not they should give AOL special permission to run AIM as a background process.
- f3l1x, on 03/08/2008, -0/+4No, jailbreak+toolchain does not have this limitation; nor does it have any of the ones listed here. http://gonnected.blogspot.com/2008/03/iphone-sdk-5 ...
- Protoss, on 03/08/2008, -0/+4Then you would have people bitching over how their program can't function properly because its' RAM usage is restricted.
- jsheffield, on 03/07/2008, -4/+8That is only one of the many drawbacks of the SDK. The SDK is a major step forward, but let's hope competition doesn't let Apple keep their walled garden forever.
iPhone SDK: 5 Reasons to Love, 5 Reasons to Hate
http://gonnected.blogspot.com/2008/03/iphone-sdk-5 ... - kkiran, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3Well, they will definitely not allow resource crazy apps, but those such as AIM/VoIP (Skype)/GPS will be taken care of by carefully scrutinized providers like AOL/Skype/PosIm...
It makes sense to limit apps running in the background designed by anyone .. again Apple may allow users to request such a privilege which after being reviewed may be granted :) - neffy, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3It's software people, workarounds will be created. The AIM situation could be quite simple to do. Stored messaging, for example. You get all your IMs as soon as you reopen the app. Maybe you could even set it to text you when you receive an IM from a specific person or every 5 messages...etc.
- estvir, on 03/08/2008, -3/+6Than don't install a ton of apps yourself? You Apple apologists amaze me.
- luchid, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3SMS cost money, IMing over WiFi is free.
- matx, on 03/08/2008, -1/+4Apple may be limiting the phone to enhance the "User Experience" but this is really stupid. They just need to make sure all the real time tasks such as phoning and audio playing is run a higher priority as other tasks. With some effective memory swapping they could still achieve a good response time and let multiple applications run.
- f3l1x, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2Retarded way digg handles links sometimes....
corrected link from above: http://gonnected.blogspot.com/2008/03/iphone-sdk-5 ... - kee440, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1MobileScrobbler :'(
- DontEatTheFish, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1hmm you can still SMS for free with WIFI too.... there are free sites to let you do it
- robdiggity, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Does the homebrew SDK have this limitation?
- Shorties, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1I never said anything about the video conferencing functionality of iChat, just the other features.
- beerbarron, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I am sure in the future, they will open this up, they want to keep this as stable as possible, and gradually release bits and pieces...
- keeling0ver, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1If I installed an application that had these deleterious effects, I would simply be careful about using it or uninstall it. I wouldn't sit there and say "Curse you Apple for forcing me to install this app and make my phone unusable!!!" The free market of applications they set up would solve this... if a program caused problems, no one would use it and someone would write a better one.
- mrloco, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Launcher app anyone?
- highPhone, on 03/08/2008, -2/+1you're right, but SMS is PRACTICALLY free. Do you really need to send over 1000 text messages a month? Plus if you're not in a WiFi hotspot, your IM messages will travel over EDGE, thus costing you money anyway...
just a thought. IM is not for me tho.
-peace - brendanryder, on 03/08/2008, -2/+1you do know that the screen is on the front and the camera is on the back right?
- Braxo, on 03/08/2008, -3/+2Apple's architecture for their software is a bit different than say Windows. For example, in Windows, the operating system passes out the system resources for what it thinks is important. That is why on some window machines you may get your music player to skip while you use a photo editing program.
On Macs, the operating system doesn't determine the programs importance, program grab and return resources as they need them. That is why on Mac OS X you can have 40 programs open at once with no slow down.
As a novice developer, your application may suck so much resources in the background that the necessary functions of the iPhone may have difficulty running. This is Apple's way to protect it. - ploke, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1there goes twitterific for iphone
- thenome, on 03/08/2008, -4/+2All in all I think this is a good thing... I suffer from too much content being pushed in my face already :)
- highPhone, on 03/08/2008, -8/+1I'm wondering why you would need IM when you can just SMS somebody....
