- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Thanks for that typical American response:
"I know they're not good for the environment and people making them in Chinese sweatshops, but I don't care so long as the price remains cheap enough!" - arpie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One point for Dell... if you go through their process of spec'ing a new system, they have an option to Recycle your old computer. Kudos.
- theemptyset, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Two main points:
1) Apple was one of the first computer companies to become compliant with the new standards adopted by the EU this year. The computers shipped by Apple currently meet these new standard for toxic chemicals.
2) I think this is an unfair attack on Apple Computer for the sake of publicity. Apple "is" doing more. I personally am sick of the scare tactics from organizations like Greenpeace.

- ragelink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I'm a mac user.. I do love the idea that Greenpeace is going for a more conscious approach than the regular picketing/protesting/terrorism. I believe that Apple should take on a greener approach to their business model. There has to be ways in which they can make really cool and environmentally safe gear.
Kudos to Greenpeace - ogun7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I disagree. If you are at the top of your industry, you should be held to high standards. Apple touts itself as the most innovative computer company when it comes to design, so they should design our Macs and iPods to be eco-friendly as well. The industrial designers at Apple basically run the company as a tight clique surrounding Steve Jobs and unfortunately this type of attack from Greenpeace starts the debate and forces ecology as a design constraint. If this tactic didn't work we wouldn't even be talking about it..
- flowctrl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How can the truth be unfair? Apple produces e-waste. It doesn't matter what anyone else does. I hope the campaign is successful in convincing Apple to start using non-toxic components in their computers.
- coschrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love Apple and would recommend buying one to most of friends. Though, I gotta admit that I would have always felt easier about, it if there wouldn't have been those issues Greenpeace is just mentioning here!
Also I think the way Greenpeace is doing in it's propaganda in this project is just awesome and totally new. It's humorous in some sense, significant and uses modern ways of spreading the word - using digg etc is cool and good! - Johny900, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as a professional of recycling i can tell you everybody should care enviroment and toxic
waste if you care about the future .this campaign will be very helpful because productors
of ipdods and macbooks care about their reputation (even if they dont care about environment)

http://www.utopiawaste.co.uk/ - onlywils, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yup, because anyone who actually tries to do something good for the environment or slow the bad is a tree-hugging hippie. brilliant thinking. way to justify your lack of willingness to change.
i think this is one of the better, more constructive campaigns greanpeace has waged - they're not slagging apple - in fact they show a fair bit of respect for the products - they're just saying come on, we expect more from you. - zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and tomorrow we watch Greenpeace get sued for copyright infringement. .Mac logo, stock photography pirated off of the apple.com webpage...
The real zinger will be when Apple uses the proceeds from their legal case to further their recycling program. - fstewart6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought my first Apple in 1988 and have bought 8 Macs since then. Apple has done some wonderfully innovative things. I want to see them apply that creativity and innovation to making their products greener.
- UltraPope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am often asked what computer to buy by people who do not know much; I usually tell them to buy a Mac. Well, I did, anyway.
- slashdotdash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The point: Greenpeace has no interest in presenting facts or reality in environmental issues. They spend a lot of money pushing reports that are not only inaccurate, but intentionally misleading.

There's lots of vendors who sell better (non-Apple) batteries. You do need to watch your step though. - eattoenails, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's common knowledge that the 3G iPod battery sucks. Just buy a used 4G.
- geeXP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not gonna happen... Suing Greenpeace for asking them to make more eco-friendly choices will be a very bad PR choice for Apple, especially considering their main demographic. (still we've seen corporations make stupider choices in the past, so you never know...)
- karlskrona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wont buy a new ipod or one of those shiny new mac books before apple goes green... (dammit!)
- cviebrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Tie point for Apple:
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/free_recycling_cover_page_popup.html - bigcheez1250, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats not really a fair point, apple for several years had the slogan "think different", all greenpeace are trying to do is point out that most of the people that use apple computers tend to be "hippies" trying to get away from the evil that is microsoft, admitably other companys might be worse but when you pay considerably more for macs i think we can expect apple to "think defferent" and lead the pack in this.
remember apple doesn't make its stuff them selves, companys like foxcon, asustek, quanta etc make their computers. hp use the same companys and yet they manage to have a sound (and supported) enviromental policy on these chemicals. greenpeace are just trying to encourage apple to do the same as other companies and possibly spend 15 more cents on using good and happy chemicals not bad and unhappy ones :-) - neave, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8I agree. I appreciate what Greenpeace are trying to do here but it comes across as just another gimmick.
- medecau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can't recycle toxic waste:
"If Apple doesn't drop the toxics from its products, it doesn't matter how good a recycling program they have. Because toxics make recycling more hazardous. And eventually, the toxic chemicals will be released. Dropping toxics makes reuse and recycling of products simpler, safer and cheaper." - vonnie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Four words: Parody is fair use.
- BanjoBanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As usual, Greenpeace is chasing the wrong target, but going after the most PR bang for the buck. Apple has had an eco friendly workplace since the late eighties. There products do have a long life span and can be upgraded. I am using a 7 year old PowerBook that does everything I need. I am glad that Greenpeace hung onto the old myth about iPods only lasting the length of the warranty. My 3g is still working fine. The battery last about 5 hours now, but it is three and half years old, and batteries have a finite life. If the folks at Greenpeace truely want to make a difference, they should stick to verifiable facts, avoiding inuendo at all costs. I am afraid that will never happen though, it does not make for good press.
- SunAlex, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0please not Vista. I have problems with many program drivers. So XP is the best.

