- mcduck, on 11/29/2008, -7/+37I wish somebody would port Android. It would rock on the iphone.

This is amazing. - macaholic, on 11/29/2008, -7/+20How many times is this going to make the front page?
- pcpimpster, on 11/29/2008, -1/+9AppleMacStud is the new king of oxymorons
- neelsama, on 11/29/2008, -3/+10Another great addition to a great phone.
- dagr8tim, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7*coughs* Troll *coughs*
- mohrt, on 11/29/2008, -3/+9Inferior now... but with little effort:
* free wireless tethering
* compatibility with android, etc.
* phone available to other carriers
* access to tv over internet, and other things apple won't allow because of their own proprietary itinerary
* ??? - 4ZERO1, on 11/29/2008, -2/+8Much Respect, Good Work!
- Selkies, on 11/29/2008, -3/+9this is just the beginning. When there is support for all the hardware, it's going to kick ass because every current app will be available.. FOR FREE BUT BETTER! thats why :)
- karlw, on 11/29/2008, -2/+7solid
- cardyology, on 11/29/2008, -2/+7"Everything else is just child's play" .....ya because the Linux Terminal is about as easy to use as a speak 'n' spell.
You sir, are the epitome of a fanboy. - coldkill3r, on 11/29/2008, -1/+6The thing is, its still on the front page.
- junkneo, on 11/29/2008, -2/+7On other news: Linux finally ported to iPhone!

Digg should start a 'Dugg' section.
iRepeat (from the previous comment):
iPhone + Linux = myPhone. - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -2/+7old news
- DelMonte, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3"I thought you were being sarcastic.. then I saw your name.'"
He is being sarcastic, his only purpose on digg is posting completely over the top pro-Apple comments that even the most fervent Apple fanboy would never post.
AppleMacStud is an Apple hatter, trying to make Apple fans look bad. - OneManArmy, on 11/29/2008, -10/+13THIS STORY IS A ***** DUPLICATE. do people that actually submit stories read digg AT ALL?
im really starting to hate what this place has become. - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4This seems pretty pointless, because you need to connect it to a computer to do anything, and even moreso since the iPhone already has Darwin on it. If you jailbreak it there are terminal emulators. The only problem is that it seems like not much has been done with it.
I suppose it -could- be useful if you could at least make phone calls while running Linux, and especially if you could connect a bluetooth keyboard/mouse. Maybe this will come in time. - mrsteveman1, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4With a little effort but how long are you going to wait? Apple isn't going to help one way or the other i'm sure, so its always going to be a step (or a few hundred steps) behind the native OS.
BTW, to get out of Apples claws it would be much easier to just jailbreak the original OS, in which case you can do a lot of the things Apple refuses to allow right now. Internet TV isn't one of them though, nothing is stopping people from putting apps on the appstore that stream video, in fact there are already a few albeit crippled on 3G. - phunlee, on 11/29/2008, -5/+8go away then. I didn't catch this the first time and a lot of other people didn't either. Obviously. Skip it if you've read it. Wow.
- chodge89, on 11/29/2008, -4/+6I agree that there is no apparent advantage now. But I think that it is one of those "I did it just to see if it's possible" sort of things and then see if it could be built on in the future.
- TouchRevolution, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3Duplicate! Buried. Second of all, it wasn't the Dev Team. It was http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/2008/11/linux-on ... That is the official site. Not blog.iphone-dev.org
- mrsteveman1, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3That's exactly why i bought an iTouch, i thought it would be cool to have a unix terminal in my pocket :D
I also like having a webdav server on the thing accessible over wireless but there are a bunch of those in the appstore anyway.
Of course it works well for all the stuff it was intended for too :) - beshte, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2you are the only one who thinks this is pointless and stupid, stupid.
- ChayD, on 11/29/2008, -2/+4I brought a 2nd hand iPhone today. *Now* I see what all the fuss is about. I was previously a doubter, now I'm, like, "I can ssh into my *phone*!!" Crazy.
