- ophello, on 04/08/2009, -9/+39I know that everyone always bitches at Apple for introducing products that lack key features, but are you people learning that Apple does, in fact, improve their products greatly over a short time and that this, combined with great customer service, is a good reason to buy their products? I'm getting really tired of the ***** arguments people use to justify their hatred for Apple.
- TokenBlack, on 04/08/2009, -1/+22Yeah, I am deciding right now between getting an iPhone and a Pre (I'm Verizon, so either way I'd have to terminate my contract. ***** you BB Storm) and I think 3.0 is the dealbreaker I've been looking for to get the iPhone. The two advantages I now see are the 16 GB over the 8 GB for the Pre, and the much much more established App Store, now that the whole copy and paste fiasco has been dealt with. I'm no Apple Fanboy, in fact I love my Zune 80, but the iPhone is definitely THE mobile phone to have, now that I've seen the 3.0 software,
- ballsmcgee, on 04/07/2009, -2/+17I like the way this is looking...
- ahpro, on 04/08/2009, -1/+13They should make most of the screen a big button for taking the picture. It's hard to click on the small button when you're taking a picture of yourself.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -3/+13I'm sure they'll do a good job, not many features but it will just work when you need it.
- Hazza, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10Compass thing could be cool...Might let streetview orient itself correctly so you can hold it up and have it turn as you turn.
- Ruefus, on 04/08/2009, -2/+11Apple unlike Microsoft and others, tends to focus on an initial, limited feature-set. That feature set is usually quite mature by the time it reaches consumers. What it does it does very well, even though its 'limited'. Then they build it out over time as they create other features. Or.... they just build in obsolescence.
Either viewpoint works, as does the business model Apple's currently using.
Windows CE/PocketPC/Windows Mobile is a prime example of the other side. Toss everything in but the kitchen sink, and have it all work fairly average, make excuses and keep promising a more beautiful tomorrow. - candlebougie, on 04/08/2009, -1/+9that´s only going to work with the new iPhones, right? Not for the current 3G-version...
- xsecretfiles, on 04/08/2009, -2/+8nah it's just the intro to the new 007 movie
- hardeep1singh, on 04/08/2009, -1/+6Well, technically you're right.
but in that case a Video camera hasn't been invented as yet. - Gibletoid, on 04/08/2009, -1/+6The buttons use a touchup method so when you lift your finger off of the button it snaps the finger. Touching the button only selects it.
Put your finger on the button, turn around phone, lift finger, camera goes snap. - WibWobble, on 04/08/2009, -1/+5Don't forget the childish crap Pre's spokesmen have came out with. :P
- championchap, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3It'll probably be both.
They'll turn the functionality off on the old handsets as the hardware won't be up to it. - Dannymacuk, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4come again?
- DelMonte, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4Do you know what's the resolution of the current 2 megapixel iPhone camera? 1600x1200... That's more than enough to record 640x480 (VGA) video. I don't understand why people, and well respected sites keep saying that the resolution of the camera is the problem here.
The current iPhones can record 320x240 at roughly 20 fps with some jailbreak apps. But the limiting factor is not the camera (especially not the megapixel rating), it's the lack of a dedicated video encoding chip. That means that all the encoding must be done in software, and the CPU is not fast enough to achieve good quality (.h264/MPEG-4) compression live at 640x480, and it would be extremely stressing for the battery even if it could.
" I don't see them offering anything more than a QVGA resolution with 15fps with its current hardware."
I don't see them offering video recording on current hardware period because of this. I'm pretty sure Apple won't settle for QVGA quality, hence will make video recording only on new hardware that will have a video encoding chip and/or faster CPU. - digitalpencil, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2oh for crying out loud..
CCD resolution isn't the primary factor in overall image quality. The reason why Nokia's cameras are good is because they use semi-decent glass rather than the milk bottle crap seen in almost every other manufacturer.
It'd be great if the iPhone bumped the res and replaced the lens but why do we need 5MP when no-one's going to be printing from it anyway.. It's about balancing the CCD speed against the res and who cares whether it's bigger than your monitor when it's only going to be reduced and uploaded to facebook anyway?
My DSLR's only 6MP and yeah there are occasions where i'd love some extra pixels but only when i'm blowing up to A3+. Most of the time it serves my purposes fine and I fail to see anyone using a camera-phone for print runs.. - Thumper13, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3YAY sanity.
I would be happy with a nice 2 MP camera on my phone that could shoot nicely at high iso's over any 3.2 or 5 MP.
That's what I have my D80 and all those fancy lenses for. - Radan, on 04/08/2009, -2/+4Again people, the resolution of the screen doesn't say anything at all about the picture quality. Stop using the amount of Megapixels as a tool to measure how good a camera is! The absolute majority of the people who use their mobile phones as primary camera doesn't need anything more than 2 MP (that is equivalent to Full HD that everyone throws around). The only reason that you would ever want more than that would be if you want to print out posters or do some serious post processing, but yet again, if you want to do that you should really buy yourself a real DSLR instead.
