- nicc, on 07/01/2009, -12/+68mine doesnt even get warm...no one that I know of who has the 3GS has this issue.
- digitaldivinci, on 07/01/2009, -0/+39There's an app for that.
- ivan423, on 07/01/2009, -5/+41i hate licking envelopes. they taste horrible.
- 5cents, on 07/01/2009, -5/+40Living up to the name & hype? Literally too hot
- AngelBunny, on 07/01/2009, -6/+33The iphone 3gs is not going to have a recall.
- digitalpencil, on 07/01/2009, -3/+27well it's not going to affect everyone, just a portion of handsets. the problem however, is clearly reasonably far-spread.
- borez, on 07/01/2009, -2/+21That's be great for winter night fishing, no more cold hands.
- hawkspur, on 07/01/2009, -5/+20Electronics tend to produce heat.
- digitalpencil, on 07/01/2009, -5/+18Not overly surprising imo. products often have recalls due to various reasons and apple have had more than their share of trouble with batteries and graphics cards in the past. They have however, always honored their faulty merchandise (as they should) and have replaced my laptop battery and power-cord, no questions asked, in store and despite being out of warranty. Which, tbh, is the service i expect when investing sums like this into my hardware.
I'd imagine they'll simply honor all faulty iPhones, replace them as necessary and improve the power-management in 3.0 as i gather that dev seeds were still flowing just before release. - SirBruce, on 07/01/2009, -0/+11My 3GS gets warm but nowhere near the intense heat being reported.
- username7410, on 07/01/2009, -6/+16I've yet to have my iPhone 3GS get hotter than my 1st gen model while using it everyday.
I don't have it in some cheap 3rd party case, maybe If I did it would make it overheat? - lalalalamppost, on 07/01/2009, -3/+11BILLY MAYS HERE FOR APPLE IFIRE
- Lavane, on 07/01/2009, -3/+10So basically what happened here was that 3 - 4 people in France complained about overheating issues. Then someone important wrote about it on her blog, resulting in a bunch of other people wrinting in their own blogs about reading the original blog and everytime someone new blogs about reading it somewhere else, another person submits the new blog entry to digg?

I've never owned a product by Apple (although I'm thinking of picking up the 3GS) but I'm guessing this isn't too much of an issue. - serif69, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8Mine definitely gets warmer than the 1st Gen did, but never hot. Nothing like, say, a MacBook Pro...
- jakebellacera, on 07/01/2009, -4/+11No... my 3GS gets pretty warm. About twice or three times as much as my 3G did. I'm going to get a replacement.
- DomZy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+7Wow, that must be pretty hot then. My 3G get's fairly hot under heavy usage
- captainquack, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6I don't know what you're talking about.
- computershack, on 07/01/2009, -4/+10Judging by the above comments, it's nice to see the Apple Fanboi counter-FUD machine is up and running at Warp Factor 10...
- robbob, on 07/01/2009, -3/+9I can create an app around that
- MikeOSX, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6If you go winter fishing at night, you deserve to have cold hands.
- indyGuy, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5My iPod Touch used to overheat - A LOT. Turns out the Exchange software introduced in 2.0 was buggy. The solution was to delete the mail account and add it again.
If you read Apple forums, this is a fairly common problem since the 2.0 release, whether on the phone or the ipod.
(I agree, there will be no recall)
(Edit: the bug caused the device to constantly check the exchange server. Thus, constant data exchange, processor use, etc) - damnshoes, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5and cold fish

