- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -9/+114lol definitely it matters for everyone.
- jwolcott, on 06/26/2009, -6/+75Yes, it matters. It ALWAYS matters.
- macslut, on 06/26/2009, -3/+58Oh hells yes it matters. I wasn't too worried that the jailbreak would come out fairly soon after the release of the 3GS, but I'd rather have a jailbroken 3G than an unjailbreakable 3GS. I can't wait to enable full multitasking, and I'm imagining the GPU should be just fine in terms of handling some of the theme stuff I wanted to do on the 3G, but didn't because of the speed issues. Also...Skype on 3G/Edge, Categories, SBSettings, being able to customize apps and cheat settings for games, the list goes on...
- Qumahlin, on 06/26/2009, -2/+45I hate these idiot reporters at PC World "But is switching carriers a good enough reason to risk your device warranty with a software jailbreak?"
Your not risking your device warranty because short of being a complete and utter retard and manually trying to break stuff you can not and will not brick an iPhone while jailbreaking it using the normal methods.
I've made a mint buying supposedly "broken" iphones off ebay and craigslist and flashing them back to a factory state and reselling them. People seem to be too lazy to google or just not technically inclined enough to follow instructions.
Once you flash everything back there is no way for anyone to tell if you touched the devices software or not. - lostinspac3, on 06/26/2009, -6/+37You can pay $2500 a year for your iPhone, but $10 is busting your balls? Let me guess, you saved for an entire year to buy your phone, am I right?
- rwallen, on 06/26/2009, -1/+31Be careful, you can talk about downloading things illegally only if it is music or software for a windows PC.
- theghoul, on 06/26/2009, -1/+28Uhh.. yeah?!
* Having FREEDOM to switch carriers
* Having FREEDOM to run apps that don't conform to apples rules. I bought it, I want to do whatever i want to it.
* Having FREEDOM to develop your own apps for it.
* Having FREEDOM to show apple what their customers want by example (tethering, themes, etc).
That's just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. - KennMac, on 06/26/2009, -1/+20If the only thing Jailbreaking did was give you a Terminal app, I would still do it. I cannot wait to JB my 3GS so I can get my Terminal app back already.
1. Install OpenSSH.
2. Install XGPS (jailbreak only GPS app)
3. Customizations (themes and sounds)
4. MxTube (download YouTube videos to be stored on the phone)
5. NES Emulator
6. PlayStation Emulator
7. Terminal
8. Background Applications
9. Cron jobs!

... - mikeazorin, on 06/26/2009, -0/+18There's a restore button in iTunes.
- NeoTechni, on 06/26/2009, -1/+19"but ATT needs to open up the damn app store already."
You mean Apple? - petro62, on 06/26/2009, -1/+15I bought the 3gs and it was my first iPhone. I had been reading about jailbreaking for a bit before I got the phone and now that I have the phone in hand I can only name a few reasons that I personally would jailbreak it for. Customization would be the biggest reason I would want to jailbreak my phone. It would be neat to make custom icons, change the sound files for certain events(txt message alert for one), and other various small things. So far the only thing I like about my old Black Berry over my new iPhone is that I could customize every sound on there. And I could do it with an mp3 rather than having to convert it over.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+13Well yes, because without the jailbreak, I can't get my I Am Rich app.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -6/+19***** YEAH. Jailbreak / Dev Team > AT&T & APPLE
- Qumahlin, on 06/26/2009, -0/+12"when i did have a jailbroken phone it was crazy slow in comparison"
Um, that means one of the apps you installed or was using was not working right. Jailbreaking your phone does not slow it down whatsoever, most likely the theme you were using was ***** and had Winterboard eating up all your resources.
Do some research before making baseless claims. - ngmcs8203, on 06/26/2009, -2/+14$2500 a year?
$89x12+$499 (for the first year) does not add up to $2500. - KennMac, on 06/26/2009, -0/+11Depends on what geeky interest I have at the time. For example, there's a binary that when you run it, it just polls the GPS, writes the current coordinates to a text file, and quits. You can setup cron to run this binary every 5 minutes or whatever, and you can have a text file full of the locations you've been that day. You can then plot these coordinates in Google Maps and Google Earth. It's quite handy for planning or mapping hiking trails, or even just driving around. That's just one example.
- Stewart21, on 06/26/2009, -6/+16Yes... Of course it matters. Buried!
- Invid, on 06/26/2009, -0/+10Sure, not everyone jailbreaks, but I had tethering and global search on my iPhone last year. You're a fool if you don't think Apple is keeping an eye on the jailbreak scene to see which features resonate with users.
Several of the iPhones best features appeared on jailbroken phones first. I wouldn't be surprised if an analogue to SBSettings shows up on a future version of the OS. It's supremely useful. Just as QuickGold (global search) was before it got rolled into the official firmware.
It's a shame that I doubt they'll ever allow theming though. The inability to customize your phone is the only thing I really dislike about the platform. - spiffyfitz, on 06/26/2009, -4/+13I don't buy products that I can't hack.
- bradleyland, on 06/26/2009, -5/+13First, don't buy ***** games and you have no problem. Second, do you work for free, or are you just a troll?
- Qumahlin, on 06/26/2009, -0/+8You don't have to wait to tether.
