- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Don't forget the formerly cingular line lol
You world is wireless...AT&T is wireless...now you're iphone is untethered from AT&T
- sekou, on 10/10/2007, -4/+77$100? One Hundred Dollars? Tell me something....why do I get the feeling the bulk of those who complained about the price of the iPhone (and it's subsequent $200.00 price drop) will have NO issue shelling money out for this thing?
- mikew101, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2They should sell it for $200.00 so the iphone is back at 600.00. I would buy this thing if it was cheap enough but a hundred dollars is a lot.
- l33tsauce, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14one word, FREEDOM. Stop thinking about just Americans here. There are 7 billions other people outside of the State and their only way of using the iphone is to unlock it. $100 is a VERY small price to pay for an unlock version of a phone as impressive as the iphone.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -14/+4Thank you consumer whore.
And there are about 6.3 billion people outside the US.- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I hear a moist towlette does wonders for getting sand out of a vagina.
- willgonz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29$100 is steep for a hack that could be turned off by Apple tomorrow.
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Let's think about this in terms of people savvy enough to unlock cell phones... Already spent $400-600 USD on the iPhone, and they could spend $100 to buy the software, or they could spend 0 dollars and torrent it. Which is more likely?
- uidzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Whoa whoa whoa, hold up. Are you telling me, there are countries outside of the US? You've got to be pulling my leg. Why is this the first I have heard of this? I'll research this later, we have to go burn some witches at the stake that were found guilty of practicing metric.
- lordsandwich, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Do you have access to maps, and such as?
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2lordsandwich - Nice. :-) (Looks like people aren't getting the Miss Teen South Carolina reference.)
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10let the unlocking begin!
$100 US dollars
let the torrenting begin!
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -14/+4Thank you consumer whore.
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2That's the problem with people today. They're just greedy bastards.
- zybch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You mean like Apple charging $200 more than their phone was worth?
- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5just a note - for those of you interested - one of the retailers listed on the iphonesimfree.com site is selling the unlock for about $50 usd - the company is based in australia, but claims to do "worldwide" unlocking
im not defending any prices on this (or recommending the aussie site - deal with them at your own risk) - just putting out the info... - evensong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.iphoneworldwideunlock.com (the aussy based company) is testing the unlock with the first 250 batch right now...
The wire for the rest of the 1250 has already went out. New orders will be wired in batch probably Wednesday. The software is real.
- retrospect, on 10/10/2007, -2/+58It's a tough choice, stay with t-mobile and get the iphone, potentially pay this money for the unlock hack only to find out several weeks later people are doing it for free and hope that apple doesn't release a major update to cripple unlocked iphones. Or keep my current phone and buy an ipod touch... which will probably be hacked to run everything the iphone does.. decisions.. decisions...
- nandasunu, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6keep your current phone and get the touch..
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Wow, your sarcasm sensor is top notch.
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That's it, man, stick it to 'em. Don't buy their old really expensive item, get the new one!
(Sent from my iPhone) - wreckingcru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1They won't be able to hack the Touch to do everything the iPhone does - if Apple doesn't fit in a GSM radio in the device...
- RevJonathan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Skype + bluetooth (if it is there), or some accessory in the bottom dock. The touch could become a fantastic wifi phone!
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2You go get 'em, man. Stick it to 'em! Hells yes. ***** their current top o' the line $300 + gadget. Don't throw your money into that! Wait and get their next top o' the line $300 + gadget.
Personally, I couldn't imagine keeping up with the stress of both a phone and an mp3 player.- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12i gotta tell you - its more stressful than anything you can imagine - just think about it - i have to carry around a phone AND an ipod! sometimes when i need to make a call, and im listening to my ipod, my nose starts to bleed!
- hater2win, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1/applaud
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Looks like you've been fooled by the trick of the trailing 99's. It's $400 not $300. (Sure, $400 is technically $300+, but $400+ is far more accurate--considering tax.)
- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12i gotta tell you - its more stressful than anything you can imagine - just think about it - i have to carry around a phone AND an ipod! sometimes when i need to make a call, and im listening to my ipod, my nose starts to bleed!

