- mediamaker, on 04/15/2009, -1/+74sooner it's free of AT&T the better
- Richandler, on 04/15/2009, -3/+58Well if Apple wants a bigger market share they are going to have to get out of this contract. Verizon customers like myself refuse to do business with ATT.
- AmyVernon, on 04/14/2009, -3/+52I'm shocked. SHOCKED, I TELL YOU.
- phantasyhero, on 04/15/2009, -3/+33Exclusivity was a bad idea to begin with.
- cyphin6, on 04/15/2009, -0/+23I dream of the day I can buy a phone and use any sim card with it. DREAM
- badqat, on 04/14/2009, -3/+23I expect this to be a successful deal - although at&t will cede even more to Apple in the process. And I expect 2011 will see the birth of an iPhone LTE...which will be on both at&t and Verizon.

A trap because I have T-Mobile.... - ASfinkterSezWut, on 04/15/2009, -6/+21I would rather do business with Bernie Maddoff than with AT&T.
- ljdmd, on 04/15/2009, -1/+16Cant blame them
- geerlingguy, on 04/15/2009, -1/+15Please leave exclusivity behind. So many people would jump on the iPhone bandwagon if they weren't tied to the $80/month minimum, with no included texts. It's an *okay* rate in some markets, but in many, AT&T just isn't up to snuff.
- kinerry, on 04/15/2009, -2/+14good for at&t, bad for apple and customers
- antdude, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11Unlock to any carriers. :(
- pilotkid, on 04/15/2009, -0/+11Honestly am I the only one that doesn't mind AT&T? I have only had AT&T for six months but I really haven't had that bad of a experience. Yes, I do get a dropped call here or there, but spread far apart. Maybe one every two months, who cares? Before switching to AT&T for the iPhone last Sept. I had Verizon for 12+ years, yes, its true, I dont think I ever had a dropped call. The service was great, pretty much anywhere. However, I have traveled quite a bit to big and small cities and have always had service on AT&T, maybe not 3G but if I'm in the middle of the "boonies" and my car breaks down I dont care what "kind" of service I have. As long as I have it! I dont know maybe I'm just weird, but I have been happy with AT&T these last six months or so. I like the fact that I have a sim card that I can change to a different phone, I could use my phone abroad(GSM service), AT&T doesn't put they're ***** software on there like Verizon does, and I think its a small price to pay for a phone I really enjoy.
- Anfidurl, on 04/15/2009, -1/+12Moreover than that, Sprint customers like myself are network-incompatible with the current iPhone. The sooner this deal is over, the sooner I can buy myself one that'll work with my network of choice.
- RubberBinder, on 04/15/2009, -0/+10It will be renewed and it may be renewed again. Apple likes to keep complete control of the features their product has and AT&T adapted their network to fulfill some of these features(ie. visual voicemail) Apple wont go to another carrier unless the other carriers adopt the features required by the iPhone.
- kplo, on 04/14/2009, -1/+11Right? I thought they would've wanted to share.
- Thinkerofthings, on 04/15/2009, -2/+10I love the iphone, but I won't buy another as long as they are with AT&T. I'm out my contract now (early termination fee... it was worth it)
- kgdoom, on 04/15/2009, -1/+9AT&T is god friggin' awful. Apple would be doing right to find a better partner.
- jboitnott, on 04/15/2009, -3/+10Right. Sharing is just SUCH a characteristic of American corporate culture. (sarcasm) :-)
- cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -1/+8Any particular reason why? I wanted out of Verizon even before the iPhone simply because Verizon was being the most annoying about handset lockdown, data overcharging, and nickel and diming for EVERY damn thing under the sun...
Being a cell network fanboy makes even less sense than other stuff. - cadmiumpaint, on 04/15/2009, -1/+8I've been using Apple Products for over 15 years. I love them. I make a living with them and I really really wanted to buy an iPhone. The only thing that held me back was the fact that they were on AT&T. I held out hoping Apple would drop the exclusive but that never happened and i really wasn't that interested in a hacked iPhone. After being an extremely unsatisfied AT&T customer, there is no way in hell that i'd ever give that fu@ked up company another penny. I bought a Google G1 Phone through T-mobile instead and i'm extremely satisfied with it.
- chickenloco, on 04/15/2009, -2/+8Apple needs to think about the customer. Having two versions of the iPhone - one for Verizon and one for AT&T.
Competition will benefit the customer. - cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -0/+6It would have to be just as reconfigured for Sprint, since Verizon and Sprint are the big two CDMA carriers.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -1/+7I'm sure the other carriers would be MORE than happy to make a few changes.
