- jrm125, on 06/28/2009, -5/+63Apple and free market have never been synonymous.
- sheetrock, on 06/28/2009, -31/+81THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH APPLE IS THAT IT HAS TO CONTROL EVERYTHING. THEY MOVE THEIR OS TO INTEL HARDWARE TO SAVE MONEY, BUT LOCK IT DOWN TO RUN ONLY ON APPLE-BLESSED MOTHERBOARDS. THEY WON'T LET YOU GET YOUR MUSIC BACK OUT OF YOUR IPOD. NOW IT'S TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE TO RUN A COMMODORE 64 EMULATOR ON YOUR PHONE BUT NOT KOSHER BECAUSE IT BREAKS AN ARBITRARY RULE?
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU APPLE? YOU USED TO BE COOL.
(POSTING IN CAPS IN TRIBUTE TO BILLY MAYS, AND THE APPLE I) - loconet, on 06/28/2009, -5/+39Since when was has the App Store had a free market spirit? Are they serious?
- Joshislong, on 06/27/2009, -6/+35Seems a bit hypocritical of apple to block that app, but allow Safari, which grants access to rule 34.
- footbag01, on 06/28/2009, -4/+26Apple has no free market spirit. You have to buy Apps through their store. Don't get me wrong, I have an iPhone, but the jail-braking option is looking better every day. Especially given AT&T's recent screw-ups.
- puppyoneb, on 06/28/2009, -7/+25Porn puts people in sticky situations. That's a chance we're willing to take Apple.
- amorrise, on 06/28/2009, -3/+14Nice work apple, now stop allowing really stupid apps
- turpenine, on 06/28/2009, -5/+16dug for billy mays, buried for being an idiot.
- Screwy1138, on 06/28/2009, -0/+8I hate the caps, for any reason, but you're right. Apple has extreme monopolistic practices. If they start to get much more market share, the EU and the US DOJ is going to beat them really hard.
- lolwatermelon, on 06/28/2009, -0/+8sbsettings is worth the jailbreak.
- jrm125, on 06/28/2009, -1/+8I've jailbroken mine...was the best decision I could've made. More apps, more options, none of this being locked in BS.
- larrimer7, on 06/28/2009, -0/+6Agreed. It's habitual now, I upgraded to 3.0 and found myself swiping the top bar with nothing coming down.
- LinuxPerson, on 06/28/2009, -1/+6BILLY MAYS HERE, JUST WANTED TO SAY THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT! HEAVEN IS KILLER!
- AzzidReign, on 06/28/2009, -12/+17WHY DID ONLY ONE OF YOU PAY TRIBUTE TO BILLY MAYS? GOOD JOB SHEETROCK , YOU'RE A TRUE PATRIOT.
HOWEVER, THE REST OF YOU ARE COMPLETE ASSTARDS. - superkendall, on 06/28/2009, -1/+6In case you had not noticed tons of iPhone apps are free too. And it's not Apple that sets prices but developers.
- Jrr6415sun, on 06/28/2009, -0/+5they didn't have sex before the 21st century
- masterkenobi, on 06/28/2009, -3/+7it.......it was a ghost!
- superkendall, on 06/28/2009, -2/+6I remember back when the iPhone could only do web apps. Remember how much everyone hated that, and cried out for Apple to produce a real SDK?
The Pre is in a better situation since you can do some things through a Javascript API. But the range of apps will be more limited. - jjesusfreak01, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4Was waiting for someone to mention that...
- jrm125, on 06/28/2009, -3/+7uh like...the video cam app that suddenly got added to the 3GS yet somehow miraculously works on my year old 3G?
It isn't about illegality at all. It's about having overly-tight control over something so they can slowly peddle out features, charge more, and act like it's some upgrade that's the second coming. - abeewon, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4that is fancy piece of assumption. let me guess you wear khakis three days a week and hate your wife? some people just like different things. am im a sucker for a chick with a sleeve. as far as pornography goes suicide girls is fairly tasteful.
- jrm125, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3I don't believe I stated any of that....
- TheYoshi, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4People seem to forget that they don't HAVE to buy an iPhone, the very definition of free market is that companies are free to use their IP and innovations to try to defeat their competitors based on whether or not consumers "vote" with the wallets on their products.... thus far I'd say Apple's doing pretty well in that regard.
Killing free market is when the government gets involved and forces selections upon the consumer.... you know, like exactly what's going on every day with this administration. - superkendall, on 06/28/2009, -1/+4Get the iPhone and jailbreak it. Problem solved.