- betasp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16No. Besides, How could they?
- retrospect, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30From the site:
2. Is it resistant to updates?
While we have taken all possible measures to ensure that the phone will remain unlocked, we can only guarantee the current released versions of updates (up to and including 1.0.2). With any of these versions, even if the phone is fully restored, the phone will remain unlocked.
13. Do you offer 100% money back guarantee if the software does not work?
The unlock WILL work. We cannot offer any guarantee should Apple Inc. choose to re-lock the phone after a future update.- toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Sounds like a contradiction to me... APPLE WILL RESTORE IT!
- yugiohdan6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if it sells them more iPhones why would they?
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why did they lock it in the first place, eh?
- sasquatchcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1to make money from ATT... if they relocked a phone, they would actually lose customers who didn't want to go AT&T, and still end up losing money.
- jayssite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They're probably required to by the AT&T contract
- cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I doubt they are required to relock the phone by their contract. They sell the phone locked and they don't unlock it; that is it. Obviously they had to agree to lock it to get AT&T interested, but I don't know why they would agree to relock them with updates. It's obviously not part of any other cell phone manufactures contract, so I hopefully AT&T didn't think of it or apple pointed out that they shouldn't be required to do something no one else did just because they would be publishing updates.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if it sells them more iPhones why would they?
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a Wii modchip to me....
- toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Sounds like a contradiction to me... APPLE WILL RESTORE IT!
- willcoll, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I doubt apple cares. They just passed 1mil phones. More unlocked phones mean better business. AT&T is probably pushing for something Im sure.
- DLoney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2apple gets a % of all money made through AT&T for the iphone. they end up making a lot more then what the phone is worth this way, so they would care.
- ibeetle, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3What the F.... how the hell could you not notice... IT IS IN THE FIRST GODDAMN PARAGRAPH.
In the event Apple comes out with a new firmware upgrade which will lock your phone again you hereby agree that Wireless Imports nor its vendor will be held liable or responcible for unlocking your handset again. If your handset becomes locked you will be charged to unlock it again.- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2although thats on wirelessimports site - this is the wording on iphonesimfree.com:
"While we have taken all possible measures to ensure that the phone will remain unlocked, we can only guarantee the current released versions of updates (up to and including 1.0.2). With any of these versions, even if the phone is fully restored, the phone will remain unlocked. If an update is required, we will offer it for free IF we are able to provide it."
of course, that just means that theyll probably offer updates to their re-sellers (if they can provide them) - this doesnt mean that the resellers will re-flash for free (we know, at least, that one wont - wirelessimports)...
- TheKricket, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2although thats on wirelessimports site - this is the wording on iphonesimfree.com:

- linkdj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+57Let the iPhone Unlocking Unlocking begin!
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Is it just a coincidence that the price of the unlocking is the same price as the gift certificate Jobs gave iPhone customers? Hmmm?
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6yes
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8wow, that's kinda steep. maybe they will drop the price in a couple months.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I give it two months.
- Ninjaneer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I give it 66 days to be exact ;)

- elint6, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0costs about $100? NOW i see why Apple cut the price by $200....
- ZEROCOOLIV, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Apple is probably encouraging this release... More sells for the iPhone, yes? I bet the update that Apple does that cripples this crack, doesn't happen until after the purchase warranty of 2 weeks expires...
- eyefork, on 10/10/2007, -14/+9100 dollars thats ***** gay
- ram100987, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10ridiculous, I'm sure soon enough there will be easy ways to unlock it for much cheaper if not completely free. Let the open source community get a hold of it and I'm sure it will be a free mod very soon after!
- gharding, on 10/10/2007, -2/+88So uh, where's the torrent?
- Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Wont work with a torrent, Engadget say they are phone specific. I.E. if you buy one it will 'only' work on your phone.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Thats what people say about DRM keys...
- MSstar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2so now someone has to hack the hacking app

