macobserver.com — Apple's patent calls it a "Computing device with dynamic ornamental appearance"

- digg it
- turtleman8089, on 07/27/2008, -2/+59it sounds like this would decrease battery life and and increase the price.
but maybe apple can pull it off.- wontstoptalking, on 07/27/2008, -0/+17They already did.
- Daniel591992, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6It's called the "2.0 Firmware Upgrade"
- 5urr3al5am, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Anyone else think the 'guys' in the ad for Digg Meetups look like a bunch of dweebs?
- dood, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7Color e-ink could be pretty awesome for this sort of application.
- fmorel90, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7Apple can pull off anything thanks to it fanbase.
- supermanred, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1Microsoft is better at it though, selling broken operating systems since the 90s.
- 5urr3al5am, on 07/28/2008, -6/+4I bet that would make the music sound soooo much better. Interesting trend Apple has been taking lately? more sparkle less substance, for instance, the whole dumb MacBook Air? Who cares how light a laptop is, if it's a light-weight piece of crap?
- skidooer, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5What's wrong with the Macbook Air?
Overpriced and underperforming are the only bad things I've heard about it. And those really aren't bad at all. Overpriced and underperforming attributes are worth the trade off if you honestly need a lightweight laptop. - KingFog, on 07/28/2008, -4/+2skidooer, are you kidding me?
You can get Lenovo's that perform better, and are cheaper, and weigh about as much as the MBA.
- skidooer, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5What's wrong with the Macbook Air?
- omgsoemo, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Will they pull it off critically? No. But with they have a large enough portion of the tech industry aggregating their RSS feeds into a custom Bible that they can pull it off industry-wise
- theOster, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1i'm waiting for the i(whatever) to come with that squishy swirly stuff that was big in 80s stickers. only to find out it's steves jizz. and watch sales skyrocket.
- tacojohn48, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1They could coat it in the stuff that mood rings are made out of.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/27/2008, -0/+17They already did.
- kr9681, on 07/27/2008, -6/+85does it play music?
- Karmavs, on 07/27/2008, -9/+60does it run Crysis?
- wontstoptalking, on 07/27/2008, -2/+24I wonder if the brain of a hamster can run Crysis....
Dude, I think I just won the science fair. - RobotLeAwesome, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1or the Nobel...
- erichw1504, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5does it come with a portal gun?
- wontstoptalking, on 07/27/2008, -2/+24I wonder if the brain of a hamster can run Crysis....
- Breakerboy, on 07/28/2008, -5/+1who cares it chages color
- manacit2, on 07/28/2008, -19/+11***** you, two of my friends died playing music
- MacParrot, on 07/28/2008, -3/+10No, ***** you. Two of my friends died using this meme.
Can we PLEASE stop using this now?
- MacParrot, on 07/28/2008, -3/+10No, ***** you. Two of my friends died using this meme.
- digitallysick, on 07/28/2008, -5/+6Oh yeah it will play music, but not over stereo blue tooth, or any other modern standard you can think of
- se1zure, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2Who seriously uses bluetooth headphones? They sound like ***** in comparison to even a cheap pair of corded phones.
- daza, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Why would Bluetooth headphones sound like *****? Bluetooth is a digital medium where as your corded headphones are all analogue. Not that it should even make a difference but Bluetooth sounds just as good as corded 'phones to me. You can get canal-phone Bluetooth sets these days too.
- insanebrain, on 07/28/2008, -0/+23Why should it play music ? It can change color.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6Does it have the ability to have more pixels?
- robfrye, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3will it blend?
- Karmavs, on 07/27/2008, -9/+60does it run Crysis?
- ehcropydoc, on 07/27/2008, -9/+28use a sharpie, works better
- americaskate, on 07/27/2008, -22/+7iChameleopod.
- Jacksonblue, on 07/28/2008, -2/+1I lol'ed
- Richie311, on 07/28/2008, -2/+2Nice try. But im gonna give it a -1.
