- surfacewound, on 07/12/2008, -3/+15Bah, I was hoping this was Ars Technica's review.
- daniel02, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6Already happened. Look a little further down the page.
- good2beme, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4This is something that ALL reviewers are missing. They are still too starry eyed over the iphone. I am a corporate user and I am waiting for my iphone to come in the mail for eval. However, I've been using the 2.0 firmware on my ipod touch over the weekend. Before I type the rest let me brace myself for the fanboy haterism...Okay, I'm ready. The iPhone is weak as an email device and the implementation of Exchange activesynch (EAS) is disappointing. Mind you I have be using Exchange push mail for the past 2.5 years. The problems I list will only be noticed by those who have used EAS on other devices. Here are the problems.
1. It does not synch tasks - Very odd since all other devices do.
2. You can't send an attachment except for pictures. Even then you can't send them from w/in the mail app itself. You have to open your pictures, select it and send via email. Dumb.
3. The only type of files you can save from email are pictures. Who cares about this on an enterprise device, which the iphone is trying to break into. You should be able to save any type of document to local storage.
4. You can only download the most recent 200 messages. Windows mobile allows you to download 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month or All messages. I personally prefer to download at least a month's worth and with a 16gig device I could easily carry all of my mail with me. If all you can get is 200 messages, you will only get maybe a week's worth if you receive lots of emails. This could be a real problem if you need to look for an older email.
5. Attachments anyone - YOU CAN'T SEND ATTACHMENTS TO NEW MAIL MESSAGES! This is something corp users do often from there devices.
This first implementation of active synch is pretty week compared to other devices. It's definitely a 1.0 release. And not being able to save or attach real documents? Come on. The iphone has great potential but Apple clearly still does not "get" the whole enterprise thing yet. I’m still looking forward to putting the actual phone through the ringer when I get it, but at least for the email part I am not all that crazy about it. The rest of the update looks pretty good but I may still have to go the jailbreak route in order to get more functionality.
Okay, fanboys. Let me have it. But you better bring data and evidence. - Laminarcissus, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Are you the reviewer? If so, great job. :-)
DaveClarkOne:
The source of our anger is not iPhone users spending truly eye-watering amounts of money on hardware and plans to get a phone with limited functionality when compared to other phones in its class, and then be locked into a proprietary software distribution scheme that limits it even more. That's all fine and between them, Apple, and their respective bank accounts.
The source of the anger is when owners put on the evangelist hat and start making the case to the rest of us that it's the best phone ever, or even best-of-class now, or that things like MMS don't matter (now that Apple has said we don't need it) or worse, start out condescending with no more knowledge of the mobile space than how their finger makes things go swooshy on the iPhone screen.
The iPhone has a far, far, far better user interface than (almost - see HTC) any other phone on the market. If you're willing to buy it for that, God bless you. But move on from there and there are phones that do *everything* better than the iPhone.
So please, if you don't want a proportional response ask your compatriots to stop with the "Jesus phone" stuff and simply say "I love the user interface, and that more than makes up for the other problems," and we'll have nothing to say, angry or no. - Pronation, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5Don't pick on him he's a little slow. :p
- BLAM8, on 07/12/2008, -5/+9Hey guys, if we've missed anything, please let me know. I'll add what I can.
- ninethirty, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5I bought the new one yesterday (had the old one) and the speed alone is enough of a reason to upgrade. Of course the app store kicks major ass too, and I'm even a fan of the new plastic back (which I thought I'd hate). I'd recommend if you can easily afford to upgrade, do it.
- Laminarcissus, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Obviously that's not what Steve Jobs says about the phone...
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3I can't wait until you discover the internet!
- BLAM8, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4Yep, I work at Giz and I am waiting for the Ars review too. Those guys kick ass.
- digiguy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2There was no problem for me the last time. Apple's problem is not enough servers and bandwidth to handle the iPhone and mobileme. The activation in the store wasn't necessary.
- nomadbea, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Excellent comparison.
- awp0, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Here's a detail that may not sound significant, but should annoy any serious business users: Although Exchange "push" functionality works well, you can't schedule an Exchange meeting. Of course you can schedule "events" (and they sync with Exchange as expected), but as far as I can tell you can't invite anyone to them or even look at other Exchange users' calendars. This feature would be missed by any serious Blackberry user.
Also, you should test the battery life relative to the number of emails received by "push". I see a pretty noticeable impact when email is heavy. It would be interesting to see how much the battery drains as emails come in. - Seidoger, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Lol, wow someone bought up a .com for that..
- ho0ber, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2It is complete enough for me. Thanks, Brian!
- shablog, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3And still, you can only use the horizontal keyboard layout in Safari...it's the little things like these that make a big difference.
- redwallhp, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Perhaps you should read the review before blathering about why not to waste your money. 3G alone is enough reason for someone who lives in a covered area, and coverage is expanding. But there are other improvements as well. Battery life is better, non recessed headphone jack, some reception improvements, and they likely upgraded a few things under the hood as well (though Apple isn't about to tell you what processor is in, how much ram, etc.).
That said, I'm going for the iPod Touch when I save up enough $$$ (hint, hint, Apple, slash the price...) - surfacewound, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Did you get the black one? If so how bad are the fingerprint smudges? Being glossy I can only imagine that it would be completely smudged all the time despite constant efforts to wipe it down.
I've been thinking of getting it in white for this reason. Stupid Apple, why didn't they just make it matte black? - BLAM8, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Appreciate it.
- pantalapampa, on 07/12/2008, -2/+3I sold my iPhone for $250 on craigslist and actually made money getting a better phone.
- BLAM8, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. It really isn't that important of a phone. It's all about the software.
- DaveClarkOne, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Balanced review. Last year the iPhone news was hardware. This year it's really the software. But I gotta have more cowbell and speed, so I'm upgrading.
And why the nasty comments from others? Go see someone to learn the source of your anger, please. - redwallhp, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Heretic.
- ninethirty, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Yes, I got the black. I had said I was going to get the white but after seeing it in person, for me, there was no comparison. Yeah, it gets pretty smudged up but ultimately it's the front of the phone and what's inside it that I care about... I'm not sure a matte finish would have been right.
- surfacewound, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I guess ultimately it's the type of thing I'd have to see in person, actually looking at the thing I may not like white at all, plus it may yellow over time, which would look awful. I think a matte black back could look good though, and almost completely eliminate smudges.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Apple, when designing the phone, probably said "who the ***** stares at the back of the phone" and made it glossy coz it was cheaper.
- diggid3, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1is arst' review up there yet? as in proper review
- spacebuddy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Most of the apps are crap, still waiting for SPORE.
- Seidoger, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Uhm, what about those who didn't already have some?
This was my case. - inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0The Iphone is as coolest thing to have for being a geek, as the Mullet was to the toughest thing to have in the 80's somewhere [near Holiday, FL] Obviously as you can see from my example it prob wont work out for the geeks either, because alto more people enjoy laughing at the super cool guy and his Iphone,, haha! oh ya in that review did you read where he said the guys that promised to to buy their girl a cell phone. ***** please that bitch can buy her own *****, HA thats a new Apple Iphone Commercial,. be apples's bitch & your GF's bitch, in the same day,.!!
- spyraled, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1They're going for around $500 on eBay....
- stryder100, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0Lots of people putting down the iPhone. I've never been an Apple person in my life and I've been computing for 38 years (yes you read that right). And more than anything I've been waiting for a hand held device that can give me the real web. The real clincher for the iPhone for me is the multitouch pan and zoom. It's actually usable, whereas browsing the web on any other device so far is lame lame lame. So there you have it - no more Treos for me, although they've been excellent.
- toptrendlover, on 06/12/2009, -0/+0Not a bad device, can't wait for the 3GS.
Found good info about 3GS on http://www.iphone3gs-review.info - stryder100, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0Oh yea there's the problem with no flash. That was almost a show stopper.
- maisseo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+0Gizmodo always brings good stuff to the table... this reviews of the iPhone 3G is really cool!
http://www.iphone-e-ipod.info - good2beme, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Actually you can disable push altogether at night and turn it back on in the morning. That option exists in the ipod touch version.
- PilotHead, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Giz became quite possibly the most biased iphone website ever. Every time they mention something that can be possibly bad, it's immediately followed by "a 3rd app will probably fix this soon." Seriously what the hell is up with the website? It use to be a cool techs and gadget site and now all they talk about is the iphone. Digg up on digg, digg down giz.
- PilotHead, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0digg up!, the iphone is typical of what apple does with their products (excluding ipods), make it easier by crippling features.
Say what you want, but the iphone is a crippled smartphone. - mbernoski, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Another deal killer for any experienced Blackberry or Smartphone user is there does not seem to be any way to schedule on and off hours for push email. This results in your phone buzzing all night unless you turn it off, which if you do you won't get those text message emergency alerts or be able to answer an emergency call... Seems like a small thing but for people who have actually used Exchange Sync for a couple of years this implementation is a huge step backward from all modern PDA's (granted the user interface is awesome but that does not make up for when the phone can't/won't do something). And what is the deal with no Tasks, or creating meeting invites from the calendar? or dealing with attachments? How can someone miss the importance of these things? Did the Apple design team fail to actually ever talk to a real business user before scoping the feature set? When my last phone died 6 months ago I went limping along on an old Treo 650 I had while waiting for the Iphone. Now I don't think I can actually make one work... I am truly bummed...
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -1/+0did i read that correctly , theres no video recording with the Iphone? what about custom ring tones, or over all call quality. ? from what ive read this phone is 3rd generation Japanese phone, with no real quality improvements only internet and Email. and a GPS, This Iphone you all go crazy for and, for what my Motorola does everything and MUCH much more than any Iphone, iv been able to find several software mods for free.! and you crazy folks go out and spend a fortune on this Dinosaur, yes i said it, its junk and whenever i see someone have them, i asked them why, and the best anwser i get is cuz its cool. that the Iphone users mentality!. crap product bought by crap people.
- marinebro0306, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1What's an iPhone?
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1I feel sorry for the IT people that have to deal with the iPhone instead of Blackberries. They're hard to manage, have no push email, and generally suck for business use.
At our company we set an "iPhone? on yourOwn" policy. We don't even glance at them when users bring them in. We can barely be convinced to jack with anyone's lame Windows Mobile smartphones since they have so much trouble importing a simple SSL cert for OWA. - waydee, on 07/12/2008, -6/+4Buried as duplicate iphonespam.
- KOfMyBasement, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1Iphone is crap. You can spend your money on better things.
- kristjand, on 07/11/2008, -14/+10Niiiiiice!!!! :P
Great review :) - forumsiphone, on 07/11/2008, -6/+1Certainly there is a lot of contradictory feedback about the new iPhone.
Good that we have the internet so we can weigh up the pros and cons of the new iPhone 3G. - inactive, on 07/12/2008, -12/+6DO NOT WANT! Here is why, the phone is exactly the same as the previous iphone without 3G (which only works in select areas) and gps. So everyone is rushing out to upgrade to almost the same phone. 2 Features on the same phone, doesn't sell me. Maybe if it had un restricted blue tooth, modem tethering, and MMS (which the old and new should both have) then it would be worth it.
- java99, on 07/11/2008, -6/+0i heard that there were already some problems with it....looks neat though:)
- AboveandBeyond, on 07/12/2008, -17/+9I wasn't going to buy one anyway, ***** steve jobs.
