- WiseWeasel, on 09/30/2008, -0/+49Apple just fixed this problem by sorting apps by date first released instead of date last updated. Done.
- fluidfoundation, on 09/30/2008, -5/+54Hmm.... app developers are the gamers?
Last I checked, we're the ones who paid $99 to even submit our apps for a $199 (for some $599) device into a system that should allow the buyers to determine the worthiness while Apple takes 30% off the top? Don't get me wrong, the above terms are ok with me, if we pay apple to participate, let the users figure out if they think our apps are worth it.
Leave it a little more to the decision of the people buying the apps, you'll have less people trying to find work arounds.
*That being said, if I see another ***** fake lighter application added to the store, I'm going to ***** an apple brick. - DivisibleByZero, on 09/30/2008, -0/+24Every update I've seen to the google mobile app has "minor enhancements to revision number" listed as one of the changes made in that release. Comedy gold.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -2/+23What is this CrackerPat?! You ***** up. I didn't see one faceplant in this article.
- streak, on 09/30/2008, -0/+17The problem is with the review system Apple provides. No way to sort apps by updated date anymore. No dates on the reviews. People can't post comments--like telling us about a better program available amongst the myriad of apps that are for sale--without rating the program. Developers can't post replies to comments. And now people can't even post comments unless they've paid for an inferior program.
- crash331, on 09/30/2008, -0/+15They still havn't fixed the worst form of gaming.
Devs will release crappy apps as free so they get tons of downloads, and then switch them to paid apps. They retain their download count (for some stupid reason) and show up in the #1 or #2 spot in most popular paid apps. People then think "Hey, it must be good, tons of people bought it" when actually no one bought it.
If an app switches from free to paid, the download counter needs to be reset. - sickanimations, on 09/30/2008, -9/+23Anybody seen that old Apple ad with Orwellian dictator on that big screen, and then 'Apple' comes smashes the screen to free the civilians? It's funny how quickly and radically things change.
Apple 1984 - http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OYecfV3ubP8 - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -10/+20It's time for Apple to clean house... ban them all!
- bigsteve, on 09/30/2008, -0/+8Yea, this is now a non-issue, a little late, there, hothardware.
- MacParrot, on 09/30/2008, -2/+8There's no way to please everyone. As the article states, many devs were pushing near useless updates just to get on the front page again. Many people were also posting negative reviews of apps they didn't have to push their own (so now you can't review unless you own the app).
As far as getting attention for your own iPhone app or for publishing news about an update, contact the site owners for some of the iPhone websites out there like appminute.com, iprong.com, iphonealley.com ect. - nickels, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7Facebook just released a major upgrade!!! YAY
Apple is pushing their developers to make apps for Android. I love my iPhone, but it is maddening to see Apple rejecting useful apps left and right for no good reason. They need a clear set of rules, and stop pushing the devs around like trash. They are making Apple some good money with these apps, and Apple should respect that more. They are getting like 30% for doing nothing.
Soon there will be nothing good in the app store and you'll need to jailbreak your phone to get anything worth while. - robbob, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5da free Zippo app always crashes before its lit.
- visarya, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4will it run crysis
- Chrelion, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3I like Apple products, and tend to swear by the brand in most cases. But this whole situation is leaving a bad taste even in my mouth and that's saying a lot.
That said, is there any word on something like an iPhone running the Android OS? - morphinapg, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3How can they post about a better program if they've never tried this one at all? What if this oe is really better than the one they think is? People need to try an app before criticizing it.
- ddfall, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3And for God's sake, let Qik into the App Store!!! (http://www.qik.com)
- dragonzmajic, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4It never really mattered. If you checked the all free apps page for the most recent (and new updates) every day then it would just be less than a page worth of stuff to go through anyways! If you skipped an app before you could skip it again, however, some really do nee updates after they are released!
- AndrewWiggin, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I know your point isn't about this, but Apple isn't doing nothing to make that 30%. They're providing the hosting, reviews, built in audience, software, and everything that developers need to get their apps out to millions of people instantly. Apple probably isn't making much profit in this, just like they don't make much profit from selling music, but it makes their product better which helps to ramp up the hardware sales which is why they do it.
- Hush, on 09/30/2008, -4/+6Well I just did watch it and all I can say is wow, did you see the chick with the hammer, her boobs bouncing?
- raynar, on 09/30/2008, -2/+4fast development? For the iphone? surely you jest...
- brundlefly76, on 09/30/2008, -2/+4Its true Apple is the new Microsoft but FAR worse.
I would like to see an example of where Microsoft insisted that they were the only entity which could distribute third-party applications, tax every single copy sold, reject any given app at will, delete apps remotely at will and prohibit developers from even talking about anything related to development.
There are books which have already been written about how to develop iPhone apps using the official SDK which are in limbo, as the authors are afraid Apple will sue them for publishing a book teaching people to program.
On the Amazon page for 'iPhone Developer's Cookbook':
"Note: This title will be released as soon as Apple lifts the NDA on the iPhone SDK."
The Apple iPhone SDK situation is the worst precedent in the history of software development - and to a large degree net neutrality.
What would we do if next year, the next release of OSX could only install desktop apps through iTunes store, and Apple took 'a little off the top' of every sale, and rejected apps they didn't like? - brundlefly76, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2salomejones...
I am a 42 year old iPhone software developer, former Yahoo! producer and engineer, and have owned a profitable software company in California for the past 7 years.
Why you think I'm a 15 year old selfish kid from my argument, I have no ***** clue whatsoever, unless you are some crotchety 70 year old ***** who just trolls comment boards looking to tell kids how hard his walk to school was when he was a kid.
Apple is not allowing people to disucuss software development with each other, and taxing all iPhone software - yes, this is the worst precedent in software development. I don't understand how anyone would frame that fact as 'selfish'. - basye, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Yes, this is true.
