- Bentleyk9, on 11/04/2009, -6/+71I won't get another iPhone if Apple finds a way to block jailbreaking.
- thaboosh, on 11/04/2009, -5/+48If i couldn't jailbreak my iPhone I would have to drop it and get a good phone.
- br0ken1128, on 11/04/2009, -0/+32I only know the reason I do it .. which is so I can use another network.
Otherwise, the main benefits for me are:
1. MMS - Jailbreak lets me enable native MMS, or let me use SwirlyMMS (1st gen iphone)
2. Firewall application
3. Ad blocking ( not asking for moral opinions, just saying )
4. Google voice app
5. QuickSMS (I can reply to SMS while staying in whatever app I have up)
6. Themes for springboard
7. Mods to add more than 4 rows of apps (up to 6 now with smaller icons)
8. Backgrounder, I can run more than one app at a time (playing music in lastfm while doing other things)
9. To sum it up ... freedom to do what I want with my device
There's a bunch of other tweaks and apps in cydia that just make the experience better..
Cydia is my preferred installer - pagno, on 11/04/2009, -13/+37I <3 Android.
- esc27, on 11/04/2009, -2/+26Apple is locked in a battle to control its software+hardware on all fronts: Jailbreaking, Palm Pre vs. iTunes, and Hackintoshes. It seems a growing number of users are rebelling against the tight-fisted control that defines Apple and makes its products work so well with each other. I wonder if this is a side effect of attracting so many PC (and other users used to having more flexibility...) during the Vista years.
- PanicAK, on 11/04/2009, -2/+24I miss the days when we actually had control over the things we buy. It seems like now we are just renting everything.
I have no use to jailbreak anyway, until they can come up with a way to drag and drop music files. I really hate iTunes. - Webjunkie, on 11/04/2009, -1/+22Dear Apple,
I will gladly stop jailbreaking my phone if you'll let me do four simple things. I want wallpaper in springboard. I want different dock appearance options. I want an email notification in the status bar. Lastly, I don't want to stop listening to an internet radio app in order to check my email or reply to a txt. Those are the only reasons I jailbreak my iPhone. My first gen iPhone had enough power to do all of this, and now my 3GS doesn't even break a sweat doing it.

Me - Bentleyk9, on 11/04/2009, -0/+18Probably something with Android. Don't get me wrong. I love my jailbroken iPhone, but I can't imagine being forced to go back to a non-jailbroken one.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -2/+20"However, as Apple continues to beef up security of the iPhone OS platform, jailbreaking may become a thing of the past."
This is precisely why common folk should never attempt to write articles on things they know nothing about.
Jailbreaking isn't going anywhere. At no point in history has anything been locked down and crack proof. Ever. - BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+17are you suggesting users actually want freedom to decide what they do with a product once they payed good money for it?
OUTRAGEOUS - dshPls, on 11/04/2009, -3/+18Installous.
- Zaxcomp, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14Jailbreaking wont become a thing of the past. Whatever apple does to stop them, you have to remember it was still all created and understood by humans, and there is no reason why someone equally as bright cannot come around and undo their work.
- ProjectGSX, on 11/04/2009, -2/+16The Motorola Droid is looking better every day. I love my iPhone, but Im getting sick if the appstore rejections, jailbreaking is illegal and atom processor blocking ***** Apple seems so infatuated with pulling on its customers.
- factsahoy, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14Apple has plenty of blunders to fix without dicking around with Flash.
The last thing anyone should do is encourage MORE use of Flash. Flash Web sites tend to be amateurish, cheeseball, and clumsy pains in the ass. And sadly they're often foisted on businesses that need their sites to be accessible from mobile devices, like restaurants, hotels, resorts, and boutiques. When you can't even find a business's locations from its Web site because that info is buried in an idiotic Flash animation, that business has squandered its main portal to the world. A portal that's nearly free! - AnthonyC, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14By the time they stop jailbreaking, if it happens, Android will have matured enough to become a viable option.
