- BrendanSheehan, on 06/19/2009, -3/+100The battery life is great when you record at 720p
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/19/2009, -3/+5930 fpb (frames per battery)
- dafragsta, on 06/19/2009, -1/+39It's just mindblowing how much power is there in contrast to what desktop PCs had to something even 10 years ago. I'm certainly old enough to realize that a machine with 256MB RAM and a 600-833MHz CPU would (depending on the efficiency of the CPU) easily best my gaming rig from 1999 and with better graphics. (The PowerVR is supposedly on par with an ATI 9700 Pro in programmability) The small embedded system market is getting so aggressive now, and that's only going to close that time gap tighter. Imagine if they can get an Atom to run in the form factor of the iPhone in the next two years and get it down to a $15 unit price.
- Raptor007, on 06/19/2009, -2/+35Can't wait for a Cydia app that actually allows this functionality; you know Apple won't add it officially. :¬)
Also, why are 90% of the comments talking about video playback? This is for 720p recording, so you can take a nice video and watch the full resolution on your PC. - Mr_Lyle, on 06/19/2009, -10/+38Needs more front facing camera.
- Shazbuckle, on 06/19/2009, -0/+23You sir, need to learn how to use paragraphs.
- Shazbuckle, on 06/19/2009, -2/+23I agree, I had a phone around 5 years ago which could make video calls over 3g, and I knew a lot of people who had that aswell, and even though it cost the same as a normal call, nobody bothered.
Do you REALLY want other people to know what you're doing on the phone? I am often taking ***** and the like - rodon, on 06/19/2009, -2/+21People keep mentioning 720p playback on the screen... Read the damn article! It's 720p video recording capability with the built-in camera. Yeah, it's not a professional video camera, but it would put in on the level with a Flip Mino HD camera.
- Kakemonstere, on 06/19/2009, -3/+20Sorry, I've never figured out why the ***** you need a front facing camera. Like when do you actually have a conversation where both are like looking at the phone talking. You don't need to see peoples face when you're having a conversation over the phone imo.
- skeletorcares, on 06/19/2009, -1/+15nothing says high quality video like a 2mm lens.
- krisrm, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12Sometimes. It's one of the phone's lesser known features, to be sure.
- homercles337, on 06/19/2009, -2/+14English! Do you speak it?
- migitalwarfare, on 06/19/2009, -1/+13***NEWS FLASH***
Ordering parts from newegg.com, googling part compatibility, and knowing how a screwdriver works doesn't make you a genius. You can drop the superiority routine, it's played out. - whatit, on 06/19/2009, -2/+13Have you used it? No. You're no better than the guys who bash macs, *nix, or Vista without using it.
- damack, on 06/19/2009, -2/+13Regardless of the battery life it's still a pretty damn useless feature.
Due to the natural limitations courtesy of the size of the device high megapixel pictures and HD recording are more of a bulletpoint for those that don't know the difference between this junk and a proper camera or camcorder than anything else.
It's gonna be nice when they stop packing in useless features into phones and handhelds and just save us the money.
Of course Apple are not the worse in this department. 8 megapixel phone anyone? - dudefaceguyman, on 06/19/2009, -1/+11Windows XP release date: August 24, 2001
OSX 10.0 release date: March 24, 2001
Unless one of the features for XP was a time machine (OSX stole that too!) you're simply retarded and should stop talking now. - rnawky, on 06/19/2009, -8/+18This just in, the iPhone 3G S can also make phone calls!
- unclejimbo88, on 06/19/2009, -2/+10Garbage HTC phones, really? GTFO.
- roberekson, on 06/19/2009, -1/+9Because 32GB clearly isn't enough space for anything.
- Diggnabbit, on 06/19/2009, -1/+9Good thing 99% of people who use Windows would be able to reassemble an iPhone...
WTF? - rodon, on 06/19/2009, -2/+9perfect for ***** HD videos on YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, etc. That's the point.
You don't need a 3-chip 1080p camera to produce decent material for online streaming. - Morwynd, on 06/19/2009, -0/+7You DO realize we can view media on devices other than what originally recorded it... right?
Your rant is like saying "What good is a 10 megapixel camera when you have to view the photos on its tiny screen?" - inactive, on 06/19/2009, -4/+11Please. There is no comparison between OS X and Windows. AT ALL. Have you even used OS X?