I'm not going to put linux on it, though, its native BSD will do just fine. - meghalc, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Size, Design, and Size of LCD
- gsmumbo, on 11/29/2008, -3/+5stfu and gtfo then. you know, if you saw this story before, then be smart, look at the effing title, and don't click on it. Oh wow. But then... then youd have to use a little of your brain. and that hurts
- Twinnie, on 11/29/2008, -2/+4What about using that boot loader to get the bluetooth working?
- mrsteveman1, on 11/29/2008, -2/+3Why Ubuntu? Ubuntus only claim to fame right now is a ready to use desktop and being the default among a lot of users.
The default desktop for ubuntu is completely worthless on a little screen like this, just like the OS X interface is worthless on such a device and why it was replaced with springboard etc.
There are already much better interfaces and Linux OS base available for mobile devices like this, android being one that is at the very least ready to use and improve, not to mention the ones intel and some other companies work on. - JustAboutReal, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1... it's progress
The point of releasing this video is to help generate some interest and hopefully attract a few programmers to help further the project - 4ndr3wk, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2it doesnt even have ***** graphic support yet, patience!
- tech42er, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Right, but they don't.
- JustAboutReal, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1OneManArmy - you ARE right... but really, it seems a bit troll-ish to let everyone know it's a duplicate in all caps. Not to mention the profanity
- allaun, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2Why buy a iphone if you can buy a openmoko? Roughly the same price with a lot more options.
- mcorto, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2Why would you ever wanna do that? I don't get it.
- Zurvanian, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1work hard to try and control their phone better?
how about caring for something more important than a little toy in your pocket?
I like the iphone but the amount of time i spend on it is based on the importance i give it... and also on how convinient it already is...
the ones who are not babies, in my opinions, will take the already very user friendly iphone and move on to something else more important... nothing to do with being influenced.... alot more to do with choosing priorities... - supergeek13579, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2i am just happy that i will be able to dual boot Linux and the iphone os.
- DelMonte, on 11/29/2008, -2/+3I applaud the efforts being put to get linux on the iPhone, but it's certainly much less interesting than it was to run linux on the non-touch iPods.
Non-touch iPods are running an hermetically closed OS with a very limited set of APIs, I've never seen any non official apps running on the iPod OS directly, all of the non-official apps were running in iPodlinux or Rockbox.
On the other hand, the iPhone and the iPod touch runs a subset of OS X, with a large set of APIs and other facilities, and you can get around the SDK limitations by jailbreaking. - DelMonte, on 11/29/2008, -2/+3It's nice to see linux being booted on the iPhone, but:
"* free wireless tethering"
-- Already done with jailbreaking.
"* compatibility with android, etc."
-- That's the only thing you named that can't be done with jailbreaking, but then again, if you want an Android phone, why don't you just buy one?
"* phone available to other carriers"
-- Done with jailbreaking again...
"* access to tv over internet, and other things apple won't allow because of their own proprietary itinerary"
-- Apple doesn't prevent access to tv over the internet on the iPhone. Proof: Joost was just released. And even if they did, jailbreaking would be enough to get around this. - JonForTheWin, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2@DelMonte You shouldn't have to fight against something you payed money for.
- domness, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1That's the idea of porting the Kernel. So things like Android can be put on the iPhone :D
- sdemat, on 11/29/2008, -14/+14Am I the only one who thinks this is pointless and stupid?
- hwood, on 11/29/2008, -5/+5Why?
- xp0rk917, on 11/29/2008, -12/+12what does this have to do with black jesus?
- MasterQ, on 11/29/2008, -2/+2lets see it run crysis...
- magamiako, on 11/29/2008, -4/+3no, they did it just to say they got linux booting on the iphone. You must understand the inner workings of a geek's head. There's no philosophical argument in this, there's no "maybe in the future it will open the possibility to alternative UIs".
No, it's all about being able to run a webserver from the phone, no joke. - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -4/+4I prefer the Linux shell over Mobile OS X.
- mrsteveman1, on 11/29/2008, -1/+1It will be quite a while before something ready to use that can meet or rival the native OS will even be an option, and even then i doubt most users are going to care.
- goerg, on 11/29/2008, -2/+2wish the would finally crack the simlock...
- MasterQ, on 11/29/2008, -1/+1yes.