Just go to help.benm.at on your iphone, choose the correct carrier profile, bam, tethering enabled. No jailbreak needed - ngmcs8203, on 06/26/2009, -1/+9With tethering now possible, 5GB could easily be attained over 3g.
http://cnettv.cnet.com/tether-your-iphone-os-3-0/9 ... - daschupa, on 06/26/2009, -1/+8A library of PSone rpgs beg to differ.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -2/+9Wait.... the iPhone has a warranty?
- Qumahlin, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7"The Sirius app, for example, doesn't have Stern. No reason for it"
The reason is that Stern's contract has specific limitations on digital rebroadcasting over mobile media which has put it in an odd position.
It's going to end up getting added, I guarantee it. - Qumahlin, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7Sooo speeds of 1.5mbps are no longer useful to browse the web? Thats quite some news to me, while it may not be blazing fast and great for downloading, its just fine for normal web browsing
- j0en, on 06/26/2009, -2/+9You could say that for every tech article ever on digg.
- sapo916, on 06/26/2009, -0/+6...or when you are out and about with a Laptop. Then again I realize you don't get out of the house as anyone that did would have realized this.
- j4nj1m3n3z, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7Yes, because jailbreaking turns the i(want all phones to look exactly the same)phone into myphone.
- ilikeeggs8877, on 06/26/2009, -3/+8what a stupid question. It matters to some people, and doesn't to others. Thats like asking... "custom firmware can be put on some new model of low end linksys router. Does it matter?"... it depends on who you're asking
- sapo916, on 06/26/2009, -2/+7If it is bouncing then that must be the hallucinogens you took.
- Awezing, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5That doesn't narrow it down very much...
- oshawapilot, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4PDANet works great, but setting up the ad-hoc WiFi connection every time you want to use it (a bit of a PITA, not to mention the fact it often disconnected me for no apparent reason) was it's downfall.
Again, once you try/use the built in tethering in 3.0 you will bid PDAnet adieu.
Enablling it is easy. Looking at it now it appears you don't even need to jailbreak anymore to access the filesystem for the hack, just visit the link below directly from your iPhone.
http://www.michaeljohnston.me/IMAGES/us_att.mobile ... - EskNerd, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4One year, extensible to two with AppleCare. Oh wait, was that sarcasm?
- Niz1, on 06/26/2009, -1/+5so you bought an iPhone, good choice.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4Yes - the 3G S has been demonstrated to emulate PS1 games nearly perfectly (FFVII specifically)
- chrysalis, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4It does. If only for SBSettings. I really, really, really miss it. Too bad that Apple didn't come up with something similar.
- TexasShiv, on 06/26/2009, -11/+15Lulz!!11! Yeahh! EVERYONE jailbreaks!! What a ridiculous question!
- daroots, on 06/26/2009, -1/+4"AT&T haters, porn fans, and gambling addicts" .....it's OK, I am jailbreak material...:)
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -5/+8Sure it matters, as long as app developers are charging for ***** that's free everywhere else. No, I will not pay $2.99 for an AIM client. Sure, there's a free one, but they don't charge for any other device. It's like these apps that are otherwise free are only charging on the app store because it's something to do. I'm not playing that game.
Or apps & stupid limitations they put on them. The Sirius app, for example, doesn't have Stern. No reason for it, either. So screw it, I'll just make an app that rebroadcasts the stream from their official online player through my own server to my phone. Voila.
Find My Phone, not paying for that. That was shown off as a feature to the phone but instead is only available for extra purchase of MobileMe. I'm not a fan of deceptive advertising, so instead I'll make an app that just occasionally pings my server with the current location.
So yeah, if you have the skill to know how to get around these nonsensical limitations or tricks they play, it certainly matters. Plus it's kinda fun taking some expensive apps, remaking them as competition, making them better, and just re-uploading them to the free section :D
It's YOUR hardware, it should be open for you to play with and customize you see fit!
(PS, Digg Staff: This bouncing reply box is annoying and has been here for well over a year, what gives?) - skittixch, on 06/26/2009, -4/+7fyi...that's a little like saying "where can I steal music?" on a songwriting forum. I'd assume many people on digg are in/tied to the mobile content industry.
- Bartboy919, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3*cough* appulo.us *cough*
- Plaguefox, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3You just want your Metal Gear Solid sound pack, admit it.
- superkendall, on 06/26/2009, -2/+5Find My Phone was always clearly described as needing MobileMe to work.
There are actually other good reasons to subscribe to MobileMe beyond that one... - firesights, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3One app alone is the #1 reason for jailbreaking an iPhone.
PDAnet.
There is nothing the non-jailbroken iPhone has to offer that even makes me think about updating to 3.0. I'll keep my 2.2 with free tethering, thank you. - MxM111, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3Then get a free ***** game, there are lots of those on app store.
- Nairebis, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3Yes, but AT&T can track that sort of tethering. Tethering via the jailbreak app is invisible.
- RagingIce, on 06/26/2009, -4/+7right, because you know, without apple there'd still be an iPhone to jailbreak...
- stuffradio, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3Yet you came in here and posted about how it doesn't matter. Buried.
- inactive, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3@ chongli
It's not. VoIP works great if you have a good signal. -