I miss him :( - FredFredrickson, on 07/01/2009, -1/+4Careful, if you're not posting about how awesome the iPhone is, your comment will be buried.
- Lavane, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3All I'm saying is that if you look through most of the sources for this information most of the sites are posting the same pictures of the same overheated phone, which leads me personally to believe the problem isn't that far spread.
Of course if true it should be taken seriously, but claims such as that the white model tends to overheat more to me makes no sense as they all contain the same components. - wontstoptalking, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3While mine was idle in my pocket, it was warm enough that I could feel it against my leg. But I've never had it get hot enough for me to be worried about it.
- Canadianpj, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2I bought one as well as several people where I work. Not once of us have had this problem.
- roxgod666, on 07/01/2009, -4/+6Buried for you not understanding what the title means.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -3/+5I am not a fan of Apple/iPhone, but when you have to resort to a quote like this
"Experts are blaming the applications themselves, particularly the games and GPS that are resource-intensive, Channel Web reports. The apps, the report said, pump up the battery until it gets too hot and eventually causes the device to overheat."
Seems like total BS article. Apps pump up the battery? What kind of expert did they find, Technotronic? - clickmyface, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2no problems here, and i've drain the battery completely just to help condition it (as per apples suggestion.) Put it through its paces to do that via web surfing/games. Overall, a slick little beast.
- vawksel, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2I have two in our family, I don't notice any increase in Temp over 1st gen iPhones.
- HappyScrappy, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3Pro tip:
If you have to resort to using the same picture as everyone else to illustrate your story, maybe you don't actually have a news story. - halo969, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1What's your definition of a cheap 3rd party case? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely interested as I'm waiting for my first iPhone (finally hopped on the bandwagon) to be delivered and I definitely want to get a good case for it before it arrives.
- ipodforumcom, on 07/26/2009, -0/+1lets just keep the phones away from cold and hot tempatures to avoid this...

- dmoffitt, on 07/01/2009, -6/+7Can digg add a "buried for sensationalist / overblown reporting" option instead?
- EeekiE, on 07/02/2009, -0/+13G S here without issue
However, I don't deny others are having the problem.
There's NOTHING worse than having trouble with something, only for people to indirectly accuse you of being wrong because there's is fine.
I guess I'm just lucky with mine, or they are just unlucky with theirs? - brandon28139, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Mine got very hot after using the video recorder. Apparently if you forget to go back to the home screen or manually turn the screen off after using the camera, the screen never shuts off. It had to be on for about 30 mins before noticing something in my pocket was getting very hot. When I got the phone out, the video recorder was still up and the battery about dead. This can be fixed with a software update to make the screen go off after not using the camera for a minute or so.
- Trick07, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1As a resident of Tuktoyaktuk, Canada this is welcoming news. We have 4 new 3Gs iPhone's on our plan and we found that we not only warming our home with them, we are raising the average temp of our little village. With an average temp of 12° throughout the year, the iPhone 3Gs is welcome!
Leave it to Apple, a company who markets how green they are to make it possible for our frozen tundra to be a little greener and a lot less frozen!
We need more iPhone's up here! - autobulb, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2Well since the heat seems to be generating from the battery (instead of the chipset) it's a reasonable assumption that greater power demand will cause a hotter battery since it might already be malfunctioning.
- pyrates, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1So if this is caused by the battery being used too much, shouldn't apple limit that? Isn't it part of their general testing to put the iphone to the max in terms of use and see how the hardware handles it? I know that's what other manufacturers do before they release something to the public.
- SaltilloPunk, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Interesting info. My cousin has been complaining about his iPod Touch running hot and draining the battery very quickly. I am going to point out your comment to him in case he hasn't gone to the local Apple store as planned.
- streak, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1... and a software update for the rest, including the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G.
proclamations of a product recall are for FUD ruckers, such as shills working for RIM, Palm and Micro$loth. In my experience, the 3GS actually has fewer problems than the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. - aristotle0dude, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1This issue is a known limitation that has been there since the beginning. People are obviously using the device to tether or as a GPS while plugged in for extended periods of time. What is happening here is the battery is being constantly drained and recharged when the power requirements for the application go beyond the power USB can provide to the device.
The same thing happened when people were using Netshare with Iphone OS 2.0 for an extended period of time. The battery would still drain even when plugged in (to USB port or wall) and the device would get hot. You are killing your battery by doing this.
Tether for only short periods of time or use Blu-tooth with the iPhone unplugged and use the GPS with the device unplugged. Then charge the device without using it heavily until you have charged the device and then unplug it again to use it again.
This will preserve the battery life and extend the lifetime of the device as a whole. - dkin6984, on 09/01/2009, -0/+0Its terrible that they arent even addressing this issue.
http://technologyblog.viewtwitter.info/ - Zarchon, on 07/02/2009, -1/+1I shall digg you both up. I have a 2G and just got a 3GS. Haven't played with it much but at least I can hear it ring AND listen to music without the headphones. Damn 2G but I still loved it.