- Karmavs, on 07/27/2008, -2/+10Sounds more likely than what everyone assumed was meant by the more vague "multiple colours on each iPod" rumour.
But; the article implies computers, not iPods; will be seeing this. The MacBooks already light up at the back, so…- erichw1504, on 07/28/2008, -10/+3Why so serious?
- tedrock, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7"The most interesting thing we noted, however, is that most people tend to think this patent idea is for use on iMac cases, or other CPUs. We think it much more likely that a device with the ability to change colors would be much more likely to be an iPod or similar handheld device."
I read the whole thing. How about you?
- wontstoptalking, on 07/27/2008, -4/+16I kept sending Steve email after email, and finaly my prayers are answered!
A COLOR CHANGING IPOD!!!- supermanred, on 07/28/2008, -1/+8I keep bugging him for one that will allow me to time travel 7 days into the past.
- xtraa, on 07/28/2008, -6/+3Hmm, at least going back 7 days in time with a flux capacitor is way more easy than trying to make Windows syncing with time.microsoft.com.
- stellarceltic, on 07/28/2008, -3/+14NINTENDO SIXTYFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Whitey07, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7Real people say 'colour'.
- Zaeboes, on 07/28/2008, -2/+0I am not a real people?
- supermanred, on 07/28/2008, -1/+8I keep bugging him for one that will allow me to time travel 7 days into the past.
- acevoncash, on 07/28/2008, -0/+34This patent gets dug up every 2-3 years. I remember when MacFormat did a whole issue on it. Apple files hundreds and hundreds of patents every year, and this one is old at that. Nothing to see here.. move along.
- Mootabolife, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6I'm still waiting on that Sony brain wave beam patent to come to fruitation.
- daza, on 07/30/2008, -0/+2Be careful, they might rootkit you.
- starbuxadct, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1You're calling something that was filed last Thursday "old"...?
I wouldn't want to know how you gauge an entire year.- acevoncash, on 07/29/2008, -1/+2This article was written on December 30th 2002. Good try though.
- edalytical, on 07/29/2008, -2/+0Isn't this the glowing Apple on the back of their notebooks? Seems reasonable to me that they would have broadened the paten to include things like changing color. Not only is it an old article it's an old patent for something Apple started shipping in 2001: namely the PowerBook G4. I can't believe this is on Digg.
- starbuxadct, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1I'm talking about the actual patent genius.
The date at the top of it is July 24, 2008, and the text from the actual patent says: "Filed: October 31, 2007"- acevoncash, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1I see that the patent itself is dated as such. Now I am supremely confused as to how an article dated 2002 was written about a patent filed in 2007?
..hold up
maybe its because the patent linked is held by "Catalyst Law Group, APC" and whatever it is was invented by a guy from kentucky and was researched with government funding? I don't think this has anything to do with apple. However, I don't know.. the patent is half legaleze half science-talk neither of which I know much about. What I do know is people have been talking about a chameleon mac patent for years now and I am confident it is vaporware.
- acevoncash, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1I see that the patent itself is dated as such. Now I am supremely confused as to how an article dated 2002 was written about a patent filed in 2007?
- Mootabolife, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6I'm still waiting on that Sony brain wave beam patent to come to fruitation.
- Upon66, on 07/28/2008, -13/+4Are people really that ***** picky? Another reason to claim Apple with "queer fashion products" rather than useful products...
- supermanred, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1Yeah, because it's queer to Windows users that someone could own a computer for 10 years, and it works faster now than the day they bought it and has never had the operating system installed... and never had antivirus or spyware problems...
queer. Look it up in the dictionary.
- supermanred, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1Yeah, because it's queer to Windows users that someone could own a computer for 10 years, and it works faster now than the day they bought it and has never had the operating system installed... and never had antivirus or spyware problems...
