- Eisen4, on 06/25/2009, -3/+19What makes you think that the next Palm won't be faster and better than the current Pre? To think new phones won't be better than current gen phones just because of software availability is a bit ignorant.
- goeric, on 06/25/2009, -2/+18Each app loads about 5-10 seconds faster...max. If you have a 3G I really don't feel like it's worth $200 for that and a video camera.
But if you have a 1st gen I'd go for it. - PrometheusBorn, on 06/25/2009, -1/+15Damn. Why can't Apple offer free updates to phones that are now 2 years old and would've been obsolete by conventional standards. And why the heck aren't these iPhones competitive like the G1 or Pre? Apple is getting crushed in sales there.
Oh wait... - ps3me, on 06/25/2009, -3/+12lol ***** it, ill say it anyways, hows it run crysis?
- TexasShiv, on 06/25/2009, -3/+11Your wife seems like the sane one.
- doublsh0t, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7The bit comparing the framerate differences at the end interested me more so than the 5-7ish second differences in loading games, I'd like to see more detailed information about framerates soon. I found even the rendering of the MSNBC site more interesting than watching a half-dozen games load up slightly faster in the new version. Either way, even with this video, the results of which anyone could predict, I'm conflicted about upgrading but am pretty much leaning towards skipping the 3G S and upgrading next year.
- MacParrot, on 06/25/2009, -1/+8@yocouchdigga
We read it, it just didn't make any sense. Every iPhone made so far can be upgraded for free to the new OS. IS there newer hardware on the 3GS that the older ones didn't have? Yes. DOES Apple want you to buy a new one every time they come out with a new one? Duh...yes.
No phone running Android or the Pre OS is going to allow you to add hardware to keep the older phones up to date. Every hardware maker wants you to buy their new shinnies as often as possible because that's how they make money. - Andrewe1, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6I would like to see palm wait more than a year to release a new model......especially with the low 8GB capacity its got.
- ariez84, on 06/25/2009, -5/+11Pretty sure it means Suckers
- Darph.Bobo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Translation = You don't have the money.
- wonderchemist, on 06/24/2009, -5/+10No the S means Steve, as in JobS.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/25/2009, -12/+17"Suckers"
As in, you got suckered into buying a new phone and in another 9-12 months, they'll try to sucker you again. Meanwhile us open-source phone users will get free updates that keep our phones competitive and cost-effective. Thanks Android and Palm. ^.^ - MarkyBear, on 06/25/2009, -2/+7The iPhone software updates are free.
- Plopfish, on 06/25/2009, -2/+7Microsoft doesn't make phones, but for all competitors that do make phones, SINCERELY good luck with catching and surpassing iPhones since competition is good (for consumers)!
- thechilipepper0, on 06/25/2009, -1/+6$
- snareguy17, on 06/25/2009, -2/+6Well it's an improvement to say the least.
- MacParrot, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Yep, it was a fail. Just not in the way you might think. Tell me why again you stood in line for 2 hours? For a PHONE? I ordered it online, got it on the release date by noon. So you may have had one ahead of me by 2-4 hours. Whoop?
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Agreed. I had a an original, didn't upgrade to 3G when it became available (even though I could have) and I was fine with it. In fact, I had updated the OS on the original to 3.0 and everything worked rather impressively, sans the video capability and lack of compass (awwww....) naturally.
I do appreciate the greater speed on the 3GS, so the upgrade for me was good. Not sure I would spend the money to upgrade a perfectly working 3G though. And I would have had no problem going another year on the original 2G if I had to. - cthellis, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Big whoop is big.
- bds369, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Trogdor!
- AdmiralAcbar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3The S is for snake... I mean, dragon...
- r00fus, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Consummate V's!
- timf, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Wow.... even the clock is faster!
- TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+22G and 3G:
412 MHz processor
128 MB Ram
L1 Cache
3GS:
600 MHz processor
256 MB Ram
L1 Cache
L2 Cache
Clear winner ; ) and the extra cash isn't even that much. - Spamcan, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I went from an EDGE iPhone to the 3GS and I've got to say the performance increase is amazing. Not only do games load much quicker but issues like the frame rate chugging along in AquaForest or Zen ball in Peggle bringing the game to a halt have been cleared up. It's not perfect, the game Cue*Bert now crashes on startup, the splash screen in Galaga Remix doesn't go away making it unplayable and there are a few minor graphic glitches I've noticed but overall it's a welcome upgrade.
