- username7410, on 11/18/2008, -4/+47This app seems like a perfect way to get stabbed in the head, or chain up in a basement, either way...
- jerryjamesstone, on 11/18/2008, -2/+37Yah, you will either save the planet by using less fuel or by your carbon footprint being zero since you are now dead.
- darkciti2, on 11/18/2008, -1/+19It needs a digg / bury user ranking system.
- samotage, on 11/18/2008, -1/+19That's unless the Canadian bus companies don't stop 'em!
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+15That's because it's San Francisco... in some places you'd get stabbed in the head just for lining up on a sidewalk.
- jbella, on 11/18/2008, -0/+13In San Francisco we've had a casual carpooling system for years now. This is where people heading into or out of the city line up on a sidewalk and people with cars pick them up. The driver gets to ride in the carpool lane during rush hour and the passenger gets a free ride. It's worked for years and no one has gotten stabbed in the head.
- weizbox, on 11/18/2008, -0/+10My 'just take a bus or walk' app can cut 5 times that much CO2! :D
Gotta love how people use these wild projections to push their products... - u5bLue, on 11/18/2008, -6/+15………………………………………………………………………………………………

- nosecohn, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a pun, but if so... hilarious.

- phroztbyt3, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5its not going to stop anything... its an iphone app.. people use them and get bored of them in about 15 minutes. especially a lame one like this. the rideshare app was out a year ago when jailbreaking was all the rage.... nothing changed.. this article is stupid.
- jjustin01, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5Murderer -- digg

Is this how it's supposed to work? - Seph7, on 11/18/2008, -1/+6I'm not your buddy, Friend!
- hbyrne, on 11/18/2008, -4/+9Cool application.
- jbella, on 11/18/2008, -0/+52008 being cold does not disprove anything. You have to look at the overall trends. It seems that people who do not want to believe the science will grasp at anything to prove it wrong... but the science for human produced climate change is stronger than any single data point.
- diggan8, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4"To Cut 73.6 M Tons of CO2 Annually...."
a. murdered people don't drive
b. convicted hitchhiking murderers don't drive
I see what you did there. - briguy200, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3I wonder if the app also tracks the best places to dump bodies.
- Lancer383, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3But at least you were being green!
- isaactwito, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3That's unfortunate because I just increased my C02 output by about 73.6 million Tons so they're pretty gay for trying to make a difference.
- jturbo, on 11/18/2008, -1/+4Can't say I've ever heard ANY Canadian ever pronounce about aboot. American propaganda.