- SlpingInsomniac, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3Hey! It's kind of like the United States. Except, the change was more gradual from 1777.
- nesagwa, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3Maybe Apple should turn their review process into something like Xbox LIVE's.
Month long testing processes and stringent guidelines so all apps have a consistent experience throughout and no system crashing bugs.
Im sure people would whine even more. - JohnnyDIGGme, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I have both versions.
- dalittle, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1The only problem with that is that they are also charging the people who buy the phones. So are they making money on the hardware or software? It certainly looks like greedily both. They are making a lot of money on the software or they would not make such a big deal about rejecting apps that compete with Apple. Apple does not get it and they will drive the developers away ... again.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3Hey, just wanted to reply to say how cool I think you are for spelling Microsoft as M$. I also wanted to... oh sorry, Windows is updating again. BRB.
- shutaro, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3Heh... You said boobs.
- AndrewWiggin, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1It's pretty stupid to say something is an inferior product without having used it and only looked at the specs. Just take a look at the iPhone compared to some of the high end nokia phones or some blackberries. Sometimes it's not the specs that do it, but the user friendliness that makes it a great product. I just can't believe you're trying to promote being able to review apps without having bought them.
- brundlefly76, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1You're wrong - this *IS* new.
Apple, Microsoft, and (especially) Linux do not force any third parties to use them as the sole distributor of their product, much less tax them - this is *totally new*. Neither do any of those platforms accept and/or reject applications ad-hoc, or have the technical capability to remove software from user's computers at will at their discretion - this is ALL NEW.
You are also wrong in that you believe it will not change.
In the beginning, Apple didn't even want third-party apps, but they acknowledged user demand. I honestly believe that it is just a matter of time and public outrage that Apple will yield some of its draconian App Store policies as well.
I don't know about you, but when I have to work in a ***** up system, I argue for change. I guess you just take your ball and go home. That's entirely your choice, but don't tell people to shut up or call them adolescents for being the agents of change.
When I worked at Yahoo!, I spent a lot of time in the mobile division, working directly with Verizon, Sprint, Nokia and Motorola. I realized the 'walled gardens' these companies would grow to secure revenue streams were making developing a good mobile internet experience impossible...
I was excited when I heard Apple had broken down this wall with AT&T, and even more excited when they launched the public SDK. BUt now it is very clear that Apple broke down the walled garden of the carrier and built it right back up around itself. - fluidfoundation, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Do you make a habit of missing the point entirely?
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3My first app was finished in a single day. The second was a week and a half.
Other than some games, I cannot think of a single app in the app store which should have taken a single person more than a single month to write.
I'm not sure why I'm being dug down for my original reply, by the way. There are no untruths in it.
Has digg really devolved into the same group of whiners that eventually overtake all interesting aggregation sites? - kajoob, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Yes, let's ban shrewd developers because Apple's app store functions as if it were built with duct tape and chicken wire.
- streak, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Some programs are obviously inferior to others just from their feature lists and/or price. Furthermore, information about alternatives doesn't have to say "hey, this other program is better" but could say "hey, there are alternatives." Why shouldn't someone be able to post a comment without having to rate the program? Why aren't postings dated?
- Cloud7659, on 09/30/2008, -6/+6Hulk SMASH!!!
- DRock4776, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1Has anyone noticed that the app. store link to the all free apps page is gone? Sucks.
- jakatak, on 09/30/2008, -3/+3there is no reason not to allow flash and qik. I can't understand why Apple has to be so controlling. This greedy controlling mentality is what made them #2 to Microsoft in the 80's.
- inactive, on 10/01/2008, -1/+1You can ***** off.
- streak, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1"There's no way to please everyone."
Ah, but you can please almost everyone by providing software that's more flexible. - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -1/+1The reason I think you're a 15 year old selfish kid from your argument is because you're arguing just like a 15 year old selfish kid. Apple has utter control over their platform, and for someone who's been in the business for as long as you claim you have, you should understand by now that this is nothing new, and that it will never change.
And, yes---if you sell your software via the Apple Store, they take a cut. I know you don't really get it so much, probably because you worked at Yahoo for too long (a company still, after all these years, in search of a product), but "distributors" get to take a cut of "product". It's kinda been like that since Romulus and Remus.
And, it seems to me that a worse software precedent was set by Bill Gates, when he forced IBMs hand and kept the copyright for PC-DOS out of their hands, insuring Microsoft's bloody thumbprint on everything that's happened in the software world since--either as a reaction to, or result of their action.
So really, maybe you should go whine to Gates. He's the one who has everyone convinced that software is "intellectual property". - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -4/+3WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
- MAGZine, on 09/30/2008, -4/+3It's the worst when Apple sends you invoices for the free programs that you 'purchase'.
I'm too cheap to actually spend money on apps, so it's really annoying. - gamelord12, on 09/30/2008, -2/+1To sum up that article: all the iPhone's software problems could be solved by making everything FOSS. They didn't say it outright, but the developers are motivated by greed rather than functionality.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -3/+2"the worst precident in the history of software development"...
Pardon me for saying so kiddo, but those of us who remember the web before Ajax (and indeed, life before the web itself) know that you're spraying a bunch of ***** here.
I know you kids need to have something to complain about, but maybe you could move away from your computers for a few minutes and take a look around you...a lot of us are getting tired propping up your selfishness. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -4/+3So who made you buy an iPhone? What, there are no other phones? You just wanted to have something to whine about, didn't you. It's alright, you can tell me. I promise I won't tell anyone.
- NidStyles, on 09/30/2008, -4/+2Seriously is the iPhone that important that we need updates on it five times a day? I mean how many people here on Digg actually own one? We should have a poll.
