iPhone SDK Beta 2 Now Available
gizmodo.com — Potential iPhone developers should go and grab the latest release of the SDK, beta 2, and revel in the new Interface Builder. Make your own fancy UIs for your iPhone game, or maybe just make an improved iFartz. We're cool with either.

- listrophy, on 03/28/2008, -2/+10The lack of Interface Builder has hampered my foray into iPhone development. This couldn't have come soon enough.
- Lounger540, on 03/28/2008, -1/+6Hate to burst your bubble, but this version of interface builder is missing a number of regular UI components still. This is really only useful for your very, very basic app with lists and text boxes.
Building a good GUI in code is actually easier and more customizable than fiddling around with checkboxes and menus in IB. IB overcomplicates what really only takes 2 lines of code.- roosterjm2k2, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Well, If it works like it does in normal cocoa development, I dunno...
I generally (on the windows side of things) found myself coding the GUI, just because after you do it a few times it seems faster...
But the way you can create and link classes to interface elements and everything, its pretty slick on the desktop/cocoa dev environment...haven't played with this yet though, so I cant say how it is for the iPhone - listrophy, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I'm a neophyte objective-c/cocoa dev, a novice UI writer, and an expert coder. IB, at the very least, provides a tutorial on UIs and a rapid development canvas to make things look pretty. I will likely write my own UI code in the long-run, but it helps to drag and drop stuff to make it look pretty right now.

- ucg1, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2I've never used Objective C, Cocoa or Interface Builder, and I found it pretty easy to build GUI's in code. The included frameworks make it simple. I don't really see how Interface Builder is going to make any easier (haven't tried Beta 2 yet). Of course I tend to find GUI designers limiting in any platform.
- Iwantawii, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2To be honest I think Microsoft runs a pretty tight ship with their VS2005/VS2008 component designer. At work we use .NET/C# and I really want to get into programming on the Mac as a side hobby but Objective-C and the XCode universe seem very, very different to me. Kind of strange with all the message passing and whatnot. Maybe it just hasn't "clicked" for me. Surely someone here has crossed this bridge before.
- ucg1, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I use the VS2008 component designer with C# at work too. It's one of the better ones, but still ***** me off often enough to prefer doing GUI's in pure code (only I can't because everyone else on my team wants to use the designer). I can make things much more generic with a code-only approach (for any platform). Then there's limitations to VS2008's designer such as you can't use abstract classes with it, what kind of ***** is that? What were they thinking?
For me, I've been doing mostly Java/.Net for the last five years. I haven't done C/C++ in ages, so with Objective C all of sudden I have to think about disposing my own resources again, and have to worry about crazy stuff like pointers again.
I'm also taking another stab at Ruby/Rails and that's also yet another entirely different universe.

- FlyinWhee, on 03/28/2008, -1/+10That was rumored for this summer - great, now let's see if I can pretend I can code something...
- eric123abacus, on 03/28/2008, -9/+4hey this is great! i'm worried my .dmg might be corrupted though. could someone post the sha1 hash they got for it?
- REBELinBLUE, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3$ /usr/bin/openssl sha1 iphone_sdk_9a2151.dmg

- MacParrot, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3Fast enough for what?
- parkermauney, on 03/28/2008, -12/+1The iPhone SDK was released?
- catachip, on 03/28/2008, -5/+3Umm.... did you miss what was probably the most anticipated and exciting release of an SDK to date? The $100,000,000 fund to help developers get started making apps? The AIM client, MS exchange support, the 3D games to rival the DS or PSP? It's been front page of www.apple.com for weeks. Or you can check out http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/
- markwilcox, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Successful troll is successful.

- dimer0, on 03/28/2008, -10/+1All you VB developers sure as hell need interface builder! Learn Cocoa, beotches, before you start relying on drag and drop tools heh
- spazzcat, on 03/28/2008, -10/+2I am looking for app ideas to develop. If you have any ideas that you want to share I set up a website for developers and users to share ideas. The site is http://www.iphoneappthink.com/
- alecks, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2You gonna share the profit you make off my idea too?
- ucg1, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1All you're going to get there is dumbasses who are confused about the point of your web site, like the only post so far that with suggestions for apps that only Apple can produce.
- abdm, on 03/28/2008, -6/+0bugs...bugs...bugs.... == unusable
- MacParrot, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2You DO realize that this is still in beta?
- abdm, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0hehehe of course :)

- apavluck, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1how hard is ObjC to learn? I know SAS and a little Python. Thanks.
- catachip, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Well, you can do a one-way ANOVA with a Tukey post-hoc test with SAS. Something tells me that writing for the iPhone or OS X in general is going to be significantly harder.
- alecks, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Actually, SAS doesn't allow one way ANOVAs in post-hoc. Those interfaces subside in the LOGOS heap and cannot be mapped.

- groberts1980, on 03/28/2008, -2/+5Is the iPhone SDK Mac only? Or is there a version for windows users?
- Plopfish, on 03/28/2008, -3/+3I'm pretty sure OS X Leopard is required. Bummer right? But I looked into it and there are ways to DL an iso that can be installed on a Windows machine to dual boot into OS X, check TPB. *I do not officially condone this and it most likely is illegal, continue at your own risk.*
- AtomB, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Only an Intel Mac version.
- Kholinar, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0Officially, yes. Unofficially, all you have to do is install the package then go into the packages folder and install all Aspen packages (for the old beta) or all iphone packages (for this new one).
Works fine on my g5 tower.

- tcugrilla, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1please someone build a directory that will allow me to sort contacts by different categories. i am taking a new job and really need this ability.
- DominicUK, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5You can already do this and have been able to do so since the iPhone came out! Just set-up contact groups in Address Book and sync.
- honorablesauce, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Yup. Works well, too.

- xsecretfiles, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I am so DL this and coming up with something over the weekend. I need input suggestions though..
- oo7evan, on 03/28/2008, -6/+0Still a big F U to PC users huh? Dang evil Apple.
http://gizmodo.com/368903/wired-on-apple-pray-to-e ...- Balanced, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Why should Apple post their entire development environment to a different platform? If you want to develop for the iPhone, a Mac Mini is probably not out of your budget... It's only a bit more than an iPhone itself!
- ucg1, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1***** Windows users, they are spoiled with their copies of iTunes, Safari, and Quicktime..
Show Linux some love, Apple. Linux should be the first platform to get a port of XCode.
Personally, I'd rather see an Eclipse plugin for iPhone development. XCode pales in comparison.
- dsa202, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1iPhone, uPhone, we all phone!
- SilverSeraph, on 03/28/2008, -2/+0I wish this new SDK can make iFartz with smell...
- dcolley, on 04/06/2008, -0/+1All this means is that the hacker didn't want a crappy PC.
