- coldeh, on 06/17/2009, -2/+51I dont get why people are moaning and saying that this is not a very good upgrade from the 3G. I think its far more important to upgrade the internals of the device then do something as lame as change the cover. Think about the 2G > 3G upgrade, basically added 3G speed ad changed the back cover WOW ground breaking. IMO they upgraded everything important this time round.
It follows the way that the upgrade all of there products pretty much. Small important upgrades, then every now and again they get a big push, if they had of overlooked the hardware and concentrated on the looks now that would have been a ***** upgrade.
Says a lot about the iPhone crowd imo, for me, im much happier with hardware then eyecandy. All that hype over a matt finish back cover, ***** sake. - coldeh, on 06/17/2009, -2/+47http://www.flickr.com/photos/andyi/sets/7215761983 ...
iPhone camera quality samples, looks much better then the 3G, really impressed. - blackinthmiddle, on 06/17/2009, -0/+26FTA:
"The speed boost for downloads is interesting, seeing as AT&T hasn't even begun to really roll out their 7.2 HSPA in very many places yet."
The speed boost has to be directly related to the processor. I did a test when I got my 3G last year. I tried downloading a page with my safari browser on my laptop using wifi and tried doing the same thing with my 3G. My laptop is a lot faster, as I guess you'd expect. Bottom line, all things being equal, the processor is going to be the bottleneck.
My guess is, however, that as long as AT&T has a monopoly on the iPhone they'll take their sweet damn time upgrading the network, which will obviously cost them a pretty penny. I'd be surprised if AT&T upgrades any part of their network before next year. - dfross, on 06/17/2009, -4/+28How can you kill... that which has no life?
/South Park - CharlesSaint, on 06/17/2009, -5/+28No...
Faster speed (processor), voice commands, compass, better battery life, smudge resistant screen, Nike+, Auto focus camera with 30fps auto focus video, double the storage capacity (compared with first and second tier 3g models), more RAM... will cost you 100 dollars.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
Not to mention if you're an iPhone user, you know that multitasking is something that the iPhone is terrible at. So when you're swapping applications one after the other all day, the speed (or lack thereof) of switching apps adds up. - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+22Finally, macro. The bar code scanner + QR code apps will work way better now.
- s4g4n, on 06/17/2009, -0/+19Dugg for calling developers alcoholics
"developers are like alcoholics. If you put more system resources in front of them, they can't help but use all of it just because they can. Also, they drink a lot." - Ebacherville, on 06/17/2009, -6/+22pre killer ... hahahaha
- mbst2000, on 06/17/2009, -2/+14I have to laugh at these comments, everytime an iPhone article comes up you get someone coming up with the "You can only do what Apple tells you to do with your phone" blah blah blah.
Seriously pal, there are people fighting for their democratic voices in Iran right now and you're worried that you can't have a ***** porn app on the iPhone you don't own? Is it really that much of a big deal? I don't see them limiting what websites you can go to, or monitoring your calls, so this whole freedom thing amounts to what exactly? That you can't get another browser? What's wrong with the one that's on it? is that not enough? What more do you want it to do?
What about Skype? Yahoo Messenger? 3rd party notes apps? There are tons of original games available and you're annoyed that it can't play your old SNES games?
The thing is, I don't want to be a fanboy here, If you don't like it don't get it (I don't own one) but for the love of God catch a grip. You'd think Apple were asking you to sign over your soul and only allowed you to talk to people they liked the way you're getting on.
Repeat after me- it's.a.*****.phone - Johaen, on 06/17/2009, -1/+13Voice control is the biggest thing I miss from my RAZR2. I used it all the time when driving: tap the button on my bluetooth headset, say "Call Dave.", and it automatically dials. No taking my eyes off the road. Only one quick tap of a button, so both hands are available for driving. Much safer than the alternative.
- goomba323, on 06/17/2009, -0/+12I see smudges on the smudge resistant screen...why is that?
