- FatCake, on 10/10/2007, -13/+195At least its not a big ass table...
- dgblackout, on 10/10/2007, -1/+153damn that's one well put together fan video.
- rubikfreak, on 10/10/2007, -7/+89Honestly, this would probably fail, but I think the ad is brilliantly well made.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -22/+97I just don't understand why you would want that. Is there something wrong with the mouse? Do you like tired arms? What is the advantage?
- Jedeye459, on 10/10/2007, -1/+61Im not going to argue if it is a good or bad concept, but the video is great! I love the part where it rotates into view!
- rdw1809, on 10/10/2007, -3/+56Wow.. a really well done little add, the song, plus the quick reveal and sweep... fantastic... whoever made this has a future in advertising, but I definitely agree with a few of the other comments, an iMac where you have to reach out and hold your arms up to open an app or expand a window is a really bad idea.. who the hell is going to want to do that? No, the design of the iMac must change to allow this UI to make any sense. When this touch interface thing does actually come to iMac's, I would suspect that it'll be something quite different than what we've grown used to on personal computers over the last 20 or so years, for mac books on the other hand I think it'll be a simple and obvious integration of the multi-touch UI, but I really can't see desk top computers being quite like this.... ***** amazingly well done still.
- bradallen18, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48it would be nice for graphic design if you could lay it down flat and 'draw' on it.
- fenix61, on 10/10/2007, -6/+47I already hate fingerprints on my screen and it's not even touch screen
- plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35I like that fake ad. Congrats to the author. "Wouldn't it be nice if the authors of the iPhone also made a computer ?" that's going to be my signature from now on.
- Tivor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32Dugg because it's a really well-made fan video.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33Also, if it was truly designed like that, I can easily see the display being pushed off the table it's sitting on.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18While I'm not that big a fan of touch screens implemented in desktop devices, I must say...that is one snazzy-looking iMac.
Video's pretty well done, too. Especially for just a 3-day project. - DaleoftheUK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Imagine if the makers of the iPhone made a computer....now that's just crazy.
- tracydanger, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Why can't it have multi-touch and a mouse. It seems, according to everyone's comments, that if you have multi-touch, then you have to get rid of the mouse and keyboard. I could see having both. Maybe you could use the multi-touch along with an icon-based UI for multimedia or something or for using in the kitchen when you don't want to get your keyboard messy making dinner, but you do want to get the screen messy.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18yeah... but I don't think Surface is really supposed to replace the desktop pc, it's just not nearly efficient enough....
- opusaz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Oh, I see your problem. You're expecting diggers to act rationally. Yeah, you'll have to get over that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20I think it's way better looking than the current iMac design. Outstanding job on the commercial!
- PixelVision, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16you wouldn't want that. Touch screen systems are overrated and impede productivity for the majority of actions, especially normal, everyday things. There's a video of somebody playing an RTS game using one and it looks ridiculous, the most obvious problem (apart from tired arms) is that your hands cover up what you need to be looking at. Touch-screens are ideal only for specific uses (mobile devices, kiosks, graphic design, etc.), not everyday computing usage.

/scanner on - aldenhg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Yeah, touch displays seem best fitted for mobile devices. An onscreen touch keyboard will never be as easy to use as a real keyboard. Not to mention the repetitive stress injuries that you would get from using only a touch interface. One of the reasons ergonomic keyboards feel better to use is that the keys have a little more travel and hit the bottom a little softer. Take that away and you'll be in carpel tunnel braces in no time.

