So what is it then, just an "i"? - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/11/2007, -11/+47I realize I risk being dugg down, but Apple didn't force you guys to upgrade. They didn't force you to unlock your iPhone, and they didn't force you to buy the thing in the first place. As far as I know, there were other phones in the marketplace before Apple entered it. These phones all worked on your carrier of choice. Anyone who bought an iPhone to purposely unlock it and hack it took a risk.
I far prefer reading the guys who look at this as a game of cat and mouse with Apple than the ones who are constantly whining. The hackers realize that they are hacking the iPhone to do what it wasn't intended to do. They realize that any update from Apple can, whether inadvertently or purposely, reset their iPhone back to square one, or worse turn it into a brick. That's part of the thrill for them. But looking at this as a revolution of the people vs. the man is just silly. - tucktan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29its an overpriced ipod touch
- imbob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27its like the PSP all over again so when can we start to play illegal ISO's on it?
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Day 32: I look at my marvelous reflection of myself in my iBrick. STILL THE SHINIEST!
- sinner0423, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15This is a better solution than what's currently going around on the net, 80,000 begging on iPhone forums for a fix
If you've got an iPhone that's been unlocked - don't update to 1.1.1. It's that simple. It renders your IMEI (cell phone serial number) useless if you've got it unlocked & using it with another provider. This isn't about 3rd party apps, this is about people getting ***** who want the phone to not be exclusive to AT&T. - nubnub, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20.
- lobasuu, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19.
- Tezgno, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Just a correction that is not listed on TUAW's updates, for those of you who are on AT&T who updated your phone to 1.1.1 and want to go back to 1.0.2 because you want you apps back, you can do so and still have full functionality to the phone. For those of you with "iBricks," this will restore the phone back to working, but anything that requires the cellular signal will not work. This is currently being worked on.
- Dylson, on 10/10/2007, -10/+22.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13when they start making games for it.
- hourog, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Folks, understand, as these phones now exist, they're iBricks - they do NOTHING. With this downgrade method, at least some functionality is returned. Hopefully, the team can use this platform to proceed on to totally unlock these phones again, so they work. They may never have all the new bells and whistles available in newer firmware updates, but at least people, all over the world, can again use the iPhone as a PHONE.
- c0ntagi0us, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17.
- Rcdriver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9This looks like it'll turn into the situation with the PSP firmwares.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I can't believe all the whining about this. Why did any of you buy a phone that didn't have the functionality you wanted? Instead, you buy something that a company TOLD you didn't do certain things, flush with the knowledge that the hackers would soon bring you the bliss. Now you're pissed because Apple made changes that they SAID they were going to do?
- hove, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7It's like an sms but with sound rather than text.
- thefinger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since the iPhone, no one's had time for simple and fun. Too busy up/downgrading/bricking/jail breaking. I don't suppose anybody uses their iPhone for making phone calls?
- mrroarke, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Awesome! Cuz it's been all of 10 minutes since the last iPhone story!
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What the hell's a phone call?
- thefinger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This is just a soap opera. You paid money and emotional angst for a soap opera?
- Mizzike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5...couldn't have said it better. right on, man.
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5By law they are allowed to do that. And apple has no right to disable anything, espcially once its on another providers network. The phone no longer has anything to do with AT&T.
- frunch217, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Nice! ***** Apple!
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5not to mention the obesity
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Seeing how you have an MS flag for an avatar I'll type slower for you.
He simply means just use the phone as presented. If you want more than what the iPhone can do (and since Apple seems to have no interest in opening it up anytime soon), then buy a different phone. There you go! - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6So what happens when someone can't call 911 on ther iphone after updating? Is jobs going to jail?
- ThReAtEnEd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you macboys r just sad.
- fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Just look at this, what started the whole thing:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9 ...
I've seen SOO many forum threads like that get closed or removed as the mods or admin think its just some n00b - but in this case, it was 100% true!
Makes you wonder how many newbies accidentally find something - then nobody wants to know or believes them! - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5He didn't actually BUY one. He just pretends so he can sound cool complaining about it on digg
- rdas7, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I'm so happy I can finally downgrade the software in my device. As an iPhone owner, if there's one thing I hate its cutting edge software. I'm waiting for the OS9 port.
- SirZRX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3mouses and pirates...always win!
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, it really isn't.
- Scheissenegger, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7don't forget that you can't unlock a downgraded phone atm!!!! it doesn't downgrade the baseband so the unlock won't work!
(for those who have a new phone with 1.0.2 or earlier, look at this link, it tells you how to unlock, without upgrading to 1.1.1: http://coolblog.profit42.com/2007/09/27/unlock-you ... ) - kmotiv1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3as far as I know, 1.0.2 still has a keypad with a 9, and a 1 on it.
- reddikilowatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2A fashion statement.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2When I bought my phone it had 1.0.2 and a statement from Apple that they wouldn't try to actively prevent 3rd party apps from running. I still have 1.0.2, but now Apple has cryptographic signing on 1.1.1. So, when I bought it, it did do what I wanted it to do.
- dsharma, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Why every things with iPhone/Steve Jobs is making to main page of digg. Looks like apple is working hard on diggs ....
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So just like an iPod then.
- aristotle0dude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The unlock tools are modifying system level files. The way the hacking tools are modifying the system could be causing the firmware update to fail to complete successfully.
There are several possibilities:
1. Jailbreak could be setting the permissions or ownership incorrectly.
2. Jailbreak modifies files which causes a CRC+version check to fail in the firmware update to fail part of the way through.
If some of the files were not updated during the update, an incompatibility between the flash rom and one of those file could result in an unbootable system.
It is possible that Apple built a check for modifications to a particular file that these hacking tools do not modify to determine whether to start the update process to support multiple branches of code internally. - cruzer2727, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Just did my download, IT WORKED!!! Awesome! i couldnt really tell a difference in the speaker phone and receiver volume anyways. It still needs to be louder! I love how i can customize this so much! thanks for this TUT.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if I were Apple, this isn't really the kind of story I'd want publicized.
- luet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"After downgrading your iPhone will most likely not work as a phone."
so... then it's basically an iPod touch. Then why buy a ***** iPhone for this stuff? - SirZRX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes it will, someone found a way to flash the baseband whit putty
- Gee1004, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2And the beat goes on
- nick1000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Anybody tried this on an iBrick..... http://developer.ribbitphone.com/
Can someone make VOIP calls using this? - KirbyMeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Since Apple had a fanbase.
SRSLY ITS A COMPUTER, NOT A SOCIAL MOVEMENT - paloooz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Because they don't care anymore?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Meanwhile the rest of the world could care less........
