- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -10/+52I'm curious, what plethora of 3rd party apps are you guys all drooling for? Its a phone that is also a widescreen iPod that plays music and video, and browses the web over wifi. And knowing Apple, it probably does those specific functions pretty well. Do you really think it needs a killer 3rd party app to be successful? How many 3rd party apps have "made" or "broken" other smart phones? How many Blackberry users have 3rd party apps running? Is there one 3rd party app on a Treo or Blackberry that you can point to (like Photoshop on the Mac, or Office on the PC, or Gears of War on the Xbox360 :p ) that has "made" the platform successful?

Try to jack my iPhone and you'll be in the emergency room with a $600 iBill. - jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29Flash videos really really suck, anyway.
- Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20It can't be flash.
Flash would load up the CPU and drain the battery. The whole point of switching to H 264 is to allow people not only to play Youtube videos, but to keep playing them for longer than an hour or so.
There's nothing to complain about here. All of Youtube will be H 264 by the fall, so you won't miss anything unless you are a super early adopter. - tsunamisteve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I'm blown away. I've never "just browsed" YouTube and I spent a couple hours doing it on my Apple TV. The quality is great (way better than flash), the interface is extremely quick and intuitive, and widescreen videos fill up my entire widescreen tv. It's awesome. This will be nice on the iPhone as well.
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Something tells me he's talking about AppleTV... *sigh,* better warn my friend.
- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Because Flash support would require heavy cpu usage, which would lead to shorter battery life. The iPhone has hardware capable of playing h.264, thus less strain on the cpu.
- kevinmotel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12updated your what, exactly?
- fxspec06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Apple should now update Front Row for OS X to include this. I'd love to see it ... =D
- gordonf238, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Re: http://m.youtube.com
Great! I can watch youtube videos over my Windows Mobile 6-powered pocket PC! I especially loved the part when my Windows Mobile 6-powered pocket PC launched the Windows Media Player when visiting the aforementioned link and clicking on a video, only to display "Unknown error 0x0000e".
Gotta love Microsoft, where things just.. don't work. - plucas, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Yeah, this is the "missing" icon for sure. Check out the new YouTube icon: http://www.apple.com/iphone/internet/?feature=feature05
- Greyarea, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15That speaks volumes about your sex life.
- lgc90, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12What the hell did you expect?
- Emery, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Anyone notice how apple seems to update the layout and design of the iphone page like every other day? I can just picture Jobs standing over the designers shoulder barking orders. Im not sure I've ever seen an apple product page change so frequently, its literally gone through several iterations.
oh yeah, and hooray for youtube on iphone. - TaterSalad77, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14Hmm. Can't wait for streaming video over the EDGE network. That'll be a blast.
- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Why don't you watch it over your 802.11 then?
- sunroom, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Sold!
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6according to Apple's press release, yes, the full catalog, by this fall.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/20youtube.html - gorkish, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I don't see you blaming the Facebook apps not working problem on Facebook; yeah sure lots of trash can cause system instability which is very important on a smartphone, but if you are already running an OS with a full security model including good stuff like per-process resource quotas, file protection, etc. you have already solved most of these problems. If you look at PalmOS and Windows Mobile (which are the root of these claims if you think about it), by virtue of the way they were initially designed, neither of these has any of this to speak of.
The bottom line is that there are a lot better ways to sandbox an application and protect your resources without trying to feed developers this "***** sandwich" (with attribution to John Gruber) of web app nonsense. Not ready? Fine. Not really OS X on the iPhone (Pretty sure this is true anyway, but) Fine. Can't let you because of contract between Apple and AT&T (Probably the actual reason), ***** but Whatever. Why Apple won't come out and say what they mean is anyone's guess, but the fact of the matter is that they have a killer platform that you can't really do anything cool with.
Let's say for instance you want to do an app similar to the Youtube one. With the current state of affairs here are some very basic functionality things that you (confirmed) cannot do:
1) Put your icon in an easily accessible place - Users must access a safari bookmark.
2) Hide safari's interface (address bar/status bar)
3) Stream video. You have to fully download, then the player launches full screen only. Users have to navigate back to Safari when finished.
