- Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -15/+65I wish I could report you as lame.
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+44Whilst not a suprise the stupid thing is that you would think Mircosoft would have learned by now. For all we know Apple drops loads of features but we don't hear about them (other than idle speculation) then any additions look good (how good is open for debate). Microsoft just look stupid by announcing this new competing product that's going to be great then almost instantly take off features.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -14/+36Hold on a sec. Do we have some conformation on this? All I see is a single story from...
mac simum news
Until you can get someone with a reputation that's worth more than a free blog account to back this up, then this is suspect at best. - Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -20/+38of course it's Vista all over. MS cannot finish a single product, except when they buy another company that already has finished products for sale.
- addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22@Rigbymatt - I hope you are aware that hotmail was not developed by Microsoft? They bought it from someone after it had already developed a large user base.
- cj171, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22despite it being reported on a mac-centric site, if you read the article you'll notice it was lifted from Bloomberg...
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19The difference, of course, is company culture.
The folks at Apple don't know who knows what. They know what they need to know on a need to know basis. Their job security and their pride prevents them from leaking things to the press.
Conversely the folks at Microsoft have been suffering an increasing degree of apathy towards launch dates, feature bloat, and ham-handed beauracracy. The culture doesn't promote success as a whole - there is no big picture for the masses of Redmond.
Don't be fooled - Zune "leaks" aren't leaks at all - they're Microsoft's attempt to leverage generated hype to drive interest in this product. Efforts like this have worked for the 360 but this just feels like they're trying too hard. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17> tuxuser wrote: "Acipsus nonulla interdum alisi elesto dolortis natoque euisi nullandrem."
I agree 100%. But don't forget that the Microsoft business model may preclude such possibilities.
> tuxuser also wrote: "Doloborper tismolortis se tatisit dionull doluptatue onse, onse ilit ulla, landrem quatie incing odolobor."
I think you're forgetting about their foray into stand-alone devices in the early 1990s.
> tuxuser then wrote: "Commy nostie ad utate irilla nullam irilit."
Well put! I couldn't have said it better myself. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Oh so that would explain why there are so many Apple Rumor sites, and more importantly no microsoft rumor sites.
Microsoft has NO rumors because everything gets announced.
Apple has rumors because nothing is announced, but features just randomly appear. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@flag564
Here you go:
http://www.bloomberg.com/avp/avp.htm?T=default&clipSRC=mms://media2.bloomberg.com/cache/vaFrm69Re3Is.asf# - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Bllomberg TV is a Mac site!?
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I don't think keeping mum about Vista would do Microsoft any favors. It works for Apple, yes, but if Microsoft kept quiet for, what, the last 6 years, I think we'd all expect the next version of Windows to be HAL 9000. Most people wouldn't be thrilled with Vista right now, even if they didn't know it's original feature set.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18And let's see what was dropped. First, obviously, WinFS. Then PC to PC sync, support for RAW images, the Monad shell, RSA SecureID support, everything supposed to be in .NET and managed C# code. I'm sure there's more.
That said, estvir is actually quite objective about most things so I wouldn't say he's lame. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -20/+30(via http://www.macsimumnews.com/in…)
A story bashing microsoft on that site? NO WAY!!! - nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Here's the link to the real story rather than this lame-ass blog with bad grammar and spelling. (Warning, proprietary video content)

Because it can't do the "Dear Aunt" recognition thing. - mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11When they say iPod killer, they now mean the iPods released in 2001
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9because for some reason there isnt a Microsoft "Topic" section.
- elementalwinds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The Zune story was originally leaked I believe by Joystiq. Microsoft just admitted that an Ipod like device was coming out. Microsoft is stated as saying that multiple devices under the Zune moniker will be coming out similar to the apple strategy (Think Ipod Shuffle, Nano, Video, etc). The details of Zune have not even been released yet. Final hardware revisions have not been made yet. Comparing a non-disclosed Device yet to be fully revealed to delayed OS that has had multiple press releases is just let me put it in the illustrious words of Carlos Mencia "Duur DUUR DUURRRRR"
- Doofy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Link requires Windows Media Player 10 (which Microsoft dropped for the Mac)
Oh the irony! - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I watch TV eps and music vids on my iPod. :-)
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Why don't they take a leaf out of Apple's book, and leak nothing until the product is ready to ship?"
there IS a very clear reason for this.
(it was explained in some other article awhile back, don't ask me to find it). microsoft more or less HAS to release its development plans to the public in advance because it relies on a network of external brands and companies to co-produce and promote its products, whereas apple, at least from a consumer standpoint, is much more vertical. granted, this might not be as much of the case for Zune, but in general, with windows and many other microsoft products, this is the case - Aklblue, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I can't wait for this thing to finally come on the market, so Microsoft can send 1 unit to each store and then declare a "sell out" on the first day !!
You gotta love the MS marketing machine, they're the only ones producing anything. - Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, digg doesn't have a "Microsoft" category. ;-)
(Why not, I don't know. There are many more Microsoft users than Apple or Linux users, yet Apple and Linux have their own categories.) - solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Speaking of buying ideas, Google and Microsoft aren't actually all that different. Keyhole became Google Earth after purchase. I really don't think that's bad, small companies benefit from selling ideas and we get better access. Obviously, Microsoft has its other problems..but Hotmail really isn't one of them
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Delaying video capabilities?! I declare the Zune dead... at least to me.
