"What is an Intel chip doing in a Mac? A whole lot more than it's ever done in a PC."
What exactly is the processor doing (besides running OSX, since now its just a DRM issue, and not about the chip architecture) that an Intel processor can't do for a PC? And why can't they sell the thing on its own merits? Does it always have to be an underhanded dig at the PC world?
The article says "your new Mac will do all those things that only Macs can do — and do so at an astonishing level of performance" and then fails to mention one thing that only a Mac can do. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL - just as I'm listeing to this weeks TWIT and Kevin is "praying" that they don't announcea new Powerbook because he just bought one.
- shamam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would never buy Rev A Apple hardware, and I'm an Apple fanboy.

"You guys gotta realize that this is the only dual core CPU laptop right now. The Pentium M processor is already efficient low-valtage processor and now there's two. These will run circles around the old PowerPCs. Don't you guys know better than to use GHz to determine performance anymore?"
Dead wrong and in accurate. Alienwares have been dual core for a few months now. - Anekdoten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll run the hacked version of OS X on my AMD X2 4800+ and benchmark it against their overpriced PC.
Final thoughts, great software and overpriced hardware. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. Bill Gates is crapping in his pants right now.
2. Time to hack the OSX over to the PC. - thehigherlife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"wow two processors AN NIETHER OF THEM IS 64 BIT. Whoopdee do."
And how well is Windows XP 64-bit doing? Did the Athlon 64 usher in the new era of 64-bit Nirvana? No. 64-bit is the next step, but it will be awhile before it is the standard.
Also, I believe you meant to say: "AND NEITHER." Three words: "check spelling button" by SQUIDwarrior
the current version of OS X is 64-bit the G5 is a 64-bit proc. Apple has had a 64-bit operating system out for some time now. - number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You guys gotta realize that this is the only dual core CPU laptop right now. - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In hindsight, it makes sense that they push out this laptop instead of a cheap alternative. Those on the fence would opt for the pricier notebook- if it were the other way around and Apple pushed out cheap iBooks (or just MacBooks or what have you), then the consumers on the fence might opt for those cheaper notebooks in order to get something quicker, and Apple loses out later when they debut the beefier machines. The only question now is when they'll push out the straight MacBooks. I eagerly anticipate that... I would have picked up a MacBook Pro but I just want something smaller than 15".
- Gundam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I still don't get why, even after switching to Intel, Apple can't come out with a 3GHz + machine... can someone explain this to me? How does this Duo Core 1.6GHz compare to a P4 3.8 GHz???"
It compares well because it is a Pentium M, the only half decent processor Intel makes right now. It has a short pipe like AMD instead of a high clock speed. - Raemi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, this is a *legitimate* question, so please be nice if it is a stupid one....
Last year, wasn't there another big Apple announcement a week or two after MacWorld? I'll admit it -- as a girl, I was much more interested in a cheaper laptop and a new/updated iPod device (although for as much as I know about computers, this new one sounds pretty good :)). Do you guys think there's any chance of another announcement, or has that already "been done" in Steve Jobs' mind? - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2time to hit ebay for all the ibooks and powerbooks that people are selling for the new ones
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I really was hoping for a sub-$1000 Intel iBook, something that would interest me in trying an Apple product out for the first time. But as usual, Apple isn't interested in attracting new customers, only enticing existing fanboys to upgrade."
No, they just don't want people from the Ghetto to be able to afford their products.......which makes sense...........sub $1,000 intel iBook, you're living in your imagination man.. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple has done very well in catering to the upper end of the market, they will continue with their intel products. The cheaper computers will be the mini & the ibooks.
They have always had expensive hardware, this is not going to change, quit griping and accept it.
They are not Dell & their not Microsoft, their something completely different and they have made a name in catering to a market that can afford to pay a little more for their products. - flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Apple has done very well in catering to the upper end of the market, they will continue with their intel products. While I mostly agree with this, its always been apples to oranges. Now Apple have the same hardware as PC's. I was really contemplating a Mac notebook for my next purchase cause I like the idea of dual booting OSX and Windows, but I will not pay that much of a premium for it.
Also, the specs for the $1999 Macbook Pro is more of what I expected out of a $1000-1500 ibook. The only high end specs on there is the video card, and it's not that high-end. Remember in the PC world dual core is not a big performance boost yet, like it is in the Mac world. - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no word on dual booting or any sort of windows api integration.... big white elephant they left hanging in the room.....
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to sound like an ass, but to all those people who are saying how they just bought Macs... did you not hear Jobs' announcement last June that they were moving to Intel? This isn't a shocking announcement. It was widely speculated that they would finish up earlier than expected.
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""Windows fanboys - with Windows Vista, we welcome you to OS X 10.4! Only uglier and a year later! YAY!"
Mactel? Welcome to 1978"
A machine for manipulating numbers? Welcome to Greece circa 300 BCE. - DeMarko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they went with Intel because AMD couldn't meet their production demands. Something like that
- mizzoucat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! They updated the iMac three times in less than a year! Sheesh!