You also won't see these apps or anything similar to them:
VNC/RDP/ARD or other graphical remote access clients. You can maybe fudge SSH over HTTPS/AJAX but it will run like a dog.
SIP / Skype / any VoIP or video chat
IM (Yes you can interface to an IM service with a web app, but no ability to notify you of a new IM really sorta kills it)
Background scheduling apps: Alarm clock, etc.
Applications that require the iPhone to communicate with other hardware ie a Bluetooth GPS, WiFi projector (mobile presentations) etc. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10No MOVIE EDITORS on my phone?
And that's a problem?
Yes there will not be some class of applications for the phone. But there will at least be games by third parties, there will be a lot of useful web based utilities, and eventually we'll have a real SDK that lets you do those other things too. Just not right away, but I can wait a long, long time before I miss being able to edit movies on a phone. - crazzyeddie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6h.264 is superior, period. Especially with a dedicated hardware decoder.
- zeeky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7there is more to this "sweet" (read: *****) solution than meets the eye. it means there will never be any emulators, games, movie editing software, non-AOL instant messengers, last.fm radio listeners, spreadsheets and office apps, telnet clients, terminal access, remote desktop clients. NOTHING like that. its an amazing phone including a 3d graphics processor thats just itching to play some games but no, they have to lock it all in. we already knew the iPhone could support web 2.0 technologies before he told us. web apps like iPhoneChat would have been created regardless of apple's announcement of "developer support"
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10"Wow.Apple says the sky is green and the fanatics think that green is a good color for the sky."
I just asked a question, flag. Try not to be such a prick all the time. - Blizaine, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8most of the 3rd party apps I have on my Treo, cause it to run slow and lock up. I guess I do like the fact that I at least have the option to install them, but I can also see why apple would not want that. From the looks of the iPhone "safari-apps" I've seen so far, Apple may have made the right call. Some of those are pretty slick.
- BristolMyLove, on 12/21/2008, -1/+6Lots of Google on the iPhone.
- lgc90, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5My guess would be that the iPhone probably also has a hardware h.264 decoder, making it much easier on its CPU, and thus battery as well.
- the6thReplicant, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I guess that's one more reason *not* to need Flash on the iPhone.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9And you haters will hate it no matter what they come out with. We're even. So shut the hell up.
- zang74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@flag564
And you rag on everything new Apple comes out with, flag. So what's the difference? - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -9/+13No, they aren't shooting themselves in the foot. After all, it never hurt the iPod.
Would it be nice? Maybe, but Apple probably wants to deliver a 100% consistent user experience, and the best way for them to do that is to lock out developers.
If you want a case study in this, look at the Facebook applications... I think maybe like 25% of the Facebook apps I've installed the past few weeks actually work. - AndrewMayne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's got a higher pixel density than most screens that small. That's what makes it "stunning".
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5If you want choices, you can choose to build your own phone I suppose.
- JettaMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The camera should face *the other way* on the iPhone so you can have video calls.
- tadunne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3All haters should shut the frak up! no matter what kind of fanboy they are!
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Flag is nothing but a petty hater. Go get a girlfriend man.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2There are no advantages of 3G over WiFi. 3G also has more latency, and WiFi is faster. Also the way phones work is that they usually don't have a 3G data connection going all the time, they take a second or so to fire it up, so if you use it infrequent the latency feels even worse than it is.
Oh, and 3G devices consume batteries much faster.
And what about that whole "No phones with Qualcom 3G chipsets will be allowed to be imported into the US" story from a few weeks ago? Whatever happened there? - parsap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@kecher
"Am I missing something here? Did you ever write an actual program? Please explain how are you going to write a working SSH client in WebKit? I didn't know that we have the SSH lib available in JavaScript and the ability to open/control TCP sessions at will. Please."