The company we are working with to bring you the unlocking solution for your iPhone is not ready yet. We are not certain of a date yet to give you of when it will become available. We are working as diligently as possible to make sure that it is ready for you as soon as possible.
So technically nobody really has any software to sell.- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So in other words, they take your money, give you nothing, but promise you they will have it ready "real soon now".
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sounds like you should call your credit card company.
- locojones, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This is going to be so funny when they take all these apple nerds' money and then the website mysteriously vanishes, along with all your cash. Stupid asses.

- fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5I still don't understand, since when did software hacks cost money? Especially when Apple is proberly waiting till iPhoneSIMFree starts selling, to release an update which breaks it....
Guess its living in the Apple world, nothing is free! :( - nunofgs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+66***** that. Hackers of the world unite! Let's get this thing for free.

6. AT&T cancels the contract
7. You have to pay $1 / MB downloaded
8. Your iPhone loses its internet features- ydt89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49. ????
10. Profit! - Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39. You purchase the normal unlimited internet plan for the same $20/month they charge for the iphone
10. Profit (for everyone but ATT)- o2o2o2o2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+111. Tmobile wants some bling, so they make a $13 month unlimited internet
12. Everyone hacks their sim card, switches to tmobile

- ram100987, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0like sekou said, anyone will to pay big bucks for this phone when it first came out(being the rumors of a newer, better version in the not too distant future), and then paying the early termination fee, will have no problem paying another $100 to use it on the provider of their choice. About $1000 in the end for the newest, awesomest apple product on the market is no problem for these kinda people, just look at the overly priced desktop and laptops
- milkmage, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3$100 seems reasonable IF you're getting a new chip with the deal - Isn't a 'blank' SIM ~$80 anyway?
- neiltc13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Once again the Americans strike. SIM cards are available for absolutely free in many countries.
- kitchung, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4T-Mobile may ask for $20 but the phone rep says the local stores may give it to you for free.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When I got my new phone and my parents exchanged their for new ones (which were so old they required new SIM cards) they gave us our ols SIM cards as well as some free "dummy" SIM cards that we could use to allow the phone to boot, but with no service, in case we needed to extract any information or files stored on the phones.
So thats basically 9 SIM cards, 6 given to us for free, 3 new ones for our phones, our three old ones, and three dummy ones.
$20 sounds like a ripoff then if you ask me, the phones were practically free..... at least my parent's were XD
- ibeetle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Now this is a little eye brow raising. From the U.S. retailer that will be handling the selling of this software; Wireless Imports; Per their Update page:
UPDATE
The company we are working with to bring you the unlocking solution for your iPhone is not ready yet. We are not certain of a date yet to give you of when it will become available. We are working as diligently as possible to make sure that it is ready for you as soon as possible.
So is this software available or not? Even the reseller does not seem too sure.- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Its not, you are paying basically for a promise that they will give it to you "when it's done".
- Madcowz, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2$100... who in their right mind would spend that on a hack...
Oh, it's an Apple story. - dingmah, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't know that I could be without my cellphone for a few days, or maybe even weeks waiting for the iPhoneSIMfree team to release a new version, because Apple updated to 1.02
- Madcowz, on 10/10/2007, -13/+1$100... who in their right minds would pay that for a hack.
Oh, it's an Apple story- Madcowz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0Sorry guys, no idea how that double submitted.