- steveng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I do use the music a lot on my iPod, but I use the video for Watching Podcasts, DL.TV, Cranky Geeks, and Diggnation are way better in video form than just audio, and I don't like to be tied to my computer.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Ah, but instead of proclaiming the coming of Vista they could have been showing off their nice, new, free software. That would keep everyone happy. ...and more people would use PhotoStory, which is always a plus.
- thenonhacker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@flag564 has a point.
You see, Macsimum News is reporting "Bloomberg TV says that the New York Post is now reporting that Microsoft is delaying the video portion of its Zune device". - jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13I don't know why people are digging him down for this. It's the truth. Every major release from MS lately has been delayed and/or dropped features.
- kaytrio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is this under the Apple category? I mean... it's a story about a Microsoft product, right? Just because Apple makes a similar product, doesn't mean it should go in the Apple category.
- PepeGSay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yep. He actually says (paraphrased) that the product will have multiple forms. The first release may or may not have video. Woop t do.
- ralovely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can't help but think of Origami.
Does anyone remember ?
It was The Buzz a few month ago...
Supposed to be the item everyone need for the rest of his life,
iPod Killer, PDA Killer, and so on.
Does anyone remember ?...
Frustrating to see such a waste of means and money.
They could do great things. (PhotoSynth IS cool!) - elementalwinds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3| http://www.zuneinsider.com/ | Read the post called "Snapped Some Pics" if you look at the second image and zoom in you see multi-devices of different shapes blocked out in red.
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope it's just a rumor too. Seems kinda shabby that it wouldn't offer video when so many portable devices do. Granted I find the video feature on my iPod utterly useless. I never use it.
The wifi I could certainly see being cut, but video is like the bread and butter of mobile devices now. - WhiteSox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12god MS can't get ANYTHING right these days...
Really they should just not announce things until the shelves at best buy are already stocked with them - smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't understand their strategy. They have already said that it could will take several years and hundreds of millions of dollars to catch up the iPod. Why? Why try to fight an existing dominated market instead of innovating? They are constantly doing this, going after Google, Yahoo and Apple. They have done this in the past and failed. Several years back they tried to push Publisher as pro tool. They have been working on their web development tools and such to no real avail. They are doing a ton of mediocre or lame stuff and not making decent strides with their flagship, Windows.
I don't care about anything MS has say or offer at this point except the next version of Windows. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Zune story was originally leaked I believe by Joystiq.
You really believe it's a leak? Who's the brainwashed sheep here? (Seriously, I just think you are misinformed.)
These so called "leaks" were obviously planted by Microsoft itself, and Joystiq were simply the most gullible news outlet.
Funny enough, the day they officially "admitted" having an iPod competitor in the works, they already had the name and the viral-marketing website that goes with it. This is a proof that these leaks were planned.
Microsoft is the one hyping the thing through viral marketing and word of mouth. The fact that they released confusing and vague information doesn't excuse the fact that they say one thing one day, and something else the other day. - Baloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep I watch video on mine
diggnation, dt.tv and a whole bunch of other video podcasts.
also shows downloaded from iTMS....
the video feature is awesome.. but officially its not even the Video iPod...
it's the iPod with video capabilities..
surely the only way to successfully launch the Zune is to have a variety of models available, some with video some without. If you launch the product sans video then you have already dropped the ball. - PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Zune has the same chance as a racehorse that drops dead in the starting gate.
Apple has recently inked deals that will put iPod interfaces in 70% of the 2007 model year cars sold in the U.S. The most succinct comment I've seen on the iPod's dominance was in the ZDNet Talkback for their article (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584-6101744.html) on the subject:
"Apple's dominance leads to aftermarket products like this which further reinforces Apple's dominance. Windows fans out there, now you know how it feels to be on the other side."
~Philly - jole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Gee I saw this coming. My oppinion always was "The Microsoft Zune will do well and is a welcome competition to the iPod -- just as long as MS doesn't pull a Windows Vista on it."
Of course, they go ahead and do it. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought they were talking up a November release - and they still are not sure about something as basic as video support?
That was the other kind of new bit of information, that the Zume willbe out "in the next twelve months", which is not Novemeber.
Basically the product just reeks of something with no real focus behind it other than to "Get Apple". After all, the blind thrusting in the air approach has worked so well fighting Google... - boywhoatesouls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Incidentally, it's Mac. Not MAC. That's an abbreviation for something else...
"In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most forms of networking equipment." [Wikipedia] - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4RTFA. They are shedding support for Video. The original story is on bloomberg.
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Retard: Again - it was reported on bloomberg.
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is the origami project all over again. The things Microsoft is announcing lately (especially if their release is far in the future) aren't real products but attempts to hype its stock.
- SpacedCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@escamillo
Well, since you don't get it, here's the explanation: The author was making a segue from the music-player business to the operating-system business. The idea is that MS is the dominant OS (and Apple probably isn't happy with the consequences of that); in contrast, the Ipod is the dominant portable music/video player (and MS probably isn't happy with the consequences of that).
Since these consequences will affect what either company can do, it will also affect their consumer base, but in this case it's the MS consumers feeling the pinch, not the Apple ones.
Does that make it clearer ? - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A true "Windows fan" would presumably wish to see Windows Mobile running on all portable devices - incuding music players. Yet Windows Mobile can make little headway against the iPod as a media device of choice, now for autos as well.
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Zune could be Microsoft's waterloo (as Chris Perillo remarked the other day).
Music players is a market they know nothing about, they have no track record there. Windows media player interface really sucks.
They're pulling resources away from their core product, while it crumbles in front of everybody's eyes. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Would someone please ban this idiot for spamming every story with this stupid comment?
