- 7m7uf, on 07/14/2009, -2/+26Would be nice to have an historical sites app that links to an audio decription MP3 -- kinda like Museums have those audio devices.
- Chairboy, on 07/14/2009, -1/+16The Android has a great app called SkyMap that overlays starmaps as you pan the phone around. I'm eagerly looking forward to something equivalent for the iPhone, it's the only feature I saw on my friend's Google Phone that actually had me envious.
Competition is AWESOME for the end users, wooooo! - thedivinelyevil, on 07/14/2009, -3/+18don't do much traveling do you? beats having a map!
- yabos, on 07/14/2009, -3/+15Stay out of the APPLE section if you don't like it idiot. You know you can set filters on what kind of stories you can view? Seems like you are the brainless *****.
- blakespot, on 07/14/2009, -1/+12Works great as a controller:

- kazukisan, on 07/14/2009, -6/+15Is kinda of neat though.
- jsauter, on 07/14/2009, -3/+12@dumbledorito
Only one thing you said is actually an iPhone issue (the multi-tasking). You do know that the iPhone can do cut and paste now and that the tethering cost is a AT&T issue? With Rogers in Canada tethering is included in your monthly data quota, at least for the time being. - 7m7uf, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7"do not belong on digg since its suppose to be medium for science/technology"
When was this not Technology? - psychoace, on 07/14/2009, -3/+10How are you going to use the subway app if your underground hiding from the GPS sat?
- medj, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7You forgot to mention at the end of your comment, "I know I'm going to be dugg down for this comment."
- HallyWooD, on 07/14/2009, -4/+10Not to mention the metal detector. $100 says next week's top Digg "IPhone 3GS NOW HAS METAL DETECTOR!!!!!"
What about the Wikitude app for the G1, it's already been done Apple. - Kijael, on 07/14/2009, -3/+9That doesn't make sense. You are saying reality is better than reality with useful information
- serff, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6you mean like HearPlanet?
http://www.hearplanet.com/ - GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5By the time you're underground you're already in the nearest subway. Job done. At that point switch to one of the general subway apps already available (or if the one app handles both then even better).
- Anyonebutjulian, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5you dont. This app is for people who are above ground looking for the nearest subway station.
- MorpheousMarty, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Although it also uses cell towers and wifi to locate you, the GPS is the only signal that locates you within a block radius. I've noticed for example in my apartment it's off by a block or two, but if I lean out the window it will get me to within a few meters. It will also jump around a lot, especially when the signal is weak, like in a car. So there really is no hope of it tracking you accurately indoors. However if you can see the sky, odds are you will get a pretty good estimate of your location. I've been to bars more than once where I get a perfect pinpoint (so I can go back there another day) and then look up and and see the skylight.
- ColinZeal, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Yeah, I guess.
But isn´t raising your iPhone 3GS like that the surest way to get robbed in NY? - mantis108, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4....and the iPhone 3.0 software unlocks a world of battery life hell upon previous gen iPhone owners.
- NinjAlt, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4I saw a video a while back of a guy who made a game for his college campus where you had a video overlay type clue game where you went to certain spots and saw a short video overlay with the camera of what is going on and the ability to look for clues and such. It was crude but pretty cool. I hope someone can do something like that with this hardware. Also, if anyone has a link to the video please link it. Its been awhile since I've seen it and I've forgotten the details of it and my google-fu isnt good enough to look it up with so little details.
- ehaugan, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3@Dumledorito - You may be able to "background" apps, but your battery life is horrible too! I should know, I had a G1 for a few months but couldnt stand the craptastic battery life!
- 7m7uf, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3*****. I need out of my contract so i can get an iPhone.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4He uses his built in compass and the stars to navigate!
- ophello, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3stfu. you cant get nearly as many apps for g1.
- vman81, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Simpsons did it!!
By simpsons I mean HTC Magic/Dream/Hero using android.
But it really does open up a lot of possibilities. - freshgrease, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2All we need now are sunglasses with a thin OLED screen over each eye and a way to hook up an all-in-one AR app to the tv-out feature.
EDIT: Someone mentioned Denno Coil, but above is the general idea. - franklymister, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Does anyone have details on how accurately the iPhone can locate a person in 3D space? I would love to know whether it's possible for an app to be able to distinguish between, say, the phone pointed at two different spots in a room, for example.