- Madcowz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0Sorry guys, no idea how that double submitted.
- ivorylion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It's only $50.00 if you buy the unlock from the Australian retailer.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats $50.00 too much.
- hourog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's a LONGGG flight from Texas :-)
- l33tsauce, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5including the $100 unlock fee, the 8gb UNLOCK version of the iphone will cost $500. A VERY small price to pay for a phone as impressive as the iphone. People needs to remember there are 6 billions other people outside of the US and their only way of using an iphone is to unlock it. In Asia & Europe, people are more than happy to pay $500 for an unlock Iphone.
- locojones, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2*****. Nobody in Asia or Europe is going to pay anything for this silly little toy. Not when kids in Korea have phones that can do 4 way video conferencing on the go.
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -15/+5Maybe I'm just "lucky" since I am already an AT&T subscriber... but what the hell? Verizon is the only company that could give AT&T any competition, and that is because they are slightly more evil than evil. But, why not just go with AT&T? The iPhone is self-crippling on other networks. No visual voicemail, no enhanced data plan, absolutely no support.... Even if I hated AT&T (right now, it's just a large about of dislike), I still couldn't imagine taking my iPhone to another network, where it would be handicapped.
Support call: Thank you for calling T-Mobile, how can we help you?
You: Yeah, uh my iPhone...
Support: I'm sorry sir/madaam/puppy, we do not support non-authorized vendors or some such. Apple probably wouldn't/couldn't let them until the contract is up.
Or, how about this?
Support : Thank you for calling Applecare, how may I placate you?
You: Yeah, my iPhone suxxors. No visual voicemail, the internet settings blow, and T-Mobile just ass-raped me on internet charges.
Support : Sir, did you actually just use the term "T-Mobile". We don't support that. Go get ass-raped by a gerbil. Also, don't come back until you have accepted Steve Jobs as your personal savior.- neiltc13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Have you ever tried Orange, Vodafone or Telstra?
No?
Why make such a lame comment about the US only then? - Raydr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You tried just a little too hard.
- neiltc13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Have you ever tried Orange, Vodafone or Telstra?
- rebotfc, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3This has got to be one of the worst pieces of tech 'journalism' I've ever read. Full of factual errors ( How many correctional updates do you want to make ?? ) and making a libelous statement about another website.
Engadget and all the other tech blogs are full of *****. - l33tsauce, on 10/10/2007, -7/+0just wait until people upload the unlock program on to limewire :)

- Oobitsa, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2While I understand that folks outside the US are eager to get an iPhone, I can't understand why folks in the US would pay an additional $100 to be able to use their iPhone on a network even more inferior to AT&T. Imagine, les s coverage, no visual voicemail. What a winner.
- mserna23, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1What type of of internet service does t-mobile provide for the iPhone?
- l33tsauce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0edge?
- hifiDesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1From what I've read, they have limited EDGE coverage across the US, and you can probably get some form of a data plan for as low as about $5.99/month (this was posted in a forum, so YMMVG) and I read that other people were tossing around the idea of getting a "Sidekick" data plan that was an additional $20/month.
- mserna23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hmm, thanks guys. I'll have to check that out.
- mehan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1lol, more raep
- javajockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wow, I'm surprised that T-Mobile is not on the list of current retailers that sell the Unlocking software
- shdwghst457, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0i know people that work for t-mobile and the iphone is only at&t-only for the beginning, and only in the US. in germany, t-mobile is going to be the initial carrier of the iphone, and t-mobile US will get the iphone probably in a couple months. i suggest just waiting.
- sigintop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4A few questions:
1. If you move to a different carrier, does it support visual voicemail?
2. Are there companies offering lowering than $60+ per month on service?- Branden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+71. No.
2. Matters where you live/what you want for service.- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Basically, no and no. T-Mobile is the only other carrier in the US that's really worth looking at. It will cost the same, if not more, all else equal as it can be. You will not have access to visual voicemail, nor the 850MHz band—so reception will be decreased. The EDGE network on T-Mobile is also significantly slower, about 40% the average datarate you'd get with AT&T.
AT&T sucks, but it's the best of all evils.

