- judsond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No, apple very definately wants people to create widgets and standardize them for anyone. They are all very open, really just javascript and html with some nonstandard elements. look at http://developer.apple.com/macosx/dashboard.html for example. It's in apple's interests to have cross platform support, more people making widgets, and thus a more useful platform.
- Bigfat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Well, Apple will update dashboard so it will only run code that will only run on OSX."
Um, so long as code for Dashboard widgets remains free and available to the public, I don't see that as being a problem. All this is just a way to interpret CSS and Java. - pickupjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dashboard widgets are made in HTML, CSS and Javascript, morons !
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys DO realize that CoreFoundation, which makes up a large part of the fundamental Objective-C calls in Cocoa applications, is open source and cross-platform, right ( http://developer.apple.com/darwin/cflite.html )? So is WebKit. Not Safari, but WebKit is (and no I'm not talking about KHTML -- http://webkit.opendarwin.org/ ). So it's entirely possible -- although I freely admit that I can't vouch for this -- that you WILL be able to use some of those widgets that do Objective-C and WebKit calls.
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seeing as how Konfabulator will never come out on linux. I'm all for this. I never really could get into superkaramba and gdesklets.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish i could use widgets on my pc
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kde for the win, yet again
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love KDE...but widgets are bloody useless (i much prefer taskbar applets). still, seeing KDE implement technologies from other OSes makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!! ^_^
- Orangutan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love dashboard widgets! they are one of the best features about OS X
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^no, he made a joke.
- ubuntuist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm.... Once this comes out, I will give KUbuntu a try for sure!
- emblym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is great. There are some Apple specific widgets that rely on Apple applications that probably will not work, but other than that everything should work great.
- mccoma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, if I create a widget and stick to javascript, I should be fine. If I use the objective-c bindings to do something interesting, then I have some problems.
Cool. Perhaps someone will add some extensions to the javascript engine so we can stay in a compatible mode without dropping to native. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple's obviously fine with this, they just gave the developer of KDE access to CVS for webkit.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With Safari based upon Konqueror's KHTML renderer, this seems like a natural thing to do once they roll Apple's changes back into their own browser.

I've seen here Opera might include widgets in its next version (Opera 9):
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,123615,pg,4,00.asp
"Although we were unable to test these features, the company says the final version will include support for widgets, small external programs that use Opera's engine and can run on the desktop. Existing widgets for other programs can display the weather, show Webcams, and much more. Users will also be able to choose which Web sites can run JavaScript or display images."
Since Opera runs on almost every OS, it would basically bring its own set of widgets to each one. They would therefore be OS independent. - shingalated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the idea (more widgets) I guess this will take the place of superkaramba though :(
- KriTenKs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0KDE4 will be out in 3 weeks?
- ZSX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^ Try Konfabulator (now known as Yahoo Widgets).
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"With Safari based upon Konqueror's KHTML renderer, this seems like a natural thing to do once they roll Apple's changes back into their own browser"
i was pretty sure with safari 2.0 they dropped khtml and went to a different renderer - TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The question is, will they be usable from outside of KDE(e.g. from fluxbox or FVWM)?
- solarcanine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TWiTarmy: You're incorrect - it's still the same codebase, but with Apple's modifications not yet making it back into the webkit repository yet.
- Z_Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAAY! Back to KDE again! (soon at least, when KDE4 comes out)
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Konfabulator sucks ass. Having them all over your screen all of the time sucks.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You all act like people will not make widgets that are multiplatform. It's going to take a while, but this is just another step in the direction of uniform software. Besides, I just want the Hula girl on my KDE box. http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/view.php?widget=36981
- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are these so-called "widgets" not lame? I don't see why anyone would care about this after spending 10 minutes with them.
- SpringBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SymphonyOS has been building in OSX Widget support to their Mezzo desktop for a while now.
http://www.symphonyos.com/
The Apple Widgets are a good format to support at they're almost completely based on web standards. Other usually have specific XML formats or non-standard use of Javascript and the like. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally I think this is great.. its taking a service that works and bolting it in... as for the bit about it only works on OS X? well as 'pickupjojo' says it uses HTML CSS and Javascript.. so bring it on I say.
But hey if it doesn't work, then just don't use it. there is still "SuperKaramba" and "Gdesklets" although they were a pain to get working and didn't yield the same results.
I hope KDE really comes out strong with Version 4, I really do - uberwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm more impressed by his talk about the background layers. not useful maybe, but a "wow factor" that I could get excited about.
- Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like KDE more and more everyday. Yay for bringing over something apple did well on.
- abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The vast majority of widgets will work on KDE, sure iTunes widgets will need to be ported to whatever music app you use, and screen capture widgets will need to have a second script for doing the actual capture, the delicious library widget won't work because DL is a mac-only application.
But apart from that? Every widget will work, weather, rss, php manual, currency converter, clock, wikipedia, unit converter... it'll all work. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like this idea .. I do wish though.. that a standard could immerge and we could use all widgets on all computers. Konfabulator is still the closest to that but now with dashboard widgets going to linux.. maybe somebody will pick it up for windows?
- otomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Any widget that calls external programs/uses objective c will definitely not work. If the widget is just plain html/css this will work. But if you get into webkit etc... kde will be lacking.
That is the hard facts. You can't just implement the canvas tag and call it good.
Look here for the details: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/AppleApplications/Conceptual/Dashboard_ProgTopics/index.html - nunofgs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OMG that's just for the hype... the fact is that if a widget calls an external program or an applescript it will NOT work...
- modularsky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0doubtful. the interesting thing will be to see what apple's reaction to this will be. Hail the spread of the dashboard widget, or react in an opposite manner?
- btdown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2YAY! Just what we need...more useless bloat in KDE.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Once again, the OSS community rides the coattails of commercial endeavors."
And what exactly is OS X based on? Oh right OSS. Stupid Troll. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't like it one bit.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Well, Apple will update dashboard so it will only run code that will only run on OSX.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0bonchbonch:
And poorly at that! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Once again, the OSS community rides the coattails of commercial endeavors.
- ihate2regist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0keep the OSX crap where it belongs, on p.o.s. macs.