- MacParrot, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2If you're happy wit the phone you currently have, then yes wait for the next upgrade. I liked the other iPhones, but decided to wait until a 32GB model came out, so this is actually my first one. Restraint can be good.
- johnomaz, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I dont' know if there was a release of this specific tech spec, but is the storage memory faster too? I ask because I use iFunBox, both on my jailbroken 3G and my jailed 3GS and the 3GS has more than double the data transfer rate. On the 3G I get no more than 5 MB a second over USB, but with the 3GS, I've had up to 15MB a second. I store quite a bit of stuff on the 'general storage' portion of my iPhone and I have to say, its a really nice bump in speed. I have a feeling this is one of the keys to the faster performance to the 3GS. Faster read/write times of its memory in combination to the processor speed and more RAM.
- johnkemp, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3you beat me to it.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -1/+2yocouchdigga -- Your juvenile reference only tells me the market for the android.
To quote Denis Leary -- "Enjoy, *****!"
You'll always be playing catch up. - Twenty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1love speed only really ultimate
- uptill1, on 06/25/2009, -4/+5why are people so amazed that a 2 year old hardware got faster?
the 3g has the same processor and ram as the original iPhone, it haven't changed since it's launch.
come one enough with OMG ITS MUCH FASTER THE S REALLY STANDS FOR SPEEEEEEEEEED.
PS I've got an iphone 3g - kendawg, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1I don't have an iphone so I don't know what difference it makes, but the first thing I noticed was the 3G had 3 open tabs, while the 3GS had 2 open. Does that slow down the application loading?
- inactive, on 06/28/2009, -0/+1Always! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!!
- mysql101, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1Large apps can take quite a bit longer than 10 seconds to load on the 2g/3g vs 3gs. Smaller applications will have less discernible results.
- r00fus, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1You do realize that a line from ATT for a new iphone is not $9.99 (you're forgetting mandatory data at $30/mo).
- matt.rubin, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1i have better things to waste 80 bucks a month on
- mysql101, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1I'm inclined to say no. The 2g/3g iphone usually doesn't have enough ram to cache more than one page unless they're small. So if the user went back to the previous tabs, the phone would have to load it from scratch again.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Isn't this article about a week late?
- JTMON, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1It's really great that this clown has no idea about Notes syncing to outlook now...maybe KNOW the product before you make a wish list idiot.
- TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0You're just jealous. That's why you say that. I got my phone as an upgrade and what I paid, considering the apps, was a bargain.
- Brettb, on 06/25/2009, -1/+1I'm leaning that way too, in high hopes of a 5MP camera and some better battery life /w the 3GS additions as well..
- TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0I think the 3GS is an amazing phone! Taking videos, editing and then posting straight to YouTube! And ye of course everyone knows the "S" is for speed, -.- it's so obvious...
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -1/+1Don't need to ease my conscience. The iPhone rocks and will always lead in innovation.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -2/+2yocouchdigga -- You really must learn the difference between hardware and software.
Go ahead and get that Pre. And when a new one comes out in 6 to 12 months with a larger drive, processor and memory chip post back and let us know. - TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0I'm 19 and I can afford a 3GS, what's that say about you? Plus the iPhone has an app for almost anything so ye, it's worth it. So NOT getting it is borderline retarded.
- TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0Dude, just add a line for $9.99 then give you old phone and line to a friend and have them pay that. That's what I did.
- TheRealKrafty, on 06/25/2009, -0/+02G and 3G:
412 MHz processor
128 MB Ram
L1 Cache
3GS:
600 MHz processor
256 MB Ram
L1 Cache
L2 Cache
There ya go : ) - rjs090100, on 06/26/2009, -0/+0Then I guess I should run out and buy it because I might not be able to download every single app Apple releases. No thanks.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/25/2009, -2/+2macparrot (fitting name), okay, so you're telling me that if apple could have released a firmware update that would've turned the 3g's camera into a camcorder with the ability to upload to youtube and share videos, add auto-rotate, speed up processes, revamp messaging (among many other updates that Android's Cupcake Dev Branch rolled out), they would have? mpress, in 6-12 months, I'll overclock my phone and get a new 16gb SD, if necessary.
enjoy sucking jobs dick, I'll enjoy my android. -