http://buyphenterminewithoutprescription.net - skol29, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's true Greenpeace will always set higher standards for improving the environmental conditions simply because there's always a better solution. However, they have always used a more subtle methods rather than pin-pointing the cause on these major corporations. Because of Greenpeace and other supporters pushing these standards on companies, we now have the exact same product, if not better, that is more economically viable and poses less threat to the environment. I want to be able to buy a product knowing I'm not harming anything. I'm sure millions of people on a global scale can agree with me on that.

However, they have done the same with other companies as well. It's their job to help them become more environmentally aware of the consequences of their products. It's not a scare tactic. They aren't criticizing Apple, but simply saying they company can do better and that they should for the sake of the environment.
- skol29, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Greenpeace will always set higher standards for improving the environmental conditions. - MrBrightside, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I totally agree with Greenpeace on this one. The Battery in my old 3g ipod is crap. Ive already replaced it twice! - I don't really want to buy a new one, as apart from the battery it still works, and more importantly - it does what i want it to do - play music! - I don't want to watch videos on the tiny screen, or play games in colour - I just want to listen to music, and for more than 4 hours in-between charges!!!!
Sure when my ipod finally gives up, I will buy something new - but I will be looking for a more environmentally friendly option if one is available! - 00Joshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We all have to care about enviroment and toxic waste because it's about our (or our childrens) future. I think this campaign will be much more succesful than blockating the production of iPods and MacBooks.
The comments that other manufactures are worse doesn't take us any further. (Even if you are a mac fan like me) - planbinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think this is very simple. I love computers, and I own quite a few mac's. It was unfortunate to hear that this is happening, but now I know and I am going to do everything I can to persuade apple to become more conscious of their customers from a ecological stand point. This isn't politics, its just common sense.
- vonnie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I am a mac fan but I do support what greenpeace is doing here.
First of all, I don't care if there are "less green manufacturers". I expect better from Apple. I expect a progressive environment-friendly policy from Apple. They shouldn't be content with 'being average'.
Second of all, Greenpeace is obviously targetting Apple because any article concerning Apple is picked up by all sorts of media. Target Apple and you get free publicity. Nobody would care if greenpeace targetted Sandisk. But is using publicity tricks such a bad thing in this case? Greenpeace is fighting a good cause and they should get some publicity.
Besides, we all know that when Apple announces a green environment policy that it will again receive lots of publicity because of this. With a bit of luck, other companies will want to have the same sort of publicity, and implement green policies too. - canuckid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Oh my god, I am fed up with greenpeace. They're a bunch of idiots who don't know how to spend their free time. My advice to greenpeace: Quit with your gay "oh my god they're using *chemicals* in their products!!!11" talk and (KEY POINT), GET A ***** LIFE!
- sabor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm so sick of Greenpeace, PETA, etc. making it all "right" for everyone. All these institutions have their own agenda, and hiding behind a tree hugging hippie costume ain't gonna fool anyone.
- AlBDamned, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8I think Apple need to do more, but this website is stupid and unfair in light of other, less "green" manufacturers.
Thumbs down for Greenpeace on this.
- tuxedup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Even if Apple made all of there products environmentally friendly with no toxic chemicals, greenpeace would still pull them up on something e.g. they do not have solar panels on all of there buildings.
On a different note, don't Acorn make quite environmentally friendly notebooks? And then there is via with there carbon neutral program they are running. - KayIslandDrunk, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I think all companies should be a little more environmentally friendly but in my eyes apple already is. Have any of you seen the new packaging on the new nano? There is hardly any waste there. I think this campaign is decent and all but seeing as macs are already a pretty penny I would not want them to do anything to cost me more money. The kids in Asia are being exposed to toxic chemicals? I have two responses to that: Don't play in toxic chemicals. And what do I care, I don't live in Asia.