- nickmas, on 11/04/2009, -12/+25Hey Apple, why don't you hire an iPhone OS Platform Flash Manager. Seriously, not being able to look at flash websites in Safari is ridiculous.
- br0ken1128, on 11/04/2009, -0/+12I can't unlock without jailbreaking first ... I don't want to use AT&T, and I haven't since I got my 1st gen iphone a long time ago.
There's also some decent tools in cydia, such as the iphone firewall and the google voice app that apple rejected from the app store..
Bottom line though is if you have to ask that question, you don't know much about it. - dyranios2, on 11/04/2009, -2/+12http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/03/sony-ericsson-l ...
- lilrabbit129, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9crack proof? probably not. So annoying/difficult that people figure its not worth it? Entirely possible.
- unixfg, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9I assume you mean jailbreak, as carrier locking is a separate issue.
You don't have root access by default, and gaining root is the most comparable thing to jailbreaking. It's common on most of the Android phones, but I'm not sure it's been done on the Sprint and Verizon variety.
Replacing components with updated, newer versions from Google and some apps that modify the system require root. - dyranios2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9for me it's iBlacklist, an application which allows me to filter calls/sms messages, backgrounder (push notifications suck), a "flashlight" app that actually makes the screen brighter, skins...many more little tweaks that I would jump ship without a second thought if I lost them.
- ABreeman, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9This man speaks the truth! The Chipolte website is proof of unnecessary flash usage.
- leetleo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Customize, tweak, and add useful features like SBSettings, app categories, background apps, themes, tools, alternative mobile carriers, and a myriad of other things. Most importantly, you're free to run any code that Apple in their infinite wisdom might decide to reject. It opens the full potential of the device as a mobile computer instead of a locked down Apple console. I could not stand to use a locked down iphone at this point. It'd be nearly the equivalent of locking down my desktop machine in a similar capacity.
It isn't for everyone though, if you're a lite user who doesn't care about features it won't make a difference. - jjustin01, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Backgrounder for running apps in the background (don't mistake the luxury of background apps with push notifications)
Music Controls for running apps like Pandora, Slacker, Last.fm in the background, still being able to stream music and having iPod-like controls while in other apps.
I don't tether, but I listen to a ton of music while I'm programming and if I get a text or email, I shouldn't have to shut down my music just to respond. - mattsull, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10not being tied to the ***** ap store
- Bentleyk9, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Your stats are just for the US. Worldwide, 4 million people are running jailbroken iPhones. That's over well over 10% of all iPhones.
http://www.pinchmedia.com/blog/piracy-in-the-app-s ... - NJank, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9ahhh no concept of how digg works nice
- neutron7, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7Good luck with that "rogers and bell competing" thing. have you noticed your cable or satellite prices dropping because of competition? no i thought not.
- factsahoy, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8Wow, those are pretty lame requests.
How about
Third-party apps to be able to sync data with the computer, so we can have useful programs instead of more fart players?
Continual audible notifications when I missed a call, text, or voicemail. You know, like phones had 10 years ago? It's inexcusable that iPhone owners miss out on entire events because they don't know someone called them until the next day, when they go to use their phone for something and see they missed a call 12 hours ago. - revyn, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7Apple putting their deathgrip all over their products is good for competition.
- alexdrod, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7You should probably read what the guy said. He was speaking in relation to the idea of Jailbreaking becoming a thing of the past.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -2/+8I forgot that the moral crusaders are gonna be on a digg down fest for anyone with common sense.
"OMG Jailbreaking is soooo wrong!!"
(as they download music, tv shows, movies...) - inactive, on 11/04/2009, -5/+11Free apps. That's all I use it for, plus the ability to SSH in and store files.
All those stupid apps that you wasted money on... you no longer have to do that. Or the ridiculous companies who think they can charge $100 for turn-by-turn GPS software, hah. Just snag it.
Tons of customization.
If you like customization and control over the very device that *you* paid for, then there's no reason to NOT jailbreak. - jagnum1fan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6The newer 3GS models that came out are tethered. If you got it at launch its not.
- eiger003, on 11/04/2009, -3/+9OOoooooh.. Might be time to dump the iPhone.