Most of the features of OS X come directly from NeXTSTEP, which is Steve Jobs' baby when he was away from Apple. The dock, multiple workspaces, etc. - Assad, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7Whats the write throughput on the iPhone flash? Thats probably the bottleneck.
Edit: write memory buffering and video length limitations could help that. - maxsunset, on 06/19/2009, -2/+8Yeah, with ***** optics. Whats the point?
- zephyrxero, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7The first 2 iPhones CPUs could run up to 667, but were underclocked to 412mhz to give it decent battery life. I'm sure Apple has done this for the same reasons with the S. 720p video recording would be nice, but if the thing only runs for 2 hours before you have to recharge, what good is it?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/19/2009, -0/+6Who said anything about videoconferencing? We're talking about theoretically being able to record 720p video.
- dudefaceguyman, on 06/19/2009, -1/+7Let's be realistic, both OS's stole features from each other. Although I'd bet money on the Windows side taking more from Linux or Mac than either of them from Windows.
Regardless, both OS's were ***** piles of buggy ***** until a couple years after anyway. I skipped XP for the first few years and stuck with Windows 2k until a couple service packs came out and most people stuck around with OS9 for quite some time.
Now I dual boot Windows and OSX at the same time on my Macbook. Actually I'm running Vista right now alongside OSX 10.5 (via parallels) and like both the OS's for their individual strengths and features. Unlike you, I'm not some pathetic ***** who rages at others on the interwebs for their computer preferences.. But if you insist..
LET'S TAKE THIS TO THE INTERNET OUTSIDE MOTHER ***** - m4x30000, on 06/19/2009, -3/+9At least you are honest, dugg.
- MacParrot, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5Well let's see XP was released in October 2001. OS X desktop was released in March 2001 (not to mention that the server version was released in 1999). Soooo, you're saying that OS X got its features from a Microsoft OS that wasn't released until 6 months later?
Both OS X and XP went through a LOT of growing pains (the first version I got that was worth a damn was 10.2. I stuck with OS9 until then) with neither really halfway decent until the 2nd or 3rd generation. Other than some flash (especially on the OS X), both were relatively feature set upon release. So to say that OS X is "heavily lifted" from XP is nonsense, but that's pretty much what's expected from you. - etx313, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5My Canon t1i can record up to 90 minutes of video at 1080p on one charge. But the battery is slightly larger and its only really performing one function.
- dudefaceguyman, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5Yeah because the birth of Microsoft was completely original.
Development of Windows XP started in 1999 in the form of Windows Neptune. Windows XP was developed for 18 months, from December 1999 to August 2001, and was released on October 25, 2001.
Mac OS X Server 1.0, released on March 16, 1999, is the first operating system released into the retail market by Apple Computer based on their acquisition of NeXT. It followed the Rhapsody series of developer releases of what was to be known as Mac OS X. Although OS X Server 1.0 had a variation of the Platinum "look and feel" from Mac OS 8, it is based on the OPENSTEP (and thus, NEXTSTEP) operating system instead of the classic Mac OS, giving users a preview of the future operating system Mac OS X.
Windows XP was only mid development cycle by the time OSX 10.0 was released, and of course OSX 10.0 was obviously in prior development for a good amount of time before that. OS X Server 1.0 demonstrated a lot of features that were already destined for OSX 10.0 BEFORE XP even went into development.
History lesson over. - RudeTurnip, on 06/19/2009, -4/+9Turn it around.
- supermanred, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4But it fits in your pocket, and is convenient. Yeah, you can get a better SLR digital camera AND a better video camera but it wont help you when you are on the road because it is at home. Ive used my ***** iPhone 3G camera on numerous occasions at work because it takes seconds to take a ***** pic, and then immediately email it to someone... I can see where a quick and dirty 3.2 megapixel cam would ocme in handy.
- andycr512, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4Unless I completely miss my guess, it supports OGL ES 2.0, which is heavily shader-based. They won't want to encourage use of them until the iPhone 3G is less common, though. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnr4HCIoFlk and other similar videos.
- deadbaby, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6Well don't buy it then sweetie.
- dudefaceguyman, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4ALRIGHT! NOW THE RAGING CAN BEGIN!
AHHHH! HISSSS! HISSS!! OSX IS BETTER! AHHHHH ALTHOUGH WINDOWS IS GOOD TOO BUT SINCE YOU LIKE IT I'M GOING TO RAMBLE UNPROVOKED WITH A FEW CHERRY PICKED FEATURES WINDOWS TOOK FROM MAC SO WE CAN BOTH ARGUE IN HARMONY!