Yes, I am a developer (http://wolfire.com ). I was at WWDC last week. You obviously cannot write a real a ssh client in a web browser, however, my point was that an SSH client is the ideal example of something that could be emulated in webkit. Case in point: AjaxTerm (http://antony.lesuisse.org/qweb/trac/wiki/AjaxTerm) That is Apple's philosophy with the iPhone. Yeah, it doesn't work for things like turning your iPhone into a universal remote, but for something like SSH, it is more than enough.
Don't underestimate webkit. It has full support for SVG, Canvas, and other modern technologies and when you are developing for a single web browser, you can pull out all of the stops. I am currently working on a proof of concept VNC-like iPhone "application" that lets you control your desktop from the phone. Expect to see a ton of similar applications popping up like crazy. The other attendees at WWDC were working on some crazy stuff. - bendedavis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Is there gonna be an update that allows itunes to interface with youtube? it'd be kinda nice being able to easily download videos and put them on your ipod.
- cbabraham, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Now, if only the built in camera could work as a functioning webcam for video uploads to sites such as youtube, stream, and stickam
- diggik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Makes me wonder how many of the control-freak content providers are now wishing they didn't "force" youtube to remove their content.
- rosewoodtemplar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Gee golly wizzbang! Lemme get out my wallet!

"A 600.00 phone with no 3rd party apps is now ok, because Apple said so."
STILL quoting that $600 number, huh? Despite the numerous times that people have set you straight, you keep using that same old (false) talking point. Still trying to claim that number includes contract and taxes, too?
And you're not a troll, how? You certainly aren't being honest, forthright or even bothering to check your facts. All the things you accuse Apple users of doing. - dogearedboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How about updating FrontRow as well! Or are we going to have to wait until October?
- tadunne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is probably a side effect of google buying them. Google video already provided mpeg 4 versions of their content for ipod's. Makes sense really.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4But for day to day use, WiFi is around most people, most of the time. I have it at work and home. Sure it costs money at an airport but at least I have Edge if I am too cheap to pay. And if I travel much, the whole TMobile hotspot plan is actually pretty reasonable and gives you a lot of WiFi access from Starbucks to elsewhere (I signed up for a monthly plan once for a month I knew I'd be travelling an especially heavy amount).
WiFi is great because it's much faster than 3G, much less Edge. Edge is great because it's as widespread as any data network in the US (I managed to get an email out from a campground in Nevada once!). This is just not as limiting as you think it is. - tadunne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does not work on my Nokia :'(
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3superkendall,
You won't be watching YouTube videos on your iPhone at the moments I find myself watching YouTube videos on my totally free LG phone. Which is to say... I almost never use the Wifi at the coffee shops, McDonalds or the Airport. I am usually busy in those places. I watch them when I am, for lack of a better term, stranded somewhere. For example, I was getting my Hybrid Camry serviced the other day, I watched them in the dealership. I was in a walk for life marathon, I watched them when I was sitting around resting. But still... If watching, lets see here... "I Eat Mexicans" is important to you the iPhone is sure to offer the best user experience doing that.
However, I still see the iPhone being incompatible with my super connected IM lifesyle. Last night I was at the all night supermarket, and was taking pictures of products and IM's with my SO. I was walking around the supermarket typing with one hand. On the iPhone I will need two hands to do that. Nevermind the hassle of sending even just 1 mega pixel pictures over that slow edge network.
As a very portable computing device the iPhone is yet to be proven. As a phone for the super connected IM lifestyle it has already failed... - kecher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@parsap

The whole webapp on IPhone story is pretty much lame excuse for not being able to write proper applications for it. Any Symbian / J2ME developer is laughing his ass off on this..
We shouldn't live in denial like a lot of posters here obviously are. We should continue to pressure Apple to release proper SDK for the IPhone so the potential of the device can be fulfilled.
This is still an amazing product, but I want it to be even better, not bury my head in the sand. - diggtomanjeri, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I keep wondering if Apple and Google may be coming out with a competitor to Flash. I understand Flash scripting support would be hard to implement on the iPhone since a lot of scripts require a mouse action and may not conform to the iPhone's small screen, but I still find it odd the most mainstream interactive medium on the Web isn't supported.
- disruptor108, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4All of Youtube isn't going to be encoded in h.264 is it?