Maybe if Apple gave the simple ablity for a home screen (Intelliscreen by Rock) or a way to categorize your apps (Categories on Cydia).
These 2 apps alone make the argument for Jailbreaking.
No Jailbreak along with way overpriced service from ATT.
Come on Apple quit acting like Sony. - MattB123, on 11/04/2009, -3/+8Or is it locked in the first place?
Although it seems like if Verizon sells it it's got be be crippled so they can nickel and dime you to do things like download your own photos. - schmidt349, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6Can you unlock an Android phone?
- jerrolds, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5off the top of my head
10. Alternative SMS Apps (I use BiteSMS - as you can bind photos to your contacts)
11. Skype over 3G (With an app on Cydia that makes your iphone think its on wifi even if it isnt)
12. MxTube - lets you download HIGH quality youtube vids - sobri, on 11/04/2009, -2/+7There were no days when you had control over phones.
- johnomaz, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5Damn straight. I hate apps that don't have trials. I've purchased way more apps because I've been able to see them in use before buying them.
- jagnum1fan, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5If apple would open the damn thing to customization and let me run things in the background I would have no need to jailbreak. Let me choose what I want to waste my battery on. Showing a little icon that I have an email would be quite nice and seems like it should have been around since 1.0 I uses bitesms to quick reply to a text which is a hell of a lot easier then quitting what I was in the middle of what I was doing to switch to that app. It's little things like that that I don't understand why apple hasn't implemented. They have no security flaws or consume battery any faster. I would love to hear the excuse.
- sqtab, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5It has nothing to do with Vista or any other OS.
People just want to be Free. - acehorne, on 11/04/2009, -0/+513. Cycorder (video recorder if you don't have 3GS)
14. Winterboard (kind of important for #6 if you don't make themes like I do)
15. IntelliScreen (I don't have it, but if I did a lot of business, I'd have it)
16. iBlacklist-make white and blacklists (works really well)
17. SBSettings (you get hands on ability to respringboard, turn on/off 3G, WiFi, EDGE, autolock, and control the processes on which I feel is essential if you use Backgrounder-allows you to free up memory)
18. PdaNet (tethering)
(Installous could be added, but it requires more steps such as adding hackulous to the repository etc. and it is outright stealing apps instead of allowing development for the iPhone)
But I'd say that I like Rock better (even though I installed both Cydia and Rock). It actually has a thumbnail of the thing you are looking at and it definitely way faster than cydia. - BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6it seems now that apple is finally swimming with the big boys their consumer group is shifting. suddenly their customers dont want to be confined by the product, which is remarkable since apple's major selling point is the merge of software and hardware.
i wonder whether this is a case of a large group of people (accidentally?) choosing a phone that is not right for their demands, or if apple made a gross misjudgment in their customerbase. - jonshipman, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Or android
- SurrealDream, on 11/04/2009, -2/+6I've been using my iphone as from the box for over a year now. Without getting a tonne of snarky retorts about my obvious idiocy blah blah, can someone please tell me what benefit I'll get from doing this (assuming I DON'T want to use another network and all I'm interested in are the platform applications).
Also, having glanced at the installation procedure, Cydia or Rock?
I'm genuinely interested here people, there's just a tonne of information to wade through. - ericfri, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5Yes to a degree, look at Satellite hacking. The smartcard encryption was made by humans, and so far, Directv (unless I'm out of the loop) has been down for a couple of years.
I love the idea of being optimistic and saying all will be ok, it will come again, but to a point it get's unrealistic. - Arkons24, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Apple has always been hurt by its communist approach to consumer electronics. Even though they have a stranglehold on the market right now it is only a matter of time before other companies that embrace more a more open environment catch up and consumers jump ship. In order to keep market share they have to keep out-innovating by very wide margins.
- lilrabbit129, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Its mostly a lot of customization. While it does seem nice at first, I've found that after a few weeks I really stop trying to "customize" my phone and just start using it. Thats why I decided jail-braking wasn't worth it to me.
Up to you though. - R3publican, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4My reasons:
