I can show you a $80 cell phone that can make calls, plays music, sends text messages, and wont suffer from a kernal panic. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38Congrats on predicting the bleedin' obvious.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36The price point ... Woz said, was "extremely low."
Yeah, every billionaire is going to buy one. - Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Welcome to the PDA phone market. Any Decent PDA/Phone is is the same price range.
- Fitzhume, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28It's pretty silly that you say that. This isn't some little subsidized flavor of the month cellphone for $99, and it's not trying to be.
Right now I have a 6700 from Verizon. It's a smart phone, runs around $499 with a 1 year contract, and doesn't have nearly the features that the iPhone has. Terrible battery life, thicker, stylus, makes calls when I don't want it to... worst of all, it crashes when I answer calls sometimes. Yes, I have to reboot after it freezes the phone while I try and answer it. It has 128MB built-in, 64 megs RAM, compared to Apple's 4 gig model. 1.3 megapixel camera versus the 2.0 megapixel camera of the Apple phone. I think you see what I'm getting at.
For a PDA/Cellphone/Do everything device, it's far from overpriced.
Thank goodness Apple came along and kicked the stale cellphone/PDA market in the balls. It can only get better from here. - krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -11/+35well that makes one of you. Smartphones are expensive. And this is way beyond a smartphone. $499 isn't that much to ask.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23...says the guy with three segways in the trunk of his prius.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26I was at MacWorld today. I go every year. Usually I'm psyched to be there. Today was just strange, IMO. Apple introduced no real computer hardware or software today. At their annual trade show they decided not to introduce any computer hardware or software. That's amazing to me. Now, I understand the premise. They're not 'Apple Computer' anymore...they're just 'Apple'...yeah, right. Sure. Whatever. But the iPhone doesn't exist yet. Look at this:

That's a room full of losers sitting through a lengthy presentation about a chunk of vaporware that isn't even scheduled to be released until next summer. Not only that, but it's just a cell phone. They're sitting through a lecture about a $600 cell phone. And their stock jumped 6 points because of today's keynote? WTF?
No iLife '07. No word about Leopard. No quad-core Mac Pros. No new displays. No pro application updates. No nothing. A new Airport, a cheesy Tivo-wannabe with a lil' bitty 40 gig drive (all it needs with the new Airport!) and a nonexistent $600 cell phone.
Look, I own Mac products. I'm typing this on a quad-3 GHz Mac Pro with a 30" display. I like Apple's products. But this was retarded. - coolian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Are you f'ing kidding me?? ArsTechica is down because of Digg.
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15He claims that he carries 20 grand on him at all times, so yeah...to him it's extremely low. That is pocket change to him. Unfortunately he isn't in synch with what the vast majority of Americans and others can afford.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Pathetic in a way that he has a life that he enjoys, and helps educate children? Yeah I guess that is not cool no more. He did not get shot by his rap buddies, he just survived a plane crash. Pathetic you say? Oh but the segway... you might have a point.
- tkambler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I love Woz, but I don't care who you are... If you are riding a Segway, you look like a complete jackass. Woz included.
- Mountaineer1024, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Nothing in this that has never been in a phone before?
I am not an apple fan in any way, but THIS product has my interest.
And why?
Apple has a big reputation for extremely easy to use interfaces, unlike my current smart phone (i-mate pocket pc) which runs Windows Mobile, arguably one of the worst interfaces I have seen, it's designed like they expect you to use a mouse ffs.
Then you add in the fact that the operating system itself is inherently unstable (I've been rebooting this thing at least once a week since new) and SLOW (any app, including the phone controller, can take several seconds to appear or even just hang).
I'm expecting big things, and I'll certainly be one of the first in AU to own one of these if it lives up to the hype.
I want a smart phone that WORKS damnit! - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Considering Woz's one of the board members of Danger/Sidekick, I think he has some idea what he's talking about.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9wow, i never knew that digg could take own ars.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm sorry, but DO NOT compare the iPhone with a laptop running OS X. Can you run photoshop on it and render hi res images? Maybe its powerful enough, but who wants to use advanced computer programs like that on a touchscreen? Rendering video? Please, even my computer takes a while to do that.
Sure, its OS X. But you're still very limited to what you can feasibly run and utilize on it. Now if you can't run advanced computer programs, or you don't want to run those kidns of programs on it... why should one invest the amount of money that arguably could buy a pretty powerful mac or pc? Its portable? Well its actually kinda big for a 'phone'. Yeah, sure its got widescreen video playing, but only an 8GB flash drive for that 599 dollar pricepoint?
Yes, for people who already have or are planning on buying a smart phone, its a great choice. But most of us just don't need this.
What I'm saying really is that right now, the Iphone doesn't seem really too appealing. But i'm SURE apple will improve it in the next generations of the iphone and once they get support with other cell phone providers, I'll probably end up picking one up. But don't jump on the hype train just yet. - gordonp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12After reading the title, I thought Woz was actually talking on the iPhone.
- darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7For those of us that don't allow our browser to pass referers you do indeed need the entire link and not just dugmirror.com
- malliemcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't understand the complaints over price. If you convert the price from USD to AUD, you get around the $800AUD mark, add $200AUD due to apple's magical mark up for their goods that hit Australia and its still cheaper than say a HP hw6965, and I would argue the iPhone is a hell of a lot nicer to use and for my needs better feature set than the iPaq, oh and $150 cheaper than my magical guess at Aussie pricing.
M - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not GOB Bluth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Holy hell that segway and helmet makes woz look like a some sort of biomechanical geek monster. What is the deal woz?
Give those things a rest. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6he should definitely get off the segway and, y'know, walk some.
- tkambler, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Compared to other "Smart" phones, the price is wonderful.
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He's a geek, get over it.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Fitzhume
The 6700 is $299 direct from Verizon currently with a two year contract, to be fair. A 4GB SD card would add about $45 to the price, which makes the iPhone almost 50% more expensive.
It's true that WM5 can still be a bit flaky, but there are no guarantees of stability on the untested iPhone either. Apple's quality testing is pretty good, but I'll be shocked if there aren't at least a few fairly serious problems. I just don't see them getting everything right their first go round.
There's also no high speed wireless, integrated keyboard, Exchange integration, application support, Skype, included productivity apps, memory card expansion, streaming media support, or voice control. In particular the lack of a keyboard/keypad is troublesome. Reports from owners of other touchscreen only devices have been generally poor.
It should also be pointed out that this phone will not be released for another six months, and a whole new generation of smartphones is due out. The iPhone will likely be the best media centric phone ever (not saying much), whether it can compete with smartphones on other features remains to be seen. - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@Kirk
Helps if you include the protocol!

