- jasegruver, on 11/16/2007, -1/+15Thank God. I can't believe Apple released a machine with this kind of bug and then took so long to fix it. It's been driving my roommate crazy. Leopard has been a lot better for him, but under Tiger the machine froze multiple times a day. We're talking hard lock ups. He would move his mouse to the dock and it would freeze. Only a forced reboot would get it going again.
- autoy, on 11/16/2007, -0/+10Err... update the firmware.
- colincornaby, on 11/16/2007, -1/+9Um, the 1900xt is much faster than the Radeon 2600.
- mulling, on 11/16/2007, -4/+11Apple hardware is not any better than generic PC hardware. In my experience it's been worse, and I mean much worse, but then the overall design kicks ass. It's maddening as hell. My MacBook Pro has been garbage, but I still can't stomach going back to windows. My iPhone has *knock on wood* been orders of magnitude beyond other phones. When they do it right, they do it really, really right, but Apple is still very far from perfect.
- threemagic, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Right.. because overheating can be solved by a firmware update?
Sometimes blind hatred is just retarded. - insomniacal, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6From a new 20" iMac owner who hadn't yet seen the freezes but was worried anyway: HOORAY! My firmware upgrade is already installed.
- steviedoodle, on 11/16/2007, -6/+11Congratulations, you now have been blacklisted by all the apple geek elitist pigs, due to the fact that they can't take the slightest criticism without going on a rampage. Have fun.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5In what way is the MBP "faster" than MP?
- threemagic, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4he's mad because it's not newer.. newer is ALWAYS better. :)
- threemagic, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5When the criticism is a well thought out critique sure... this was just a penis being a penis.
- danielwsmithee, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4From my experience in the windows world this would have never gotten fixed, because it would represent about 0.5% of a single manufacturers output so they most likely wouldn't even notice. With Apple they only really have like 4-5 configurations so a problem with one of them always gets noticed and fixed. You may feel that it is a disadvantage because you don't have choice. I prefer the stability and support.
- ghaerdon, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5My 24" iMac has crashed 3x since installation of these patches. Each time I was running iTunes with my iPod Touch. No probs with Leopard... until now. As a recent switcher I feel like I'm back with Vista. I'm slightly pissed. Let's see how long my machine works this time. Stay tuned.
- Solkre, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4You are trying to take a jab at Vista. Did you intend to do this?
- lochness, on 11/16/2007, -3/+7You can't believe it... ?!?!?! You haven't been an Apple customer for very long then :-)
- danielwsmithee, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Sounds to me like it is broken take it in and get it replaced.
- 4lun, on 11/16/2007, -2/+5A firmware upgrade is news?
- Francky, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4I meant, faster graphically. I do 3D work and I would LOVE to be able to add a current generation graphic card in what is supposed to be their top of the line machine :(
What I find dumb is that if I was to setup a hackintosh, I could have the same spec but then add a 8800. Crazy that I can't do that in THE real machine, lol (because of the EFI/Bios issue) - ChumpChief, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3If they were smart, they would include some kind of error message so you would actually be able to diagnose the problem when it locked up. Just don't put it on a blue screen, because that's evidently when a lockup goes from being acceptable to an indicator of shoddy code.
- threemagic, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3You can... it is pcie after all... it's that the card will not work correctly in OS X since it's firmware will not be compatible.
You can install any graphics card you want and still boot into windows without an issue. - alperea, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3Firmware upgrade? Macs just work darn it. You don't need to do anything. Just plug it in and it works. I'm tired of all these lies on the internets.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -2/+4I received an update a little over a week ago for the same issue. What does this new one do?
- threemagic, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3I don't know.. probably the same reason people by Lexus? And no.. my Mac Pro was not 80% more. It was actually 30 percent LESS than the exact same model at Dell.
- Topher06, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3Mac User: "I have been waiting for this update to download, but the progress bar hasn't moved from 40% for, like, 4 hours"
Mac Tech Support: "Um....." - MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1You forgot to wave your arm in a Jedi-like fashion so therefore I see you.
- MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1If this didn't fix your problem keep sending to Apple explaining your problem. Keep up the pressure. You've spent good money on your Mac and deserve better performance.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1its the hardware not the software....are we talking about windows still?
- unclejimbo88, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1If this is firmware upgrade 1.0, the doesn't that mean that it released in beta?
- flipmeat, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Apologies if you've already been down this road... If you buy a USB HD and plug it in, Macs will usually just mount them and use them, even though they are formatted FAT32 at the factory. If you have not formatted the disk as HFS+, it might make it more difficult for the Airport to recognize the device. Plug the drive into your Mac directly, run Disk Utility, choose Erase. Eject the drive, disconnect, then mount on the Airport to try again. Visit apple.com/support and read the airport discussion board if you need more help.