Look, we're not (or at least I'm not) saying OSX is completely free of taking features from past windows systems. (Although I disagree about taking features from XP with 10.0, at best they are coincidences and natural evolutions in computing.) But understand that both sides are evil little ***** corporations with no shame. You're the only one here viciously attacking another operating system for no reason at all. Did Steve Jobs sexually assault you or something? O_o
And you're a pretty lame computer nerd if you didn't think XP was complete garbage at launch. Both OS's were horrifyingly terrible for the first few years. My family does computer work all across california and only the Windows Me days were worse. (I actually even like Vista unlike a lot of people...)
Yes I'm definitely younger than you, and was only 12-13 when XP launched. But I've been doing intern equivalent work for my dads company since I was 5 and probably could've gotten a computer science degree by the time I was 14-15. I know exactly how bad XP was at the time, and I fixed a ***** amount of XP systems in the first few years. I hated it with a passion.
Windows is just as ***** as OSX, and even Linux isn't perfect. Operating systems are simply slightly less crappy every generation. Some people just prefer different shades of *****, so who cares? - Gerz1219, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5Yes, maybe it's a crazy conspiracy on Apple's part to deprive you of super-secret 720p video features.
Or maybe the phone's camera isn't high-res enough to capture HD video, the screen isn't high-res enough to display HD video, there are no sources legal or otherwise for HD streaming video, and there's no conceivable way the iPhone 3GS could practically act as an HD PVR given its low storage capacity, the need for bulky additional hardware, and the limitations of CableCARD.
Can the iPhone 3GS output HD video to a TV? If not, that's pretty weak. But I think it can. - Ender17, on 06/19/2009, -0/+4http://www.cracked.com/article_17412_6-world-chang ...
Another unforeseen problem was that people liked being able to see the person they were talking to, but didn't really want anyone to see them. With a regular phone you can answer safe in the knowledge that no one knows how sad your life is. But with a video phone, you can't hide the fact you're eating sandwiches on the toilet. - orph3us, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3Well the point if battery life wasn't an issue, would be to record it on the iphone then transfer it to your computer where you could view it in 720 viewing pleasure.... I don't think anybody wants to record purely to view on their phones.. same as a camcorder, you don't record it so you can see it only on the camcorder
- zephyrxero, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3The main difference, especially when it comes to video, is specialized hardware. A processor that has been designed specifically to do such tasks takes half or less as much power as a general purpose unit ;)
- JTMON, on 06/19/2009, -12/+15720P video played back on a friggin 3.5inch screen. Ya, HTC has an advantage in the dept if you say so but then again no they don't cause 720P video on a 3.5 inch screen is not the same as on a big screen. The viewing distance and screen size has to be taken into consideration.
And why the hell hasn't the story about pwnageTool 3.0 hit the front page yet. There's about 8 different submissions for it. - Tek12, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4What about looking at your loved ones from across the country? What about your kids seeing your face from across the world?
Forget about the business aspect of it or chatting with a buddy where seeing them or not generally makes no difference. - MrSkills, on 06/19/2009, -3/+6With an SD slot you have to start dealing with file systems, which would compromise the phone's simple operation.
The iPhone's major selling point is not how much it does (other phones can do more in many ways), but the elegance with which it does it. It's the only sophisticated smartphone that passes the "granny test". Unfortunately, that means certain compromises, like not having SD cards, limiting multitasking to Apple-made apps and not having copy/paste until they found a really intuitive way of implementing it.
That, and the fact that they can get people to upgrade the phone for more storage space :-) - andymadigan, on 06/19/2009, -4/+7@fribhey
Please get a map, or a globe or something and realise the U.S. is not the only country that speaks English (in fact the U.S. barely speaks English at all). The word is in fact spelled "realise". - TrancePhreak, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3My guess is no, unless that PowerVR has shaders.
- drewhoo, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Video Calling?
- Raptor007, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4You, sir, do not understand high definition.
- TrancePhreak, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3My guess is an actual chipset in the Zune, like a Tegra.
- ozodin, on 06/20/2009, -1/+3Did you ever figure that people take photos or record video on their phone, not only to watch them on their phone? Perhaps if all phones had this capabilities CNN wouldn't be showing us blurred footage coming out of Iran. Think about it.