If you knew anything about today's processors, you'd know that clock speed doesnt mean everything. They use intel's new yonah core, based off of dothan, which is highly efficient. Hell, it stacks up to AMD's X2 processors quite well. - pd69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whatever happend to the cheap laptop, and all that fuss about selling them so that people who buy ipods can move to apple computers that aint gonna happen now

"What a waste of $2500! how can they charge so much, why didn't they stick with doing ibooks with intel for $899!"
Think about it! If they make an Intel laptop on the lower end (such as $1500 and lower), then it will automatically make the previous iBooks and PowerBooks (such as Kevin's) totally outdated. But by making it high end (VERY powerful and $2500), it doesn't replace any as much as it would have if it replaced the lower-end products.
However, just a couple months ago, $3k was spent on my Dell XPS Gen 2, if only if only... - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't you guys realize that calling someone a fanboy simply indicates that you are a fanboy on the other side of the fence?
Seriously, what grade are you guys in? - HoGiHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Thank you for your order"

Can't wait! - pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS, http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ would be the site that many of you would be interested in
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, MacBook Pro is an addition to the Apple line, and not a PowerBook replacement?
- dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How the hell can they justify the 600£ difference in price between the UK version and the US one?
- chadseld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cost:
The cost is in line with similar PCs. The Core Duo chip is new and is Intel's highest-end mobile chip. You can configure a Gateway for a bit less, but not a lot less. The $1000 PC's have centrino or Pentium M, not Core Duo.
This is a HIGH-END laptop and it is priced accordingly. It is 1" thick and has ATI x1600 for crying out loud.
I expect the iBook and Mac Mini to use the lower-cost Core (single) version. The really cheap Apple laptop may yet come. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How does this Duo Core 1.6GHz compare to a P4 3.8 GHz???"
A single core Pentium M (Close to the Solo Core) at 2GHz, outperforms a P4 3.0GHz at pretty much everything.
So that should give you some idea. - TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shouldn't the use of Intel have allowed for lower prices?
- Embro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So will these intel machines run windoze?
Can the be made to dual boot? - joeuttaro, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Dual Processors? No. Dual Core.
- Legato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats with all this bitching? the macbook pro is the same cost as the 15 inch powerbook is now... with isight, a dual core processor, and supposedly a better screen...
- Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the whole "being able to run windows nativly" on the mactels. That'll get everyone to choose apple over Dell, and too, what happened to the Robson Technology rumor that was reported, that would even make these babys more attractive.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good stuff.
No new Mac Mini "Tivo Killer" though. That's what I wanted to see.... - Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd just like to be the first to point out that Kevin Rose completely nailed it.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ROFL, dual core processor in a notebook. Wow, we reaaaaallly pushing the technical boundaries here. A lot more than a PC, my @$$!
I'm really happy to see apple coming out with a new laptop. They've needed a new faster notebook since the aged powerbook class. However, bragging that it can do dual core while PCs can't is completely false. Dual core processors have been out for a long time for PCs. It's kinda like the old G5 advertisements that the G5 was the fastest personal computer in the world. That ad quickly disappeared for good reason.
funbags, fyi, dual cores does not mean 2 processors. You get 1 processor with 2 cores on it. Putting 2 processors on the laptop would use too much battery power.
I just hope the metal casing doesn't interfeare with wifi reception. Remember the titanium powerbook? - howdesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see some benchmarks before we get our panties in a bunch gents. They are saying these are 4 to 5 times faster than the previous model. If that holds up, the switch to intel will have paid off in spades.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1megamahi- I feel you. I picked up the iMac in October. But it's not all too bad- I don't have any speed issues really (I hardly have to wait for slow apps or anything), so since there's nothing really else major aside from speed bumps, I'm happy where I am. And I don't have to get the first revision of their software, which is decent.
- Doofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comes with a remote. Built-in iVideo. Drives huge monitors if necessary.
It's a "corporate presentation" laptop.
iBook and PowerBook Intel machines will come later. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Markdoggin:
"What a waste of $2500! how can they charge so much, why didn't they stick with doing ibooks with intel for $899!"
The equivalent (or those less powerful, at 2.26GHz Pentium M) Dell would cost nearly $1000 more, so shut it! - mkelley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The MacBook IS the Powerbook replacement....no more powerbooks
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This is the begining of the downward spiral."
This has been said at the conclusion of every MacWorld since 1990. Color me jaded, but I seriously doubt this is the beginning of the end.
Why is everyone so hung up on 64 Bit? Is is really necessary for the vast majority of computer tasks? 64-bit word processing? 64-bit spreadsheets? LOL
We are too obsessed with power. Years ago, speed increases were revolutionary because computing was still a nascent technology. Speed is still welcome, but it is not the determing factor for success. - KevInTx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dual core in a tiny 1' case, eh?... Well if it runs as hot as I suspect maybe they can change the name to MAtChBOOK.
I have to agree with the others here sort of ho hum MACWORLD... nothing to ground breaking. However, I'll more than likely pick up a copy of iLife 6. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, my powerbook that i bought in march will be up for sale.
It works perfectly but the macbook sounds like a superior product. I'll be going to ebay. - paulmetzger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's amazing how many diggers would do a better job of running Apple than Steve Jobs. Quick, someone alert the shareholders!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Macbook pro..is..awesome. But I won't be buying one. I think alot of people will though. It really looks beautiful, and if it is 4x faster...wow. I have the money to buy one, but can't justify it. I only need one that will do the essential things away from my desktop that would be cheap, I don't need a thin super computer on my lap it's just overkill. But for those who use their laptops as desktops, this is obviously an excellent machine for you. No intel mac mini's/ibooks though...*sigh*
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nope still £1,779.00 -> $3,139.046 They're taking the ***** piss now