- 7m7uf, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2***** LASER TAG! Get the Cords of someone else playing and your direction. Use the camera to identify a body and press a button and shoot.
- Staggx, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4You just ***** blew my mind.
- mytradingrobot, on 07/14/2009, -2/+4Could be very interesting tool - you have to give them enough time to come up with novel uses for it. Its easy to knock it right now and say "that has been done" - sure it has, but what you need are creative minds working on new, unused purposes. The iPhone definitely has groups of dedicated users, so lets see what they can come up with. Perhaps a bluetooth enabled shooter game that can find people nearby to join in. http://www.mybluetoothworld.com
- Fu510n, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Have you heard about Pocket Universe on the iphone? I think that might be what you are talking about. Here's some info about it:
http://www.atmasphere.net/wp/archives/2009/06/25/p ... - Ragarnok, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2if you are wondering what apple might include next take a look at this from nokia : http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-kamppi- ...
no judgment, just making a guess here - GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Background apps isnt an "issue to be fixed", it's by design. Push notifications is vastly more work to implement than background apps. Apple took the harder route there. Smartphones with background apps have poor battery life. My last Symbian phone with background apps left running zapped the battery if I made use of it.
With copy/paste. It's much harder to implement it properly on a touch driven UI. Copy/paste in any other device is a basic clunky affair. There's no doubt Apple did the best job with their copy/paste. It's well thought out.
Tethering can be enabled on an iPhone for free. You just have to hope the telco doesn't notice. It's a basic hack involving iTunes and a settings file. Tethering costs is a telco issue and not an iPhone issue. If you use anything other than an iPhone right now I doubt the telco particularly care about it - there's not many on the market so will have less effect on their network. - bardya, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1All you need now is a pair of glasses to receive video information from your iPhone wirelessly (Bluetooth possibly), then you can scream "HUD for EVERYBODY!!!"
- 7aji, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Finally someone is taking advantage of what some new smart phones can do!
Now only if you can strap it to your eyes, and control it with your brain!
COMING SOON
"the iPhone Think" - InverGoatie, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I really hope you're right ShaneMcDeath. AR really is cool as *****!
- GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3There's a few sad people who spend all their energy trying to discredit Apple and their users instead of trying to find devices which suit THEM and move along. ***** like you only feed them.
- BlameCanada, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1When I had my Palm Treo, there was a game called Arcade Reality(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDjvGu19XJQ) that used the camera and superimposed enemy avatars so that it looked like they were floating in space. Neat concept, although it had the habit of making you look like an idiot, spinning in your chair or twirling around like a retarded dancer doing the robot. The enemies moved around and you could track them, shooting them with lasers and guided missiles. They shot back as well and hitting you would cause black splotches to obscure your view. And it did all this without GPS or a compass.
I'd like to see a cool 3D FPS using the camera and all the other bells and whistles. - alexdrod, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I know, compass is great and blahblahblah.
I still want my ***** MMS, AT&T - GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Requires API support from Apple first. Several AR companies have petitioned Apple for it. I recommend everyone else ask Apple to make sure it's added to OS 3.1. Apple have a feedback form on apple.com at the very least which will get forwarded to the Apple devs.
- InverGoatie, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1iThink
- ehaugan, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2G1 doesnt even come with a video player! Great, your phone had a compass first. Too bad you couldnt use it after 3pm because the battery was dead!
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2If it won't fit up his ass, it's not real technology.
Wait... An iphone would probably fit up his ass. - GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Maybe because you were being pretentious and provocative? The phones in the year 2000 you refer to had basic copy/paste. Implementing decent copy/paste on a purely touch driven UI is a different ball game. It's good that the G1 has shown what is possible with a compass. Now the iPhone brings that mainstream. Apple mainly put it in for orienting the maps though. The API for it isnt supported yet. Apple have been short sighted here.
- GreenAlien, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Android added a compass. Hardly revolutionary and it's not the first device to do so. GPS nav got there before. Augmented reality is certainly nothing new.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Compass app is useless.
Please see: Google Maps / GPS - ColinZeal, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Uuuh hi? Do I know you? Not to be too NY but still.. :-P
- ophello, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Wow...
- emildorbell, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Hi, ColinZeal!
- Chairboy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Neat! Looks a bit kludgier than the Google app, but the best is yet to come.
Thanks! -
