- fober, on 10/11/2007, -5/+143First I hear of this 'iPhone'.
Sounds interesting. - geekee, on 10/11/2007, -10/+125iPhone is the Paris Hilton of Digg
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/11/2007, -34/+120anyone else getting tired of this goofy narrator guy?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -5/+77This is actually really impressive. The whole resizing of zones and ***** so that you don't accidentally press the wrong key is really innovative.
- bobaghanoush, on 10/11/2007, -11/+81Someone listed no physical keyboard as a con...am I the only one who hates half my phone face devoted to a keyboard whos buttons are too small anyway?
- illegalamigo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+65THIS MAN DOES NOT BLINK
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+43Steve should do it.
- theysayjump, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41If you squint whilst he's talking, he looks like a bald guy with no body.
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38I thought it was pretty cool how the guy at the end could rip through a pretty tough text message.
- griz, on 10/11/2007, -9/+44I love the way it adjusts the tap zone on the fly based on the intended spelling of a word. Not all they need is a form a tactile feedback. I recently read in PopSci that someone is developing a means to "thump" the device when a virtual key is tapped. Making it feel like a click. I was hoping to see this feature in the iPhone.
- Morca007, on 10/11/2007, -19/+40Great, more ads being dug up, Apple loves you guys.
- madskjaer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22That's the best idea I've heard today.
- boyasunder, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20I'm pretty sure he was chosen entirely on the basis of his enormous hands.
- winnch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13No, he isn't. I absolute despise these chicklet keyboards. Cheap plastic, tiny keys. Specifically, my Blackberry Pearl. I'd much prefer a soft keyboard with bigger keys and smarter logic.
Listing it as a con is like reviewing a tricycle and saying, "Con, Three wheels instead of two."
The iPhone is a fundamentally different approach to how a cell phone should look and feel, and what it should do. - rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17When he emotes his eyebrows don't move. It's kind of creepy.
- Rice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Would a normal smartphone keyboard _not_ frustrate you?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I think Subarushian was being sarcastic.
The iPhone has a lot of great features but people seem to be finding any reason to ding the iPhone. The lack of ringtones being one of those.
I'm thinking that Apple is doing it on purpose for the initial release of the iPhone. Every time an iPhone rings, anyone within earshot will know it's an iPhone. That is free marketing and I don't blame them. Plus, I wouldn't mind the noise level of obnoxious ringtones being lowered. - aticus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'll believe it when I touch it.
- TenebrousX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9that's what she said
- DJNephilim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I wanna know who's typing while they are driving.
If it's you, then you're an idiot. - lxplicit, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Too bad you can't use the keyboard during landscape mode. That would make it even better.
- huntrm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9works! 408-550-3542 hahaha! Time to hack John Appleseed's voicemail!
- joe90210, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12oh ok, if apple PR tells me it's easy, i guess I have nothing to worry about then!
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Waiting for "iPhone gen two" is kind of silly if you ask me. It's a device with one physical button, and a giant screen! Buying the iPhone now IS buying iPhone gen two - and three and four! That's the advantage of an all software interface. You know, just like in Star Trek...
- MadOtaku, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10*Predictive. Predictable would be a boring conversation via txt.
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8a) Did you even read bobaghanoush's original post? He asked if he was the only one that doesn't like having the phone face take up half the face of the phone, like the Treos and Blackberries. You responded by assuring him he's not the only one, and then you go on to tell him he's the only one that feels that way. Huh?
b) I used to be in your camp, thinking Apple was all style and no substance. Then I got a MacBook and realized how wrong I was. And I'm no beginner; the last Apple computer I used was the Apple ][e, and it's been PCs since Windows 3.1. I would definitely consider myself a power user. Apple takes both form AND function into account. And they don't hobble their systems in doing so; I can do everything I did on my PC (which is just about everything there is to do on a personal computer) on my Mac, and almost entirely better, faster, and easier. So to say that all of Apple's products are on form over function is in incredibly ignorant and misinformed assertion.
c) Every review I've read has stated that the learning curve for the soft keyboard is steep for the first couple days, but that in less than a week they were typing faster than they ever did on their Treos or Blackberries. It may be hard to believe, but these are no noobies when it comes to phones--they're professionals who have probably been using smartphones with hard keyboards for years since there have been smartphones with hard keyboards. They disagree with you.
d) Did you watch the video? The punctuation took barely any longer to type than a regular key. Yes, the period takes an extra keypress to type, but then all punction takes only one extra keypress. This, as opposed to a hard keyboard where you have to press and hold a shift button to do most of the punctuation. So you lose a step with the period, sure, but everything is easier. And it didn't seem to slow the guy in the video down much at all. Once it gets to be habit, it will be a complete non-issue. - billdcat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Typing on a full keyboard doesn't seem to have guaranteed you perfect spelling, or punctuation.
