- ThinkOutTheBox, on 06/21/2009, -39/+146Lets see WebOS has been out for all of a few weeks, the apple OS has been out all of a few years and is in its 3rd generation.
Pre - 1st gen
iPhone - 3rd gen.
I'd say Apple has some major competition. Not to mention the Pre is open source. iPhone maybe faster and a little smoother app wise, but its saying a lot that Palm has been able to put out a 1st gen product to be able to be a serious competitor with a 3rd gen apple product. - michael0310, on 06/21/2009, -3/+87But in all fairness Palm hasn't exactly been sitting around on their laurels either. To think that they haven't taken advantage of these past three years to develop the Pre and WebOS is just naive.
- FirstCuts, on 06/21/2009, -13/+87It's not like the Pre was drubbed, but it has to be disheartening to Sprint/customers that they'd waited a year for this phone, and it was already one-upped a few days after its release. (And believe me, I'm one of those disheartened Sprint customers.)
- Lightstab, on 06/21/2009, -8/+75Engadget is reporting that the iPhone3GS is 22 percent faster than the Pre. These guys at Anandtech are bad at math.
- priegog, on 06/21/2009, -9/+48The irony in this is simply amazing.
I never tought I'd see the day when an iPhone user would bash another phone on the basis of it's inability to copy/paste, not when the device in question is a first-gen, and definitely not when it's been less than 2 weeks since the iPhones have been able to do that.
I'm no Pre fanboy, but seriously, they're very likely to get that functionality before the year's end, and hopefully much sooner than that. Been a former Palm (oldschool palm pilots') fan, I know they actually know AND care about what their customers want/need. - fugazied, on 06/21/2009, -8/+44It's not the first phone Palm has made, so first gen or not they have smart phone design experience. It's about time they had something comparable to iphone. Yeah it took them 3 years after the release of the iphone to make something comparable, that's pretty slow.
- gaymathman, on 06/21/2009, -6/+30Whomever wrote the summary made some mistakes; it's 2.22 times faster (122%) than the 3g, and 21% faster than the prē. The prē seems as though there was a problem loading one of the websites, as it took twice the time of the 3gs, so network abnormalities probably affected that number. The web page speeds make it almost viable to browse the Internet via an iphone, though not quite...
- heyimfromreddit, on 06/21/2009, -2/+24Haha yeah amirite?!
No really though, that's a pretty old joke which I see a lot on the internet. It's not really all that funny. Maybe it was funny the first time?
I rarely go to Starbucks, but the times I've been I haven't once seen an iPhone user, or even a Mac user. So what's with this joke about users of Apple products sitting in Starbucks writing screenplays?
But hey, whatever makes you feel superior over people who use different products than you.
What...you have a Panasonic TV? HAHA I BET YOU GO TO PIZZA HUT AND TALK ABOUT SPORTS. - digitaldivinci, on 06/21/2009, -1/+23I think, for what it's worth, that the Pre is a fantastic phone and it has it's own perks that the iPhone does not. It's probably the best competition we have and it's success could mean for more of an effort into true iPhone multitasking or maybe a version of an iPhone with a keyboard - god forbid.
Please don't get down in the dumps when a new toy comes out featuring more bells and whistles than your toy. Life's hard enough to not enjoy what we have. - badqat, on 06/21/2009, -4/+22Former loyal Sprint customer here - who left them exclusively due to the iPhone, and no other reason.
I've been disappointed by AT&T's "customer service" on too many occasions to ever dream of staying with them once the iPhone is available on any network. Verizon, t-mobile, Sprint - doesn't really matter, because it's anyone but AT&T.
I can't wait for Apple to declare it's independence from AT&T.
So don't sweat the Pre. It's a fine phone - and it will get better. Ok, that's not strong enough - it's a phone I'd consider if it were on AT&T. It is, without a doubt, the first competitor to knock Apple between the eyes, It kind of makes you wonder why Verizon took that exclusive deal on the BB Storm when things like the Pre were in the works. - psunut5, on 06/21/2009, -12/+28My brother has the Pre, I have the iPhone 3Gs. My phone is faster at everything it does. It all depends on your area and cell coverage. In a good area the like where I live, the 3Gs dominates all other phones including the Pre. Its fast, dont get me wrong, but its still beaten.
Also, the biggest setback of the Pre is that its on Sprint. Who the hell wants Sprint?! - doublem9876, on 06/21/2009, -0/+13Who cares which one has been out longer? They are both existing simultaneously, and thus ought to give each other competition.
- essjay, on 06/21/2009, -3/+16I can understand your point, but I don't get the relevance to consumers currently deciding on which phone to buy. When I pick up a phone, I don't care which generation it is, I just care about how well it works.
And even if you do care about which generation a phone is, you'd have to consider the fact that Apple (now) have a proven track record of steady improvements while we don't know how effective Palm's updates will be.