- realnebby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I don't think that mutli-touch would replace the mouse and keyboard on a desktop. If it was a dockable tablet that could work basically like a desktop while on the stand, but be removable, so you can use it around the house/office as a tablet with multi-touch.
- manoftheisland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11yeah its cool..... but does it blend?
- jasontm1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Absolutely wonderful job!!!! Disregard the comments from people who seem to have missed that the ad was your project and not designing the next iMac.
- opusaz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Sometimes I use keyboard shortcuts and sometimes I use the mouse. It's nice to have the choice.
I had a touchscreen on my work computer for a year because of a project I was working on. Sometimes I used the touchscreen for normal use instead of keyboard shortcuts or mouse. Again, it was nice to have the choice and I miss it now it's gone.
I'm not saying everyone will want touchscreen. All I'm saying is, from experience, a touchscreen can sometimes be useful. No way it'll replace keyboard shortcuts or the mouse, obviously, but choices are good.
OK, you can bury me now. - Rodzirra, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That was a brilliant reveal! And showing off so many multi-touch features in just a couple of seconds... Wow. Get thee to an advertising agency!
- plagiats, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11To crazymaniacc : pay attention to details, rewatch the video and you'll see white spots on the screen appear like on iPhone commercials. Sure, a true commercial would have insisted a bit more on the touch screen aspect, but come on. In 3 days? He deserves a real "Woaw". Not to mention the choice of the soundtrack "Touch me baby, don't you see I'm not afraid ? What's the promise that you made ?" That fits perfectly and I am no apple fanboy. Just give credit to the author for his work.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Hmmm...it would be the same cost (or less) as the Wacom Cintique...but you would also get a computer, and not just a peripheral that attaches to a computer.
Sounds like a good deal to me, I'm in. - anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The iPhone gets around it by using a big sheet of glass and an incredibly bright screen. Turn your phone off and look at all the smudges; turn it on and the screen just burns right through them.
Big LCD displays typically use plastic, which is less transmissive than glass, so smudges and stuff show up better. - whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I agree with the practicality comments, but that video is pretty friggin cool. Nice work! I like how 3D the OS looks (exposé, in particular).. like a natural update to the existing OS. The screen bezel looks nice, too. We have some tablet style computer screens (not tablet computers) at my work.. some of the Illustrators use them. I think it would be cool to have something like an arced monitor stand, where you could use your mouse, most of the time, with the monitor in the regular vertical position and then it could glide down, into a horizontal position for multi-touch or stylus input. Everyone talking about fingerprints doesn't realize that we may not have reached the pinnacle of screen technology quite yet. I look forward to a day when screens pick up as many fingerprints as my blankets or shirts.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8The existence of a "videos" section is a perfect example of intrinsic versus extrinsic meaning. Yes, it's a video. Fine. That's a property of the thing itself. But what does it mean? What's it about? Those are properties external to the thing itself.
Classified things on Digg by "pictures" or "videos" or whatever is like sorting the books in the library by the colors of their covers. - phoomp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8"doesn't get *too* smudgy"? On a monitor, *any* smudgy is too smudgy.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/index.cfm
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Well Done. Cant wait for those multi touch macs!
The touch screen on the iphone is optical glass and doesnt get too smudgy, they should use that on the monitor face too.
Ill definitely buy one of these mockups rather than a 10,000 microsoft coffee table. - DarknessGP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5spltterboy, multitouch != finger touch. You can use a stylus with a multi touch. Multi-touch just means that the input device accepts multiple inputs at one time. It has no bearing on what you are using to touch the device. People need to get that idea out of their head, regular touch can use fingers, multi-touch doesn't have to use fingers.
- ikickass, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6so? use glass on a big LCD and have it really bright.
- sliggy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7The iPhone has gotten around this, why not an iMac too?
- KZeni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Thing is, how would they make it cost any less... and how sensitive would the pressure sensitivity be on something like this if they make it on the cheap?
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I wonder if Incase will make a big rubber case for that iMac so it will match my iPhone...
- Amplix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yes, I'm not much for the touch screen aspect but that iMac concept looked gorgeous.
- delhokie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6If you look further on the site, he even set up an Apple-esque web page to highlight the video (www.dogsolitude9.com/imac). Really well made! If you get a chance, click on the WWDC link and there's a short video he made (Locked in Space) that's pretty funny and shows some of his other skills.
- wilhoitm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5We will see these this coming Tuesday!
- RyGonWan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Just to throw this out there. A Multi-touch iMac would still have a keyboard and mouse. When the mouse was adopted no one stopped using the keyboard to type. The iMac is not a portable device so Multi-touch would be in addition to other input options rather then in place of them like in the iPhone. The iPhone UI is more of a continuation of the trackpad solution, which replaced the mouse in portables due to portability problems.
- drgmdp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5i'll hire you. it looks like you love working for free so there will be no problem between us.
- basye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This would be perfect with a touchpad keyboard/surface, ala Nintendo ds lite. I wouldn't want to touch the screen because of prints, however.
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7This message brought to you by HandiWipes™ - Screen Cleaning Disinfecting Wipes.

Here comes the Lay of the dorritos! - vertinox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Lay of the dorritos!
- moofer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4So you would like to hunch over your desk all day? I like being able to walk upright too much.
- Calcularius, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I only notice the fingerprints on the iPhone when it's off.