- DomZy, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3There's apps that let you use the screen as a button
- mrBitch, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3@ MerchantofPanic RE: "Agree. Apple leaves out key features... "
It looks like Apple's method of actually implementing features WHEN THEY WORK is actually selling more phones, since those phones just work far better than the "every feature we can think of" phones.
In fact, this is EXACTLY what a well known Japanese journalist who writes about the smartphone market in Japan states :
http://blog.nobi.cc/2009/02/my-view-of-how-iphone- ...
"... although Japanese phones have many fancy features and gimmick, the usability is so low and iPhone has so much potential here in the Japanese market.
... My cellular weapon of choice, of course,“ Hayashi wrote, ”is an iPhone... " - rnawky, on 04/08/2009, -2/+4Yes, upgrading your phones OS changes its physical state and a flash is created on the exterior of the phone.
- palmer, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Ugh, get over the lens-branding fraud. Remember when Bose sold out? Now their brand is worthless, found in crapware galore. Putting a Zeiss lens on a camera phone is surely lipstick on a pig. Any tiny increment in quality will be buried under the loads of noise. Noise is by far the biggest problem in camera phones and point-&-shoots. A clean 2 MP image will absolutely blow away the 5 MP garbage currently being troweled out.
- palmer, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1The real distinguishing factor is noise, not the lens nor the resolution.
- Angostura, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1"Explain why else Nokia has been by far the biggest seller of cameras in the world"
I bought a cheap Nokia phone, it had a camera in it. I didn't want a camera and have never used it. It came by default.
So one explanation would be: Nokia sell a *lot* of phones and each one has a camera whether you want it or not. - championchap, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1If I had anything to say about those things I'd have done so in my previous post.
We were talking purely about looks and Interface.
In which case I would wish the Arena only upon those who have commited a true crime against humanity.
Perhaps Russel Brand. - digitalpencil, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1we get it, you own a Nokia..
- bigsteve, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1It still wouldn't have been clever.
- Robustica, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Classy.
- jsmithers, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2Yeah, N95 is great. But N82 has better lenses, firmware and most importantly a Xenon flash.
- adorkable81, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2I have this [insert jailbreak feature here] application since [insert number] [day|months|years] ago
- ultimusgt, on 04/08/2009, -2/+2so theyre coming out with cycorder? just jailbreak your phone its easy and fun i have the fallout 3 pipboy theme on it awesome :D and if something happens just reset ;)
- mrBitch, on 04/08/2009, -1/+1@ Ruefus RE: " Either viewpoint works, as does the business model Apple's currently using.

Dug for "more beautiful tomorrow"... - DomZy, on 04/08/2009, -2/+2Just like touch screen phones are finally getting on par with the..oh wait...
- DomZy, on 04/08/2009, -1/+1I'm sure dev team or something will crack it so it recognises the current camera as the new one
- championchap, on 04/08/2009, -1/+1You're kidding right?
The UI is basically the same on the Arena.. just more square and cheap looking.
The hardware looks like a chinese knock off too. - hardeep1singh, on 04/08/2009, -2/+2Yeah and a front camera too.
- djmgpsp, on 04/08/2009, -1/+1Good to ok Web Browser
Maps
Media Player is vastly improved
Better Home Screen Layout than the iPhone
Stainless Steel body, wont ''crack'' will it?
Front Facing Camera IIRC
3.5mm Jack on Top
Expandable Memory
More open to develop for than the iPhone
Anything to say? - wijzewillem, on 04/08/2009, -5/+4Do you work for Nokia?
- jsmithers, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1While parent's argument is true in a big general sense, it's definitely not true when talking about 2MP vs 5MP, and a normal lens vs. a Carl Zeiss lens (as Nokia use). Numerous professional tests have shown that 5MP vs 2MP plus good lenses, plus good firmware, makes a VAST difference. Your statement just is not true in that context.
If we're talking 8MP vs. 10MP say, with equal lenses and firmware then fair enough. - jsmithers, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1Highly unlikely. A.) all the rumours I've seen say the 5MP is for another device and B.) no one in their right mind would have that config as for video conf you only need a much lower res - witness Nokia who have much lower res on the front camera - more just isn't needed.
- Carefullystaken, on 04/08/2009, -1/+0"Nearly everything the iPhone has".........."no app store"
does not compute - rattanhose, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1Ohhh wow, Thats great great, Thanks apple.
- digitalpencil, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1that's what she.. aw ***** it.
- RUFiO006, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1I shouldn't have forgotten the /s tag.
- ohreilly, on 04/08/2009, -3/+2I'm quite happy with the performance of my Nokia N95, in terms of imaging and everything else.
It's a phone worth the money, unlike the rubbish that Apple put out (since it lacks basic features, then makes a fanfare when it gets some of them) - crashlock, on 04/08/2009, -2/+1All I need now is a babe magnet!
^_^ - BenBenMan, on 04/08/2009, -5/+3Do most Digg users work for Apple?
- hardeep1singh, on 04/08/2009, -5/+3I don't know why they are burying you but Steve Jobs would've dugg you for reading his mind correctly if he was on digg.