But then again, don't listen to me, the Palm Pro is CDMA only at the moment so I couldn't even buy the thing here (UK) if I wanted (I'd love to try one). - JGUSMC7, on 06/21/2009, -0/+11Who the hell wants AT&T?
- ehaugan, on 06/21/2009, -1/+11Did you even read the article?

- SPECOPS, on 06/21/2009, -6/+16I listen to my itunes while surfing the web or playing some games, isn't that multiasking? Oh wait, I forgot, don't feed the trolls.
- paloooz, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10Math fail. 122% faster than the 3G, 21% faster than the Pre.
- FirstCuts, on 06/21/2009, -0/+9My biggest concern re: the Pre right now is how they're dragging their feet getting the SDK out. Although the reveal that some of Apple's web apps work with webOS was great news this week. Who knows what'll happen a year from now when my deal with Sprint is up.
- SPECOPS, on 06/21/2009, -3/+12not to mention, while you're running all those apps (and not actually using them all at the same time) your battery will go down far far quicker, and since the Pre's battery is already not so great. I can't think of too many people (maybe less than 1%) who would have a need to multitask more than a few things at once - so now the troll war is "no copy&paste? bs phone!!" to "no multitask? bs phone!!" - pathetic. Besides the iPhone can multitask just fine, like playing music while you're surfing the web - if you need more than that, and there are some of you who do, and some of you who need a physical keyboard, then go get the Pre, its perfect for you - why spat off your ***** on here?
- DJRobX, on 06/21/2009, -1/+10You might want to look up what the 3GS is using. :)
- tailfly, on 06/21/2009, -0/+9There are lines on top of some of your e letters. You might want to get that looked at.
- jakem1, on 06/21/2009, -5/+13I, on the other hand, knew with absolute certainty that this day would come as soon as iPhone 3.0 was released.
This is exactly the same as the logic used by Apple fanboys who criticise Palm for not having released the WebOS SDK yet. They jeer that Palm don't have an App Store with 50 gazillion apps whilst happily ignoring the fact that it took Apple a year to get their SDK and app store out.
I don't think Apple pay them to think, just to throw as much mud as they can. - mrBitch, on 06/21/2009, -1/+9Also, in case anyone brings up "why not include the Storm in the comparisons ?" :
" .. I have a storm... You want a comparision? ok.. first off there is no WIFI, so no point in results there since storm doesn't have wifi.
v4.7.0.148 (Platform 4.0.0.181) opening different progs..
Web Browser... 6 sec
Dialer......... 2 sec
Google maps.... 2 sec
Camera......... 4 sec
to take a pic with max resolution. etc. with camera... no comparison... by the time it takes a pic, what ever i was taking one of is long GONE! it takes about 3-7 sec on a GOOD DAY
.. lowering resolution, etc. makes this marginally better. for it to SAVE the pic, it takes about 8 sec.
Email.......... 0.8sec
Conclusion: the phone still locks up on heavy use of email/phone, or just turns off since it can't handle heavy use...
... this is NO iphone, so don't expect it to work consistently like one." - Manguy, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8Coffeehaulic, the problem is, is that the PRE isn't face to face with the 1st gen iPhone... it's competing with the latest generation 3GS.
- Dezurtdog, on 06/21/2009, -2/+10I was with you there until the Sprint comment. Yea, AT&T is such a reliable network. Not to mention the affordability! It's the reason I never got an iPhone. AT&T sux!
- beernutz, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8I'm sorry, but the prē is NOT open source. Please double check your statements.
- gaymathman, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7It's actually because the Slashdot.org site has a special, iphone optimized web page.
- Schwa142, on 06/21/2009, -2/+9Why does everyone think the iPhone's been out for 3 years...? it's only been two, as of the 29th of this month.
- SPECOPS, on 06/21/2009, -6/+13Yeah, on the other hand, it was Rim and Palm users who stated the iPhone was useless because it couldn't cut&paste, now the irony is, the iPhone can cut&paste better - I guess the only two arguments now is the iphone can't multitask (even though it can with native apps), and it doesn't have a physical keyboard. The trolls can be on both sides, remember that.
- kfxrcer1, on 06/21/2009, -0/+7and that was only possible because the iPhone existed. its a lot easier to imitate and have a physical product to set and know what your goal needs to be. what similar phone existed when the iPhone made its debut? The iPhone created and set the bar so it should only be logical if you seriously wanted to beat it you know what it should take. keep in mind how long has Palm been in this market compared to Apple.
- ThinkOutTheBox, on 06/21/2009, -2/+8No they haven't, but they also haven't had 3 years of customer suggestions to update and modify the phone to customer complaints and suggestions.