- TeamWookie, on 11/16/2007, -1/+2i cant remember the last time my home pc froze and i've been on vista for 6 months and all my hardware is overclocked but i do remember my mom's imac locking up on me and i only used it for a few minutes. i built that home machine using quality parts but a lot of computer manufactures including apple are using cheaper and cheaper parts cause price and performance specs are more important than quality in today's market. do you really believe apple can drop the prices of their products while maintaining higher quality hardware than it's pc equvilants? the imac is actually priced lower than it's pc equivalants and apple was able to do that because they put the cheapest chinese hardware they could find in it. apple is cutting prices so they can sell huge volumes and compete with PCs directly. if they dont start changing things then they will lose the goodwill of their base and be in big trouble, least on the computer side of their business. people dont seem to care if their ipod breaks after a year or two(or any mp3 player for that matter) so i bet they can get away with making low quality ipods for awhile.
- Bostocks, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1This didn't fix my imac. Freezes drawing with openGL in Maya.
- schoate09, on 11/16/2007, -5/+6No, Apple shoved a desktop card into a tiny case with a lack of airflow.
Fixed that for you again. - MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1No, you've been too busy saying that your Mac Pro sucks, your Airport Extreme sucks, and now iPhoto sucks. Apple does have problems and they certainly are not perfect, but if you claim to be having all these difficulties, why do you keep buying Apple products?
My Airport Extreme wouks flawlessly, I have a 500gb drive connected and it's great. Don't have a Mac Pro, but I'll trade you for a 933Mhz G4. Lots of video upgrade cards for that. Have a MacBook Pro? I'll trade you for a 933 G4 iBook that has been rock solid for almost 5 years.
Maybe it's just you? - shodanx, on 11/16/2007, -3/+4this never happenned, and I .. was never here
- pfromg, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1yes, I will admit that i've been bitching rather more than I should be. But there are frustrating issues that i've come across in my relatively short mac life , that have managed to make my blood boil. And I'm not far enough along that Apple road yet , to be classified as a fanboy. When something sucks , (and thats what iphoto does (and infact this entire dot mac scam)) , im still able to objectively see this and express it as such.A freedom which many mac fans are no longer able to excersize.
- ghaerdon, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1I'm a "switcher" that reference alone is a jab at Vista. On the good side my iMac hasn't crashed since those initial 3 crashes. Funny i wonder what was going on with my system.
- lochness, on 11/16/2007, -7/+8Get a Mac.... They Just Work*
* (fine print: when/if Apple gets around to (a) denying there is any problem (b) acknowledging there is a "small" problem that "may affect some users" (c) acknowledging there is a widespread problem (d) eventually getting around to releasing a patch for a problem that every other manufacturer seems to catch during beta testing. (e) We are Apple... Our Paying Customers are our Beta Testers - inactive, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Seems the Mac Pro is due for a refresh shortly... better G cards...
- troye, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Haha Apple boy
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+2yhea by basically underclocking the graphics card. i would be very very interested to read bench mark result of the mac, one with update and one without.
- troye, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1WHAT! Which Dell was that? Please post a link.
- troye, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1linux froze on me ONCE in a two year period! you must now worship the penguin >:)
- troye, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Join us at the Linux camp, and have a tasty cup of Ubuntu coffee. And I swear, Ubuntu will never do you wrong baby (after you configure it) ;)
- Konformitee, on 11/16/2007, -2/+2So, you bought an expensive Mac Pro that is supposedly expandable, but you can't replace the video card in it with something newer? That seems silly. Even my Linux box can run the newest Nvidia graphics cards. You can't just swap in a new Nvidia card?
- knightboat, on 11/16/2007, -3/+3No, he's getting buried because the same line is used at least a few times in every single Apple patch story that ever gets posted on Digg. It has nothing to do with Apple fanboyism and everything to do with it being an old joke that wasn't ever funny or incisive.
- Koski, on 11/16/2007, -6/+6Finally! Was about friggin' time!
- Timan, on 11/16/2007, -6/+6This firmware update did not fix freezing under bootcamp. You still can not play "games" or anything "video heavy" without it locking up. Which is a let down, upgrading from the previous intel macs which had no problems gaming.
No freezing in Leopard though which is good but can be boring at times... ^^ - pfromg, on 11/28/2007, -3/+3My airport Extreme doesn't find any USB HD I attach to it , how/when do they plan on fixing that ?
- MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -1/+1It's linked to macrumors.com, not to his personal blog and he has a grand total of one friend and one fan. Maybe you shouldn't view Apple posts if they make you so angry.
- Arramol, on 11/16/2007, -2/+1Of course, if they did front-page Windows updates, all the Mac users would be commenting about how Windows sucks to need updates to work correctly...never mind that apparently OS X does too.
/not trying to troll, but DANG I can't stand fanboys, regardless of what brand they support - ogore, on 11/16/2007, -3/+2If you read the article it was ATI card that was just having some teething problems
