- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Grow up. They spent time and used their ingenuity to solve a problem, and then profited from their work.
Due to the incentive of profit, this team developed the software first. Without profit incentive, many things you enjoy today would never have been created. This even extends to great works of art.
I find it amusing that people are quick to pile on this team, yet they find no problem in iPhone Dev Team climbing on their shoulders to essentially steal the ideas they created to solve the problem, to release it for free. You might feel differently if you spent many hours figuring out how to do something. - CasaMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Sep 11 20:38:51 [geohot] guest184, keep explaining
Sep 11 20:39:30 [geohot] a0020410 is blank in the loader
Sep 11 20:39:36 [guest184] and if there NOTHING in flash file at that position - i repeat - that is IMHO - it accepts flashfile is valid
Sep 11 20:39:49 [guest184] of course, flash must be erased too
Sep 11 20:39:49 [geohot] wow, thats a big bug - kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16In case some of you didn't know, Geohot was the 17 year old boy who first was the first to hardware unlock his iPhone. He got a car and a couple of new iPhones for the effort. This is basically the same method, the flashing of the baseband is just done in software instead of with hardware.
- PabloMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Pardon me; is this the line for free iPhone unlocks?
- thesutex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10that is pretty awesome.. there are some smart people in the hacking community..
- idean360, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10This is taking too long I was supposed to have my unlock code ready this morning... ***** iPSF never uploaded my IMEI...
- Dohko_Xar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10You waste $100 when you don't learn to be patient.
- brutimus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Maybe they'll get $20 back.
- xryy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Sucks that IPSF got way too much $ out of this situation.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yes, me too. I paid $50 for an unlock from iPhoneWorldWideUnlock.com and they have provided the software but it doesn't work because my number isn't on some list?
What the *****? This is TWENTY OH SEVEN. It's probably about five lines of code to automatically send the numbers to another place. - kris33, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4A couple of IRC chans full of live action right now:

#iphone.unlock - SPECOPS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3@ThatsUnpossible - you talk a lot of talk; Have you even fathomed the fact that this profiting outfit used the tools developed by the iPhoneDevTeam to get their code on the Iphone in order to do more work? I didn't think so. So who is standing on who's shoulder's now?
- Coded1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you know that these hacks don't last long, do you really think the devel team doing this on their own time would hang up their keyboards if the price was 'affordable'?
They shoulda charged more, its not like they were selling food to the hungry these trendy kids had $600 to buy the thing and almost 100/month to connect it, I don't really feel that sorry for them. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yep, this is how capitalism works.
- risotto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I can confirm: it works! You still need to have an ssh server installed on your phone and login to the phone. Stop the CommCenter daemon and then dump the rom of the baseband using NORDumper and get the FLS file from Apple's firmware image . Don't forget to chmod 700 the iUnlock executable and off you go! Don't forget to restart the CommCenter daemon...
- incognit0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Considering it's already a phone, it's not really all that important
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Not a lot of trouble for "everybody"
Just all the mindless consumer drones that need to buy the latest thing THIS VERY MINUTE.
Wait, let the wrinkles get ironed out, then invest your money. I want an iphone or Touch as bad as anyone else, but I didn't get suckered into this early adopter *****. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3it's called capitalism. noone is forcing you to buy it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iPhone was $600 a few days ago. Now it's $400. People bought them before and after the price drop. What does this prove? You price your product at what you think is an appropriate level. If people think they are getting value for money, they will buy.
It's the same here. They're charging money for it and it appears people are buying. It's a big risk - I'm sure the people who developed it wouldn't have bothered with their effort if they couldn't sell it at the end. They might have quit their day jobs or made other sacrifices to do so. The product is selling.
You do not have to buy it. It's not the law and I don't know if you have noticed but stupid and annoying people get rich all the time. - ae92, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Basic economics... if they can't sell 4 times as many unlocks at $25 than they can at $100 then why bother?
- geekoid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's BEEN UNLOCKED!!!! Free!!! Check out the dev website.
- ubpsanity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually that is what they are selling them for. It started at $36 and went down from there depending on the quantity you bought. Not sure of the exact pricing, or even if $25 was the lowest price.
- ubpsanity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nope, going over his post, he wrote "for example VoIP for iPhone?"
But then again, this story is about "iPhone Dev Team one step away from free unlock", is the the iPod Touch even locked to begin with? And to what carrier since it isn't even a phone? :-) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh *****, then AGAIN, I don't ***** know why users digg down double posting. We all know that this is bug of the new comment system. I say we should digg up the second comment so our voices get heard.
- pengas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1UNLOCKED BABY!
Can't wait to try it out myself... - Coded1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh yee of little faith .... wireless, usb ... possibilities ;)
- ubpsanity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, you never know, the headset connector may be the same, and people can use the earbud with microphone that comes with the iPhone. Or other ones that actually fit the ear without causing pain.
- bloaty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1NO, That's a good idea! Why are you digging him down!?
iPhone + $20 pan with unlimited data + Vonage = Awesome!
iPhone - AT&T + Wifi + Vonage = Pure Awesomeness!!! - tc811, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3or $200 in the case of early iPhone adopters
- nunomartins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Do you think the iphone has a killer design?? check this out http://www.digg.com/apple/Review_ColorWare_iPhone_paint_job
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I don't see any problem with charging for being the first to find a solution, the upside for them is they get a few bucks but the downside is that looking back Geohot will get more accolades and more respect from this than the other group did by charging - as will the fre sim unlocking people, even though at this point they really are kind of copying other people's work. If they were more willign to go for money than fame, so be it.
What I think is uncool are the people working on unlock servers, I just don't think it's very fair to target small developers with piracy like that. - ae92, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3No kidding... not everyone lives in their parents' basement for free... I think it's great that people are working on unlocking it for free but for those who couldn't wait, the paid unlock from IPSF is a great deal.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why shouldn't they get money for it? They figured it out and now these guys are just reverse engineering their solution.
- viccyran, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Nah, you waste 300.
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1And incase you meant VoIP phone for the iPod Touch.... well, it has no microphone. Good luck with that.
- gargantuan, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I concour. The only soloace is that their free ride didn't last too long.
- ubpsanity, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1that would be a great app, I'm sure it's being worked on. An actual Skype client for the iPhone would be good.
- MrViklund, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1AT&T and Apple have made an agreement and I think that people should respect that. But it seems like it's a sport to hack every Apple product.
- Enuratique, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0Looks like some intrepid Diggers read my comments from a few days ago :P
http://digg.com/apple/iPhoneSIMfree_begins_fulfilling_bulk_orders_apparently_will_not_unlock_end?t=8939576#c8939576 - arthurk, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3hacking is great. but what about some innovative software for iphone? for example VoIP for iPhone?
- lisapham, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1Sucks for those people who bought the $99 unlock software, what a slap in the face! This iPhone thing is causing a lot of trouble for everybody!
- NsinU8, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1If the Iphonesimfree people werent so greedy and charged say $25 to unlock the phone nobody would really be anticipating this as much. Greedy bastards..... Steve Jobs cant issue a credit to the early adopters of this one.
- gargantuan, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1double post, sorry.