Sure Palm has had a few phones out before it, but this is a completely new OS that they released on the market. and its open source. Which means as soon as the SDK comes out people can make changes themselves, for it to run smoother etc.
Where as with an apple product you have to wait for apple to get around to release a patch. - ted510, on 06/21/2009, -2/+8Are you serious about that comment? Over 50,000 apps and counting and let me guess, you haven't actually used an iPhone or don't have one? Or do you just have the stereotype that all Apple users are liberals and douchebags?
I guess I'll go to Starbucks now and talk loudly on my iPhone 3GS! /s - mrBitch, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7Zing!
- quomen, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7Whoever, not whomever.
- Xencor, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7i was fairly confused by these numbers. i just did a quick test and over wifi, my G1 only took 14 seconds to load digg.com. That's not exactly breakneck speed, but it sure is faster than the 40 seconds that the article attributes...
tried it with anandtech.com too, loaded fully in 9 seconds, not the 17 that this article touts.
i fully expect the 3GS to be faster than the G1 (better hardware, no apps running in background on the 3GS) but i don't expect nor do I experience the incredibly slow loading times that the article reports. - schmidt349, on 06/21/2009, -3/+9Fine, then make sure you also benchmark the pre's web browsing speed when multiple apps are open and watch as the 3GS's lead opens up from 21% to more like 50%.
- KennMac, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7I've been using it for 3 days now and it's worth every penny.
- KennMac, on 06/21/2009, -2/+7Also, the mantra that the upgrade is just for the compass is getting old. As far as performance goes, it's a completely new phone. And that speed increase alone was enough to justify the upgrade for me.
- Qumahlin, on 06/21/2009, -1/+6Or you just jailbreak your iphone and then you can multitask just fine.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -1/+6I have a 3G and it would be $400 for the upgrade. I'm sorry, but faster load time, a compass (which I already have with the compassgo app), a slightly better camera and video capabilities is not worth shelling out $400 and renewing my contract.
On the other hand, I have a year till my contract expires. Hopefully verizon pulls some strings to get the iPhone, and/or they release a completely new phone which will blow away the 3GS which I would be able to score the cheap price. It's worth the wait.
Now if you are not a AT&T customer, I can see it being worth taking the plunge to the iPhone. - inactive, on 06/21/2009, -5/+10***** Java.
- Flipperbw, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5it's called "The Hut" now
- geodebug, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5Android will be a hard one to compare specs over time since it isn't tied to one piece of hardware. I'm still waiting for the killer Android hardware to come out. I've been disappointed with what I've seen so far compared to the iPhone.
(I'm the rare animal who prefers the touchscreen keyboard over the tiny physical keys - big thumbs you know)
Any Android users out there that can comment on the state of the available applications? Any 'have to have' apps that I'm missing out on that would make me want to move sooner from Apple's phone? No trolls please, I'm interested in a conversation - not a war. - aussieNickuss, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4Dialer == Phone
- brundlefly76, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4I am really impressed with how much faster my 3GS is than my 3G.
Especially when playing games, load times are, like gone - Assasin's Creed loads 12 seconds faster - crazy!
Tiger Woods golf just has no loading times between shots and holes at all.
Wurdle never stumbles.
I have also gotten really accustomed to shooting a video, trimming it and sending it to YouTube instantly - now I post videos with the ease of posting a photo.
I am *really* jealous of Pre users being able to multitask though, especially radio apps. I listen to radio on my iPhone all the time. I would love to listen to radio, play a game, and switch to Twitter or email between levels. - ronmexico, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4So you recently bought an iPhone because it now has enough storage (I assume you went with 32GB), yet you considered the Pre even though it only has 8GB?
- SPECOPS, on 06/21/2009, -3/+7You're mistaken. That CNET video pretty much just tested carrier speed (as they pretty much had the disclaimer throughout the video). They didn't test anything but boot times, loading web pages over the carrier's network (which everyone knows can be faster or slower building to building). Anatech tested the launching of apps, and web browsing over a consistent network (Wifi) - I'd say that was a better scientific test, since no one will be able to control the carrier speed aspect. CNET wasn't too bright on how they tested anything other than the boot speeds. Furthermore, both the 3GS and the Pre use the same chips.
- nmezib, on 06/22/2009, -0/+4hey, i'm on sprint and I have 450 minutes (more than enough) with unlimited EVERYTHING ELSE (data, texts, messages... EVERYTHING) for $70 a month. how much are you paying on AT&T?
enjoy your singletasking toy. - KennMac, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4@kidathinnes
I totally agree with you there. My contract with the 1st Gen iPhone is just expiring so I was eligible for the subsidized price. In addition, I just sold my 2G iPhone on eBay for $250 and I bought the 3GS for $199. So I actually made 50 bucks on the upgrade.
However without the subsidy I probably wouldn't have opted for the new phone. -