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/28/2008, -2/+9clearly a logical progression in usability
- iBeej, on 07/28/2008, -1/+13If Apple filed a patent for a "computing device capable of interstellar space travel" you can be assured DIGG would have a front page article with photoshop mock-ups of iPOD spaceships.
- MacParrot, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5What are you doing Dave?
- diggmaddy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6Open the iPod bay doors, HAL
- simmin, on 07/29/2008, -0/+0I'm sorry Steve, I'm afraid I can't do that.
- kibbledbits, on 07/28/2008, -6/+5It's little things like this which keep Apple on the forefront of technology. They are making stylistic and simplistic useful little devices that people use everyday.
- freezerburn666, on 07/28/2008, -9/+4typical apple *****, whats the ***** use of this feature? it's still crap.
- neuen, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1so were making it smaller and change colors... so losing it will take half the time!!
- notzak, on 07/28/2008, -0/+14Blue -is- the new Red.
- chrisinsocalif, on 07/28/2008, -4/+6Another gimmick to get all the apple lemmings to eat from their marketing machine.
- smoger, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2om nom nom
- NicksVideo, on 07/28/2008, -2/+42Its*
- serif69, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.
- borez, on 07/28/2008, -4/+3And the point would be?
- freezerburn666, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6to walk into the cafeteria with your new blonde highlights and french manicure nails, showing off your pink to baby blue colour changing ipod to all the other sluts at your table
- zzz@tkz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4My sluts would be so jealous.
- borez, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3For those digging me down, what you gonna do, have a private idisco?
- freezerburn666, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6to walk into the cafeteria with your new blonde highlights and french manicure nails, showing off your pink to baby blue colour changing ipod to all the other sluts at your table
- kailash079, on 07/28/2008, -5/+1iPod Rainbow!! since we all know that better colours mean better quality music!! apple you're a genius!!
- kencurran, on 07/28/2008, -3/+1Eating battery power and causing a distraction wouldn't be too fun. Less useless addons please! And it's not "*it's* color" so boo @ the title
- erichw1504, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4still waiting for my iPortalGun, Steve
- MattB123, on 07/28/2008, -2/+3This will be fantastic!
And by fantastic I mean a new way to make functional existing units "obsolete" and charge more for for features nobody needs! Stockholders rejoice! - MatthewGranda, on 07/28/2008, -16/+18***** you! Two of my friends died trying to change color!
- stellarceltic, on 07/28/2008, -5/+6Give it a rest.
- atbnet, on 07/28/2008, -6/+6Keep it going, I digg up every comment like this.
- tnoy, on 07/28/2008, -4/+35"Want a new color for your iPod? Its simple, just upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, and you can make it any* color you want for just $0.99 per color.
*Four colors to chose from"- tenspeedogbb, on 07/28/2008, -0/+16**Requires $9.95 software upgrade from iTunes Store
- lougoose, on 07/28/2008, -2/+3Not a bad deal if you ask me.
- bassman12593, on 07/28/2008, -12/+9but will it blend?
- tedrock, on 07/28/2008, -0/+13the 80's called. they want their hypercolor back.
- zzz@tkz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7Hypercolour is the *****
- tedrock, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6amen brother... only way i could get girls to touch me back in highschool... and even today :(
- zzz@tkz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7I can't get girls to touch me, so I touch myself :(.
- tedrock, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3...awkward
- pond70, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1HAHAHAHAH.... shhhhh dont you know Apple is cutting edge on design.
- slapded, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1hypercolor + washingmachine = fail
- tedrock, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1the washing machine was fine. it was the dryer that owned the shirts.
- zzz@tkz, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7Hypercolour is the *****
- brentfloyd, on 07/28/2008, -2/+4Its just a cool feature, i wouldn't mind having it, as long as the battery last just as long as the old ipod or longer and can hold just as much music i would be happy with it
- s0l0s0ul, on 07/28/2008, -1/+27This is much more useful than copy and paste.
- JeffMaster, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1haha, yeah, I know right? "Copy and Paste is just not high enough on our list..." pffffh, it's the biggest joke of the entire iphone!