- Johaen, on 06/17/2009, -2/+13I'm guessing there's a good reason for not including Voice Control as well. My guess is that it's an application that's continuously running in the background and due to the 3G having half the RAM as the 3GS, they felt that there would be too big of a hit on performance if it had voice control.
- elie195, on 06/17/2009, -2/+13Have you seen the video? It's a lot faster.
I wish it would only cost me $100... For a lot of us it's gonna cost $400-$500. Time to reactivate my ebay account.. - Osirus1156, on 06/17/2009, -17/+27It's so ***** stupid. So many of the things that are exclusive to the 3GS can be done on the 3G.
- CCB0x45, on 06/17/2009, -3/+13uhh.. actually just 2 things...
video, and voice controls...
I agree the voice controls is pretty lame to not be included on the 3g, but the 3g is only capable of ***** 15fps or lower video and apple probably wanted to do it right... aside from that there are no exclusive features except for speed increases and autofocus, but thats all hardware. - Drax0n, on 06/17/2009, -0/+10I recently went on a trip and was using google maps with location finder on my blackberry and I can tell you i would have LOVED having the capability of having the map facing the direction I was facing instead of walking till I found a cross street only to find out I was going the wrong way and turning around.
If you never travel or never go to a new city it will not be much use to you, but while travling that feature would be very useful. - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -3/+12This comment is all sorts of bad.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -0/+9I think you're more at AT&T's mercy with what you can and can't do with the iPhone on their network.
- amadeusdemarzi, on 06/17/2009, -0/+8Just click All Sizes, to see the original ;) (you probably have to be signed in to flickr though).
- iDiggr, on 06/17/2009, -0/+8Never a hard-keyboard. Ever.
With the soft-keyboard apple is able to change it to 100's of different languages and variations. It will never get a slide down keyboard unless the slide down is a soft-keyboard. - cookingboy, on 06/17/2009, -1/+9IDBash...it's ok if you don't personally like Apple products, but please do not lie about facts to mislead other readers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Omnia
It came out in 2008, and last time I checked my calendar, it's not 2011 yet
It also has 128MB of ram, which is half the amount of 3GS.
Also...
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Unlocked-Windows-Slo ...
Last time I checked, $499 isn't 1/3 the price of an iPhone.
Maybe Apple sucks at life, but you sure suck at lying...
And seriously? Windows Mobile 6.1 has a cleaner UI than iPhone? I mean...SERIOUSLY? - kanningt, on 06/17/2009, -1/+9BAHAHAHA HA ha hah ha
- danwallace, on 06/17/2009, -2/+9Eh, I don't understand why you'd get a 3GS if you've already got a 3G, but I can see the appeal for someone who doesn't have either yet to buy the 3GS now. It draws in new customers, and they get an upgraded product instead of a year-old one that's beginning to gather some competition in the market.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/17/2009, -1/+8Later in the article:
"Even if you're on Wi-Fi, the fact that there's a faster processor on board mean that you're going to be done faster than on the 3G."
Ok, so I'm not the only genius that figured this out. - kurtzmoo, on 06/17/2009, -0/+7Where is the electrolysis feature we were promised?
- Qumahlin, on 06/17/2009, -1/+8"but I hate apple for making us stick to a contract when we don't want to."
Are you retarded? First off your contract isn't with Apple. Second, there wouldn't be a point in having a contract if the provider is just going to give you whatever you want anyway.
If you didn't want to stick to your contract you should have never agreed to it. The only person at fault here is YOU, not Apple. - CrazySpaniard, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6oh man this is worse than youtube comments
- Philbert, on 06/17/2009, -1/+7The "good reason" is that they want you to pay for a new phone. You can see that you have to open the voice app before using it, so it's not always running.
- Indecision77, on 06/17/2009, -1/+7I think you were reading a different review than me.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 06/17/2009, -1/+7Maybe people in cars will find it handy. But that is such a small, insignificant and obscure group of users.
- MixMastaKooz, on 06/17/2009, -0/+5I can see using voice commands if I'm running, on an exercise machine, or I'm driving (especially driving!). I can't wait to try it out!