what a crock of *****. - nosecohn, on 11/18/2008, -1/+3I'm sure there is a way to build in some safeguards, like they do on various ridesharing sites, but the article is really funny.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2wait a minute... why should Canadians be pissed about this?... I need to know before I jump on this bandwagon
- piranhaa, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2But your body decomposes, resulting in SOME carbon footprint. But alas, it's not as much as if you drive every day to work...
- doogmeist1, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2How about porting the app to other platforms so the non-Apple fanboys can save the planet too?
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee! Gotta pick up a couple extra rolls of duct tape in case I get the urge to abduct my rideshare partner! - duffman03, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2Check out their site, you get to rate the rider/passenger. I'd bet most women wouldn't want to pick up any male passengers with a less than perfect score. Very Cool app. +1
http://www.avego.com/ui/index.action - theuserdylan, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2The sudden urgency is not a "trend." It's the result of thousands of brilliants scientists who have studied massive amounts of data and realized that we are at or about to hit a breaking point. Picture this: It's like a car driving up the side of a hill at 100 miles per hour, only to realize that the hill is actually a cliff, and now the car has 100 feet to stop or else it's going to fly off the cliff. That's about where we are at right now. People aren't just making this stuff up. And people who think they know better than the experts about climate change are ridiculously arrogant. I'm not saying I'm brilliant. I'm not saying I've won a nobel prize. I'm not saying I've had numerous articles published in the best scientific journals. I'm not saying that I went to Harvard or Yale or Oxford or MIT. I didn't do any of that. But I listen to the people that have done all that stuff and an overwhelming majority (99.999%) of those people believe in climate change. So no, I'm not brilliant, but I'm a hell of a lot smarter than the arrogant ***** who "researched" the issue and thinks he knows better than these people.
- BabyWookie, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2It's not some gay casual sex thing, is it?
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+2that's why "global warming" is now called "climate change" aka "weather"
Yes, pollution is bad and we need to stop, but everyone acts like if we don't now by next year we'll all be wearing gas masks and staying inside to avoid acid rain. This sudden urgency is more of a trend than anything else, but hey if it works, it works. - jbella, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1What do you mean there is no data? You really have to stop getting your information from Fox news. You don't even have to look around very hard to find tons of studies that show the concentration of CO2 sinced the industrialized age. In fact you can find studies that can estimate CO2 concentration in the atmosphere going back over 600,000 years. Not only that, they can correlate that concentration to global temperature means. We have ice core data, tree ring data, ocean acidity data, mineral deposit data.. there is is an amazing amount of data. To say that you cant find any is absolutely ridiculous.
Beyond all that.. any rational person should be able to acknowledge that, give the potential dire consequences if the scientists are right, it burden of evidence should really be in those that say climate change is not happening! If I am wrong, then we would have created a world that uses cheap renewable energy for nothing. If you are wrong, then we could have a 20 meter sea level rise, the extinction of a large number animal species on the planet, and severe pressure on the human population.
As for your ridiculous hydrogen fueled vehicle argument...
Water vapor is also a potent greenhouse gas, but it is also not as persistent as CO2. In order to get rid of CO2 from the atmosphere it has to be chemically bound to something else and stored. This is what plants do when they absorb CO2 from the air. The oceans also absorb a certain amount of carbon. But this all takes time. It's a finely balanced cycle that we have been disturbing. Water vapor, on the other hand, is not quite a persistent. It can be removed from the atmosphere by simple precipitation... and no, I am not afraid that we would be able to put enough water vapor in the air that it would cause anyone to drown.
Having said all that I actually don't think hydrogen powered cars are the answer. I personally think we should not waste our time on half-steps like hydrogen and biofuels. I think we need to go straight to electric cars. - larsvilhelmsen, on 11/18/2008, -0/+120 million users? Well I guess that is possible, even though it is a large share of the relativley small number of iPhones sold, compared to almost anyone else in the telephone production bussiness. As to whether that will lead to a drop in emissions of that magnitude? I smell bussiness plan lingo and huge optimism while waiting for the right moment to sell the idea.
20 million users - how many active to reach that drop in emissions? Probably 60 million will be needed, if I am not mistaken on the general laziness of the human being. - madskjaer, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1How are they even able to predict 20 million users by 2020. In 2020 the iPhone will probably not exist in its current form anymore.
- partrow, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sounds like the author and poster too are on board the CO2 trap train.
- dieboldcracy, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1I can't believe people believe CO2 is a poison. I want an iPhone app that will let me cheat on my Carbon Tax in 2010
- TheYoshi, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I'll give you this last tid-bit before I stop this lunacy, your mind has clearly been raped completely by the agenda so there is no sense in trying to convince you otherwise. A perfect example of this complete and utter raping is the complete dismissal of any news source or scientific source stating the contrary to what your news/science sources say..... ah the simple mind of the enviro-loon.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-108 ... - PabloMac, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1It's better to be pissed off than pissed on. Don't ask how I know this.
- godzilla808, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Here in Arizona, we already have a system in place to match up people who want to carpool. Bonus: it doesn't track every move you make!
http://www.sharetheride.com/ - Tenoq, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I got it, I'm just not sure it if it was supposed to be funny.
- TheYoshi, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Show me some raw scientific data pointing to the fact that there is too much CO2 in the air. You can't because there is not any, you've been fed a line of crap and you swallowed it without thinking. To use your water point, does that mean we shouldn't research hydrogen fueled vehicles? They emit water vapor when they run, we don't want everyone drowning now do we.
Let me guess you're going to say that it wouldn't be an issue because the amounts of water vapor emitted by hydrogen burning vehicles would be so small it wouldn't matter. You also won't have any substantive evidence to back that up or speak to specific amounts, etc. Just like you can't with CO2, who's the simple minded idiot? I don't think it's the person who can think for themselves and know when someone is pushing an agenda that isn't what they say it is. - jbella, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1climate != weather.
Weather dictates what you will wear today. Climate dictates where and how your kids will be living.
CO2 pollution does not cause acid rain. It's not the particulate type of pollution that you can wear a gas mask to protect yourself from. And if we don't act soon, there are a lot of indications that we might pass a tipping point at which no amount of pollution controls will spare us from the more dire consequences. - TheYoshi, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Actually there are SCORES of scientific articles that debunk global warming, I'll list a few here for you:
http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/200 ...
http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2008/0 ...
http://www.junkscience.com/news/robinson.htm
The problem is you base what you hear solely on the media which is decidedly leftist and global warming is a huge part of what the left uses to exert control. Now before you go calling me a republican I'll go ahead and say that I'm not, I disliked McCain as the republican choice from the outset, and while I didn't vote for Obama I am not a straight party line republican, I'm more of a libertarian than anything else and I don't like the media or the government using alarmist tactics to try to limit my freedoms.
Should we trash the earth, no, absolutely not. Is most of the global warming stuff that you hear spewed in the news and from Al Gore horse-*****? Yes, absolutely. - BrandonP63, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Better headline: "iPhone Rideshare App to Increase car homicides by 73.6% annually".
- jbella, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1Sure but this is the way science works. It's not a smooth ride toward consensus. Unfortunately the media does not do a very good job of explaining science. They publish articles that make it seem like these scientists are making proclamations from the mountaintop that are infallible. The theory of global cooling never really grabbed hold because the data for it was extremely limited. In fact, I believe the entire thing was based on 1 scientific paper. It just happened to catch the fancy of the mainstream media at the time.
The important point is that THE SCIENCE IN NOT INCONCLUSIVE.
Sure there is margin for error-- there are no sure things in science. But you make it sound like there are scores of scientific papers that conclude that global climate change is not happening, in reality there almost none. I'm not kidding. This is about as conclusive as science gets. - QubitTarutaru, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1What is the "carbon footprint" of an iPhone, hmm?
- username7410, on 11/18/2008, -1/+2RTM? Don't you mean MDK?