- tommyny04, on 07/28/2008, -9/+0ther only thing i can say about this is
FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!! - corneliousjd, on 07/28/2008, -3/+2you can already buy a case for your ipod. everybody buys cases anyhow. so it would cover up whatever color-changing you decide on anyhow.
- tedrock, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2my case is transparent... problem solved.
- schneid4323, on 07/28/2008, -9/+2Pics or ban
- mediaspree, on 07/28/2008, -3/+6I have this in my car. I can change the colors of all the guages. I've never used it!
- zzz@tkz, on 07/28/2008, -2/+2Those, sir, are called lights :(.
- beatoven, on 07/28/2008, -3/+0At last. I've been waiting to see that for ages...
- imdragon, on 07/28/2008, -1/+10Now if it changed colors depending on the music you were listening to...
- justdru, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4If they make this change color to the beat of the music they can sell them next to those retarded flashing cups at the county fairs...
- Ninjabeats, on 07/28/2008, -5/+13"New from Apple.
The Apple invisiPod. Don't worry, it's there. We promise, loyal customers. You can't see, hear, touch, taste, or smell it. But we swear it has the Apple logo on it. And that's all that matters." - T8erT0T, on 07/28/2008, -5/+2The cases will have the intuitive ability to change color depending on the genre of music being played. "None-more-black" Black will show when the user is playing metal. A Black-and-White Checkerboard design will appear when the user is playing artists like The Specials and The Skatalites. And the color Gay will prominently be displayed whenever the user is playing anything considered to be Emo.
- venuspcs, on 07/28/2008, -2/+2Just what we need a bunch of electronic devices that can change colors.....in less than a week on the market some hacker will figure out how to make them show images and release a trojan that randomly turns your iPhone case into a naked woman.
- InfernoX, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2is that such a bad thing?
- skidooer, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Trojan? This isn't a Zune we're talking about. Apple products don't get trojans.
- insanebrain, on 07/28/2008, -4/+3Whow .. a iPod with a screensaver on it.
- menwuur, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6will be dope if they can flash colors throughout the body in beat of the music your listening to
- cgruber, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2portable seizures, nice.
- pond70, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1hmmmmm just like Dell did 3 years ago
- Istrancis, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Maybe it'd be more than decorative, maybe it'd change colour depending on different circumstances, like if the battery is running low, or if you're running low on storage space or something.
- pond70, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2or you are heading to a rave and forgot your glow sticks
- travisg100, on 07/28/2008, -1/+0If they would put this in new iMacs I would be greatly pleased :]
- MoistVonLipwig, on 07/28/2008, -3/+3Stop the subtle aproaches and just make them cylindrical and vibrating to delight the iFags already
- Gneisbaard, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Ah yes, and people will go to the online iColor shop, and pay for it.
Excellent.
Patent it. - Kingoftherings, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Why does everyone think Apple makes such good products? Seems here they're focusing (yet again) on looks and not on what the device can actually do that's useful.
- skidooer, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1You're missing the economic point of view here. If Apple can have one run of iPods that can be any colour, the cost of production may be potentially lower than several runs for all the various colours they have to offer. No more warehouses of pink iPods that nobody wants to buy.
The ability for the end-user to change the colour is just a nice side effect.

- colosis, on 07/28/2008, -4/+2BUT CAN IT RUN CRYSIS??
- Mystlyfe, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0I actually think this has some potential to be really cool if done right. If they make the whole body a visualizer effect (move with/to the music), or display ambient lighting for your videos, etc.
This idea has a lot of potential, but I don't think that it will be flushed out to that extent and still be affordable. - flangepiece, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10Oh man, my pocket is going to ***** love this.
- kraftj, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Remember those "Hypercolor" t-shirts? I think an iPod/iPhone that did the same would be sweet...
- dontswimtoshore, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1"you know how I know you're gay..."
