How Apple just made all other mobile platforms irrelevant
ipodhacks.com — RIM, the "smartphone" industry, the PDA industry, and the handheld gaming industry just got served by Apple. The announcement of the forthcoming iPhone 2.0 update and the release of the SDK has made the iPhone _the_ platform of note for the enterprise, the causal user, and the mobile gamer. Jobs was right - this _is_ bigger than the Macintosh.

Hell yes. Interesting to see the comparative specs on the portable gaming devices. I still can't quite believe that the iPhone has both a higher resolution screen and a faster processor than a PSP, which is about twice the size!
Where iPhone 1.0 was a "mobile phone, but better" and faced subsequent competition from the likely candidates (Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc.) with "me too" campaigns: Nokia released 8GB music players, Sony Ericsson pushed their Walkman branded units, it's quite clear that when iPhone 2.0 comes out, these guys are going to be left in the dust.
Nokia has been pumping out the same old handset in slightly different cases for the past 10 years, while Sony Ericsson has had a few nice units (with regards to higher megapixel cameras, better music player integration) but neither of them have a legitimate response to the iPhone's gaming capabilities, enterprise integration, nor 3rd party developer community.
Yes, I know that Nokia has S60, and Sony Ericsson have recently announced defeat by adopting Windows Mobile in their very latest handsets, but to that I simply say: if S60 and Windows Mobile are so strong, then why haven't we seen anything truly noteworthy (Spore? SuperMonkeyBall? Front page news headlines?) as a result?
In summary, for all those Mac developers who labored with Objective-C and Mac development over the years, Apple has just handed us their thank you note: you are now first in line to develop for the most exciting platform out there. -