- morcheeba, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3The emulator rule isn't arbitrary. It's there to protect their control. Without it, I could open Morcheeba's Ap Store -- just download my free ap from the itunes store, and it'll allow you to install anything on the phone, bypassing everything - from their 30% cut, to quality controls, to their ability to pull offensive content.
- almalax19, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3So you would rather get a phone with ***** coverage than not be able to download a porno app for your phone...
I think you have bigger problems than what phone to choose. Stop worrying about it and maybe you will have more time to find a girlfriend! - chikmag777, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3I had to close the digg bar to get past the ad.
- stuffradio, on 06/28/2009, -0/+3Apple: I'm still cool!
- stuffradio, on 06/28/2009, -2/+5YES THERE IS
- SkippyBiffles, on 06/28/2009, -6/+9IS YOUR BABY A PAIN IN YOUR ASS? DO YOU JUST WANT TO SHAKE THE DAMN THING? HI BILLY MAYS HERE WITH ANOTHER GREAT APP; THE BABY SHAKER. ***** GOOD TASTE, APP STORE DEVELOPERS ARE HERE TO SATISFY YOUR DEEPEST NEEDS FOR SATISFACTION.
- merreborn, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2The new firmware is supposed to include parental controls.
http://gizmodo.com/5239720/why-iphone-30s-parental ... - Khast, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Well, if you want to install things which haven't been "tested" completely, that is a risk you are willing to take. iPhone OS is much like a computer OS....hell, it IS a computer.
I can see some of the protection that Apple is giving it's user base, which if they had allowed certain protocols on the iPhone, it would easily become a target for viruses. (Which is why Java, and Flash, or any other programming language isn't allowed.)
I'm not going to say I totally agree with their decisions, but some of them are logical to uphold the customer experience. - stuffradio, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2DOOOO ITTTT
- Asrrin29, on 06/28/2009, -6/+8Apple Apps Store has never been free market. every app must be pre approved, apple gets a percentage of the earnings, the SDK is locked down tighter then an overbear father's virgin daughter, and there are no apps allowed that compete with apple products. oh AND you have to pay a fee just to join the app store!
- mysql101, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3They already have parental controls built into v3.
- wlmafia, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2THE ONLY PROBLEM I SEE HERE IS A LACK OF ALL CAPS DAY OBSERVANCE. YOU HEARTLESS MONSTERS.
- sdipaola, on 06/28/2009, -2/+4free market - what a joke - it is the quintessential example of anti free market.
It would be akin to a car marker, only letting you buy their gas and going on their toll highways. using other gas (software) would be jail breaking and going on other's highways (internet access) is unlocking and using your own carrier. Whats more they would charge you double for gas at times ( teethering where you have to pay extra to use the bandwidth that you already bought). And forget about buying other brands tires (opera, flash) or thinking you could go under the hood yourself (no open internet file downloading or usb storage). freemarket ??? - crombat, on 06/28/2009, -3/+5rule 34 on the app store?
- Domthedude001, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2DO IT NAOW!
- Thomasaka, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3Buried for using "Apple" and "free market spirit" in the same sentence. Regardless of whether you love or hate Apple, they have never supported any type of free market.
- morcheeba, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2ultrafez - The SDK has been sandboxed pretty well from the start. That's where jailbreaking got it's name - apps run in a "chroot jail" that prevents them from seeing files outside their directory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroot
p.s. love your user name! - LinuxPerson, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PUT THIS APP ON CYDIA.
- stuffradio, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Whoever is burying me is stupid. Look in the App store and there is a rating system for the Apps. It says things like 4+ or 17+ or infrequent nudity etc. etc.
Learn2Research - morcheeba, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3Nothing you do to your phone should require reinstalling the OS to fix it. That's a horrible user experience.
- AzzidReign, on 06/28/2009, -1/+3JUST DO IT!
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I don't like artificial software "sandboxes" set up by hardware companies, that limit functionality and open source development for the sake of inflated profits. I won't buy an iphone.
- deadbaby, on 06/29/2009, -1/+3No one in the real world actually cares about this issue at all.
- Rekutyn, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2The thing is that Apple can't claim plausible deniability or safe harbor status since they themselves claim to be reviewing and approving what is allowed there. If it truly was a "free market" and allowed any application to be posted, then they wouldn't have this problem and could claim to be non-liable in the event an app containing illegal content was posted. They sorta created this problem for themselves.
- supergeek13579, on 06/28/2009, -0/+2I don't know why they people want porn apps, they have safari, just suck it up and do a Google search.
- TheBigBad, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1nope.
