iPhone Flops at Scotland Launch
grantmc.co.uk — It was the iPhone launch tonight in Scotland and it looks like it has fell flat on its face. The launch went the complete opposite to its American brother!

NOT!
along with the cautious rest of us, they're waiting for the price to drop to something a bit more sensible
and the SDK - grantmc1, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Yea it is very pricey and i don't think it will ever take off really. The next gen model may have a better chance if the city has hot spots by then.
- streak, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1IMHO, EDGE isn't swift, but it is quite adequate. The iPhone renders web pages very fast, which makes up for much of the slowness of the cellular network. All smart phones (and networked PCs) are slowed by Internet latencies, anyway. The most important feature of the iPhone is that even when the user has to wait for a web page to load, they know the wait will be rewarded with a perfectly usable web page. Other 3G smart phones might download pages a little faster, but the pages usually look like cr@p and are difficult, if not impossible, to use. Navigation around a page is also completely natural on the iPhone, with no need for a tiny stylus to point and click at tiny scroll bars that consume screen real estate.
- streak, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2By my reckoning, the iPhone shouldn't be so popular (as in actual sales, not mere interest) among people who don't already own a smart phone or who aren't already convinced to buy a smart phone. The reason is that the average cell phone owner is blown away by the cost of a smart phone data plan. At least in the U.S., though, the data plan for iPhone is effectively half the price of other smart phones. While the entry cost for iPhone is higher than many smart phones, the lower monthly fees make the iPhone less expensive in the long run than almost all smart phones. In my own case, I was already using a smart phone (HTC 8525) and the lower monthly fees for the iPhone will pay for the device (at its original $599 price) in 2 years. Considering the iPhone's mobile Safari and Mail both render HTML accurately, the decision to switch to the iPhone was a no-brainer.
My question is: how does the data plan (or total monthly service fee) for the iPhone compare to that for other smart phones in Scotland?- grantmc1, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1you can buy smart phone on a pay as you go basis in the UK unlike the iphone and you can get a plan for the smart phone starting at £20-£25. Its cheaper than the iphone, also if you get say the £35 tarif you get the smart phone for free on contract.
- streak, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1What is the price of an unlimited data plan in the UK? I've had unlimited plans for all of my smart phones in the US. For me at least, it's even more important to have an unlimited data plan for the iPhone. The web works so well, I use mobile Safari 10X as much as with any previous smart phone I've owned (Treo 650, 700p, 750, HTC 8525).

- harrymc1, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Good article grant, well done!
- Wildhoney, on 11/10/2007, -1/+2That's no surprise really. It's lacking an MMS feature which is pretty much a prerequisite for selling it in the UK!
- grantmc1, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Yes its a shame you cant send pictures through sms or mms! Thats one of the silly luittle thing i think that apple forgot or overlooked.
- bigthree, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1surprising - the iphone sold well in Germany and they expectit to sellout during the holidays. Maybe people are waiting for a price job like the one that occurred in the US