Edit: Damn, it didn't catch the pictures. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do it. I'd like to read your top 10 reasons the iPhone will fail. Tell ya what. While you're thinking real hard to come up with all those reasons, I'll go back and do a search of Slashdot to find the thread from the day the iPod was released, and you can see how many people were predicting the iPod's inevitable demise. That might give you some ideas for your list.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15"He told the quickly-growing crowd that there was "no choice but to switch" to the iPhone from whatever other totally inferior service that he, or you, or anybody already has."
Woz, I respect you a great deal, but that is just a totally stupid comment coming from you.
What happened to the straight talking Woz? - fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4does anybody know if a dead battery can be swapped out?
I'm not trolling, I really want to know. - erictheninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I didn't realize Woz was such a big guy. Perhaps he's one of the many reasons people shouldn't use Segways.
Dig me down if you'd like. - HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You're delusional.
- WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's funny that Woz talks so much about smartphones, yet owns a RAZR.
- oneiroi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10It is expensive, but really priced accurately. First what is it? It's a nano + pda + phone...
Nanos run what...$200 for a 4gb? And if you get the newest treo through cingular with a plan (through amazon) that runs $380.
So..let me do the math here....
$200 + $380 = $580
Then you add the thinness/design, the capabilities, the touch screen....
It may not be cheap, but it's worth what you pay for it. - KooLLaiD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anyone saying this is just another PDA/Smartphone is full of ***** and delusional. I for one want to know where the first born child for an iPhone line starts :o
- deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the ultimate killer app for the iPhone would be Skype integration. What if, when you were within a wifi hotspot, iPhone automatically used Skype instead of your cell minutes? I'd definitely spring for this if that were included.
- lunchb0xen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't have an issue over price. My issue is that it is Cingular only. I live in an area where we don't get Cingular. boo!
- darkspire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That would be nice, but I seriously doubt Cingular or any of the other providers would have liked that. I wouldn't be surprised if someone could figure out how to add it after the fact though. Since apple has tied the phone to cingular we are pretty much stuck with whatever they are willing to do. Which is also the only reason I won't get one.
- adroit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I got some pics of Him at the same time. check it

You must not have seen the 2006 Special Event. This is Apple's strategy: to move beyond the computer to become a digital media company. Trust me, you will hear more about the Mac and its updates throughout the year. The purpose of this keynote was to lay out Apple's strategy *as a company* for the following year. And with all the speculation, if Apple had *not* announced the iPhone, its stock price would have gone down. - finkployd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's why one should read the article before deciding to digg it or not.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No.
- SoundScape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I totally agree. Everyone's complaining but there's nothing that can match the iPhone feature-for-feature at the same price or cheaper.
And the mark-up here in Australia does totally suck for consumer electronics in general and not just Apple products. I'm still waiting for our movie and TV store in iTunes. How has the Apple TV reached us before those? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having the Apple TV? - Fitzhume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The phone runs OS X. Skype runs on OS X. I can only hope that it's that simple.
- dilbertmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So tell me... How many negative diggs warrant a prompting of you to write your article? I eagerly await.
- SoundScape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd digg you down if I didn't agree so completely.
- adroit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here are pics of Woz outside Moscone
http://flickr.com/photos/tylerhowarth/sets/72157594470434447/ - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The phone doesnt run OSX. It just runs the same kernel as OSX, but aqua and hte rest of it arent there. Its like saying a pocketpc runs windows vista."
I think everything except for Aqua is in the iPhone. During the keynote Cocoa, Quartz, OpenGL were all mentioned on the side as being part of this OS X derivative. However, without Aqua, current OS X apps aren't gonna run. -
