- loganisamonkey, on 07/11/2008, -10/+107There is so much unnecessary hype around this phone. It's the same phone as the first gen, but with 3G, GPS, and a new encasing. BIG DEAL.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to head to my AT&T store to go buy my iPhone 3G. - inactive, on 07/11/2008, -3/+31Why do people feel the need to constantly reevaluate the iPhone every other day of the week. Apple had me sold at Wide Screen iPod with touch screen controls. Everything else is just cake. I used to walk around with a cheap phone and a Video iPod and now I have one device. Just keep your expectations simple and you won't be disappointed.
- teh_spazz, on 07/12/2008, -6/+30Let me sum it up:
3G - Wooo.....
aGPS - Woooo...
Battery Life - Boo....
App Store - Wooo.... - darkmagus, on 07/12/2008, -3/+22I've been on my AT&T contract for a year and a half with no upgrades and they told me I have to wait another 3 months to get the $199 price. ***** *****.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+14I hate AT&T so ***** much
- Dtopler, on 07/11/2008, -6/+18I went to my local AT&T store around 9:00 this morning and saw a line of ~40 people. Turned my car right around. There's no way I'm waiting for two hours for a damn phone. Not really sure what I expected though...
- yokozuka, on 07/11/2008, -2/+13Oh come on, "The only review you are going to need"???
Christ. - mateo60, on 07/12/2008, -1/+11I doubt many people would be interested in watching a Treo unboxing video.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -1/+10People had EXACTLY the same complaints about XP when it first came out, but Vista is... wait a second. Did I walk into the wrong topic?
- mateo60, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Woah, slow down there. Would you simplify it a little more for me?
; ) - christof53, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7The new iPhone 3G! It's slightly faster...to the max!
- superkendall, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6The problem is, that Android is all potential right now, and no reality.
However if you've seen the two SDK's you'd realize the iPhone still has a good UI advantage. The Android system is still pretty good but is more a classical UI as we know it and not really built around touch the same way the iPhone SDK is. - PrometheusZero, on 07/12/2008, -3/+9I'll probably get buried for this, but I think Android phones have the potential to be a much better phone then the iPhone. What, with it being open source, whatever is on the iPhone, will most likely be re-created in some way or another (and perhaps even better) on Android. Don't get me wrong, I love my MacBook, but the open-ness and sheer customisation of an Android Phone > Apple polish on iPhone.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6The Linux community has used the same argument for years...
- superkendall, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5I don't know why you are being dugg down. I'd say that is *****, I'd call and ask to speak to some managers about that. Go on about how you're a loyal customer yada yada yada and I think you should be able to work them down.
- jakem1, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5Perhaps you should have thought of that when you signed up for the original contract. I still can't understand why anyone would lock themselves into a 2 or 3 year contract for a phone.
- digiguy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4You need to be on the iPhone plan to get the upgrade
- jakem1, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4True GPS isn't much good without a proper GPS application including turn by turn directions.
- Pake, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Conclusion of the review and every review thus far: It's the same damn iPhone, but now it has 3G...
- digiguy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4The activating is such a waste. The AT&T handheld ties the contract to your iPhone already. No need to activate again in the store, because when you get home and connect it to iTunes, it backs up and activate again anyway. Such *****. I know this because I was lucky to get to activate it home. The only thing it asked you is 1) New account 2) Backup. So it knows already.
- btschul, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6THE SERVERS ARE BACK ONLINE!!!!
- solidus636, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4I went around 7:30 and there were about 150 people in line for it. Luckily, my cousin was first in line so I didn't have to wait about 3 hours to find out that ATT wanted to charge me 400 for the iPhone because I had too many months left on my contract...
***** ATT. - mrtrik, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Successfully? Really? Maybe in your circle. But of the hundreds of people I work with, am related to, am friends with, I can't name a single person running linux, let alone being savvy enough to purchase a linux set up (never mind trying to set one up themselves).
Linux today is not for the masses. Period. No matter how much better it might be, how much this and that.. majority of people won't go for it. It has to prove itself as easy to use, supported, and easy to learn. That'll take a long time (if it ever happens). Hell - look at apple. Most people complain apple is "too simple" but it still isn't gaining much ground, even though you can walk into any mall in america and play around with a mac; it's on tv; etc. etc. - allyant, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4God why did I just renew my t-mobile contract for 18 months with a feww LG Viewty....
- AutoTom, on 07/11/2008, -4/+7Go straight to the video, its way better than reading 3 pages of stuff.
- mateo60, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3I downloaded it for free from Apple this afternoon. I believe Apple has killed the link though. The update was worth un-jailbreaking the thing.
- Tenoq, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3And then you'll complain the phone is too expensive because they have to pay those people. :p
- Dylson, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3....and I STILL can't download the damn iPod Touch 2.0
- danjwray, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I didn't mean successfully in terms of market share or ease of use. Look at the original context
"I'll probably get buried for this, but I think Android phones [read: Linux] have the potential to be a much better phone then the iPhone [read: Windows, OS X]. What, with it being open source, whatever is on the iPhone, will most likely be re-created in some way or another (and perhaps even better) on Android. Don't get me wrong, I love my MacBook, but the open-ness and sheer customisation of an Android Phone > Apple polish on iPhone."
Maybe it it's not for the masses, but for those of us interested in learning, it does offer everything (good) the other OSs do, and much more. - celotil, on 07/12/2008, -2/+4Waiting for the prices to drop for outright buy - $850 for the 16GB model, plus $80 to unlock is ***** when you compare the iPhone (itself, not with the ecosystem) to other smartphones -, and waiting to see the ***** storm that comes about when AU buyers don't realise exactly how much data their plans allow for, given that SMS and Internet access will seem to be the same to most people when Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone are all charging/including those as separate items on their plans.
I worked for a phone company for 6 months and got myself fired - can't get unemployment if you quit - after I was so utterly sick of the ***** I had to wade through every day that I was thinking seriously about hurting my boss, the major cause of the *****.
The data allowances on all the plans from all the phone companies in Australia are *****, thick steamy green *****! They own the ***** network, don't pay anything to buy access from someone else, and they dole it out as if it was some rare and ***** precious thing they were gifting to their loyal peons.
***** YOU TELSTRA, OPTUS, AND VODAFONE! I have a good plan right now and a good phone. Give me a decent price for a high data plan and I'll THINK about buying the iPhone from you *****.
***** it, I'm blogging this angry tirade now. - inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Thansk for the tip saved me a wasted 20 minutes.
- mrtrik, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, it'll be a hodge podge mess. Like it or not, Apple unifies things. Like they did for music for ipod, they will for apps for iphone.
Your general public isn't going to give a crap about Android. That's techy crap - I agree with the linux comparison. The negative voices are a minority. The non-nerdy public cares about ease of use, minimal confusion, and slick product. And that's what iphone offers. One place to deal with your iphone - itunes - appeals to the majority. Hell... I'm a nerd type and i hated dealing with all the different sites that pawned would be crapware for my winmo htc before i got the iphone. I don't have time to deal with crap. - Ryan2845, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3Exactly, I don't own an iphone yet, and the hardware changes aren't going to make me buy one.
The APP STORE, is the big deal that everyone should be focused on. The app store definitely has me wanting an iphone. - badjoke, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Don't forget hardware tweaks to the speakers to make calls, speakerphone, and music clearer!
- goosegoose, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3we get it.
enough with the iPhone already diggas. - AutoTom, on 07/11/2008, -3/+5Im with you on this man,
if your willing to throw money in their faces then they should offer better damn service
it should be 1 rep per customer - gilpinatorious, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1You guys are all talking about the shortcomings of the phone and whatnot. The biggest and most INSANE problem is that AT&T is making people pay the extra $10 a month for 3G EVEN IF YOUR CITY DOESN'T SUPPORT 3G.
I called my local AT&T store and asked them "So, pretty much...you're forcing me to pay extra for something that i cant even USE??"
Response: Uhh...we have no ability to alter the data plan.
Absolutely ridiculous. - Waaaaalt, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2what's an obama?
- superkendall, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I also think trying to activate them at the store was a horrible mistake, but it probably would have worked OK if they had released the new firmware update yesterday. Today all iPhone owners, old and new, were hitting the activation servers.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Same here, but at least 100 people. Stayed for 10 minutes, line didn't move at all. Screw it, I'll try tomorrow.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Can we unlock it yet?

- good2beme, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1But you know there some real shortcomings with the exchange active synch. They will only really stand out if you have used active sycnh on other devices. I've been using the exchange synching on the ipod touch and this is what i have found:
1. It does not sycnh tasks - Very odd since all other devices do.
2. You can't send an attachment except for pictures. Even then you can't send them from w/in the mail app.
3. The only type of files you can save from email are pictures. Who gives a sh*t about this on an enterprise device, which the iphone is trying to break into. You should be able to save any type of document to local storage.
4. You can only download the most recent 200 messages. Winmo allows you to download 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month or All messages. I personally prefer to download at least a month's worth and with a 16gig device I could easily carry all of my mail with me. If all you can get is 200 messages, you will only get maybe a week's worth if you receive lots of emails.
This first implementation of active synch pretty much blows compared to other devices. It's definitely a 1.0 release. And not be able to save or attachment real documents. Come on. The iphone has great potential but Apple clearly still does not "get" the whole enterprise thing.
All of that being said, our sales rep shipped our iphones to us and we are going to put them through the ringer from an enterprise, on the go user perspective. So far, RIM has NOTHING to worry about. - scarwars, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1if this was Top Gear, and this was the Cool Wall section.. the iPhone would be seriously uncool by now.
- celotil, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Blogged, but I wonder if I should have video blogged it, to really get across how angry and hate-filled at the phone companies I am?

- Photar, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I upgraded to 2.0 yesterday by downloading from the FTP server and everything went fine.
