iLife '08 users get free iMovie HD Download
apple.com — New iLife '08 users can download iMovie HD directly from Apple's website for free (If they want to use the old "real" iMovie).
- 797 diggs
- digg it
- skoot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Whew, I thought I was going insane when I couldn't find plugins, transitions, or my old projects in their edited forms. click, DOWNLOAD!
- gravis86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Actually, if you are upgrading from iLife '06 it keeps the old version of iMovie HD in a folder titled "iMovie (previous version)" in Applications. This way you don't have to download it.
- fribhey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5from my understanding, the last version of iMovie 6 was 6.03, the download on apple's site is 6.04.... so it may be worth downloading
- tsunamisteve, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19No one said change is easy. Part of the problem might be that people think they want iMovie but really want Final Cut Express. iMovie 08 has to exist for moms and dads, skateboarders, and myspace teens. Prosumers or probably most Digg users are better off with Final Cut Pro or Express. Of course, for sure by April next year this should all be in Final Cut. The live video industry has a lot to gain from "skimming" and the general interface from yeah, iMovie.
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6final cut express has a learning curve much larger than imovie, they need to add some more tools to make it simpler before it can replace imovie.
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lots of people are upset with the new iMovie app. Engadget has some comments: http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/09/how-would-you-change-imovie-08-special-emergency-software-edit/
- obey43, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1where are all the videoFX's? that was the best thing about making my ***** slideshows and movies somewhat bearable to watch.
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One thing that's suddenly pissing me off is that quicksilver pulls the old one when I type "iMovie" It would've made more sense to call it iVideo (or iMovie) express or something.
- mediaphile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Give QS a few minutes to update its catalog. It probably just doesn't see it yet. If that's not the case, you can always give extra weight to the new one, and devalue the old one.

- humperdeath, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2My iLife is iHell. Yesteday, iI went to the iStore to get some iFood. the iMeat section was crowded with other iHoles, but iI finally got some iChicken. Then some iMilk and iBread snd other iSorted iItems. The iLine was long, so I went to the iSelfServe and paid with my iATM card. So thats it. have a nice iDay.
Anymore i******* and i'll iVomit!- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Maybe you should iBuy some iAirsickness iBags?

- humperdeath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey guys, I figured I get dugg down with such a comment in an obviously 'Apple' thread, but come on, look at what's happenning. The slogan is "Think Different" so, lets get some new themes. Pick a different letter already! (PS. IBM already had an 'i' long time ago, the best computer system out there is the iSeries!)

- t3714, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1I have mixed feelings about this, actually. With the previous versions of iMovie, people still managed to make their movie look like everyone elses. Maybe they should try the new templates before going back to low-quality video and wobbly text on black.
- terinjokes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There are those of us still running on older Apple computers, and can't run the current version of iMovie. This includes me, as I run a iBook G4 - August 2005. Then again, I currently have no version of iLife, didn't come with my mac. I was going to get iLife '08 until I learned that the new iMovie wouldn't work...
- persept, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3All macs come with iLife, it's pretty much impossible for you not to have gotten it. And even if you didn't you still own a copy from the time you bought your computer
- informality, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Impossible? Some Macs are second-hand.
Especially older ones.
- sonofalink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There are no new templates... actually there are no templates at all.
Kinda the whole point of having iMovie '06 to download. - ThreeDee912, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wobbly text? Make sure you actually exported the movie in the right format... The preview window is, well only a low-quailty preview.
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iMovie HD is much better for my needs. It just works easier for the type of movies I make.

- kygeographer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Um, don't you mean Steve?

- Kyderdog, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3Whats System 7?
- terracottapai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Some youngins seem to have missed the joke..
- mdoom, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5And I was looking forward to running iMovie on my System 7.5.3 PowerMac 6400...
The good old days...- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3You mean the days of function over form? I miss them too :(
- Kyderdog, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3Whats System 7?
- Rice, on 10/10/2007, -8/+7I'm really angry that the timeline view is gone in the new iMovie. I feel like it's a complete downgrade.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'll hold off on judging iMovie 08 until I can try it myself. For what it's worth, I think the timeline view (a basic concept for almost every digital movie editor on either Mac or Windows) is a great way to edit your content. It's hard to tell exactly how the new one operates from just the videos online.
- cwoolf34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I use FCP, but I picked up the new iLife for the new iPhoto mainly. I tried out iMovie and I must say it takes some getting used to , but it is an amazing app, that is a big leap and it really does speed up the process a lot. I just wish Apple put the skimming into FCS 2. Maybe they will announce a free download for FCS 2 owners that adds skimming features due to the demand?
- thunderer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You already can, to some extent.
Right click on the header of any column except "Name" in the Browser, and select "Show Thumbnails". Click and drag the thumbnail right to skim through a clip.e If you want to re-set what the thumbnail normally shows when not being dragged, then press and hold control after you start dragging, but before releasing the mouse.

- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Just out of curiosity (I already have iMovie HD) does it do any check to see if you have iLife '08 installed, or is it basically available to anyone?
- hollywoodphony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nope, I tried it. It checks to see if you have iLife '08 first. I am still using the crappy iMovie copy that came with 10.2 before they made iLife seperate.
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2well, i don't *think* iMovieHD (aka iMovie06) will run on OS X 10.2 anyway. usually iLife wanted a pretty new OS upgrade. oh wait, i hope i misread your post and you are not still using 10.2! features aside, 10.3 was a huge speed jump for me on my old G4 tower.
- hollywoodphony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nope, I run Tiger, but when I installed it, it left the version of iMovie from 10.2 intact.

- mallardtheduck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It checks during install, but that check can be easily circumvented using Pacifist. Free iMovie for me!

- thickdrummer, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5Surely this is because...
"iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster). "
Anyone else think this is a pretty high requirement for iMovie?
I mean, it's just iMovie!- Gundark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's pretty processor intensive. I watched the demo Steve Jobs did and you can scrub through any video clip just by waving your mouse over it. I don't imagine that comes cheap (speaking of processor cycles).
- darkamster07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you are probably right, from what I saw of the app, it takes a lot of juice to produce all those fancy features, I mean you still have to support people like me who are running Tiger on ancient G4s, or worse. Still, good move, I think.
- rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1i have a g4 and iMovie HD ,sucks, freezes and even the original iMovie freezes, dont know why it was even invented for mac, there just too power processor hungry for any purpose except 3 or 4 clips and 1 music track.
- mtusk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I use iMovie HD on my iBook G4 to create and edit 1 hour and longer videos. No crashes or freezes.
- kaaBOOM, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Agreed. What pisses me off is that my Dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 is not supported. While an iMac G5 1.9 GHz is supported. Wasup with that? A dual 1.8 G5 pwns a single 1.9 G5 any day, for video editing or anything else. WTF were they thinking when they made those specs. Looks like they just pulled those requirements out of their ass.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It might be the graphics card is insufficient (I have no idea what the two systems would minimallly have), or simply that it hasn't been verified to work. You might just try it.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1because threading code doesn't come naturally?
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not supported does not always mean it won't work. the way Mac systems come out, and older PowerMac is going to be a lot faster than the same speed processor in an iMac/iBook. they are probably trying to make it as unconfusing as possible.
i was able to shoehorn an old garage band on an older unsupported Mac. i didn't try to do crazy processing or effects, but wanted it on an old ibook so i could use it to record. easier than lugging around a tower.- thickdrummer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1True, but I remember when Aperture was released and if you didnt have the stated minumum amount of RAM, it wouldn't install on your system. No shoehorning there, just no install.Period.
- mtusk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If your computer is "not supported" will it install anyway, or does it stop you right away?
- kaaBOOM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It might. I've now heard from some that they have successfully installed it on unsupported G5s. So I'll probably install it on my G5, after I upgrade to 10.5 Leopard in October.
Now the bigger problem seems to be the lack of features. With out a timeline viewer, or a good way to edit audio, I'm not exactly sure how useful it will be.

- MeneL001, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Now we are talking, Apple really got this one right. I appreciate this effort, now I don't have to keep my old copy of iLife '06 and sell it with my MacMini.
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2"Apple got this one right"? They tried rebuilding a popular program and failed to make it be "better" than the original so now the user has to have two copies of a similarly name app in order to get full functionality. How is that "getting it right". This is the kind of kick in the pants that makes people repeatedly aim for every chance they get if it happened on some competing OS.
Personally, I don't mind running both apps but I just can't buy the idea that they got it right in this case. - ShinRaTDR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I haven't tried the new iMovie, but it sounds like its a radical-yet-beneifical change, but with a higher learning curve, so apple offers the old app for free to ease the transition. So yeah, apple got it right.

- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -21/+4iDontcare :)
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7and you felt the need to make a stupid old comment without a hint of originality like this because...?
- GiJoeBob, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Why would you want to do this?
- ciano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The new iMovie is a completely new program. Some people might still want the old one.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Many people still using an older G4 Mac won't be able to use the new version. Apple doesn't have to make the older version available. It's a nice touch for people still on legacy machines.
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i don't know if the older machines will be able to use a lot of iLife08 though? i think this was more because iMovie08 is a totally new app, so there is a learning curve and the old plugins won't work.
- gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The new iMovie is great, but it doesn't (yet) allow plug-ins to be used, not to mention its a whole different program from iMovie HD. Many people want iMovie HD still available for their plug-ins, past video projects, etc.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll be speaking with Bruce Gee (of GeeThree software, makers of some of the best iMovie plugins) tonight on this very issue. I'm hoping that new versions of their plugins will be coming soon. GeeThree made updates of their packages compatible with the Intel Macs at no charge which was nice.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5namedropper.

- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1one of my friends ran out and got the new iMac. he has tons of experience with iMovie and Final Cut, but he (so far) hates the new iMovie. basically it confused him and something he should have been able to do in 5 minutes too him a loooong time.
it's totally a learning curve, but he lamented not having the old iMovieHD on his machine until he had time to really learn the new one, plus he had bought a few plug-ins that were effectively useless.
i know, you don't buy a new machine with new software when you have work. he uses them mostly to screw around with video. it's a nice touch. i am more curious than ever to play with it now, not that i ever used iMovieHD a lot.
- symes101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2What up with the version number it 6.0.4 and I checked for an update for my iMovie 06 and the latest it 6.0.3, So to people who have download is it new version?
- ShinRaTDR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's probably been updated so it can be installed individually, and to check for iLife 08, sounds like a x.x.1 upgrade to me.
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't understand why people would need to download this. I did the upgrade and I still have iMovie HD in a folder right under the new iMovie. It's also v. 6.0.4. I guess if you delete it?
- RunWithScissors, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12"iMovie HD users get free iLife '08 download" would have been a much better digg.
- o2o2o2o2, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3I have iLife 08 and it comes with iMovie 7.0. Why would I want to downgrade to 6.04?
- iSmart, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3here's your sign...
- kingyubba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6it's because the new iMovie won't run on a G4. :-(
- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Messed up isnt it? You buy a mac thats only a year or so old and it can't even run the new software, im in the same boat with a 17in powerbook ppc
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I would check solutions from other companies but I don't think they stopped chickening from Apple. AVID Free DV may work if you have 10.3.x but not sure about 10.4.x
http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp
(Freeware and the company is not a spammer in case they ask for your mail, it is AVID)
For DVD stuff, Roxio Toast Titanium does excellent job.
- THEMACGOD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That's good... as I don't have Intel Inside.
- shaiderh, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2IMOVIE 08 only works on the intel machines not on the power pc machines
so that is why they are giving out imovie hd for those who bought ilife 08 and were not able to use imovie 08- streak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Does iLife '08 also come with an Internet connection? ;-)
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I WILL BEAT YOU
- misbehavior, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You don't need an Intel machine, but it does supposedly require a G5.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305918 - pierrefilms, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5iMovie '08 DOES work on PowerPC. Get your facts straight. From the iLife page:
iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster).- macjools, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0IT DOES NOT! Get *your* facts straight. When you install iLife 08 on an PowerBook G4 (for example) it installs the other apps, but tells you that it cannot install iMovie 08 unless you have an Intel processor.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Does iLife '08 also come with an Internet connection? ;-)
- ...---..., on 10/10/2007, -4/+5I hate the new iMovie - I feel that it's a real dumbing down of some of the besty features of iMovie - not to mention all the great features that are just plain missing. I'm an apple fanboy to the hilt but this "upgrade" is pure garbage. The rest of the iLife apps are a good upgrade though. I'll be sticking with iMovie 06.
Apple must have known that this would happen - why else would the installer move the old app into a new folder and save it - as well as offer it as a download.