- su1man, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1heres a response...learn how to read FAQ
- Branden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+71. No.
- mateo60, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2$100?? No thanks.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6hmm this is tempting. Anyone know if it is possible to restore the iPhone back to original (pre-hack) in case you need to bring it in for warranty repairs?
I read that this software survives a restore, so I'm not sure how you'd get rid of it?- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"I read that this software survives a restore, so I'm not sure how you'd get rid of it?"
Simple, install the 1.0.3 update that Apple will release in about 4 hours...- Dejital, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Check out Engadget's video walkthrough. At the very end, they reverse the process and reactivate the AT&T SIM card, so yes you can restore quite easily.

- su1man, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1uh yeah..I'd never pay a $100 for some unlocking software...waiting for someone to make a keygen+ torrent that bitch :-) unlocking should be free or atleast reasonable like $25 bucks a popl
- Enuratique, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Sadly a key generator would do nothing in this case. Clearly these hackers are clever (but not infallible). From my understanding of things, when you buy an unlock code from one of these resellers, you also provide the phones serial number and other unique identifiers along with your credit card. Once payment goes through, the reseller will then register your phone's information with iPhoneSimFree. The software, when run on the iPhone, will then contact iPhoneSimFree's server, sending it those unique identifiers (they can be queried via the phone's system API). iPhoneSimFree's server will verify that these unique identifiers have been uploaded to their server and will then send some form of OK status code. My best guess is that the machine level instructions to unlock the iPhone are already in the binary they send you - it just needs approval from their servers to execute it. If I were an iPhone hacker, this would be my starting point - especially if you can attach a debugger to the iPhone and see what instructions are being run once an OK message is received from their servers. I highly doubt (though after watching the videos of the unlocking process from yesterday) that they send executable code to the phone on the spot, though perhaps there is some kind of algorithm that needs to be crunched (assuming the unlock code is somehow linked to the phone's serial number). Long story short, they were smart to keep themselves as ultimate arbiters of the unlocking process since its release on BitTorrent is completely inevitable nowadays.
- aaronmcdonald, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thnk its quite a good offer, $100 seems alot but over here in the UK its only £50 which sounds alot nicer plus if I get an iPhone from the US now it is only £200. So I would pay £250 to have an 8GB iPhone fully working in the UK before anyone else, yes!
- fentoger, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0Yeah, baby. Soon I'll buy IPHONE
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Maybe you should buy english lessons first.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I totally read that out loud in some intense Russian-English accent.
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Hey Apple guys, read the "TOU", and do the right thing for Steve and make him proud.
- franciscovaldez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It doesn't look like it's avialable yet
This from the site: "The company we are working with to bring you the unlocking solution for your iPhone is not ready yet. We are not certain of a date yet to give you of when it will become available. We are working as diligently as possible to make sure that it is ready for you as soon as possible." - valenciastudent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Thanks http://iphoneworldwideunlock.com/, here's my $50.59. Thanks for making my day.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd love to hear how the rest of your day goes when you realize they are taking orders but the product is not out yet.
- Aleks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15I think I'll just wait for the cracked torrent. What's next a warez group asking $200 for the adobe cs3 keygen?
I buy all my mac software but asking $100 is just as bad as NBC asking $5 for a tv show.- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1NBC, buys shows not sell
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2.... what?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Dammit, stupid double-post. Digg this one down.
- neiltc13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The difference between the Adobe analogy and this really is that here you're paying for months of hard work to do something which doesn't involve stealing from other people.
- Proctor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Which should be open source.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Which could possibly be at double where it is now if they opened that *****.

- lornefs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I almost can't wait to hear all the crying and whining by all of you people when you shell out a $100 and then Apple disables the unlock with the next update.
- dognose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5WARNING! "The software has not been released yet, so we are taking pre orders of this and ordering in bulk the licenses from iPhoneSimFree. When the orders are confirmed we will be servicing out Ebay customers and also reselling the software from this site using Paypal and Credit Card Payments. "
Could this go down as the biggest scam in history when they are shut down before they deliver to "retail" customers? Ok, maybe not the biggest, but, still, big. -
