- Flunk, on 09/05/2008, -4/+207I prefer taping all my remotes together, I call it Megatron.
- arcticsoft, on 09/05/2008, -4/+63I didnt know a remote had a monthly cost. I think I'll stick to the old AA battery remote.
- camino262, on 09/05/2008, -7/+62Just buy a Logitech Harmony.
- CLShortFuse, on 09/05/2008, -7/+48Way too pricey, considering old PDAs and phones with infrared could do this for years. You need to put new adapters for nearly everything so it would work via Wi-Fi
- buddyw, on 09/05/2008, -3/+33I prefer my universal remonster. He can only be killed by stabbing him in the heart with the ancient bone saber of Zumakalis!
- buddyw, on 09/05/2008, -2/+27Or probably his head or lungs too, just stab him wherever really.
- stevetrojanman, on 09/05/2008, -1/+26Thank god...because you know...unless the iPhone can completely take over my life and make it entirely unnecessary for me to move my fat ass around, it fails.
- buddyw, on 09/05/2008, -2/+26And the saber probably doesn't have to be bone. Really just like anything sharp just laying around the house.
- Diggnabbit, on 09/05/2008, -0/+23Yeah, but how many devices do you have that work on WiFi? I have zero.
- buddyw, on 09/05/2008, -4/+24You could poke him with a pillow and kill him.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -5/+22"...or locking your doors from bed."
I will never let a hackable device control my locks. No way. - arcticsoft, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17but the cost is very small in comparison. Plus you are not under a 2 year contract to buy AA batteries.
- ExSlashdotter, on 09/05/2008, -5/+20path of least resistance, my friend.
Unless your house has 0 windows and metal doors, then hackable locks aren't going to be the preferred method of breaking and entering.
On another note, are your doors made of wood? Because thats 'hackable' if you want to get down to it. An axe costs like $20 at Home Depot. - russdthree, on 09/05/2008, -1/+15Agreed. $10/month? "And it'll cost you a "license" that will likely be "over $100 and less than $500," to make up for lost touchscreen remote revenue."
Are you effin' kidding me? - SkeletalBias, on 09/05/2008, -0/+13Really long sticks however do not have a monthly fee.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14I kinda agree, most SMART phones have the infrared option that most recievers have to do this.
Now you want to hook things up on wifi?
Oh but it comes with a free black turtle neck: I'm sold !!! - prleet, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14HOLY *****, not...
MY PSP has been doing this for years.....my HP48GH has been doing this since 1997..its a freaking calculator.. - megaton, on 09/05/2008, -5/+15Hey!
Oh. - Diggnabbit, on 09/05/2008, -3/+13I can't do any of those things with my iPhone, or a computer, either. Because, well, I don't live in some kind of super-automated house-of-the-future where everything is on WiFi. Who does? But, I do have Logitech Harmony that controls my TV/DVD/360/Cable/Receiver/etc.
- dext3r, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10I was really surprised so many people could keep the quote train going, but then I realized its all from the same guy. Regardless, I'm still digging each one up.
- InJectaH, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10That remote costs $1,200 a year, I want one, plus it's the only remote that bills you every month. How cool is that?
- nilsalb, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8Not the IR remotes !!
- KaivenTor, on 09/05/2008, -1/+9But what are the odds the battery will die on you just as you need to turn the volume down on the porn you're watching in order to not wake the neighbors?
- 9mmCensor, on 09/05/2008, -7/+15iPhone remote for the AppleTV. I think so.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7But all those things cause noise. I'll hear it, grab a gun, POW. Unlocking a door and quietly sneaking in is pretty easy compared to chopping a door down.
- SmellyBroom, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7Peep Show?
- buenit, on 09/05/2008, -3/+10I'd feel pretty uncomfortable knowing I could accidentally "unlock" my doors from 500 miles away with my phone. Not to mention, you would actually trust your phone with something like that?
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6You'll look just like those fat spacefarers from Wall E.
- DiggItalia, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7Dugg for the "peep show" reference.
Ah, I miss the UK! - kipmartin, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6will this walk my dog? make a sammy? will i be able to mute the TV when i answer a call?
personally, i'm looking forward to the day when i never have to leave my overstuffed well-worn lounger,or as i prefer to call it, 'the Command Module'. - cotaskmemalloc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6Right, because spending $10 a month to do what I can accomplish by walking across a room and flipping a switch is a great use of my money.
- megaton, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6But the article is about home automation remotes... *sigh*
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6Remoticons.....transform!
- sacherjj, on 09/05/2008, -2/+7Wow. Isn't IR good enough? My many versions of Palm organizers have done this for 10 years. My current Treo does it. It has worked on Windows Pocket PCs for years. Oh, to use Wi-Fi, I need to pay for an iPhone and replace all my other stuff. Yes. I don't think so.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6ahhhh, nerdrage at its finest
- Yupp, on 09/05/2008, -2/+7And so continues the "made for ipod" march across all devices. Most automobiles are already ipod compatible. Now home theatre and automation equipment will be the same. Although this is not going to be most people's killer app, there is a lot of subtle influence on purchases when there is such a big 3rd party that interacts with the iphone.
It's like peer pressure from all the other devices in your life. - Andrwmorph, on 09/05/2008, -4/+9I had a program that did this like 9 years ago on my first palm pilot (a Handspring Visor). It was like 10 dollars.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Your mom does that
- pooljoe, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5I have a Harmony 1000, Kicks ass and no monthly fees to use it
- dullnation, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4....and there are so many people that have several macs in the house and AppleTV.
- therippa, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but I like my remotes to have a battery that last more than a day...damn you 3g
- Speed, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I just steal the spare batteries that are laying around at work. I suppose if something goes wrong I could risk a 2-4 year contract with the Canadian Correctional System, but meh, if a cat killer gets community service, I shouldn't get *****.
- Gutterpunk, on 09/05/2008, -7/+10Yeah, that is a terrific idea! Only not.
There is hundreds of dedicated automation remote on the market, that probably do the job better and out of the box, and that you don't bring with you when you exit the house, leaving other family members stranded (with no way of opening the blinds :) ).
I can see this used for convenience or as a project for the techy, but not as a main remote - Diggnabbit, on 09/05/2008, -2/+5Did you read it? It's not free at all.
- sacherjj, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3How do I control my blinds with RF? Is there an adapter that goes on my $5 blinds to pull the strings and twist the thingy? Do I need a robot to load the wood into my fireplace? I assume it would be fairly elementary to make a cigarette lighter in one of his fingers to start it. Does the other hand get a fire extinguisher to turn it off?
- jmreid, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Like, really?
- skidooer, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Most IrDA ports are unable to work in the spectrum required to operate devices like TVs. So, even with an IrDA port, it wouldn't be too useful.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3If my locks are controlled by computers, then yes, they would have been replaced.
- Speed, on 09/05/2008, -3/+61. Why the ***** would you unlock your doors if you're 500 miles away?
2. Why can't you get off your lazy ass and do it yourself?
3. Is the light switch really too complicated for you?
4. It's called a programmable thermostat.
5. My coffee pot has done this out of the box for years.
6. Fire hazard. - slackerxpc, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Replace my Harmony 880? Never!