I'm very disappointed with this version.- jer.williams, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can you elaborate? What features are missing? I'm new to iMovie (but not to video editing) and this new version -- the way you skim through all the clips -- seems pretty innovative to me. Seems like you could make some pretty sweet home movies really quickly.
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What exactly happened with iMovie (and I'm not asking for a recap of someones caman islands trip epiphany)? I do see how iMovie 08 improves the speed of video editing but he omission of so many things important in iMovie 06 are just plain odd. Did they rush it out the door? Or maybe was this the reason iLife took so long?
It's just a bit confusing that now I have to manage two apps called iMovie because neither does everything I want. Maybe they should've called it something else to avoid the confusion. - nxtort, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2After using the new iMovie I can't see why someone would go back to iMovie HD, but it's nice of Apple to offer the software up. This software feels and runs like a pro app. Photographers are going to love the new Ken Burns controls. Its allot like final cut without the teeth pulling of iMovie.
- jamesburton1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I bought iLife '08 from the store today and it automatically kept a copy of iMovie HD in an "Old iMovie" folder under Applications.
So, what's this all about!? - MinnesotaTwins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can see where people still want some of the more advanced features without going all the way to a professional type software.
I personally love the new version. All I want to do is import my videos from my digicam and upload them to youtube. This new version makes this a breeze for me, and I love it. - toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0BTW, I bought iLife today.... it included a disk for iWork! Cool... don't have to DL it...
- dricci, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's just a trial. You can download the same thing from the website, however you need a valid activation key for it to load past 30 days.
- iapx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I am sad to see that buyer of Powerbooks, top-of-the-line professional notebooks (as Apple intend it), less than 2 years ago, is no more supported by Apple, even for it's mainstream products!
Giving away nearly $3000 for a powerbook, memory upgrade, disk upgrade and Apple Care, and now, my december'05 top-notch laptop seems just to be ignored by Apple.
This is an investment to buy a Powerbook, an investment that has a sense within a 3-years timeframe( for myself), but less than 2 years after it's availability, Apple drop support!- afwjam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2deal with it. In a lot of ways you are lucky cause my core duo has a lot of permanent issues.
- mtusk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That's Apple for ya.
- Chuck0078, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1just because one app won't run on a machine doesn't mean they "dropped support"
- FunkyG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The new iMovie is just different. As the keynote said, it allows a very quick and dirty video to be put together very quickly. I have to say I love the media browser aspect of it. It may not offer quite the control, but it's a whole lot easier to use for newbies and the utube generation.
As far as I can see Apple did a good thing. Gave us a new app for a new style of video editing, and at the same time also made sure that if you want more detail, you can have it with the previous version. - fooyonghwee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is great for G4 users too.
- EricG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sadly the one app I really wanted to use on my (not that old) G4 Mac Mini wont work.. iMovie.. I don't plan on doing HD video, I don't see why they can't enable to run on a G4 even if the performance is poor.. sad.
- StephenCIreland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1thank allah, its the only reason i was holding back on iLife 08, i need decent editing, i dont care about speed
- macfoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2been following a few support threads at Apple - alot of people are VERY unhappy with what Apple has done to the supposed "upgrade" of iMovie.
- mtusk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does iMovie 6 integrate nicely with the new iDVD 07? For instance, can you simply drag iMovie 6 project files into iDVD and it will recognize the video and chapters?
- mtusk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just found out it does not let you install iMovie at all if your computer meets the specs.
- Stockcerts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I am new to Imovie, but dissapointed when I saw there were limited transitions and no timeline interface. If I download 06 are there more transitions? Not sure how it's different from 08. Also, I sure hope that by downloading 06 it won't overwrite my 08 version. I probably think this way as I'm new to Macs...coming from the PC world. Thanks!
- dricci, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0On Mac OS X, apps can usually co-exist with different versions. However, because iMovie 08 is a complete re-write, installing 06 will not make that versions features work within 08.

- bigkevheck, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1You can download and install iMovie HD 6.0.4 from apple without having iLife '08. Simply use Pacifist from http://www.charlessoft.com/ to install it from the disk image you download from Apple's link. I was able to upgrade from iMovie 4 with no problems.