Seriously, though, imagine if every keyboard of every size and shape were evaluated. Not one would yield perfect typing. User error far exceeds any problems associated with a soft keyboard. - mRIpX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/iphone/2007/keyboard/iphone-keyboard_848x480.mov
could they make any more subfolders to put the video in - anaesthetica, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7When I read aticus's comment, I thought to myself, "that's just begging for a 'that's what she said' reply". Then I clicked your comment, threw my hands up in the air, and said "yes!" out loud to my empty apartment.
I don't know whether to feel vindicated by instant gratification or sad and ashamed. - jdoc, on 10/11/2007, -11/+18I constantly find myself typing in different languages, like portuguese for example. I have a feeling this keyboard would make me very frustrated.
- JimmyIkon, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13Everyone who takes the time to hate on this phone probably just can't afford one. And each story reminds them.
- kelly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6No, you're not the only one.. though you would think so judging by all the Apple haters on this site.
- Dazabrit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Uhhh, yes it does. It has just been confirmed! iTunes 7.3 will allow you to capture a 30 second snapshot of a music track to use as a Ringtone.
Thing is... you have to pay $0.99 to convert it into a ringtone (and pay the extra license fee to the fat cat music industry) - jeffeb3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6you should come to the twentieth century. The T9 stuff makes it much more efficient, and I've never met anyone who has switched from T9 to normal tap-tap-tap typing...
- spingk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Besides how do you read a video section?
- itchyfeet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Sense of humour to aisle 12... Sense of humour to aisle 12...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not to mention, the people with no arms.
- aggemam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Hahaha someone defaced it now and changed the password ... "Hello you've reached the Apple iPhone. There's no one available to take your call, so please, if you're a fanboy, leave your name and number, and we'll do everything in our power not to call you. And, if you're some kind of an iPhone hater, well, please leave your address and we'll make sure to mail you a brick which you can use to, um, make long-distance phonecalls with. All right, good luck everyone, stop leaving ridiculous messages. Good bye."
- rogersmj, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Actually I never do look at the video section, which is why Digg should listen to its users and create an aggregate view.
- Dazabrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Have some faith.
The iPhone does have its fair share of problems (2.5G being the biggest) but there is going to be some serious egg on face moments over the coming months/years. For a start... some of the 'missing' features touted this week are actually already there!!! (such as Exchange Server and Music Ringtone Capability).
Then there is: Official Software Updates, Apps for sale through iTunes, Landscape Keyboard Mode, 3rd Party Software, Physical Keyboard Overlays (and Gaming overlays) for the people who really 'need' them (see the filed Patents), 3rd Party Games. You wait....
Do you 'really' think Apple are stupid? They know how to exploit a product. They are one of the fastest growing companies. They know what features to include and when. Which features to charge extra for etc
Even if they weren't planning on tackling some of these features just yet.... after all the bitching they will definately think about getting them outta the gate sooner!
Stop the 'iPhone is Teh Doomed' nonsense until you actually witness all the launch features, get feedback from people who actually purchase one and witness the thousands of unique accessories and updates that will appear within the first few months. It's like the bloody iPod rants of 5+ years ago. - nato64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I totally agree. I can see how "trusting" the keyboard will make you type just as fast as any other keyboard with tactile feedback. The difference being that when you don't need the keyboard you double the size of the screen. I'd be more than willing to spend a few days learning to type this way in order to get 2x larger smartphone screen..
- Hercules, on 10/11/2007, -10/+14We have more iPhone stories submitted than anything else lately.
I am bored of it. The reviews have been reasonable, but nobody yet has said "run and get it". And that is reason enough to realize that Generation 2 is probably a lot more worth waiting for than people think.
This is the first time I've ever really agreed with Dvorak -- but just shut up about the iPhone already. - sam1am, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4See http://www.immersion.com/industrial/touchscreen/ for one example of a tactile touchscreen. I've played with this stuff (though from a different manufacturer) and it's really cool.
- kijiro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Umm, you can.
- mediaphile, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5it doesn't learn common words, it learns words it's never seen before, and proper pronouns. It's not like it knew the sentence he was trying to type. The stuff he was typing was standard stuff.
such a cynic. you guys will come up with anything to just to try to discredit Apple. - addicted68098, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't think blind people have any interest in inaccessible apple software
- daGUY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can reset an iPod if it freezes without having to remove the battery - I'm sure there's an equivalent way to do so on the iPhone.
- ohmar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3There is only so much space on the screen. Im amazed that you choose this to complain about.
- maninalift, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have just been reading in the paper that ringtone vendors are in trouble because it is now easy on most phones to download mp3s from your PC and use them as ringtones. Why would anyone pay more for a 20s clip than for the whole song. Apple true to DRM form has found a way to prise open the consumers wallets.
I'm sure someone will find a hack to allow you to use your own mp3s as ringtones. The point I think is just to get the suckers paying. I don't think that Diggers are the same people as pay for their ringtones. - DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why would a blind person want an iPhone when they couldn't use most of it's features anyway?
