- hbazerbashi, on 10/11/2007, -7/+43AT&T are closer and closer to freak out :P
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -7/+39Um. But the iPhone already worked on prepaid plans. What's the big deal?
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -9/+40There is no big deal. Thsi hack is nothing more than a foolish inconveniecne.
Instead of using the included SIM and a contract free signup, you get to run a hack and get less functionality all for the same price.
But Diggers will think this is cool for some unknown reason and I'll surely be dugg down, so have at it. - yokozuka, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23I think they are freaking out already. This means that anyone can get the bloody thing with no long-term ties. It even allows using their company AT&T/Cingular SIM in the iPhone, allowing corporate discounts. You can get an iPhone now, activate it and use a prepaid card while you wait for the complete unlocking.
- rohanch, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Dugg for the picture.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13The only drawback to me, and forgive me if the article covers this, is that you don't get a data plan. A smart phone without a data plan is pretty much "just another phone".
- jollyholly, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18They had to know this would happen eventually. $599 paperweights suck!
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14you could already get it with no long-term ties.. just enter 999-99-9999 as your SSN and it lets you pay as you go.. which is what i'm doing and love it. Also much easier than what you have to do from this article.
- Continuum, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14If want "just a phone" then maybe the iPhone is a little much?
- thelelander, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7isn't the 2 year iphone plan cheaper than any voice+data plan you'd get with AT&T?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They fixed that 999-99-9999 SSN work around already.
- SirZRX, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15the last week we went vacation to las vegas, my brothers and me where all the day playing at the casino, later at the night, my father arrives and the first thing he said was: " Marco (thats me) , i saw a black phone with no buttons, that i controlled it with my fingers, it rotated automatically, it has wifi, music and i really want that phone, can u go with me tomorrow to buy the phone ? (my fathers english is limited) . I answered: " o rly?? (long silence)....dad thats the Iphone, and u cant buy one because is locked and u cant use that thing in mexico". my fathers face changed and said " i really wanted that phone"
- Drumrboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6uhh, "smart guy", there is a sim card...
congrats on looking like a moron! - desenso, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7But an ATT pre-paid plan is already available for the iPhone!
- indie1982, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's all about the ability to use EXISTING SIM cards in the phone. Corporate plans are not allowed on iPhone so if you've already got a corporate plan that gives 10%-20% per month discount then you can just pop your corporate SIM in the phone and start using it.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7You can already use the iPhone month to month just by entering 999-99-9999 for the SSN when you register. What does this hack offer beyond that? The ability to use the iPhone without a data plan (required even for month-to-month).
I personally think the iPhone would not be nearly as useful without the always on networking... - crackedplastic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Stop spamming Digg with your crappy blog.
- raada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I don't think they are freaking out very much... They just got 1 million (!) new customers over one weekend who DID sign up for 2 years... Even if they all would break the contract today, ATT gets a nice $150 Million in cash... They could care less if some eventually managed to hack it and new customers sign up with another phone company. They have not paid anything in the first place to lower the price of the Iphone.
- almalax19, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7AT&T doesnt care. They already offer Pay as you go with the iPhone. They still have you for 5 years if you want to keep your iPhone because they're the only carrier that you can use it with. If someone figures out how to fully unlock it for use with other carriers then AT&T will be pissed.
- windfanatic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6You guys are missing the point.. this in itself isn't "earth shattering" news.. but it is actually a sign of PROGRESS.. this means that the dudes with some serious spare time can now manipulate existing software in the iPhone (I am guessing they are disassembling and either manually trying to understand it/patching in their hacks, or creating some new assembler that modifies some of the system behaviour).. in any case.. the point of these news is..
They are beginning to understand Neo... as a low level programmer myself, I can only say kudos. This is some serious reverse engineering. - mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You didn't pay full retail price for your Blackberry. That, at least in my eyes, is the major issue here. You are paying the full price of the phone, and then being forced into a contract. The whole justification for the 1 and 2 year contracts is they help the phone company subsidize the phone costs, which they aren't doing here, so why should you have to sign a 2 year contract?
- Sippi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Ban this spamming assclown.
- unleashedlive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4blocked.
- NOCTech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So?
- albrad84, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but unless you use an extremely small amount of minutes, the pay-as-you-go plan is way more expensive and the difference in price will end up being more than the $175 cancellation fee
- jayselle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Pre-paid plan is a rip off. You pay a lot more money for month to month.
Apple probably doesn't care if it's unlocked as it would only increase their sales. - revenge7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Legally, aren't they required to tell you how to unlock any cell phone?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7And apple will just patch everything up in the next update.
