- sl123000, on 12/08/2007, -2/+38Don't you just love the sweet sweet irony the "Slide to Unlock" lever takes on now?
- method77, on 12/08/2007, -0/+17Open source is always good. All we need now is Apple's SDK announcement and we are all set.
For those saying, "Apple will be able to see how it's unlocked and fix it"... Be real. They already know how they do it. - Jholder112233, on 12/08/2007, -1/+12They have announced an SDK.. It's coming in February.
- Heembo, on 12/08/2007, -3/+13Uh huh. When hell freezes over? Processing power, ram and storage does NOT fly out of Steve Jobs ass like you think....
- Lanage, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5Download link:
http://devteam-anysim.googlecode.com/files/anysim_ ... - SSUK, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5It does allow them to, however they've been re-locking phones through firmware upgrades anyway... So they must know what they're doing to unlock the phones anyway.
- AndrewWiggin, on 12/08/2007, -1/+5Can anyone explain how this doesn't allow Apple to simply work around the unlock? (note: I am not hating, just asking what this means)
- bigbird, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Just for some general FYI for those out of the loop, basically all phones that were released after week 45 of this year have a new bootloader which is version 4.6. This bootloader(as opposed to the original) does not allow for you to downgrade the baseband, only upgrade. So the Ipod Dev Team is unable to figure a way to unlock the new out of the box 1.1.2 phones with this new bootloader. Basically the only way to "unlock" an iphone right now is to jail brake it and then to use a turbosim or turbo sim clone. The easiest turbo sim clone looks like the stealthsim made by iphone hellas. It requires only a small cut in your original sim, and no sim programming. They are a bit pricey though, at 90 us and 25 bux shipping to the states or canada, but if you live in the GTA(where I do) you can get it from there distributer in mississauga and not pay the shipping. So yep, if your getting an iphone for christmas that you want to unlock, I would either look into bladox's turbosim or the stealthsim. Im going with the stealthsim, cause its a hell of a lot easier, and I dont have to wait.
- MacDaddyMac530, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Well Im using the software right now and its kinda a pain because if you turn off the phone or take out the sim you have to relock and then unlock it. If I could change one thing it would be how you get the sim out. Why do you need a paper clip. its such a pain if ur traveling. ahh
- Jholder112233, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Well really, the big guy won. With the Tiff exploit in safari patched there is no way to even get the app on there...
- manitoba98xp, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2No, an announcement for an announcement would be "We're going to announce something."
However, that being their first official acknowledgment of it, it qualifies as the announcement. In February would be its release or demonstration or preview or whatever. - dansmeek, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2for those asking about anysim....
anysim is an iphone app. to run 3rd party apps, you first must jailbreak your iphone. there are many tutorials on how to do it. (basically download a program that does it, through an internet website, or through terminal). then you can install anysim. anysim will unlock the phone for iphone versions 0.0.0 - 1.1.1. It does *not* work for 1.1.2 which is why they are releasing the source code finally (in hopes that someone not on the devteam will figure it out).
So yes, you can use an iphone on any network that uses a simcard such as TMobile. But you will have to be using firmware version 1.1.1. It's very easy to downgrade firmwares... although from what i read, the UK iPhones shipped with something modified making the downgrade more difficult.
When you use anysim, all you do is open the app, and slide that lock (as you see in the screenshot). The phone performs a few operations, and bam, your phone now is "unlocked" and can work on TMobile. Everything will work except for visual voicemail. And obviously, the phone still only supports the Edge network. - ZephyrNinety, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Heembo
"Seeing as we are unfamiliar with sarcasm, I shall close the register at this point." - happyseamonster, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2If you drive a car that doesn't break, don't you share that info? Are you stupid? Ever hear of "word of mouth"?
- childprey, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3He said running them, not running them well.
- TomFrost, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1The liberal use of periods totally makes you worth listening to. Fight the good fight!
- nimish, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2
Actually, it's not irony since what is happening is exactly what you would expect: unlocking. http://m-w.com/dictionary/irony - method77, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2I know that. I meant actually announce it. That was an announcement for an announcement
- DMCer, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1This has got to be the nerdiest title I've seen on a submission in a while. Well done, sir! It just needs a few exclamation points.
- deose, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1If I have an unregistered iPhone, that all I can do is make 'emergency calls' on, do I just upload this, and it will then let me access the main screen and use a different provider? I can't find the info or the how to on anysim anywhere.
- darlyn, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Tip: don't update your firmware ...
- seventoes, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Interesting and well thought out argument. Great job... hanah montana?....

- GeekyGerge, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1If you wanted to at least pretend you are a popstar, at least learn how to spell your own name
- airj1012, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Yes, I kind of agree. Won't this make it easier/quicker for Apple to find how the open source exploits their software causing Apple to update firmwares quicker and more frequently? To be honest it seems like this would benefit Apple more so. The iPhone Dev Team has now become the bug testers for Apple.
- happyseamonster, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Yes... (t-mobile in the US)
- TomFrost, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2Dugg for being the only person I've ever seen use the word "Irony" correctly on Digg!
- SPECOPS, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Sure there is, just revert back to an older firmware, exploit, and use sys links when upgrading - just like before. When they 100% disable the ability to backdate to an older firmware, that's when you have to worry about it.
- gjscds, on 12/08/2007, -3/+31. It hasn't ended. 2. The little guy didn't "win". With the release of the code, Apple can review the code and break it w/ 1.3.

- counterplex, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2OK for someone who doesn't really follow this in a lot of detail, does this mean I can use an iPhone with carriers other than AT&T if I have a SIM for that carrier?
- kbro, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1I agree. This is one situation where being open is counter-productive.
- happyseamonster, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0In order for Apple to re-lock it, the user would have to chose to do an update through iTunes. You don't HAVE TO do an update. You could wait until there's an unlock that deals with that new update, then you would do the update followed by the new unlocking. (am I getting this right? Anyone...?)
- happyseamonster, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0They wouldn't put millions of non-unlockers through all those unnecessary updates for that purpose. (just the necessary updates) Also, an iPhone user doesn't have to do the update.
- therealcheney, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0Download one of the many programs that will activate it without itunes. Jailbreak it. Download AnySim from the installer.
- pyrates, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1Which they will undoubtedly to restrict the kind of applications you can run on the iPhone. Skype anyone? I don't see how they will ever let that run officially. It undermines at&t's business model since Apple insists on at&t providing an unlimited data plan. With skye's $30 a year unlimited long distance plan, at&t would lose a lot of revenue. They won't let that happen. Same thing for the reason why you can't put your own ring tones on the iPhone. It's to protect at&t's business model.

- ZephyrNinety, on 12/08/2007, -12/+7Give it a year and the iPhone will be running Garage Band, iPhoto, and Adobe Premier Pro

- Wander2000, on 12/08/2007, -7/+1This is great news. The cat & mouse game just ended; and the little guy won.
- MrViklund, on 12/08/2007, -14/+2Apple should sue them.