- scully32, on 04/15/2009, -2/+8You got a lot of balls asking Apple to remain exclusive when you don't (at least from the looks of things) have a Mac on you desk.
- woofers07, on 04/15/2009, -1/+6Yes I'm an apple fan-boy. I've slobbered over the iPhone since it came out in 06. But I REFUSE to support AT&T. It makes way too much sense for Apple to ditch the exclusivity. I'm sure Verizon learned their lesson, and this would only help both companies. iPhone sales would spike considerably once they're available for Verizon and Sprint.
- bmdubya, on 04/15/2009, -2/+7NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I want the iPhone with Sprint! I want the Everything plan with the iPhone for a $100 a month. So much better than AT&T's crappy plans.
- cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5The changes are minor, and many of them are being rolled into the other networks for other devices as it is. (Like Visual Voicemail.) Even Verizon would be ecstatic to get some iPhonage now. They've lot a LOT of business to that device.
- Azriel7, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I hope they turn it down, it would be better for apple to sell the phones to multiple parties for them in the long run. Also, if other companies get the phone then that will force ATT to lower is contracts to something reasonable. A friend of mine told me her provider only charges $45 for phone with internet with unlimited sms. Att is such a ripoff.
- matt.rubin, on 04/15/2009, -4/+9 *****, AT&T. I want it on verizon!
- cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5Not really sure what Apple NEEDS from them anymore, though. Unless at&t is just going to toss cash at them for it. Lots and lots and LOTS of cash.
- jonthebishop, on 04/15/2009, -0/+5I see Apple dropping their exclusivity with AT&T soon, the other carriers should be willing to pay just as much at this point and you know Apple wants more market share.
- NSResponder, on 04/15/2009, -1/+6"I expect this to be a successful deal - although at&t will cede even more to Apple in the process."
I don't think AT&T has enough money to be able to buy an extension to the exclusivity. Apple knows their customers want the phone, and customer loyalty to AT&T is nil.
Once the current contract runs out, I expect Apple to start selling the phones unlocked, and to rapidly drop the pricing as the scale increases. They could easily sell 50 million units or more in the USA in the first year after the AT&T deal expires.
-jcr - Elranzer, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4One CDMA version and one GSM version would do just fine, thank you.
Pick your own carrier. - ryanjanssen, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5a cdma iPhone would be nice
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Exclusivity can benefit a product in beginning stages, but at this point, Apple has no reason to stay exclusive.
- cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Exclusivity was needed for the agreements they wanted. But now it's not so needed, as the other carriers will most certainly let Apple manage their device as they want so that they can reduce customer bleed to AT&T.
Unless AT&T dumps so much money and offers to make even MORE service changes to more than make up for the kind of revenue bumps they'd be expecting by moving to all carriers, I can't see Apple needing to bother anymore. - kwmoseng, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5Come on apple! WHY CANT WE JUST USE OUR iPHONE ON ANY GODDAMN NETWORK WE WANT?!
- 4NDr01D, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5stop supporting wireless carriers !! they are all freakin evil
there is no reason a 140character SMS cost 20c when a huge email with attachments are FREE!!!
support wifi and skype !! - tnoy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3The 'next' iPhone is going to sell just as well as the previous two. Verizon knows this and will bend over backwards to get Apple to sign with them. They didn't anticipate the iPhone doing as well as it did, and they didn't at the time see the benefits of lightening up on their control.
- ultimate_ed, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Except that we've seen nothing in either their latest phones/smartphone or data pricing that suggests they have any interest in Iphone customers. That, and their network that has gone to crap over the last few years are the reasons I'll be dropping Verizon when the next gen Iphone comes in a few months.
- Boofster, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Bastards!
- tnoy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3If you're a heavy user, Sprint's plan is a steal.
$100 for unlimited voice would be a massive savings for some people. - cthellis, on 04/15/2009, -1/+4Wouldn't "thinking of the consumer" mean they'd also have one with Sprint and one with T-Mobile, at the very least?
- MightyUpsetter, on 04/15/2009, -2/+5The G1 is terrible - like a retarded iphone.
- NSResponder, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3More likely that they'd add verizon (and sprint, and everyone else) instead of switching.
-jcr - chokeaduck, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3I concur.
- scarz99, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3How 'bout some Sprint love?
- moberry, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Your mom is still paying for the actual plan, all your paying for is the fee to add a line.
My fiance and I share a Verizon plan. Two blackberries, 1400 shared minutes. With a 20% monthly discount connected with my employer; we pay about $160. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3I don't know if you can really say its hurt them because the iPhone still sells like hotcakes, but I'm due for a new phone and I'd buy myself one tomorrow if I didn't have to lock myself into a mad expensive AT&T contract with it.