- SpookyET, on 06/17/2009, -0/+5AT&T wil install 7.2Mbps 3G in 2012.We'll have the 5th generation iPhone by then.
- IDBash, on 06/17/2009, -2/+720th gen iPhone you mean...
- wlmafia, on 06/17/2009, -1/+6I would gladly pay $100 for a iPhone that was twice as fast.
- streak, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5Apple cares a lot about the user experience. It can quite easily be argued that the original iPhone and iPhone 3G hardware were incapable of providing a decent video solution while maintaining adequate responsiveness for the all-important core cell phone activities... at least when running the iPhone OS, which is our only option.
- Shazbuckle, on 06/17/2009, -6/+10Is anyone actually going to use the voice command thing?
Very gimmicky if you ask me, I've seen phones have this sort of thing years ago and nobody actually uses it.. I mean, who wants to be in a coffee shop and talk into a phone asking it to call someone? You'd look like a scallywag.
And I don't know about you, but in my short 17 years living, I've never cared which direction I was facing - UmarSajid, on 06/17/2009, -3/+7Its Apple and its shine.....why are people saying no?
- CrazySpaniard, on 06/18/2009, -0/+4you don't
- mikeevegas, on 06/17/2009, -4/+8Couldn't agree more. Gizmodo's Apple reviews seem like they're written by apple fanboys and not journalists.
- magamiako, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4I can imagine it now....
*run run run*
You: Call.......ho.....me.....
Iphone: Calling Heather
*catching breath*
You: Call....ho....me.....
Iphone: Calling Mark
You: <visibly frustrated> CALL HOME YOU PIECE OF *****
Iphone: Calling Teresa - reqage, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4I agree with you. I wouldn't upgrade if I had a 3G but since I have the first generation iphone, it's probably worth it. I would keep using the one I have if the speakers didn't start to slowly die. I've been using text messages as a main form of communication for the past couple of months waiting for the new iphone release.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5Exactly.
If I'm driving in the car by myself, I'll definitely use the voice feature. And in California they have been passing stricter laws each year. This year they banned text messaging. Apparently you can still enter/select phone numbers while driving... but that's a bit more dangerous than holding down a button for a second and saying the name you want to call. - streak, on 06/17/2009, -3/+7In case you didn't notice, the iPhone 3GS does MMS and video recording (and video editing), so what does your "etc." supposedly cover? What are the "number of other things" Apple has done? Aside from offering more than 50,000 applications for the iPhone, in what way does Apple tell us exactly what we can and cannot do? Are you perhaps wanting smartphone developers to be able to snarf your address book and spam all your contacts without your knowledge/permission?
- Shawno1, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4Wow, the camera improved a lot. It's actually really nice.
- Philbert, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5Could be handy in the car.
- calon9, on 06/17/2009, -0/+4I'm still bitter about the old Apple IIGS. Too soon for apple to put a g and s so close in a product name.
- snowbusiness, on 06/17/2009, -7/+10engadget review>giz
giz continues to be a joke - VitriolAndAngst, on 06/17/2009, -2/+5The most important update is the 3.0 software.
Apple is trying to build a consistent platform, where MOST of the apps keep working. There are some important new updates but the concentration was on performance. The next Snow Leopard update for the Mac OS will highlight speed, performance and stability.
I think when we concentrate on just getting things done, and not dickering with the computer -- then a laundry list of features isn't as important as doing 90% of the things we do most of the time as efficiently as possible. All the other companies, instead of refining their smart phones, are trying to add more features that the iPhone or some iApp might have created.
This is about maturing a platform. If you don't NEED to spend more money for twice as fast, you don't have to.
But in the computer industry, a 2x speed increase is a big deal. - elcaminos, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3Seems like a good time to upgrade if you're still a 1st gen user like myself. Next year should be the year for a major redesign, which I will patiently bypass and wait to upgrade for another 2 years.
- MrBabyBoy, on 06/19/2009, -0/+3Here`s my reviews:
The 3GS is FASTER, it LASTS longer and it has a BIGGER memory. -