- madrid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3AT&T sucks sufficiently that, if I get sick of their lack of customer service, their willingness to comply with government snooping, and their spotty wireless service, I have the option to bail without paying off the contract, which is why I am using their pay-as-you go plans. It still costs me $60 bucks a month, sans the lock-in.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3it does, it's because Apple and AT&T don't advertise it. I saw it from a story on digg and immediately bought an iphone because I didn't have to have a contract and so I had the freedom to sell it whenever I got bored of it or the glamor wore off and I stopped liking it (hasn't happened yet). Even though it was on digg, people still pretend like it doesn't exist and conclude that the phone costs $2000+.
- tomi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You're thinking "hacked" in the completely wrong way.
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Though your comment is burried 10 deep, the digg/bury ratio in the iPhone articles is way off from reality. The majority of diggers who do comment and vote, I'm near certain, don't waste their time in the iPhone articles unless they're irritated enough to do so. It's pretty much just the fanboys voting and masturbating on each other.
- dragonmantank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Unless you want to use the phone outside their normal calling area (I can't use AT&T where I live, or just about any GSM provider for that matter), or you want a portal computer via the wifi.
- CaptainScarlet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3To be honest I dont see why there is SOOO much hub bub about unlocking your iphone. What's so wrong with a 2 year contract?? Christ my Blackjack is the same way. I have no desire to screw around with my phone. It makes calls, I get my email, I surf the web and I pay a bill. You can digg me down all you want, but sometimes people make a mountain out of a mole hill..
- stoitofardo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3ew, slavery is bad
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I asked an average joe (Someone with a Masters degree in a non-computer-related field, the kind of person who spends thousands on bose speakers and bought a mattress so expensive he's paying it off over three years), who was looking to replace their cell phone the week before the iPhone came out, if he was going to get an iPhone, I mentioned you can type on it, his response, which I think the average american agrees with, was simple : "Why on earth would I want to type on my phone?" That's the non-geeks opinion. The geek isn't the target market, yet they are the ones buying it, and what we're seeing in this article is the geeks response : "I bought an iPhone, doesn't it do more?" "No?" "Well, maybe if I take out a screwdriver and dig around inside it'll do more?" "Still nope." "How about a software hack?" "Doubtful, at best you'll be able to use it without phone features on wifi only." "Why did i spend $600 on this again?"
- bjs3171, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3ah yes, two years of paid for slavery. god forbid a company has a phone associated with them like every other phone in the world.
- fahrvergnuugen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't even care about the discount, I just want to be able to add an iPhone to our company's plan without having to create a NEW plan and then expense it every month. Seriously AT&T. WTF.
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've had success with the Monster brand LCD TV cleaner during the first few weeks with my non-iPhone where I was touching the screen (I've since learned not to do that). NOTE (and this is somewhat serious): Do not use anything with alcohol in it like windex, or within a few months your screen will be all discolored and yellow. To most people this kind of thing is obvious, but iPhone users aren't exactly 100 watters, if you know what I mean.
- raada, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3And it works in the rest of the world and with any phone company....
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Isn't entering a fraudulent SSN against the law?
- mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You don't sign a contract when you buy it. You buy the phone, take it home, activate it and agree to a contract somewhere during that process.
- tiburon33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the pic too, why don't we put ed whitcare in a black rope, and let george lucas direct him on the evils of having net neutrality? haha/jk
- Soulhuntre, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Not till Apple figures out how to code cut and paste into it.
My Treo kicks the iPhones ass then SMS texts Steve a "bite me message" daily. - robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can get calls on Wi-Fi at home, use T-Mobile HotSpot at Home..
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Does anyone here believe the type of people who get pre-paid plans are the type of people to spend $600 on a phone? Hmmm.
- CrashinDutchman, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7Suggest your father to buy an HTC P3600... It has almost the same functionality as the iPhone and as a plus it has GPS
- mpg31337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In my case, my company pays for an AT&T Blackberry with unlimited calls and data. So now in theory I could use the SIM my company pays for in an iPhone and get all of the functionality for just the $500 cost of the phone.
- billyballer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Personally, I want away from AT&T because they offer 'No Signal' at my house, while TMobile has 5 bars. I can't use a phone as my primary phone if I can't get a call at home. Too bad I can't get calls over Wifi since that would be all I'd need to commit to AT&T. AT&T said that they offer a 30 day buyer's remorse clause that you can cancel your 2 year contract; which I intend to to before July 29th.
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Plus tax... So I was a little low in my price estimate .... Where I live we have an 8.5% sales tax is about $650, maybe $649 and change if you want to be accurate.
